Overview

John Medeski and Billy Martin started their historic musical partnership over fifteen years ago when Martin invited Medeski to come to his Brooklyn loft studio and play duets. This session resulted in the formation of Medeski Martin and Wood in 1991. But, the two never forgot that initial two-hour jam session, and discussed making a duet record in the future. This is their first duet album together, and Medeski uses the Hammond B3 foot pedals as bass accompaniment to their unique, soulful groove inventions. The album contains several hooky funk tracks and a few intense exploratory improvisations that will blow anyone’s socks off.

Press Quotes “John Medeski [is an] organist extraordinaire.” — NPR “With a steady base as one-third of the renowned experimental jazz trio Medeski, Martin and Wood, drummer Billy Martin has become one of the most forward-thinking, innovative, and influential percussionists in the music world.” — All Music Guide “Call us crazy, but MMW may be one of the great untapped resources in hip-hop. They develop ideas coolly and carefully, have an incredible sense of space, and when they improvise—with Medeski’s keys skipping and dancing flirtatiously through Martin’s drums and Wood’s elastic low-end—they do so together, pushing and teasing each other’s solos rather than merely framing them.” — Associated Press “Medeski, Martin and Wood presents the possibilities of jazz to a generation familiar with the iPod, text messaging, and dubs. While traditionalists minimalize their musical merit, it remains difficult to ignore the trio’s profound connection with contemporary culture.” — All About Jazz “MMW choose their ingredients carefully, having honed their search-and-deconstruct techniques to razor sharpness. The resultant … flavors—complicated, spicy, sweet, and sour—offer much to savor.” — Rolling Stone

Selling Points • The first funky-free duets CD from these famed champions of the organ and drums. • A Medeski Martin & Wood fan’s cream dream! • John Medeski and Billy Martin will tour as a duet in support of this album. • Hysterical fans will wander the streets wondering, “Is this the end of MMW?!?” As press picks up the story, hype will build. • Radio interviews and in-store/in-studio performances. • Possible Bonnaroo Festival appearance in June 2007.

Overview

David S. Ware: tenor saxophone Matthew Shipp: piano William Parker: bass Guillermo E. Brown: drums

Recorded live at Vision Festival 2006, Renunciation was the last US performance by David S. Ware’s revered quartet. Featuring three brand-new compositions—the beauty ballad “Ganesh Sound,” the epic title suite centerpiece, and the condensed encore—this concert, and exquisite recording thereof, offers the quartet at the very height of its powers as the members collectively say goodbye.

Press Quotes “Let’s be bold: the David S. Ware Quartet is the best small band in jazz today. I realize that I will almost certainly hear another quartet, or trio or quintet or octet, this week or next, that will make me want to backpedal. But every time I see Ware’s group or return to the records, it flushes the competition from memory.” — Gary Giddins, Village Voice “This record is the deepest, most coherent, and most accessible DSWQ disc I’ve heard, and the best record of the year by far. Consider that a recommendation.” — All About Jazz Publisher’s Pick “Another absolutely killer and essential release for your pathetic and puny music collection from this seemingly possessed avant-jazz giant of the sax. He’s taken the torch of Coltrane and not just carried it, but he threw the damn thing into an active volcano.” — Alternative Press “Visceral, relentless, cathartic, squalling—many of the words that have long been associated with saxophonist David S. Ware’s recordings and performances apply as well to his new album. The sheer force of his tone—and his seemingly superhuman ability to sustain and manipulate its raw emotional power—are a marvel to behold, perhaps more so now than ever.” — Washington Post

Selling Points • The last US performance by the mighty David S. Ware Quartet. • Exquisitely recorded and mixed, featuring three profound new compositions. • Beautiful digipak packaging. • Full service/promotion to national press and e-media by AUM Fidelity. • Full service/promotion to college, non-commercial, and NPR radio by AUM Fidelity. • Ads in Signal to Noise, Stop Smiling, Arthur, Point of Departure, and more.

Featured Artists William Parker: doson’ngoni, shakuhachi, dumbek, talking drum, water bowls, bass Hamid Drake: tabla, frame drum, gongs, drums

Overview

Volume 2: Summer Snow represents the second immaculate studio session of two of the greatest musical beings America has to offer the world. The recent expanded issue of their first duo meeting—First Communion + Piercing The Veil: Volume 1 Complete—displayed their eternal prowess via intensity in full, redefining drum & bass in any music. Summer Snow reveals Parker and Drake in a more meditative state, with Parker focusing on the doson’ngoni (Mali hunter’s guitar) and shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute). Five years have passed since their first meeting, and a whole lot has changed, so catch up!

Press Quotes “Parker and Drake visit under-explored territory here—the junction between the deepest riches of jazz and the many improvisatory traditions around the world that came before it.” — NPR “These two high priests of free improvisation can rock ‘n’ roll with the best of ‘em. They come together to create sounds, images, and ideas that transcend time and place.” — All About Jazz “Displaying a full spectrum of sound, Piercing the Veil is a magical recording of two of the most soulful and spiritual voices in avant-garde jazz. This album is nothing short of essential.” — Other Music “With any luck, Piercing the Veil isn’t just a [one-off] day trip for these guys, because this is a crucial free-jazz advance.” — Washington City Paper “Not since Don Cherry and Ed Blackwell joined forces have two musicians so organically wedded world music influences with free jazz. The resultant music is connected to history and culture yet true to its contemporary American roots. And the rhythms groove so deeply that if dance-club DJs got hold of this CD, all America would be moving to it.” — Jazziz

Overview

The Spiritualaires of Hurtsboro, Alabama are one of the last still-active gospel quartets, with origins in gospel’s Golden Age of the 1950s. Weaving together influences from blues and country & western, the Spiritualaires have nevertheless remained faithful to their ever-distinct yet traditional sound. Drawn from recent studio recordings and live radio broadcasts, Singing Songs of Praise reveals the Spiritualaires as both a supa-fine harmony quartet and a unique guitar-driven ensemble. What a treat it is to have—after almost six decades together—the group’s debut recording!

Press Quotes “A force to be reckoned with … inventive, raw, and potent.” — Time Out New York “Gospel meets blues at the level of raw passion.” — New York Times “It’s rough, brutal, and sweet at the same time. This is sanctified gospel, untamed, untainted, and beyond the pale.” — All Music Guide “A mainline to the Truth.” — The Wire “Hmm. If CaseQuarter digs up some more gospel music like this, I might have to consider actually going to church some Sunday … Godlovin’ fervor that can’t be faked. You’ll feel it. Quite recommended!” — Aquarius Records “Fire-breathing proof that the distance between blues and gospel is less than a razor’s edge.” — Boston Phoenix [HHHH]

LP: ALI 69 Price Code: M NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA

Featured Artists Bernie Bankrupt: electronics, keyboards, samplers Fruity Franky: vocals Véronique Mystique: bass, guitar Jackie the Jack Hammer: drums, percussion

Overview

Following two years of touring and general party-starting, Lesbians on Ecstasy’s much-anticipated sophomore release is set to drop in early spring 2007. They’re back and surfing the giant third wave of wimmin’s lib, but amongst the optimistic slogans and hopes for a liberated future, corporate interests and inequality reign, turning feminist dreams to stone and casting dark clouds over the land. L.OE. has retaliated with a collection of songs that hearken back to activist hope—seems like wishful thinking in this day and age. We Know You Know touches on similar themes as the band’s debut, but delves deeper into some of the clichés and tropes of iconic lesbian music. This time around, the band blends more melodic elements with hooks that might remind the listener of campfire sing-a-longs at some mythical womyn’s event in the ‘70s—several tracks even feature a chorus. However, the group has managed to maintain the heavy beat aspect of its debut. The result is a danceable album that is both uplifting and very dark, but with the sense of humor and fun that make Lesbians On Ecstasy unique. For this upcoming year, the Lezzies plan to keep the love going. The group will perform a rock opera at Montreal’s International Contemporary Art Biennale in May in addition to appearances at SXSW and the WMC in Miami.

Press Quotes “An impressive maelstrom of dark distorted techno, glitchy pop, and electropunk that subverts and perverts a slew of dyke classics.” — San Francisco Bay Guardian

Selling Points • Follow-up to their debut, named Album of the Year (2004) by The Advocate. • L.O.E. have a die-hard following throughout the US due to multiple successful tours (including one in support of Le Tigre). • US tour dates throughout Spring and Autumn 2007. • College radio mailing; publicist hired for traditional music media. • Web publicist will focus on blogs and MySpace promotion. • Additional publicist will focus on gay print and web media. • Ads in music and gay media outlets.

Overview

Nick Delffs: vocals, guitar Colin Anderson: drums Mayhaw Hoons: bass Jeff Lehman: bass

Holocene Music is beyond stoked to present the debut full-length from Portland jangly-pop wunderkinds the Shaky Hands. Sliding bouncy go-go beats under shambling guitars and reedy, swooning vocals, Shaky Hands make the kind of catchy, soulful indie rock tailormade for brokedown car stereos and river-rat boomboxes. This debut album’s thirteen tracks glow with a sloppily romantic warmth that’s equal parts summer sunshine and candlelit mellow, pre-party buzz and scruffy day-after fuzziness. The result is a fully formed and confident debut; a big-hearted, starry-eyed bear hug of a record full of youthful energy and tumbling vigor. Shaky Hands formed in Portland in Fall 2003. The group began as a three-piece, with Nick Delffs (Castanets) playing guitar and singing, Colin Anderson playing drums, and Paul Culp on bass. Following Culp’s departure in 2004, Mayhaw Hoons and his hair joined the band, soon followed by second guitarist Jeff Lehman. In 2006 the band recorded this debut at Portland’s Sidecar Studios before bringing on Nathan Delffs as an official member that spring. Now five strong, Shaky Hands is a visceral, life-affirming live experience that will totally make you hug the person standing next to you.

Press Quotes “Fans of The Walkmen and Broken Social Scene will love this band, which employs some of the same held-note meditations on melody and harmony … Shaky Hands is the best rock band in Portland.” — Willamette Week “There’s this band called Shaky Hands … I still haven’t met those guys, so we have no affiliation, but I hope we will be affiliated soon, in the future. I think eventually we’ll probably have to play a show together. They played a house show a couple months ago, and it was fucking awesome.” — Hutch Harris, The Thermals, Pitchfork

Selling Points • National tour dates in May/June 2007. • Named Best New Band in The Thermals’ recent guest list on Pitchfork. • Called Portland’s Best New Band by local alt-weekly Willamette Week. • Forthcoming video for “Why & How Come” directed by Whitey (Band of Horses, The Thermals, The Shins, Mudhoney, Panther). • Full national/tour press campaign by Matt Wright PR (Gang of Four, Acid Mothers Temple, Cex, Talkdemonic, Horse Feathers, Alela Diane). • Full college radio campaign by SPECTRE (Built To Spill, Ladytron, Psapp). • Ads in Pitchfork.

Overview

Skin Graft Records proudly presents a fully re-mastered, extended edition of The Flying Luttenbachers’ landmark 1995 album Destroy All Music. This special edition, which features notorious drummer/multi-instrumentalist Weasel Walter and renowned jazz saxophonist Ken Vandermark, captures the band at the height of the internal struggles that would soon dissolve the quintet line-up. In addition to the ten tracks featured on the original release, this comprehensive edition includes seven never-before-heard vintage recordings, all painstakingly re-mastered by bandleader Weasel Walter. Destroy All Music Revisited contains eighty minutes of wild, unhinged cacophony, fusing fiery free jazz improvisation with modern post-punk and noise-rock structures. This is an integral part of Chicago’s underground musical heritage, a milestone in adventurous jazz, and a key component of the neo-no wave movement.

Press Quotes “Destroy All Music lets you continue to follow this incredible band’s evolution from a freak-out jazz/spaz group to the conceptual beast of musical destruction that they are today … Here, as always, the Luttenbachers are pushing limits.” — Pillowfight “Recorded when some fellas from the Vandermark Five were in the lineup, records like this are the new classics of adventurous jazz. No gimmicks, just intense exploration.” — Popwatch

Selling Points • This definitive version massively improves upon all previous issues. In addition to being extensively re-mastered, the album includes seven additional tracks and comes complete with a retrospective booklet. • The Flying Luttenbachers’ Skin Graft debut Revenge was named one of the 25 Essential Local Albums by the Illinois Entertainer and pegged as one of the Ten Best Metal Albums of the ’90s by Alternative Press. With no signs of letting up, the band continues to gather steam in the underground music scene, frequently touring major European and US markets. • In 1998 Ken Vandermark won the Cadence poll for Best Artist and Best Recording, and shortly thereafter received the MacArthur “Genius” Grant. Previous recipients include Cecil Taylor and Anthony Braxton. • Bandleader Weasel Walter is eternally active, from free jazz projects with Henry Kaiser and William Winant to post-hardcore band XBXRX and heavy metal act Lair of the Minotaur. • Ads in Skyscraper, Signal to Noise, Punk Planet, and The Wire.

With Listen to Your Left Brain, the Chinese Stars declare a new cold war. Formed in 2003, the band’s pedigree reaches back to legendary acts Arab On Radar and Six Finger Satellite—seeds that inform this new efflorescence—but now the group has filled out in all the right places, having honed their chaotic four-on-the-floor post-punk dance style into an unequivocal signature. Here, the Chinese Stars set in motion a tsunami of new waves, crafting an atmosphere of propulsive sonic escapism fueled by noodlestringed guitar riffs, seat-of-your-pants lyrics, and hallucinatory synths. This is a fast-forward audio movement, taking music back to the base pleasures. Razor-sharp, aural pop art: the overblown are busted.

Press Quotes “Out-punking Radio 4, out-funking !!!, and out-rapturing The Rapture, the Chinese Stars’ brazen four-on-the-floor propulsiveness flexibly blends elastic guitars over stabby snares and jived-up bass … while former AOR singer Eric Paul peppers songs with salacious commentary, exuding depraved, lascivious lyrics.” — CMJ “The music on their Skin Graft debut, Turbo Mattress, keeps the beats as jerky as a racecar driver with the e-brake on, with guitar noise as jumper cables and Eric Paul’s surreal lyrics as a hallucinogen—fans of a more fucked Ex Models aesthetic, take note.” — The Stranger

Selling Points • Features members of Arab On Radar and Six Finger Satellite. • Limited edition vinyl LP designed by Fort Thunder artist Matt Brinkman. • The Chinese Stars’ debut CD Turbo Mattress sold out immediately upon release and will be back in a stunning new edition from Skin Graft Records this summer. • Extensive press and radio mailing courtesy of Three One G and Blueghost Publicity. • Ads in Skyscraper, Signal to Noise, Punk Planet, and The Wire.

Sold for Tomorrow is the debut release by Budapest-based alternative rock band The Moog, Hungary’s hottest new export (musical or otherwise). The album, mixed by Nirvana and Hot Hot Heat producer Jack Endino, will undoubtedly get the attention of press, radio, and indie rock fans alike—not only because of the band’s unique Eastern European roots (the press calls them the Hungarian Strokes), but simply because Sold for Tomorrow is an amazing album full of immediately catchy pop songs. The Moog takes their inspiration from sixties rock ‘n’ roll bands (The Beatles, Beach Boys, Kinks, Sonics) and late seventies punk (Ramones, Blondie), as well as an assorted variety of rock groups (Nirvana, Muse, Blur, Libertines). “I Like You”—the album’s first single—recalls the classic pop feel of early Lennon-McCartney songwriting with an innocent-yet-direct pop style, while “Survive” brings to mind The Passenger-era Iggy Pop with its hypnotic melodies and clipped guitar chords. The Moog is causing big waves on MySpace, where the band enjoys much adulation from their ever-growing number of fans in both Europe and the US. Sold for Tomorrow is the first musical statement from this young Hungarian rock band, and its music promises it won’t be their last.

Press Quotes “Sure, they share their name with a synthesizer, but The Moog are making sonic waves in their own right. The Budapest quintet is the first Hungarian rock band to land on an American label, and MuSick Recordings will begin selling their upcoming debut, Sold for Tomorrow, April 10. The album boasts rough-around-the-edges garage pop tunes, and that album’s ‘Everybody Wants’ is a particularly catchy three-chord gem.” — SPIN.com “Another band taking an audible cue from the early ’60s is Hungarian dance rockers The Moog. The Budapest quintet, which makes its American debut at South by Southwest in March, finds the tuneful common ground among the Beach Boys, Blondie, and Brit pop bands of late.” — SF Gate.com “The Moog, the latest hot indie-rock act to surface in Budapest, has announced details surrounding the release of their debut album, Sold for Tomorrow, which is set to appear April 10 on MuSick. That will provide them with the curious distinction of being the first Hungarian band to ever sign to a US-based label. And we think we can safely say it’s about damn time … Will Budapest become the next Montreal? Only time will tell.” — CMJ

Selling Points • Mixed by Jack Endino (Nirvana, Hot Hot Heat, Zeke, Soundgarden). • First Hungarian rock band to sign to an American label. • Top MySpace band. • Extensive US and Canadian touring planned for 2007. • Ads in AP, Magnet, Big Takeover, Amplifier, Under the Radar, and more.

In 2000, three guys from Massachusetts formed an aggressive punk band called No Trigger. The team quickly put together enough songs to play a full live set, took their first tour from Boston to Chicago, and recorded their first demo CD. Since then, No Trigger has put out two independent releases, gone on multiple tours, and amassed a great deal of experience. The band signed a deal with Nitro Records and released their debut full-length in March 2006. Nowadays, No Trigger continues to aggressively push on and has absolutely no plans to stop doing what they love. Extinction in Stereo is a combination of the two demos No Trigger independently released before they signed with Nitro Records in late 2005. In late 2004, the admired Japanese punk label BigMouth JPN initially released the EP exclusively in Japan after having the songs digitally re-mastered. With the success of the EP in Japan and the band’s swiftly growing national fan base, a growing demand for this EP has sprouted in the US. Because of this, No Trigger has teamed up with New School Records to bring it to the US, repackaged and ready for retail. The seven songs found on Extinction in Stereo are a mix of aggressive yet melodic punk highlighted by socially relevant lyrics. This is a definite must for any current fan of the band, or for fans of aggressive punk in the vein of Rise Against, Good Riddance, or Strike Anywhere.

Press Quotes “No Trigger is one of the bands to watch out for in 2006.” — Alternative Press “No Trigger is a balls-to-the-wall fusion of punk, melody, and hardcore. No Trigger possesses the unique gift of creating instantly memorable songs without sacrificing a bit of artistic integrity, energy, or uniqueness.” — AbsolutePunk.net

Overview

Flesh and Spirits is The Gena Rowlands Band’s third full-length recording for Lujo Records. It follows The Nitrate Hymnal, the 2006 collaboration with Anti-Social Music, and the band’s 2005 debut La Merde et Les Etoiles. Flesh and Spirits is the band’s most focused, cohesive, and catchy work yet. To create the best album of his career, GRB mastermind Bob Massey assembled a virtuosic band of Washington DC’s most acclaimed musicians. GRB regulars Jean Cook and David Durst were joined by Vin Novara (formerly of CrownHateRuin, Oswego, and Canyon) as well as Jason Caddell and Eric Axelson (formerly of The Dismemberment Plan). The result features eleven instantly memorable songs built on Massey’s trademark lyrical formula that combines dry wit, a grappling with darkness, and glimmers of love and light. If La Merde was the soundtrack for a night of heartache and The Nitrate Hymnal was its fever dream, Flesh and Spirits is the jolt of energy to get you out of bed the next morning.

Press Quotes “Tragic, hilarious, brilliant writing.” — Pittsburgh Post-Gazette “The music could qualify as chamber pop if it had any pretense of wanting to be pop—instead the violas, vibes, clarinets, and cellos drift along behind Massey’s wine-stained baritone, forming a sort of stream-of-consciousness backdrop that drifts in and out of dissonance, occasionally dissolving to a minimalist wisp.” — Pitchfork [7.1] “Musically kaleidoscopic, simultaneously lush and choppy, this ambitious experiment succeeds on pretty much every level.” — Splendid

Overview Sur la mer is the brainchild of Atsu Nagayama (The Boredoms, The Prescriptions), who wrote and arranged all of the material for this debut EP. Nagayama enlisted the help of friends Dino, Julie Liu (Rex, Tortoise), Jason McDermott, Kim Ambriz (Rabbit Rabbit), and Fred Erskine (June of ‘44, Hoover) when it came time to record. The results speak for themselves—provocative, captivating, and ambient instrumental bliss. Prelude to the Sea was recorded in Chicago in 2002 at Doug Sharin’s studio and Nagayama’s basement. The wheels are in motion to release another eight songs previously recorded by this wonderful bunch in the near future.

Overview “The melding of bombast and beauty, this is what Caspian does best. On their first release You Are the Conductor, perhaps the best instrumental EP of 2005, Caspian maintains a firm melodic foundation while not forgetting to bring the rock. This record displays maturity well beyond the band’s years. The songwriting, cohesiveness, and grandiose sound all point to a promising future. If Caspian progress from the admirable debut of You Are the Conductor they could easily become a powerhouse in the postrock scene.” — Delusions of Adequacy

Overview “Recorded live in 2004 and mastered by James Plotkin (Khanate, Phantomsmasher), this live disc is almost eighty minutes of alternating drift and pummel, sludgy slow motion dirges that crystallize into sparkling sonic fields of glisten and glimmer. Even when they’re heavy, Growing manage to be delicate and ethereal … While Growing continually return to that near-ambient tranquility, the record is a series of meandering excursions into massive slow motion, melted-riff soundscapes, notes and chords unfurl impossibly slowly, as if someone had doubled the gravity and the sound waves were actually visible, drizzling lazily to the floor like molasses or honey, rich golden globs of thick distorted throb.” — Aquarius Records

Overview “A band but not a band. There is the crux: Attack Formation is everywhere and nowhere, rocking your face off while subliminally giving your mind a colonic.” — Austin Chronicle Attack Formation consists of an ever-changing group of contributors and participants built around the core members. We Are Alive in Tune continues the band’s legacy of breaking boundaries and redefining itself aesthetically. With songs that range from electronic breakbeat blasts to lovelorn acoustic songs and high-energy tension storms, Attack Formation is still able to infuse each tune with an unforgettable hook or an infectious melody. Overview “For each lightning bolt, there are moments of incalculable serenity and reflection where the storm is nowhere in sight … a continuously satisfying listening experience from start to finish.” — One Final Note Cold Bleak Heat is the dream-team East Coast avant jazz line-up of alto/tenor saxophonist Paul Flaherty (Dream/Aktion Unit), drummer Chris Corsano (Sunburned Hand of the Man, Vampire Belt), trumpeter Greg Kelley (nmperign, Heathen Shame), and acoustic bassist Matt Heyner (No Neck Blues Band, Test). While as explosive as their 2005 debut, Simitu brings a melancholic, sensitive feel to these improvisations. CBH wages between the melodic centers/ghostly solos of Flaherty/Kelley and the loose, free blowouts you’d expect, all while maintaining the grand swell of a hardcore jazz symphony. The town of Coarsegold is the geographic center of California, and it is appropriate that The Dying Californian chose to name their third release after it since Nathan Dalton was in Coarsegold when he began writing the album. The members of The Dying Californian have been playing together for well over ten years, and yet they continue to refine their sound: part indie rock, part folk, part country, but with a distinct melody all its own. Sure, the band’s influences can be detected in early R.E.M., CCR, The Band, and Neil Young, but The Dying Californian’s sound, lead by the charismatic voice of Nathan Dalton, is blazing its own West Coast trail. The band has shared the stage with American Music Club, Ladyhawk, Love as Laughter, Magnolia Electric Co., Mystic Chords of Memory, Sufjan Stevens, and countless others.

Overview “Tight and fast, melodic, and filled with whoa-whoa harmonies. From Sweden, where they know their shit.” — Lollipop Venerea started out as Venereal Disease in Falkenberg, Sweden back in 1991, covering classic eighties punkers such as the Hard-Ons, Gang Green, Bad Religion, and The Ramones. The first thirty or so self-penned numbers were cut for two legendary demos: From Beer to Eternity (1992) and The Second Cuming of Venereal Disease (1993), which attracted enough attention to get the band its first record deal with now-defunct Swedish label Brööl. After shortening their moniker to Venerea, the group went on to record for German label Gift of Life as well as tour with Ten Foot Pole and the Vans Off the Wall tour with Ignite, SNFU, Deviates, and Powerhouse. According to popular website PastePunk.com, “One Louder is a throwback to the days when Ten Foot Pole, Pulley, Pennywise, Propagandhi, Strung Out, Lagwagon, and NOFX ruled the scene, and everyone was Venerea One Louder sporting board shorts and tees with the Fat Wreck Chords logo on the back … fourteen songs of masterfully crafted, speedy, forbidden-beat punk fucking rock, and every morsel of it hits with the fury Genre: Punk Label: Bad Taste Records of a band playing their instruments until they’ve reduced them to piles of ash.” CD: BTR 89 Price Code: M Selling Points • The Bad Taste debut from one of Europe’s best melodic punk bands! • Full press and radio mailing. Overview “They’re Akron/Family with different screws loose and altered mores in the foreground: like Crosby, Suzuki, Rollins & Young in halves, they roar in confrontational salvos before drifting into pastoral hums, those bents occasionally merging in the form of technical but jarring prog-and-psyche excursions.” — Pitchfork Brooklyn duo The USA is a Monster takes a break from its prolific, terrifically noisy Load Records catalogue to release two acoustic songs with Lovepump United. This surprisingly “quiet” release from the normally skronktastic band is a lush, psychedelic exploration recorded with a seven-piece ensemble at The Werehouse in Winston-Salem, NC. Overview “AWOL One has one of rap’s most original voices.” — Spin Some have called AWOL One “the Tom Waits of hip-hop.” Some have called Factor “the John Peel of underground hip-hop.” AWOL One and Factor certainly make no legitimate attempts to fit into such gigantic and legendary shoes, but their kicks are lookin’ pretty smooth on their latest collab, Only Death Can Kill You. AWOL One (a.k.a Tony Martin) explains, “This album is all about life cycles (life-death-day-night-alpha-omega), opposites, and confessions. I love this project because it is a consistent vibe and sound. It’s like waking up early hung over, having a revelation, and recording it.” A natural eclectic in life and music, AWOL One tends to deliver consistently creative projects that take twists and turns throughout. Along with being an accomplished emcee, he is a producer, video director, fledgling label owner, painter, graffiti writer, graphic artist, DJ, and proud father. Ska is definitely back and there is no better proponent than icons of the scene The Toasters! The band has carved out its own niche in history, amassing a humongous catalog of music including fifteen albums and DVDs; countless videos, singles, and EPs; and innumerable compilation appearances. Consummate outsiders, the group has turned down major record deals from the likes of Danny Goldberg and Polygram, instead opting to run down their own indie track. The band has logged a staggering 4,000 concert appearances on stages around the world. In 1997, Billboard’s lead article dubbed them “New York’s Ska Pioneers.” With their eclectic, instantly recognizable and idiosyncratic sound, the group has also been branded the “Miles Davis of Ska” and the “Ramones of Ska.” One More Bullet was recorded in Valencia, Spain at RPM Studios by renowned producer Cubo, and engineered by the great Roger Garcia. Featuring eleven huge tracks of trademark Toasters ska, the album also features guest appearances from Greg Robinson (Mephiskapheles), Bufford O’Sullivan (Slackers, Easy Star Allstars), Claude Robillard (Daze of Dawn) and various yet-to-be-identified members of Los Skarnales. Hardhitting, catchy as hell, and upbeat, Bullet is proof positive that America’s longest running ska band can kick out the jams like no other.

Press Quotes “One of the most important American ska bands ever.” — PunkNews “The Toasters’ sound is aggressively working class, built on the big horns and brawny rhythms of the first ska revival. They sing of fighting and drinking and bad jobs and the limited prospects that the early ska bands—most recording on the Two-Tone label—also made their bread and butter.” — PopMatters “Jumping and running around on stage, these guys got the crowd sweating and dancing up a storm. Nobody could resist the third wave ska pioneers’ set. Everyone watched in amazement as these guys showed everyone how it was done.” — In Music We Trust

Overview

Aaron MoDavis: guitar, vocals Peter MoDavis: bass, vocals Brian Ashby: guitar Jonas Oesterle: drums

Philadelphia’s infamous foursome, The Teeth, spent the better part of 2006 locked away in a Northeast Philadelphia warehouse/studio. After spending most of 2005 and early 2006 touring the US in support of its 2005 EP Carry the Wood, the band was nearly out of sight. While the studio sound of The Teeth has been compared to the Beatles, early Bowie, and Elvis Costello, the band’s live performance has been likened to the Minutemen, Pavement, and even the Stooges. Thunderous bass lines, roaring brass sections, hand claps, foot stomps, jangly guitars, growls, screams, and of course those ever-so-beautiful harmonies that Teeth fans know and love—not to mention enough ideas to drive you insane. Recorded and produced by The Teeth and mixed by Nick Krill of the Spinto Band, You’re My Lover Now will be ready for your embrace in late April 2007. It will be backed by extensive touring, lots of publicity, and of course, a “strong will to succeed.”

Press Quotes “This band has Official High Pop Harmonies and you actually should listen to them and make them your new favorite band.” — The Fader “The vocals on Carry the Wood, the third recording by Philadelphia-area rockers The Teeth, suggest what Alex, the protagonist in Stanley Kubrick’s 1971 film A Clockwork Orange, might have sounded like had he been a sunny, loopy petty criminal rather than a vibrantly bitter sociopath.” — Washington Post “Ostensibly born with identical vocal cords, twin brothers Aaron and Peter MoDavis’s harmonies on Carry the Wood are thicker than blood as they cull Brit rock from the Kinks to Costello.” — CMJ New Music Monthly

Selling Points • Will tour the majority of 2007, with support slots for Dr. Dog’s first headlining tour. • Fans include RJD2, Al Kooper (Bob Dylan’s keyboardist and founder of Blood, Sweat, & Tears), WXPN, The Fader, and CMJ. • The Teeth has performed with Sunset Rubdown, Of Montreal, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Grandaddy, Why?, and more. • Major PR campaign coordinated by Biz 3 (Lady Sovereign, RJD2, Def Jux, Bonnie “Prince” Billy/Tortoise). • National college radio/specialty radio campaign coordinated by Pirate Radio Promotions. • Ads in Magnet, DIW, Pitchfork, and Arthur.

Smegma 33 1/3 Genre: Avant Rock/Experimental Label: Important Records CD: IPT 137 Price Code: P NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA

LP: IPT 145 Price Code: R NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA

Featured Artists Dr. Id: piano, harp, vocals, samples, remco, samples, toys, duck calls, gongs, record player/Ju Suk Reet Meate: vibraphonette, vocals, record player, Sidrassi organ, alto horn, pocket trumpet, slide guitar, effects, Uzbek horn/Conroy: vocals, vibraband, ju-per, lil sidrassi/Burned Mind: trombone, drums, electronics, ju-per, lil sidrassi/Oblivia: record player, homemade records, toys, ju-per, lil sidrassi

Overview 33 1/3 is Smegma’s tribute to their twentieth-century avant-garde and out-jazz influences. The title is one part reference to the happy revival of passionate vinyl listening in the twenty-first century, and one part celebration of over thirty-three years of being one of the most freethinking and original American underground groups. Its focus, ideas, and determination has brought the group through more than three decades and to this day it remains unparalleled, original, and highly influential. Smegma. Seriously. They’ve been at it for so long now that you can’t really even say they sound like anyone else. They’re all here on 33 1/3—Oblivia, Ju Suk Reet Meate, Burned Mind, Conroy, Dr. Id—the core group drumming up their influences and pulling off another burning album of magnificent proportions. While Smegma has never really fit in anywhere, the group’s influence on the modern avant-garde and improvised noise scene is absolutely undeniable. While it has had two feet firmly planted in avant-garde & free jazz, one must not forget its rock roots. Influences aside, no matter how much everyone else sounds like Smegma, you can bet that Smegma is always going to sound like nobody else. It may just be the greatest American band. Ever.

Press Quotes “A group improvisation with a heap of unfinished sixties business factored in. Free Music in its grandest and least superficial sense. A ritual of fusing all musics and non-musics at the level of the hum, the blap, the tink, and the boom.” — Richard Metzger “Once again, the times seem to have conspired to situate Smegma’s consistent refusal of static generic form as the central working paradigm for a whole new generation of musicians.” — The Wire

Asa Irons & Swann Miller Asa Irons & Swann Miller Genre: Avant Rock/Folk Label: Important Records CD: IPT 143 Price Code: P NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA

Featured Artists Overview

Asa Irons: guitar, vocals Swann Miller: vocals

This record is forever. After listening to it you’ll realize that it doesn’t matter that Asa Irons plays in Witch with J Mascis as well as the acclaimed folk outfit Feathers. This record needs no associations and its songs are so timeless that they feel as if they’ve been passed around for generations and hardly need any recording medium at all. This is the first release from Asa Irons and Swann Miller, but it sounds like they’ve lived in each other’s voices for a million years. Irons’s deep-breath voice lays down a mossy hill for Miller’s beautiful voice to tread upon. His guitar work is simply intricate, and his fingerpicking perfectly suits the way their voices combine to become one. This record always has been and always will be. This record is forever. In Asa Irons’s own words: “After spending years in New Hampshire and Nova Scotia, I began writing songs about my Northeastern window through which I view the world. Most of the pieces represent strong fundamentals in my life, such as living without comfort resources like electricity and running water, the building trends of carpentry and masonry with which I make my living, and the slow-paced rural life in which I grew up. The land of Northeastern North America is very important to me and compelled me to describe it in the form of music … One of the people connected to me through music and lifestyle is Swann Miller. She is the daughter of a man who was a good friend of my father’s. Through the seventies our fathers built houses together around NH and also played a lot of music. So, I have known Swann my whole life and perhaps it was inevitable that we made music together … The album is a quick glimpse of a worldview from Southern New Hampshire through the voices of two old friends whose fathers were friends before them.”

Overview “Oliveros’s music makes you listen afresh to the simplest sounds.” — New York Times

Pauline Oliveros Accordion & Voice Genre: Experimental Label: Important Records CD: IPT 140 Price Code: P NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA

Pauline Oliveros (b. 1930) is an accordionist and composer who currently resides in Kingston, New York. Her instrument is tuned in Just Intonation and she often includes it in her meditative improvisational music. Her music is not meditative in the sense that it is intended for listening to while meditating; rather, each piece is a form of meditation, such as her aptly titled Sonic Meditations. A central figure in post-war electronic art music, Oliveros is one of the original members of the San Francisco Tape Music Center (along with Morton Subotnick, Ramon Sender, Terry Riley, and Anthony Martin), which was the electronic music resource on the US West Coast during the 1960s. The center later moved to Mills College, where she was its first director, and it is now called the Center for Contemporary Music. In her performances and recordings, Oliveros often improvises with the Expanded Instrument System, an electronic signal processing system she designed.

Selling Points • Pauline Oliveros’s first recording as a soloist. • Oliveros is an internationally respected and influential twenty-first century composer. • Promotional mailing by Important Records. • Ads in The Wire.

Overview “A knockout piece given a knockout performance.” — Option The Wanderer is based on a single modal scale (B C# D D# E F# G#) and rhythmic modes based on a meter consisting of 3/4 and 3/8. Part I, Song, is intended to explore the unique resonant qualities of accordion reeds through long sounds. Subtle variations come about from differences in tuning and air pressure. Part II, Dance, demonstrates the sharp accenting power of the accordion bellows in a mixture of cross rhythms characteristic of jigs, reels, batucadas, Bulgars, klezmer forms, Cajun dances, and music of other diverse cultures. The Wanderer was composed in November 1982 especially for the Springfield Accordion Orchestra, directed by Sam Falcetti. This recording documents The Wanderer’s world premiere, as it was performed on January 27, 1983 at Marymount Manhattan Theatre. The orchestra consists of twenty accordions, two bass accordions, and five percussionists, with Pauline Oliveros as soloist and Falcetti conducting. Horse Sings from Cloud, written in 1975, is one of Oliveros’s best-known works. Like most of her Sonic Meditations, it can be performed vocally and/or instrumentally, solo or in collaboration. This time, Horse Sings from Cloud is performed in ensemble. Joining Pauline Oliveros (bandoneion) are Heloise Gold (harmonium), Julia Haines (accordion), and Linda Montano (concertina). This quartet version incorporates the microtonal differences in tuning of the selected instruments, creating reed sounds somewhat similar to the shimmering of a Balinese gamelan.

Selling Points • Pauline Oliveros is a highly recognized twenty-first century composer. • Promotional mailing by Important Records. • Ads in The Wire.

Overview “There is no need to argue: Merzbow stands as the most important artist in noise music.” — All Music Guide Over sixty minutes of total analog destruction by noise king Merzbow and Brooklyn noise boss Carlos Giffoni. This live collaboration was recorded during Giffoni’s Synth Destruction Japan Tour in September 2006. This is sound totalism, and is as heavy as it comes: totally brutal, totally ugly, totally beautiful, totally intense, totally classic, totally analog, totally synth, total destruction. Author, activist, painter, and sound artist Masami Akita has been at the foreground of experimental music for over twenty-five years. Inspired by psychedelic rock, free jazz, and early electronic composition—as well the physical arts, especially Kurt Schwitters’ Merzbau—Akita has created a musical language all his own. Carlos Giffoni, despite his young age, has been an in-demand Brooklyn collaborator for many years. He has worked with Jim O’Rourke, Thurston Moore, Nels Cline, Chris Corsano, Fe-Mail, and many more. In 2005 he released his first solo record, Welcome Home, on Important Records. This is Merzbow and Carlos Giffoni’s first collaborative release.

Selling Points • Merzbow with Carlos Giffoni! Both have released numerous albums and collaborations on Important Records. • Intense artwork by Jenny Akita. • Carlos Giffoni is one is the organizers of the genre-defining No Fun Festival. • Merzbow is recognized as the crowned king of noise music. • Promotional mailing by Important Records. • Ads in The Wire.

Here Where Nothing Grows CD: IPT 73 (P) NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA

This split 12” release is limited to 1,000 copies and pressed on rust and gray colored vinyl. It is packaged in a screen-printed Mylar jacket with a screen-printed Mylar insert and a screen-printed paper insert. Cover artwork is of a nineteenth-century statue located at the center of Portland, MN, the dramatic coastal home of both groups. This is the sound of a musical brotherhood entirely unique to Ocean and Conifer. Over the years, Ocean and Conifer have shared vans, stages, members, practice spaces, apartments, beers, a city, and a kindred musical spirit. In a lot of ways it’s a shock that this split hasn’t happened already, but perhaps it was so obvious that nobody noticed it needed to happen. Sometimes the truth is right beneath your nose. With original drummer Nate Nadeau back in the group, Conifer is heavier, tighter, and more united than ever before. The band has toured and player with Mono, Black Dice, High On Fire, Asva, Mouth of the Architect, and many more, and Summer 2006 saw the group embark on an ambitious twenty-six-city tour. Ocean’s twentyminute epic was recorded in the same sessions that birthed their next album, currently untitled, for Important. Containing all of the epic minimalist intensity and robust heaviness that has gained them international attention, “Durance Vile” is a whole new level.

Selling Points • A deluxe vinyl-only release from two of the heaviest bands in America. Packaging includes two layers of screen-printed Mylar and a screen-printed 12” insert. • Ocean is Important’s top-selling band. Their debut album Here Where Nothing Grows has accumulated a tremendous amount of praise in the international music press. • Ocean’s sophomore album, currently untitled, will be released on Important in May 2007. • Conifer’s next record will be released on Important in 2007. • Ads in The Wire.

The label’s primary focus is to promote inspiring women artists, because women rock. Jane Awesome comes to NAIL via Australian Cattle God.

Overview The Little Bicycles’ debut album, Broken Hearts and Tired Legs, is packed full of energetic melodies paired with Nadia Kean’s bittersweet reflective stories of young heartache, broken homes, and innocence lost. Every song gets stuck in your head—there’s no filler on this album. Singer-songwriter Nadia Kean has been singing and writing music as a solo artist for most of her life. Andrea Hendel grew up playing violin and attended the Manhattan School of Music for five years. She started playing bass after meeting Kean through roller derby. Hendel’s classical background, evident in her melodic & flowing bass lines, serves the pop-rock format of the band perfectly. Bryan Nelson is a seasoned and respected Austin musician/engineer who has worked at Austin’s Sweatbox Studio for the past twelve years. Overview “Sugar & Gold, a San Francisco combo made up of ex-members of Dura-Delinquent, sound perfectly at home slipped in beside selections by Call and Response and a tranquilized Tower of Power.” — SF Bay Guardian Sugar & Gold take classic harmony-based songwriting and yacht rock and kick them into the twenty-first century with a healthy dose of Rick James and Young Americans-era David Bowie. Like contemporaries Scissor Sisters and Phoenix, Sugar & Gold reap the benefits of the last three decades in electronic and soul music, blending sampled beats, live drums, and an array of classic funk and electro instrumentation. With the little money they could scrape together, the members bought a van instead of a producer, toured the US, and ended up recording everywhere along the way. The result is Crème, their eleven-song debut, which reflects the moods and characters of many neighborhoods across the country, blending them all into a harmonious whole by finding the common denominator. In Sugar & Gold a country that has been continually polarized by politics and economics, S&G finds that music is still the Crème Genre: Alt Rock language of the soul and the greatest uniting force. Overview “2005’s Best Noise Pop Discovery. Kids, here is the group you’ve been waiting for.” — SF Weekly San Francisco-based supergroup Still Flyin’ was assembled in late 2004 by Sean Rawls. What began as a lighthearted nod to good times soon became a juggernaut that no one in the band expected, and before long the group had become a San Francisco phenomenon. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that the band counts members of Track Star, Aislers Set, Ladybug Transistor, Love Is All, Maserati, and Red Pony Clock amongst it’s rotating collective. Za Cloud is the second EP in a thematic series that started with Time Wrinkle, and like the first it’s filled with indie-pop and twee jams gone rocksteady.

Athens, GA’s Je Suis France perfectly embodies the town’s reputation for whimsical yet adventurous indie rock experimentation. The group’s only agenda is to bring the jammz in as many ways possible, and to that end it plays a constantly evolving stream of psychedelic rock, drawing on influences like Gong, Superchunk, Outkast, and Spaceman 3. Je Suis France’s third full-length, Afrikan Majik, tips its hat to the mighty Krautrock but doesn’t stop there. Balancing slowly building jams with shorter bursts of melodic aggression, JSF takes listeners on a guideless tour of normally pretentious rock sub-genres like prog, fuzz pop, psychedelic, and even techno.

Goodbye East, Goodbye West documents the refinement and growth of Madagascar’s unique sound.
