OVERVIEW

Pink Martini—the genre-bending, best-selling, supremely talented, and raucously fun twelve-piece ensemble that the New Yorker calls simply “beautiful,” “sophisticated,” and “breathtaking”—returns with Hey Eugene!, a twelve-track sonic journey anchored by deft songwriting and a no-holds-barred dose of cabaret showmanship. “We’re kind of like musical archaeologists, bringing melodies and rhythms from different parts of the world together to create something that is modern,” explains bandleader, artistic director, and founder Thomas Lauderdale. Delivered with sultry grace by lead singer China Forbes, Hey Eugene! shines throughout—from the golden-era Hollywood melody of “Everywhere” to the French cabaret of “Ojala.” Other collaborations anchor the set as well: the pan-world “Dosvedanya, Mio Bombino” with its Latin-meets-Russian beat and globetrotting subject matter, plus the Forbes-Lauderdale-penned sexy sway of “City of Night.” Peruvian percussionist Martin Zarzar debuts the romantically complex “Mar Desconocido” and bassist Phil Baker adds the quiet beauty of “Cante e Dance.” The group also mines the past for hidden gems, including the Japanese-language track “Taya Tan” and their first-ever recording in Arabic, “Bukra wba’do.” Meanwhile, clever lyricism leads to an empowering dose of pop perfection on the title track by Forbes (about a boy she met at a party who asked for her number and never called). Finally, jazz legend Jimmy Scott makes a stunning vocal guest appearance in a duet with Forbes on the closing song “Tea for Two.” With Hey Eugene! Pink Martini has returned with an exhilarating album full of uncompromising musicianship, hope, beauty, and joy!

HEY EUGENE!

PRESS QUOTES

“This ensemble from Portland, Oregon, wowed the fabulous on the Cannes party circuit … but that accomplishment hardly addresses the beautiful and sophisticated music of Pink Martini … breathtaking.” — The New Yorker “[Pink Martini] delivers a knowing sophistication backed by skillful arrangements … Ms. Forbes is an unpretentious, pitch-perfect chanteuse who can be breathy and girlish or sultry … she tempers heartbreak with savoir-faire.” — New York Times “No matter how Pink Martini gets described, there’s always an element being overlooked, a reliance on phrases such as lounge, cosmopolitan rumba or neo-classical that only tells part of this rich story. Impressive at every musician’s station, this ensemble produces music that’s charming and elegant.” – Variety

BIOGRAPHY

Somewhere between a 1930s Cuban dance orchestra, a classical chamber music ensemble, a Brazilian marching street band, and Japanese film noir is the twelve-piece Pink Martini. Part language lesson, part Hollywood musical, the Portland-based “little orchestra” was created in 1994 by Harvard graduate Thomas M. Lauderdale to play at political fundraisers for progressive causes such as public broadcasting, clean water, libraries, civil rights, and affordable housing. Pink Martini’s debut CD Sympathique was released on the band’s own label, Heinz Records. Originally released in 1997, Sympathique met with rave reviews, finding a place in the hearts of many. Building a legacy though unstoppable word of mouth, select high-profile symphony dates, prominent placement in film & television, and fashionable private appearances, Pink Martini set the stage for the release for their highly-anticipated follow-up. Hang On Little Tomato, Pink Martini’s sophomore album, featured mostly original songs written by the band and its extended family. Drawing on themes articulated in the first album, Hang On Little Tomato was the result of the group’s diverse collaborations and inspirations. From an advertisement for Hunt’s Ketchup from a 1964 issue of Life magazine to a dance sequence in the 1950 Italian film Anna, Hang On Little Tomato includes songs in French, Italian, Japanese, Croatian, Spanish, and English.

Overview

Josh Malerman: vocals, guitar Chad Stocker: bass Derek Berk: drums

The High Strung did not set out to write and record its “defining” album but, call it an accident or dub it luck, it has. Get the Guests is surely one of the most original albums released in 2007, and some of its wonder lies in the fact that it doesn’t sound like a band trying to do anything …it just sounds like a band that is. In all aspects, Get the Guests is a far cry from the band’s previous two releases (These Are Good Times and Moxie Bravo), but it also makes you listen to those albums and think, “ah, now I see where they were headed this whole time.” Character sketches have adorned the band’s canon before, but never as much as they do now. “Rimbaud/Rambo” introduces a narrator trying to decide which titular man is a better romantic model, while “The Curator” exposes a malicious museum curator covering the museum walls with his own work. The harmonies are striking, the bass and drums are creative as hell, and Josh Malerman’s voice is as unique and convincing as it’s ever been. The High Strung’s self-abusive tour schedule took them to sixty libraries last summer, a juxtaposition documented by NPR’s This American Life and an irony not lost on the hundreds of teens who got to see them for the first time. Bob Pollard called the band’s 2005 release Moxie Bravo a “masterpiece” … a sentiment that frightened the members into thinking that they might not be able to do better. But with Get the Guests, they surely have.

Press Quotes “Joyful, uptight, cymbal-bashing sound that borrows as much from the Motor City’s recent garage-rock scene as from the Beatles. The New Wave revival has produced its first acolytes.” — Rolling Stone “The High Strung is worthy of the legendary Nuggets box set.” — Blender “We vouch that The High Strung is actually geeky in a cool way.” — Village Voice

Selling Points • Engineered & produced by Jim Diamond (White Stripes, Dirtbombs). • The High Strung has played over 1,300 shows in the last five years, with more touring to come. The group is an NPR favorite. • The High Strung has toured and/or performed with Robert Pollard, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Mates of State, and more. • Working with Girlie Action (My Morning Jacket) for a national PR campaign. • College/specialty radio campaign by Pirate Radio (Tom Waits, Dr. Dog, Lily Allen). • Ads in Pitchfork, Magnet, DIW, Harp, and Arthur.

Beaten Awake is a rock band from Kent, Ohio. After cutting their teeth in legendary art bands such as the Six Parts Seven, The Party of Helicopters, and Harriet the Spy, the band’s four members decided to get back to basics and explore their folk and rock roots. Let’s Get Simplified is the group’s Audio Eagle debut and first proper album. The title says it all: the members getting down to brass tacks and baring their souls with heartfelt, beautiful songwriting that touches on friendship, love, desperation, and hometown pride. Time flies, and we always notice too late. Beaten Awake knows that all too well. This is music about holding on to the moment and making the most of things. Let’s Get Simplified was recorded and produced by Patrick Carney of The Black Keys.

Press Quotes “The foursome’s arresting debut has an amplitude of movement, wonder, and heartache.” — Boston Globe “The album has a strange beauty to it that, come to think of it, is not unlike the late, great Drake.” — Cleveland Free Times “Beaten Awake’s melodies drift like a riverboat ride over jangling guitars and sympathetic peals of organ.” — Scene Magazine “New bands aren’t supposed to sound this good.” — Akron Beacon Journal

Selling Points • Features members of Six Parts Seven, The Party of Helicopters, and Harriet the Spy. • Record and mixed by Patrick Carney of The Black Keys in his basement studio. • Extensive tours with The Black Keys and Heartless Bastards. • In-house servicing to CMJ’s top fifty reporting stations. • In-house publicity and marketing to national/regional print and internet media.

Overview

Houseguest is a famous pop rock band from Akron, Ohio. Houseguest’s live shows have, in the past, turned into debacles, with shirt removal, sing-alongs, and drunken arguments between band members as par for the course. Tales grow with the telling, and now such unruliness is often expected of the band. The members are more than willing to comply, but Houseguest is much more than just five badly behaved college bums. The songwriting is well honed, and the sound is the band’s own. The group has seen much of the horror of life, but would rather instill hope than coddle despair. Save your grief for the funeral! Houseguest is here for the party. High Strangeness is the first album by Houseguest on Audio Eagle Records. It was recorded and produced by Patrick Carney of The Black Keys at the Eagle’s Nest in Spring 2006. The album’s fourteen tracks range from frenetic pop barnburners to heartfelt, anthemic ballads.

Press Quotes “While the abandon of their stage presence is something to behold, what they are capable of committing in the studio is staggeringly beautiful, skewed pop.” — PopMatters [8/10] “Houseguest is simply the best pop band in the country.” — McSweeney’s “Akron’s Houseguest is the kind of visitor you can receive into your home without reservations. High Strangeness will quickly become a permanent resident, filling your quarters with music that’s relentlessly catchy and smart, tight but jittery, muscle toned but not bulging. Grade: A.” — Columbus Alive “Houseguest is a bunch of smart guys making smart, fun music.” — Akron Beacon Journal

Selling Points • Debut album on Audio Eagle Records from acclaimed indie rock band Houseguest. • Recorded and produced by Patrick Carney of The Black Keys. • Nominated for Cleveland Scene and Cleveland Free Times awards for Best Indie Rock Band in 2006 & 2007. • Specialized in-house publicity and marketing by Audio Eagle. • In-house servicing to CMJ’s top fifty reporting stations. • In-house publicity and marketing to national/regional print and internet media.

Downtown Nashville, just off the dirty Cumberland River, is a wayward home for junkies, poets, homeless buskers, and starving musicians. In the watering holes that line the neon-studded Broadway Street, music is played twenty-four hours a day by the hardest, tightest, hungriest gentlemen. Each a master at his trade, they fight and wrestle with the sounds of an ever-changing world, hoping to someday master the blues and perform honky tonk ballads like the gone-but-not-forgotten country angels of old. For years there was one band that shone brighter than the rest: Th’ Legendary Shack Shakers. As time has passed, the lineup has changed and the band’s fan base has grown worldwide, but the quartet captured here was the best, sharpest group of villains to ever play under the name. This is a recording dating back to the year 2000, when they were unknown and fighting to live.

Selling Points • This rough live demo is the only existing recording of this classic lineup. • Chris Scruggs, grandson of legendary Earl Scruggs, has played in BR-549 and performed at the Opry countless times. • Joe Buck now plays bass for Hank Williams III, and also tours and plays solo. • Chris Detlaf plays drums in many Nashville sessions, and plays behind Rosie Flores. • Th’ Legendary Shack Shakers have toured the world countless times with such acts as Robert Plant, Junior Brown, Southern Culture on the Skids, and the Reverend Horton Heat.

Overview “Using loops built from piano, clarinet, and accordion lines, Dwinell creates a base for his chugging, probing guitar and gently sung poetry. Although Dwinell’s electric guitars do the occasional cameo to provide color, acoustic guitar is the album’s dominant instrument, where he makes like another of his heroes, the late acoustic-six-string guru John Fahey.” — Boston Phoenix Nonloc is the solo guise of Mark Dwinell, the guitar-slinging ringleader of East Coast spontaneous trance rockers Bright. Between Hemispheres is a heady excursion into repetition and the unyielding strength of unrepentant melody. Fascinated by minimalist composers such as Steve Reich and Terry Riley, Nonloc seeks to focus on the microtonal universes and hypnotic netherworlds minimalism awakens from repetition, while constructing ivory towers of melody ever upwards. Guitars provide focus, but the elaborate color accumulation of Between Hemispheres is dominated by alternate layering Nonloc of acoustic instruments such as piano, accordion, mandolin, and cello. Whereas Bright will use vocals Between Hemispheres sparingly as instrumental color, Nonloc spices up the instrumental forays by peppering tunes with Genre: Avant Rock lyrics that are direct and at times strikingly personal. Overview

The members of Japan’s Ruins have extensive experience and tireless commitment! A furious barrage of explosive and intricately composed drum(s) and bass, Ruins covers all stops between hardcore’s hysteric intensity, metal’s pummeling dynamics, and the confounding inscription of progressive rock. No slack. No slop. Absolute masters of quick-change, stop-start tempos and time signatures, Ruins crafts an unprecedented amalgam of originality, all sung in a peculiar language of the group’s own invention. The first album to feature bassist Sasaki Hisashi, Refusal Fossil [Special Edition] re-issues the long out-of-print Refusal Fossil full-length, plus five previously unreleased tracks, all remixed and re-mastered by the band’s Yoshida Tatsuya (Koenjihyakkei). Also featuring a host of guest musicians from the Japanese avant scene (including Yamamoto Seiichi of Boredoms), Refusal Fossil [Special Edition] boasts twenty-five cuts in all—over an hour-long blast of zig-zag calisthenics!

Overview “The music on their Skin Graft debut, Turbo Mattress, keeps the beats as jerky as a racecar driver with the e-brake on, with guitar noise as jumper cables and Paul’s surreal lyrics as a hallucinogen—fans of a more fucked Ex Models aesthetic, take note.” — The Stranger Hot on the heels of the Chinese Stars’ new album Listen To Your Left Brain, Skin Graft proudly represents the band’s debut CD Turbo Mattress in a new edition. Previously available as a “weaponized, Chinese throwing-star-shaped CD,” Turbo Mattress was quick to sell but proved problematic for those wishing to play the disc in front-feed CD players, CD changers, or darn near anything other than a tray-loading disc player. So for this new edition, Turbo Mattress has been pressed on a transparent CD, maintaining the illusion of a Chinese throwing star with the added bonus of being playable on all CD players and drives!

Overview ellul’s self-titled debut is, unlike much contemporary vocal music, genuinely surprising. Recorded up and down the California coast in a vaulted hilltop church, an industrial warehouse, a community center, and a living room, the album was produced and engineered by Chris Schlarb (Liz Janes & Create (!), Castanets, I Heart Lung). Over the course of a year the group added contributions from Adam Garcia (Timonium, Imaad Wasif) on drums and Anthony Shadduck (Nels Cline, I Heart Lung) on acoustic and electric bass. Lyrically, the group examines the painful history of a transplanted Haitian son confronting a nation for its second-degree murder of a people; lovers asking the questions of the age; and a heart longing to be known. ellul asks for reasons—for calm and coups, love and hatred—and brings the listener into each movement with honest, inventive music. Sometimes subtle, sometimes raw, the vocal harmonies are both unsettling and sweetly evocative. Dueling live/ programmed drums, shimmering guitar distortions, and looped electronics converge with choral harmonies and dark electronic textures. ellul has made a fiercely creative debut … now let’s see who’s listening.

Overview

Kanna: guitar, vocals Miya: bass, vocals Sayuri: drums, vocals

Bleach 03 is made up of three young Japanese girls who shred like Primus meets Slayer, with female shrieks and melodies scattered about. It has been an internationally touring band for several years, shocking audiences in the UK, Japan, and all over the US. The group’s newest CD, The Head That Controls Both Right and Left Sides Eats Meats and Slobbers Even Today, displays strength and maturity while retaining the excitement and rambunctious attitude of a new band. The disc is very well conceived, and the songs are catchy, hard-hitting, and precise. Anyone who has ever seen the band live will tell you that Bleach 03 is the fastest, loudest, and most brutal Japanese girl band ever seen, and this CD is a firm representation of that chaotic, powerful idea.

Press Quotes “Bleach 03 show the rare ability to play hardcore that is melodically driven without being emo, screamo, or even remotely pop-punk.” — Tiny Mix Tapes “Kanna, Miya, and Sayuri waste no time raising Canaan once again, conjuring their barrage of marginally refined garage rock that has earned the girls from Okinawa a small cult following.” — Sea of Tranquility “Get blasted by three tiny Okinawan girls … They hit this death metal stride that was sprung from the loins of Death Angel or The Melvins and maintained this pace for thirty brutal minutes … Collect your broken teeth, eardrums, and stereotypes and proceed to the back. Super highly recommended.” — Metroactive San Jose

Overview “A combination of calm guitar atmospherics and epic-scale cascades of feedback.” — All Music Guide Lebanon is a primarily instrumental band from Tel Aviv that blends metal, prog, and psychedelic elements into its layered and complex compositions. Many things influence the band: records, beer, art, women, philosophy, and the political catastrophe that is their country. The group’s first album, Sunken City, has been widely praised in Israel. Many reviewers describe Lebanon as a “post-rock montage”—a very diversely influenced, impatient, and dense version of “epic” post rock. Planet Rubble was recorded in September 2006 at Bellingham’s Mars Studio at the peak of the band’s first US tour. Much like its predecessor, Planet Rubble is a math-rock journey into destruction. Songs are even more dense and deconstructive, and some songs add vocals.

Selling Points • Has toured the US twice, covering both coasts, the Southwest, and the Midwest. • Will return to North America for two months in late Summer/early Fall 2007. • Has shared stages with Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Sunn O))), and more. • Service to college & community radio stations, music press, webzines, and new media. • Ads in Punk Planet, Copper Press, Razorcake,Verbicide, Pop Culture Press, Magnet, CMJ, and more

Lozen is a heavy art-rock duo from Tacoma that sounds like what might have happened if Nancy & Ann Wilson from Heart grew up listening to The Melvins and Black Sabbath. Lozen is made up of two girls, Hozoji and Justice, who sing scary/beautiful harmonies over heavy riffs and pounding drums. Their music is thought–provoking, mysterious, rhythmically hypnotizing, and dynamically flowing. They have a variety of historical and musical influences that shape their unique sound—from Lozen herself, an Apache warrior woman, to blues, jazz, classic rock, hip-hop, and the underground music scene. These two beautiful women can usually be found in their tour van on the West Coast, occasionally as far east as Austin. Lozen likes to focus on live performance, and each tour’s goal is to venture to as many new cities as possible. Catch their upcoming May 2007 tour with Bleach 03!

Chris Funk, lead guitarist for The Decemberists and special guest of the season-closing spectacular episode of The Colbert Report, has made a gorgeous, instrumental space-folk recording with a little help from his friends. In 2005, Chris Funk and his family moved into their new home in Portland’s historic Mississippi neighborhood. He would play various instruments on his porch during hot summer nights, which caught the attention of his neighbors. He soon found out there was an unusual amount of musical activity on his block, and that he was surrounded by closet folksmen and recovering band geeks. Funk invited his neighbors in for weekly living room hootenannies, and this recording documents those times in an array of cover songs and original “jams” written in a haze fueled by fellowship, libations, and other unmentionables.

Selling Points • Side project of Capitol Records recording artists The Decemberists. • Bandleader Chris Funk was recently a featured guest on Comedy Central’s Colbert Report. • May 2007 West Coast tour booked by Bigshot Touring. • Includes covers of songs by Radiohead, Fleetwood Mac, Massive Attack, Pseudosix, and more. • Full PR campaign to over one hundred media outlets and blogs. • Full college radio mailing by AAM. • Ads in ReadyMade, Magnet, Resonance,Venus, Under the Radar, Pitchfork, Skyscraper, Rockpile, and more.

Overview “Jeff London excels in crafting just the kind of achingly honest folk-tinged songwriting that is capable of breaking down unconscious barriers … Music has always served the function of helping its performers heal themselves, and London may just help me balance the ugly memories associated with his namesake with far more positive associations.” — Delusions of Adequacy A folk triumph years in the making, The Bane of Progress is a quiet, reflective, stirring album with all the right touches. Bolstered by a cast of ringers including members of The Decemberists and Norfolk & Western, these smoldering, literate ballads are evocative—human, forlorn, and searching are all apt descriptions. But there’s a silver lining to these cloudy songs, and Jeff London charms listeners with his classic melodies and earnest tenor.

Overview “Think Stereolab with flute loops and breakbeats, or Standards-era Tortoise with a veil of hookahlounge sensuality, and you’ve almost got a feel for this local duo’s pretty damn unique experiments in funk.” — Seattle Weekly Seattle’s Velella Velella makes music that is blissed-out, tonal, enthusiastic, and grooving. At the band’s disposal is a mess of instruments: drum machine, drum kit, snarly bass, ‘tremmy’ vibes, clean guitar lines, bassy Roland and overdriven Fafisa keyboards, drippy guitar washes, and vocals. Somewhere in this sonic mélange there are influences being pulled out of a hat—The Sea and Cake, Out Hud, Stereolab— but after spending some time with The Bay of Biscay it becomes abundantly clear that, like the jellyfish it is named after, Velella Velella swims in its own sea.

Krist Krueger: vocals, guitars, bass, accordion, banjo, piano, organ, keyboards/ Ryan Heise: drums/Ann Marie Hoffman: violin/Jana Misener: cello/Cory Gray: trumpet, piano/Ryland Bouchard: clarinet/Craig Martin: vibes, xylophone

Portland’s Krist Krueger is a rare talent. As a solo artist under the name Southerly, he branded himself a dedicated DIY recording artist and unrelenting touring performer. Now, as a full band, Southerly carries on these traditions—as well as a dedication to beautiful, melodic, rhythmic tunes with heartfelt naked lyricism. Their new album, a fourteen-song masterpiece of indie music, could not possibly display this any better. Southerly began in June 2003, releasing short runs of hand-packaged cassette tapes on Krueger’s previous imprint (dharmakayamusic/ DKM). In 2006, Southerly re-formed as a full band, and is currently gearing up for the release of its sophomore full-length as well as prepping for two full US tours and a proposed European tour in 2007.

Press Quotes “Southerly’s acoustic music treads a fine line between lush and minimal, his linear guitar shifting in and out of intense percussion and pastoral orchestrations.” — Billboard “The songs are especially well written and very original … a great CD to listen to if you want to sit back and reflect on your life.” — Punk Planet “Krist Krueger is a boundless talent hiding among our ranks. The Portland artist’s lush, orchestral pop is reminiscent of Richard Ashcroft, Elliott Smith, Brendan Benson, and Stuart Staples, and, yes, his songs are often even better than theirs.” — Willamette Week “Immaculately captured with ultra–vivid production tricks, the songs found here, and on Southerly’s other discs, manage to be both introspective and highly accessible. Who knew that you could make bitter pills go down so smoothly!” — Portland Mercury

Selling Points • LP available from People in a Position to Know Records via Greyday Records. • Second full-length, following sixteen months of aggressive touring. • Full regional and US tours planned for 2007, including a May release-oriented tour. • Southerly was featured on the Kill Rock Stars comp The Song the Hare Heard. • Full indie & major press campaign, CMJ and specialty radio campaign, and aggressive digital/blog/new media campaign by Fanatic Promotion. • Ads in Magnet, CMJ NMM, Modern Fix, and more.

Postulate II follows the pattern set forth by its predecessor, effortlessly blending the indie, alternative, punk/hardcore, and singer-songwriter worlds with such ease and comfort that each song leaves the listener more elated than the previous one. “Post Modernist Trap: The Stalkers Guide to the Universe,” which opens up In Vision Vanish Invisible, is a solid, almost radio-friendly anthem that showcases History Invades’ talent for turning electronic noise and chaotic repetition into a groove no soul can refuse. The rest of the album follows suit, sometimes veering into dark, electronic ballads or diving into songs rooted in a more brooding and epic rock. With such a wide variety of sounds, In Vision Vanish Invisible could never be pigeonholed as a rock record or an electronic record or even the all–encompassing “indie” record. The word to name the sound isn’t available, so finding a term is futile. History Invades is in constant motion, and won’t ever doubt your desire and ability to keep up.

Press Quotes “Everything about History Invades exudes attitude. From the chopped up, transmedia-inspired artwork to the circumlocutory song titles, they demand attention.” — Splendid “History Invades exudes an eloquent way of telling us that the world we live in is not at all the world we live in.” — DecoyMusic “Pure genius right from the get-go, History Invades breaks ground into new territory while maintaining an edge and holding hooks throughout the entire record to create an all-encompassing masterpiece.” — Hybrid

According to Karl Blau, the world needs a little more Bret Lunsford, guitarist for Beat Happening and member of the band D+. Overview “Orange has summoned an effortless crop of melodies and, moreover, an adult’s surefootedness to buoy his journeyman musings.” — CMJ Thanksgiving’s eleventh release, Bitches Is Lord, is a revelation of the highest order as Adrian Orange sets out to capture the energy, presence, and full-bodied force of a Thanksgiving live performance. This new album has more of the meaningful songs that Orange does so well, but this time around things just sound fierce. Hints of Johnny Cash and Crazy Horse-era Neil Young are touchstones. Minimal dirges and cloaked political blues butt up against triumphantly colorful anthems. Bitches Is Lord lyrically drafts propositions for a new era of humanity while exploring the painful beauty of what it is to be a human. This is, notably, the first album completely performed, recorded, mixed, and produced by Adrian Orange himself. Little Aida Mad Country

Little Aida celebrates the chaotic nature of collective “reality,” rummaging through the madness of contemporary life in search of the spirit. Creating a soundtrack for the apocalypse, Little Aida frames its unique vision of the world with enigmatic imagery that frees the imagination. The weird, wonderful, and profoundly spiritual lyrics meander between a childlike wonder of the world and the dark solace of earthy wisdom. Written by two sisters on their travels, the music is instilled with memories of the disturbed European fairytale, the vast Australian desert skies, and the California dream. Mad Country is Little Aida’s first release since Confessions (produced by Ninja Tunes’ DJ Vadim.)

Overview “Modernstate is beautifully delicate and, at the same time, strong with lyrical invention. Schauer’s dramatic ability to tell an honest story is what carries through and keeps you. It is sure, rudder-like, balanced, and moves forward with honest human emotion. It’s folk, but it’s also punk, experimental, lo-fi rock, and blends all of this into some sort of mutant confessional pop.” — Portland Mercury Three years in the making, Modernstate’s sophomore album The Burning Beard guides us through all facets of its creator, Sam Schauer. Recorded in a large room overlooking Portland’s darkest avenue, the sound of a working class city embeds itself in the content of the record. The Burning Beard is a desperate record, a living and breathing testament to self-denial, determination, and regret. Schauer’s stark musical candor surfaces with lyrical honesty that is easily mirrored by brooding melodic drums and understated glockenspiel. As his baritone journeys through the sharply tragic doom-folk of the album, the city is perched on his windowsill, somehow accompanying his pocket symphony and hinting at the notion that there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Selling Points • The long-awaited sophomore release from Modernstate. • Sam Schauer is also a member of the Marriage Records noise band …Worms. • Full press campaign by Matt Wright PR. • Ads will run in Magnet, No Depression, DIW, and Paste.

Overview “Like Neil Young and Beck joining Jane’s Addiction or Fountains of Wayne.” — Mojo This Sacramento four-piece, which treads roots-rock and experimental pop à la Grandaddy or Chuck Prophet, is best known for its ripping live sets and audience of faithful followers. This outing is co-produced by Tape Op magazine founder John Bacciagalupi, and his influence is noted in the odd and wistful instrumentation that defies any sort of “Americana” tag.

Overview Although this is Chad Serhal’s debut release, he is no stranger to album recordings. Serhal spent years touring and recording with Calibretto, and his bass instrumentation can be heard on In the Dark, the first album from Harley Poe. Additionally, he played guitar in Everything, Now! and traveled with the band on their 2006 national tour in support of Police, Police! The Last Picture Show, a collection of stories shaped by geography and happenstance, is foremost a folk album, reminiscent of very early Bruce Springsteen or Paul Simon and on par with contemporary artists such as Denison Witmer and Damien Jurado.

Selling Points • Eleven debut tracks from an artist central to numerous recognized Indiana bands. • Packaging printed with 1897 C&P letterpress to produce an antiqued look with an embossed feel. • In-house promotion and radio campaign; tour publicity through NAIL Media.

Overview “This is hard-hitting industrial EBM that just makes me want to stand up and dance from the first song to the last … I really hope to see many more releases from this project in the future. Hats off to Vasi Vallis.” — Moving Hands [9/10] After the break-up of NamNamBulu, producer/songwriter Vasi Vallis dedicated himself to solo project Reaper. The sound of his new band is completely different from that of NamNamBulu: while the former produced great synth pop, Reaper produces catchy, dance floor-friendly electro/EBM. The group’s first EP, Angst, was extremely well-reviewed, stayed in the German Alternative Charts for eight weeks, reached #5 in the Dutch Alternative Charts, and was chosen for the Top 10 of 2006 in Virus Magazine. Here, the amazing songwriting skills of Vasi Vallis are supported by guest vocals by Mark Jackson (VNV Nation) and John van Roy (Suicide Commando).

Andrew Russo: piano

2007 Grammy nominee Andrew Russo rides his supercharged piano into the twenty-first century with fourteen dirty little secrets packed with verve and humor, crankiness and delight, sweat and sarcasm, attitude and acrobatics, power and peril, joy and turbulence, punch and grace—fourteen short masterworks by twelve of today’s most relevant composers! A number of classical albums feature recitals of short ‘encore’ piano pieces, mostly nineteenth-century trifles. Dirty Little Secret has a similar structure—that is, it is a piano album with many short tracks. However, it reflects both a repertoire and attitude that belong to this century of sound bites, downloads, and the cynical sarcasm of Generation X. A versatile, prolific artist both onstage and in the recording studio, American pianist Andrew Russo has made a name for himself through his work with many of today’s leading composers in the US and Europe. As a recitalist, Russo’s programs frequently feature premieres. Trained classically at the Juilliard School and the Hochschule fur Musik und Theater Mendelssohn in Leipzig, he pursued further specialized training in Paris with Frederic Chiu. In addition to his extensive solo activities, Russo is a member of the piano/cello/percussion trio Real Quiet, a group much involved in commissioning new music.

Press Quotes “A pianist who knows no limits.” — London Times “Andrew Russo is by no means just ‘another pianist.’” — Gramophone

Selling Points • Fourteen short piano masterworks by twelve of today’s most relevant composers. • Russo was a 2007 Grammy nominee for his Black Box recording of the music of popular American composer John Corigliano. • He was the first pianist to play inside the piano (plucking the strings) at the Van Cliburn competition when he performed a work by George Crumb there in 2001.

Overview

Spicchiology? is the sophomore release from supergroup XXL, comprising all members of mutated pop project Xiu Xiu and Italian experimental cult band Larsen. Recorded in late 2006 in Torino, Spicchiology? is the result of a profoundly creative friendship that spans the globe, translated into music. “If the last XXL record was romantic and fun, this one is broken and superior. Look at yourself! Your mattress is embarrassed that you give it a job. The Farfisa is a real one, not a sampler. HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!” — James Stewart

Press Quotes “An impossibly natural handshake between the two groups. Glockenspiel, synth, accordion, and theremin all remind you that Xiu Xiu are present, but their usual glaring, forward sound is burnished by a gentle Mediterranean pace.” — The Stranger “Xiu Xiu and Larsen slip into a methodical mind-meld, shuffling melodies and countermelodies toward their logical conclusions.” — Pitchfork “An unholy alliance between the Italian experimental band Larsen and James Stewart’s weirdo pop band Xiu Xiu.” — All Music Guide “Whoa, you won’t be mistaking this CD for a super size t-shirt! No, this is a collaboration between Xiu Xiu and Larsen! An intriguing combination? That’s putting it mildly. Think, the aural equivalent of a darkening storm cloud billowing forth with flashes of fork lightning, thunderous crashes and rumbles … Here’s hoping these two groups get together more often!” — Aquarius Records

Piano Magic Part Monster Genre: Alt Rock Label: Important Records CD: IPT 151 Price Code: P

Featured Artists Franck Alba: guitars Glen Johnson: vocals, guitars Cedric Pin: keyboards Alasdair Steer: bass Jerome Tcherneyan: drums, percussion, bass, thumb piano

Overview

Part Monster, Piano Magic’s seventh “proper” album, easily lives up to its title. Though Piano Magic is generally tarred with the brushes of “ambient,” “coldwave,” or even “ghost rock,” Part Monster has its fill of all-out, near-brutal dynamic intensity. Indeed, anyone who’s witnessed PM live over the past two years will testify that the shadowy introspection of the group’s records is camouflage for a beast of many teeth. Bringing in Guy Fixsen of Laika as producer clearly marked the band’s intention for a more raw, powerful sound, as Fixsen has taken the production and/or engineer chair for such luminaries as The Pixies, Moonshake, The Breeders, Joy Zipper, Stereolab, Lush, and most notably, My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless. That’s not to say that Piano Magic has entirely turned the amps up to eleven. Part Monster gracefully balances cathartic noise with romantic paeans to the band’s favorite subject—the cruel, tragic side of London and the city’s most graceful outcast, Joseph Carey Merrick (The Elephant Man). In its tenth year of existence, Piano Magic can look back on a varied and accomplished discography most bands wouldn’t manage in a lifetime of trying. Records for 4AD, Darla, Morr Music, Important, and many more mark the band’s way, in addition to the soundtrack to Bigas Luna’s Son De Mar (2001) and performances at some of the biggest festivals in Europe (Benicassim, Primavera, BAM).

Press Quotes “A band confident with seemingly limitless quality craftsmanship and recurrent reinvention.” — Delusions of Adequacy “Stealthy witching hour atmospherics are utterly overwhelming.” — Uncut “Splendidly ethereal.” — Brainwashed

Selling Points • First album in two years from this “cult” group celebrating its tenth year of existence. • Cathartic, romantic, dynamic album will appeal to fans of Radiohead, The Smiths, Joy Division, 4AD, and Factory Records. • Produced by Guy Fixsen of the band Laika (My Bloody Valentine, The Pixies). • Features guest appearances by Angèle David-Guillou of KLIMA, Simon Rivers of Vic Godard collaborators The Bitter Springs, and Terry Edwards, who has appeared on records by everyone from Nick Cave to Spiritualized. • Full press mailing by Important Records. • Ads in The Wire, Pitchfork, Magnet, and Big Takeover. • NOT EXPORTABLE OUTSIDE NORTH AMERICA!

Overview “God bless you AMT.” — Pitchfork Brand new full-length album from Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O. features the recent addition of female vocalist Kitagawa Hao. Recorded over a period of four months at The Acid Mothers Temple, this is a very clean-sounding and polished AMT. Frontman Kawabata Makoto admitted, only half joking, that this has the “cleanest sound in AMT history!” More controlled than many of their speaker-destroying, fuzz-blasted speed-guru jams, Crystal Rainbow Pyramid is focused on mystic ambient passages leading into Makoto’s head-heavy echo-riffs. Crystal Rainbow Pyramid is clearly one of the new classic AMT recordings. Prepare to have your mind blown slowly with evolving heavyweight jams and climactic peaks of exquisite ecstasy. Inspired by Popol Vuh and originally released in a tiny pressing of 550 on vinyl from the inimitable Acid Mothers Temple frontman. Guitarist, multi-instrumentalist, composer, and leader of Acid Mothers Temple, Kawabata Makoto expresses all his mantric cosmical vocations and spins them into space sonorities! He took inspiration from the Popol Vuh album Hosianna Mantra during his visit to A Silent Place headquarters in late Winter 2006. A few days later, back in Japan, Makoto recorded the Hosanna Mantra album at the Acid Mothers Temple between March 12th and 13th using electric guitar, bouzouki, and sitar. The result is this new fantastic sound coming from the cosmos, a simple gem of crystalline beauty. Licensed from A Silent Place.

Overview “Nadja, a long time AQ fave who traffic in SUNN O)))-like dirge, manage to infuse their glacial soundscapes with surprising warmth as well as all sorts of unlikely glisten and shimmer. Teamed up with Fear Falls Burning, who recently gave us a super limited LP called The Amplifier Drone, which was, as the title suggests, a disc of amp drone and rumble, distorted guitar smeared into dark ambient whir. So what happens when the two team up? Hard to explain exactly. It’s definitely dark and dirgey and droney. But it’s also soft, focused and moody, dreamy and dense, with strange melodies and drifting percussive elements hovering below the downtuned trudge.” –— Aquarius Records On their first full-length collaboration CD, Fear Falls Burning and Nadja display their willful approach to drones with four epic songs full of sustain, pulses, and dynamics. Grand in theme, sound, and atmosphere, this album draws inspiration from the critically acclaimed Conspiracy Records LP while pushing the boundaries of the bands’ sound as separate entities.

Overview “Je Suis France has managed a rousing debut, ranging from sloppy/grand guitar gestures to kinetic, indie-pop funk.” — Magnet Athens-based band Je Suis France perfectly embodies the town’s reputation for whimsical yet adventurous indie rock experimentation. The group’s only agenda is to bring the jammz in as many ways as possible, and to that end it plays a constantly evolving stream of psychedelic rock drawing on influences like Gong, Superchunk, Outkast, and Spaceman 3. Je Suis France’s third full-length, Afrikan Majik, tips its hat to the mighty Krautrock but doesn’t stop there. Balancing slowly building jams with shorter bursts of melodic aggression, JSF takes listeners on a guideless tour of normally pretentious rock sub-genres like prog, fuzz pop, psychedelic, and even techno.

Overview “2005’s Best Noise Pop Discovery. Kids, here is the group you’ve been waiting for.” — SF Weekly San Francisco-based supergroup Still Flyin’ was assembled in late 2004 by Sean Rawls. What began as a lighthearted nod to good times soon became a juggernaut that no one in the band expected, and before long the group had become a San Francisco phenomenon. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that the band counts members of Track Star, Aislers Set, Ladybug Transistor, Love Is All, Maserati, and Red Pony Clock amongst it’s rotating collective. Goodbye East, Goodbye West documents the refinement and growth of Madagascar’s unique sound. Each track uses crisscrossing accordion, saw, and glockenspiel melodies—anchored by bass, acoustic guitar, and percussion. Overview “Pounding, fuzzy, unpredictable noise rock.” — Copper Press Detroit’s freak-wave outfit Child Bite meets up with our favorite easy listening noise-rockers Stationary Odyssey for a lesson in Phys Ed. The split EP, aptly titled Physical Education, contains two songs from each of the aforementioned bands, with music ranging from post-rocky Slint-ish ballads to horn section no-wave freak outs. Child Bite’s music combines punk vigor with avant-garde ideals, infusing unconventional sounds with palatable arrangements for an end product that Paper Thin Walls describes as “Devo or Talking Heads going no-wave.” Stationary Odyssey has achieved critical acclaim for its unique, unpredictable blend of noise-rock. However, unlike the band’s previous efforts, this EP contains vocals and lyrics, channeling a Faith No More/Ween component. The revolving lineup now includes vocalist Mike Farmer, a.k.a. Kentucky Prophet, a.k.a. the “Music Geek” from Comedy Central’s Beat the Geeks.

Selling Points • Limited edition release of 400 hand-numbered retail copies. • Special circular tin packaging will fit in standard CD racks while still jumping out to buyers from among the jewel cases. • Stationary Odyssey vocalist Mike Farmer just finished a national tour with his good friend Frank Black of The Pixies. • Massive press campaign by Joyful Noise; e-media by Fanatic Promotion. • Radio campaign by Suburban Sprawl with service to top college stations. • Ads in Copper Press,Verbicide, Modern Fix, Magnet, Nuvo, and more.

Overview “Better riffs for better days.” If there’s a driving force behind Hackman, it’s that simple statement. Guitarist and occasional vocalist Darryl Sheppard’s resume touches just about every great local band. To name them all would take days, so we’ll give you just the big ones: Roadsaw and Milligram. The former was one of the few bands of the early “stoner rock” revolution to deftly pick up where Kyuss left off, and the latter’s metal-meets-punk-meets-hardcore assault was so incendiary that it’s no surprise they burnt out after the classic This Is Class War. Bassist Jase Forney and drummer Todd Bowman lived fast in the died-too-young Lamont, the undisputed kings of Motörhead-inspired shitkicker boogie metal. Together, the three crank out the sort of crushing riffs that make you realize that what you previously thought was good was just okay. Tracks like “Chin Music” and “The Anthem” manage to come straight at you even though the music is decidedly left of center, and the end result twists your brain while you bang your head. Though the band has only been together since 2005, Hackman Hackman is rapidly showing more established local bands how it’s supposed to be done. With debut The New The New Normal Normal (produced by Marc Schleicher of Antler/Quintaine Americana/Cracktorch fame), the Genre: Rock/Stoner rest of the world will learn the same lesson. All you need in this life are better riffs for better days. Label: Small Stone Records CD: SSO 73 Selling Points Price Code: P • Features members of Milligram, Roadsaw, and Lamont. • Produced by Marc Scleicher of Antler, Quintaine Americana, and Cracktorch. • Hackman will tour the US later this year, with an appearance at SXSW 2007. Overview “Good bittersweet pop … the melodies roll out like chocolate, charming and smooth.” — Chicago Reader Aniseed is the fourth full-length from Chicago’s The Atari Star. Half the tracks are sunny, upbeat, indiepop rockers and the other half are lush, acoustic numbers adorned with Hammond B-3, bassoon, and cello. This time around, Marc Ruvolo’s bittersweet vocals and intelligent lyrical themes are abetted by classically trained vocalist Dana Hammett and guitarist Casey Olin (Das Kapital). Additional arrangements and instrumentation supplied by Michael Perkins (Sig Transit Gloria, Far Rad).

The Decemberists on vinyl—re-pressed in deluxe 180–gram audiophile editions! Overview “The Decemberists stick to the same kind of heavy acoustic folk-rock and freakish lyrical balladry that fueled Neutral Milk Hotel’s rise to power. Fortunately, their music also possesses enough unique twists to distinguish it from simple mimicry. The most obvious is the band’s often baroque instrumentation, which generally makes for more elaborate arrangements than those of their stylistic forbearer. Hammond organ and subtle theremin flesh out the mix, each adding an anachronistic spin on the otherwise quaint jangle of strings and guitars hearkening to some dusty, distant past.” — Pitchfork [8.1]

The Decemberists Castaways and Cutouts Genre: Alt Rock Label: Jealous Butcher LP: JLO 52 Price Code: O NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA

As its title would suggest, Castaways and Cutouts is a record populated with an eclectic array of unlikely characters in various states of abandonment and revelry. While the likes of Spanish gypsies, infant specters, and Turkish prostitutes are not common elements in modern pop music, these figures find ample footing within the songcraft of Colin Meloy, supported comfortably by the band’s lush and orchestral instrumentation. Recorded over a two-month period in a warehouse in Portland’s Industrial Southeast, the record swims gracefully between heart-rending, deftly arranged pop and scrappy off-the-cuff dirge

Selling Points • Has already sold over 3,000 copies. • Re-pressed on 180-gram virgin vinyl with full-color inner sleeve (and stickered to indicate this). • Re-mastered specifically for LP by John Golden.

Overview “On [Her Majesty], the whimsy and multicolored narrative threads that represented the best of the Decemberists’ terrific first album are given room to breathe.” — Magnet For all intents and purposes, Her Majesty is best described as the charming older brother to the band’s previous outing. And, while being recognizably related to its sibling, it is an altogether different beast. Present and accounted for are the Victorian literary tropes, the rakish mariners, and the Dickensian downtrodden that slouched their way across the laser imprinted surface of Castaways and Cutouts. But on Her Majesty, a new cast of characters is introduced, giving further depth to the richly bizarre songcraft of the band’s bespectacled leading player, Colin Meloy: an aristocratic Jewess slumming it blindfolded among the exotic avenues of a Chinese bazaar, the coifed and coked-up bon vivants of greater Los Angeles, the writer Myla Goldberg, and a The Decemberists pair of affectionate soldiers celebrating their camaraderie among the mortar blasts and trench mud of WWI Her Majesty, The Belgium. Musically, the band travels over new territory as well, mining deeper into their Beatle-pop influences Decemberists Genre: Alt Rock to create a record that is as lush as it is intricate. Overview “With all the amazing, innovative places music has gone in the past ten years, it still holds fast that there’s nothing quite like a truly talented singer/songwriter … Never wavering in quality, The Decemberists’ folkinfluenced pop is brainy, charming, and sincere.” — Devil in the Woods

5 Songs is the essential springtime mix. Dispensing with the occasional delightfully macabre narratives of Castaways and Cutouts, 5 Songs collects the feel good’ns. The centerpiece may be Colin Meloy’s tallest tale set to music yet: “My Mother Was a Chinese Trapeze Artist” is a fantastic autobiography with the kind of detail and flight of fancy that you would expect from film director Wes Anderson (The Royal Tenenbaums). The songs are bright, buoyant, and devastatingly pop. As interpreted by Meloy and Co., The Tain is a single eighteenminute song composed of five movements. The Decemberists tell an abstract, impressionist version of The Tain’s events: a tale of bad people doing bad things, flawed heroes, blood, guts, war, adultery, cattle—all of the things that would corrupt today’s youth if they heard word of it.
