Can you sell over a quarter of a million records and still be called “underground”? Living Legends probably don’t care what you call them, as long as you keep calling, and they’re confident you will. With ten individual members and multiple groups within the group, calling them prolific would be an understatement. The core crewmembers are Murs, The Grouch, Eligh, Luckyiam, Scarub, Bicasso, Sunspot Jonz, Aesop the Black Wolf, and Arata. Heading out in July on the appropriately named Paid Dues tour (co-founded by Legends breakout success story Murs), they’ll join fellow indie hip-hop luminaries Felt (Murs with Slug & Ant from Atmosphere), Brother Ali, Cage, Mr. Lif, and others. In July, the Paid Dues tour will meet up three times with the monumental Rock the Bells phenomenon. These shows will undoubtedly be some of the biggest hip-hop events ever assembled, boasting a lineup that includes Rage Against the Machine, Wu-Tang Clan, Cypress Hill, The Roots, Nas, Mos Def, Public Enemy, MF Doom, Blackalicious, and plenty more. These three events will take place at Randall’s Island (NYC), PacBell Park (SF), and NOS Events Center (San Bernardino). Hundreds of thousands of people will be exposed to the Living Legends, in person, this summer!

Amazing Living Legends crew album! This is one album that truly lives up to its name, and exceeds expectations! Most of the album was recorded in February 2004 when the eight Living Legends were all staying together in a house on Maui for a month. That was the first time in recent memory all eight members were together with the purpose of recording a new project, and what came out of those sessions is definitely their strongest material yet. The cover photo shows all eight LL members. Production by Madlib, Eligh, Grouch, Sunspot, DJ Khalil, Kruse, DJ Epik, and Bean One.

Living Legends Creative Differences

“A throwback to the first golden age of classic hip-hop albums: early De La Soul’s pop culture giggles, Digital Underground’s playful rudeness, A Tribe Called Quest’s cross-cultural fearlessness, Public Enemy’s sonic fingerprints and the no-rules aesthetic of the Wu-Tang Clan are all touched upon at different points in this sprawling masterwork … Topics range from the goofily scatological … to the pointedly political.” — All Music Guide

Recorded between the years of 1995 and 1998, this music represents a moment in time when all of the Legends lived under one roof in the Outhouse Village with one bathroom and four studios. Untamed bass, tape hiss, young voices, and years of flavor—all on one disc! Enjoy this chapter of Living Legends music history. Track 1 produced by Elusive. Tracks 2-8, 10, 11,14 & 16 produced by The Grouch. Tracks 9 & 12 produced by Sunspot. Tracks 13 &15 produced by Eligh.

Nail welcomes LEGENDARY MUSIC to its roster Without a real label structure outside of their own much-lauded, do-ityourself energy, Legendary Music has been fielding worldwide requests for more of the Living Legends’ music without reprieve since the early 1990s. Now, Legendary Music comes to NAIL via Cornerstone RAS! The Living Legends crew is a family of independent hip-hop creators bringing a raw, unique sound and an unfiltered glimpse into the members’ daily lives. It is this personal connection with the audience that has caused their loyal fan base to extend around the world, and it is their talent as emcees and producers that has garnered them the respect of their peers. It all started with BFAP (now known as Sunspot Jonz) and PSC (Luckyiam), who laid claim to the name of Mystik Journeymen in the early 1990s. By ’94 they were local legends for throwing Underground Survivors shows, house-party style. That’s where The Grouch hooked up with the Journeymen in 1995, just before they took off on their renowned first European tour. In 1999 the Legends shifted their center of gravity to Los Angeles, but their presence has definitely not diminished in Oakland and the Bay. You know it makes no difference where they stay, because the universe revolves around them anyway! Now in 2007, Legendary Music’s catalog has grown substantially, including releases from not only the Living Legends but also solo albums from the Mystik Journeymen, Luckyiam.PSC, and Scarub.

Brooke Gallupe: guitar, vocals/Kathryn Calder: keyboards, vocals/Luke Kozlowski: drums, vocals/Owen Pallett, Michael Olson: strings/Alex Kapranos, The Cribs, Caitlin Callupe, Leslie Rewaga: backing vocals/John Collins: percussion, synthesizer/Olivia Meek: musical saw

Recorded at JC/DC Studios by Dave Carswell and John Collins, with Colin Stewart handling additional recording and mixing at Gallupe Manor and Vogville Studios, Fables shows another dimension of the Immaculate Machine sound. Warm reverb envelops the songs, capturing the feel of classic ’60s recordings—a time when the source of the sound and the feel of the room exceeded the desire for the unnecessary overdubbing of so many of today’s recordings. These dulcet sounds represent Immaculate Machine at its best: intimate, personal, and urgent compositions with a focus on the interplay between a tightly knit trio of close friends. The members are adept at reading the next move within a song, creating subtle dynamics that are so rewardingly apparent to the listener. Features string arrangements by Owen Pallett (Final Fantasy, Arcade Fire) as well as special guest vocals by UK group The Cribs and Franz Ferdinand’s Alex Kapranos.

Press Quotes “The songs sound like the best of retro Canadian new wave.” — Bay Area Reporter “Together for a scant three years,Victoria indie trio Immaculate Machine sounds remarkably cohesive and fearlessly energetic on their Mint debut. With guitarist Brooke Gallupe and drummer Luke Kozlowski switching off vocal duties with able-voiced keyboardist Kathryn Calder, the he said/she said dynamic makes for a charming listen.” — Eye Weekly “Together they create dense layers of sound, three-part harmonies, and hooks where Calder’s voice rings like a bell aimed at the heart.” — Bitch

Selling Points • Features Kathryn Calder of The New Pornographers. • String arrangements by Owen Pallett of Final Fantasy and Arcade Fire. • Special guest vocals by The Cribs and Franz Ferdinand’s Alex Kapranos. • US, Canadian, and European tours. • US college radio promotion by Pirate Promotion. A TRIPLE RE-RELEASE OF SOME MINT RECORDS CLASSICS Overview “Come Out Come Out is Cub’s masterpiece, transcending the cutesy limitations of cuddlecore to create music of genuine originality and meaning. Each of the eleven original tracks here is an absolute gem, buoyed by Ramones-like abandon but anchored by an ever-expanding melodic sophistication and lyrical depth … cuddlecore’s finest hour.” — All Music Guide One of Mint Records’ top five sellers to date! The label is happy to reissue cuddlecore pioneers Cub’s sophomore effort Come Out Come Out, presented in a re-mastered format. Featuring the songs “New York City” and “Flaming Red Bobsled,” 1995’s Come Out Come Out presented the amazing growth of Cub as a band, with bassist Lisa Marr, guitarist Robynn Iwata, and Lisa G on drums. This album proved to be the fantastic pop creation that made Cub a mainstay on the independent music scene.

Overview Featuring Neko Case on vocals and drums! Mint Records is happy to reissue this well-trained cow-punk trio’s hard-hitting garage sounds. Released in 1996, The Unforgiving Sounds of Maow is full of highlights, such as Neko Case belting out some Wanda Jackson and Nancy Sinatra numbers while spanking the cans in full Levon Helm style. Sounding kind of like Nancy Sinatra going out drinking with The Cramps, Maow references brazen, raunchy garage and rock ‘n’ roll in the tradition of The Trashwomen and The Shitbirds!

Like an infectious musical sewing circle, The Choir Practice grew and grew, secretly creating rich harmonies and conventional pop arrangements with a choral delivery until their first official show: opening for the always eccentric Antony & The Johnsons. Mint Records is very proud to introduce the debut from this ensemble, a featured act at the last two Mint Records Ridiculously Early Christmas Parties and runners up in Shindig!, the Vancouver indie rock battle of the bands. Choirmaster Coco Culbertson is no stranger to the Vancouver music scene (The Gay, A.C. Newman, The Tennessee Twin). Acknowledging the need for musical camaraderie, she recruited new and old friends including Larissa Loyva (P:ano, Kellarissa), Naomi Mepham, Olivia Fetherstonhaugh (Fanshaw), Jenn Chycoski (Pokiok Falls), classical music enthusiast Kristen Halliday, Chris Kelly (Gay Straights), Shane Turner (Love and Mathematics), DJ Scotty “Ska-T” Stewart, photographic sensation Karin Bubas, filmmaker Shira Blustein (Blood Meridian), Ida Nilsen (Great Aunt Ida, The Buttless Chaps), outsider artist/musician Sydney Vermont (Hello Blue Roses), florist Marcy Emery (Heartbreak Scene), and Kurt Dahle (The New Pornographers, The Basement). The resulting debut from this ever-expanding indie rock choir recalls the beautiful harmonies of ’60s psych-folk sensations The Free Design combined with the unique song presentation of The Langley Schools Music Project.

Selling Points • Features Coco Culbertson (The Gay), Larrissa Loyva (P:ano), and Ida Nilsen (Great Aunt Ida, Buttless Chaps). • Produced by New Pornographers drummer Kurt Dahle; mastered by Peter Moore. • National press & college radio promotion. • Ads in Pitchfork, Bust, Big Takeover, and more.

Jeremiah Green: drums, guitar, amps, vocals Adam Howrey: bass Tristan Marcum: vocals, organ, temple piano, guitar Tony Palmasani: guitar Tom Peloso: fiddle Mary Thinnes: piano, vibraphone, synth, vocals Darrin Wiener: Moog, dust

What hits you first about this band is that it includes Modest Mouse drummer Jeremiah Green. Add singer/songwriter Tristan Marcum, and your ears will surely want to welcome Integretron. Vells formed back in 2002 with classical pianist Mary Thinnes and bassist Adam Howrey (Fruit Bats, Helvatia). This album also features the talents of Red Stars Theory’s ultra-melodic guitarist Tony Palmasani and fiddle magic from fellow Modest Mouse member Tom Peloso. The sheer amount of musical texture on Integretron is matched by Marcum’s lyrical detail and suave flow, melded with Vells’ signature celestial harmonies to create a surreal, dreamlike masterpiece. The band’s style is reminiscent of the modern straightforwardness of friends (and fans) The Shins, combined with the psychedelic sonic characteristics of The Beatles and infused with innovative new sounds similar to The Knife. The result is a dazzling collection of spun-sugar songs that woo listeners with a gleeful brand of apocalyptic pop.

Press Quotes “Featuring members of Modest Mouse, Red Stars Theory, and Stagger Lee, Vells follows up their brilliant Flight From Echo Falls LP with this excellent album reminiscent of The Shins on steroids.” — Don Yates, KEXP “Tristan Marcum’s ether-worldly rising harmonies conspire with shiny melodies and steadily bouncing meters to craft perfectly visceral pop songs.” — Pitchfork “File under: magical realism for urban cynics. Vells’ unicorn pop is catchier than any disease indigenous to the land of make-believe … Tristan Marcum’s dream-weaving tones are haltingly beautiful.” — Seattle Weekly “Put Tristan Marcum and Jeremiah Green (yes, that Jeremiah Green) in a studio and you get gold, friend, gold. Gold stamped gold, even.” — Bandoppler [9.5]

Selling Points • Features Jeremiah Green and Tom Peloso of Modest Mouse. • First album, Flight From Echo Falls, charted high on college radio. • Named Best Artist in Seattle by Seattle Weekly and The Stranger. • Artwork by Brazilian designer Nando Costa. • Recorded, mixed, and produced by Darrin Wiener (Plastiq Phantom), who assists Modest Mouse both live and in the studio. • Massive mailing/promotion to college radio, magazines, and websites.

Overview

Andrew Weatherall: vocals, keyboards Keith Tenniswood: guitar, bass Nick Burton: drums Sophie Braithwaite, Nina Walsh: backing vocals

Following on from the success of their last album, From the Double Gone Chapel, Two Lone Swordsmen return and the evolution of their sound continues. Generally credited with inventing indie dance through his work with Primal Scream, Flowered Up, and My Bloody Valentine, Andrew Weatherall pioneered the crossover between big electronic beats and equally big guitar chords—and his fondness for good old-fashioned rock ‘n’ roll is celebrated on this release. Featuring elements of garage and rockabilly, but also the more familiar layer of electronica, Wrong Meeting II moves in a new direction. What is particularly striking about this album is Weatherall’s growth in stature—not only as a singer and frontman, but also as a sharp wordsmith. Here, we find tales of love and rejection that rip open a seething underbelly of mistrust, tension, revenge, and redemption. Wrong Meeting II wears its influences on its sleeve while still sounding utterly contemporary. Once again, Two Lone Swordsmen have created an album that pushes the boundaries between musical genres and remains challenging to the listener.

Press Quotes “There is a staggeringly high level of quality that infests just about everything Two Lone Swordsmen touch.” — Pitchfork “Superb, attitude-heavy tracks driven along by rattling drums, fine percussion, and Joy Division bass lines showcase Weatherall’s excellent voice and first-class lyrics.” — Mojo “Raw scuzz-rock that sounds like PiL remixing The Birthday Party.” — DJ Magazine “That wonky charm, which Wrong Meeting II has in abundance, is a strong balance between lo-fi rhythms, beautifully real and organic groove drums, and moody bass lines. On top are addictive vocal lines as sinister as they are simple.” — Music-News.com (UK)

Selling Points • The newest album from legendary artists/producers Andrew Weatherall and Keith Tenniswood (a.k.a. Radioactive Man). • Will appeal to fans of electronica and guitar-based music.

Recorded in two weeks during April 2004 at Seattle’s Avast! Recording Co. Co-produced by Luke Temple and Troy Tietjen (The Shins, Death Cab for Cutie.) “Deceptively simple, with Simon and Garfunkel-style melodies, and Temple’s sleepy vocals belie a melancholy just beneath the surface … enough understated soul to give Conor Oberst a run for his money.” — Rolling Stone

Luke Temple’s self-titled EP was the first sneak peek into Hold a Match for a Gasoline World. Recorded with Burke Sampson (guitar), Robert Stillman (keys, horns), and drummer Matt Chamberlain (David Bowie, Elvis Costello, Fiona Apple), this four-song collection is a wonderful way to get acquainted with Temple’s music and should serve as a fine introduction. “One of the prettiest voices in all of indie rock, hands down.” — Ben Gibbard.

Flying’s debut full-length on Mill Pond. Old accordions, broken pianos, buzzing guitars, and thickets of drum claps mingle with harsh trills and murky creaks. Eggshell is a search-and-discovery mission, a set of narratives balanced between song & sound, and a testament of anxiety and hope, a dense and fantastic adventure. Based out of Brooklyn, Flying have played with Deerhoof, Tunnel of Love, The USA is a Monster, Dirty Projectors, and Lavender Diamond. “Found instruments and incidental noises give each song a warm depth.” — CMJ

A collection of songs by instrumentalist/composer Robert Stillman that uses an eclectic sonic palette consisting of saxophones, clarinets, old pianos, pump organs, and drums to create short musical narratives that exist on their own, but also work together to create a vivid, self-contained world echoing the composer’s interest in all things mysterious. “Robert Stillman moves warily and wittily, more or less doing away with the mainstream jazz harmony of the 1960s.” — New York Times

The first album since 2000’s well-received EP on Made In Mexico is a long-awaited collection of tender and trippy soft rock stylings, shaded with a reverence for the music of the ’60s and ’70s via influences like Gram Parson, The Beatles, Beachwood Sparks, pre-disco Bee Gees and the Cosmic Rough Riders. “The gentle, gliding tones on the album’s ’60s-tinged songs are effortlessly enjoyable and pretty enough to soundtrack cinematic daydreams.” — The Stranger

Teeming Portland-based musical clan Blitzen Trapper is pleased to announce the arrival of its third brood of offspring—songs, that is—in the shape of an album called Wild Mountain Nation. Brought forth in a spasm of creative mania, Nation is rough-hewn but lush, crackling (sometimes audibly) with a weird and lucid energy. From outer space to down on the farm, campfire sing-along to atonal dystopia, the new album is a raucous constellation of favorite souvenirs from the Trapper’s gamut-running musical adventures. As usual, the group’s trusty fourtrack was used to capture the “souls” of the songs, which were then buried in a rich soil of sweat and love so that in due time a delicious, varied harvest of fresh music was drooping from the vine. Taste it—it’s good! A sextet of old friends whose youths were spent wandering the hoary forests and high desert plateau of the Pacific Northwest, Blitzen Trapper has long been a stalwart of the Portland music community, rocking audiences of all ages, socioeconomic groups, and species with its unique sonic blend of Zane Grey, Darjeeling tea, candy wrappers, and Choose Your Own Adventure. Though you may mistake the members for can collectors or immigrant day laborers, the group loves you very much and promises to slave away at the office to keep Wild Mountain Nation and the other kids well fed and tastefully attired.

Press Quotes “Remember Beck before his career devolved into magazine-pleasing genre exercises? These guys have the same bent, rustic perspective on popcraft, and a heap of ambition.” — Pitchfork “A chewy mash-up of groovy, Syd Barrett-y quirkiness and Elephant Six-style songsmithing … strangely, lucidly polished.” — CMJ “A dense but playful collage of indie rock, folk, and junkyard aesthetic electronic music. It’s messy and loose and joyful and full of shouts and lo-fi drums.” — Skyscraper

ALSO AVAILABLE FROM BLITZEN TRAPPER! Overview “Combining ’60s country-rock with cartoonish psychedelia and hyperactive thrash, the group’s selftitled debut is two parts hook-laden pop and one part pure acid freakout.” — Willamette Week The first Blitzen Trapper album had an initial limited release in late 2003, surprising local critics with its confident mix of musical styles and ambitious songwriting, and powering the group into the venerable Willamette Week’s Top 10 New Portland Bands of 2004. Chock-full of hooks and references to guns, the debut veers from stadium rock to Haight-Ashbury to dank lounge to trailer park rave-up to gas station balladry with devious glee. The only Blitzen Trapper work to have been recorded largely in a proper studio, the making of this album so ruined the band financially that the members were reduced to conditions of complete squalor for many years afterwards, out of which straits came the gloriously ramshackle follow-up, Field Rexx.

Selling Points • Previously hard-to-find debut. • Recorded and mixed with Gregg Williams (Sheryl Crow, Dandy Warhols). • New release (Wild Mountain Nation) is currently receiving a big media push. • National tour during Summer & Fall 2007.

Overview “Field Rexx is an earnest crack at bluegrass, country, and folk that’s young and brazen enough to incorporate elements from multiple genres … It simply (and successfully) aims a backporch countryfolk album for left-of-the-dial tastes.” — Pitchfork [7.0] A classic DIY release, Field Rexx was made in the sweltering summer of 2004 with no budget amidst the hiss of flies and tape. “Recorded,” according to the liner notes, “at the carny shack, fer shook n timsel on Duke’s shoot-o-matic for tisks & soda & that ol’ broke 4-track what 3-fingrd mike poured old English on and lit on fire,” Rexx’s warped eclectic pop Americana proves that great songs and performances can transcend squalor and bad album art. Rikkeh Suhtn: vocals, guitar Carmen X: vocals, bass

X27 is the rhythmic dream of Rikkeh Suhtn and Carmen X, two musicians obsessed with mixing pure, potent dance rock with gunky pop, a sound well embraced by both the incredibly miserable and incredibly blissful masses. Dark and menacing yet delightful and heavenly, X27 produces an alluring sound that will have every hip shifting and every heart oozing with caramel-laced dreams. Carmen X’s vocals surround her bass with a sexy, delectable sting while Rikkeh Suhtn delivers his melodically encrusted roar and guitar. The boy-girl vocals complement one another along the same lines as Exene Cervenka and John Doe of eighties punk rock band X. X27’s sophomore album, Antilove, was recorded in Chicago by the ingenious Steve Albini (The Pixies, Big Black, Nirvana, Shellac). The album’s punchy opening track, “Da Na Do,” establishes the fact that a rambunctious dance party is about to go down, while “Antilove” is a tune so thickened with honest emotion the band felt it should take the appropriate position as title track, summing up the entire album’s feel. Both songs showcase and embrace two completely separate sides of the rock ‘n’ roll spectrum.

Press Quotes “X27 plays hard, throbbing music with one intention: to shake the internal organs of humans.” — Agouti Music “This is what the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s would sound like if they were interested in seriously rocking the house instead of making the next fashion spread.” — Interpunk “The noisiest element that ever picked up an instrument.” — WNUR (Chicago) “Another Narnack trio (though an American one) that’s drenched in distortion while adding bad-natured luridness to its percussive roar. X27 features one member of the ’90s underground fixture Duotron, but more closely resembles gratifyingly savage Australian groups from the ’80s such as King Snake Roost and Feedtime.” — Time Out New York “Like Atari Teenage Riot meets Sonic Youth meets early Who.” — CMJ Bulletin

Selling Points • Produced by Steve Albini. • X27 have toured the US, UK, France, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy. • US tour in the works to revolve around the album’s release. • Ads in Spin, Harp, Magnet,The Onion, and various online blogs and music magazines.

Brian McTear: vocals, guitar Ric Menck: drums Mike Fleming: bass, backing vocals Brian Christinzio: piano, organ, glockenspiel Jesse Gallagher: organ, backing vocals Quentin Stoltzfus, Amy Morrissey, Sean Aylward, Mike Kennedy, Joey Sweeney: backing vocals

Noted indie producer and engineer Brian McTear (Matt Pond PA, Mazarin, Espers, Danielson, The A-Sides) returns with his third album as Bitter Bitter Weeks. While past albums were dark and minimal, Peace is vast, honest, assured, and dare we say, triumphant. It taps into McTear’s work with Mazarin, as well as subtle Eno-esque beds of organ & tape echo and the American jangle of ’80s college underground music. With Peace, Bitter Bitter Weeks has arrived in a new era, presenting an extraordinary album of fully orchestrated, memorable songs with featured guest performances by members of Mazarin, Apollo Sunshine, The A-Sides, BC Camplight, The Velvet Crush, and more. There are songs about life and death, mid-air daydreams, cold war apocalyptic fantasy, ghost dreams, hyperawareness in the last seconds of life, friendship gone sour, apologies to future generations, and much more.

Press Quotes “McTear delivers the tough news like a resilient troubadour heavily versed in singer-songwriters as diverse as Donovan and Sunny Day Real Estate’s Jeremy Enigk, and yet with enough personality to call the territory his own.” — RollingStone.com “Flashes of Paul Westerberg’s most sensitive moments mix with the irresistible commercial quality that allowed The Shins to cross over to a segment of the mainstream.” — Splendid “McTear’s austere arrangements foreground a voice that brings to mind Uncle Tupelo-era Jeff Tweedy, while guest musicians contribute pedal steel, harmonica, and a lovely vocal chorus on the last few tracks. Great music for big rooms or slow nights.” — Alternative Press “Dashes of Alex Chilton’s ragtag pop and Jonathan Richman’s childlike wonder give a warm glow to this boy-and-his-guitar bundle of agreeable, melodic, soft-pedaled laments.” — Uncut

Selling Points • First two albums (My Pal God Records, Southern Distribution) garnered much press attention and college radio airplay. • Fronted by Brian McTear, who has produced albums by Matt Pond PA, Mazarin, Espers, Danielson, The A-Sides, Hail Social, BC Camplight, and Spinto Band. • Features members of Mazarin, Apollo Sunshine, The A-Sides, BC Camplight, The Velvet Crush, Audible, and more. • Six-week national tour planned. • College and specialty radio campaign by Team Clermont. • Innovative internet promotion campaign by Philebrity. • Full press campaign by Tell All Your Friends PR (Art Brut, Yoko Ono, We Are Scientists). • Ads in Amplifier, Big Takeover, CMJ, Copper Press, Paste, Harp, Magnet, Pop Culture Press, Under the Radar, PopMatters, and more.

Matt McCormick: all instruments and programming

Oft-awarded filmmaker Matt McCormick has recently gathered together the music recordings he made for his films into a beautiful ambient collection called Very Stereo. McCormick loops, manipulates, edits, and duplicates stunning sounds into songs that are so striking that they make their own movies in the listener’s head. Using computer programming, sparse instrumentation, pedals, and keyboards, he creates intriguing soundtrack music that sounds as amazing accompanying his films as it does standing alone. Matt McCormick’s film work and accompanying soundtrack music have screened in film festivals, art museums, and micro-cinemas around the globe; appeared on MTV and the Sundance Channel; and received positive reviews from Art Forum, New York Times, and Film Comment. He has collaborated with many artists and musicians including The Shins, Miranda July, Sleater-Kinney, The Postal Service, and Calvin Johnson. He has had three films screen at the Sundance Film Festival, is the founder of Peripheral Produce (an internationally recognized video distribution label specializing in short experimental work), and is director of the Portland Documentary and eXperimental Film Festival, Portland’s premiere event for experimental, documentary, and otherwise obscure contemporary cinema.

Press Quotes “Mixing documentation of real graffiti removal practices by the city of Portland with theories that the removers are ‘collaborating’ with graffiti artists to create unconsciously-motivated collaborative works of art, Matt McCormick crafts an argument so elegant, with achingly beautiful cold-color visuals floating in a warm bath electronic score, that it’s hard not to be seduced.” — New York Press “McCormick’s The Subconscious Art of Graffiti Removal, a send-up of art criticism and urban planning, is a seemingly off-handed but exceptionally intelligent foray into American vernacular art.” — Village Voice “A constantly surprising filmmaker whose disarming, low-key films are steeped in a wicked sense of humor not always apparent on first viewings, McCormick’s importance as promoter, distributor, and programmer of experimental film over the past decade cannot be overemphasized.” — Res Magazine

Selling Points • Matt McCormick did the videos for Sleater-Kinney’s “Jumpers,” The Shins’ “The Past and Pending,” Scared of Chaka’s “All My Friends are Ghosts,” and TV spots for Jackpot Records. • Service to writers as well as college and nonprofit radio stations. • Ads in Resonance.

Overview

Lesli Wood: vox, guitar, piano Peg Wood: guitar Matt Menovcik: bass, bells Steph Hasselman: drums

Seattle’s favorite political band returns this summer with its highly anticipated third album, Shake Yourself Awake! Written over a span of two years in a highly divided political climate, Shake Yourself Awake offers a call to action with unapologetic energy and enthusiasm. During this time, Ms. Led has continued to tour, bringing its high-energy live show to the masses while sharing bills with The Avengers, The Thermals, The Reputation, and The Gossip. Ms. Led’s first two albums quickly sold out of their first pressings, and all the while the band maintained its DIY ethic and built a strong following. Shake Yourself Awake contains Lesli Wood’s strongest and most eclectic songwriting to date, varying from the punk energy of opening track “New Agenda” to the ’60s girl group stylings highlighted in “Up to the Old Tricks.” Shake Yourself Awake is Ms. Led at their best.

Press Quotes “Lesli Wood tackles subjects that, in the hands of a lesser musician, would turn into tired and sentimental clichés, but Ms. Led’s leader is a surprising success … an addictive listen from start to finish.” — Devil in the Woods “Driven by taut guitar lines, rhythms that propel dancing feet, and vocals that seethe with quiet intensity one moment, then suddenly ignite into barely controlled yowling the next.” — Time Out New York “With a sound that falls somewhere in between other NW female-fronted bands like Sleater-Kinney and Visqueen, Ms. Led are a power-pop four-piece with a strong but not heavy-handed feminist message and a straightforward punch … an energetic, inspired act with enough experience and stage presence to give their sincere songwriting a solid backbone.” — Seattle Weekly

Selling Points • Mixed and mastered by Grammy-winning producer Kramer. • Ms. Led’s last release was voted one of the Top Overall Albums of 2004 by KEXP listeners (charting higher than Le Tigre, Camera Obscura, and Beastie Boys), reached #8 in the Top Northwest Albums of 2004, and their track “Stigma” was voted one of the Best Local Singles of the Year by Seattle Weekly. • Multiple Seattle Weekly nominations for Best Garage Rock/Punk Band. • Recorded at Seattle’s legendary London Bridge Studio (Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains). • Canary Promotions hired for national publicity campaign with a focus on activist, queer, and women’s press. • National radio campaign with a focus on college stations. • Ads in Venus, Magnet, Filter,Time Out New York,The Advocate, and The Stranger.

Perrin Newell: guitar, vocals Valerie Aiello: guitar, vocals Oliver Newell: bass Sam DiGiovanni: drums

What happens when a band combines the abstract sounds of Sonic Youth with the earth-shattering, dynamic melodies of Smashing Pumpkins, and then mixes it with psychedelia and shoegaze? The Ghost Lullaby, a rock group from Los Angeles, which will crush you with guitar riffs, dreamy swirls of delay pedals, and drums that leave your ears and hearts bleeding. Residing in Silverlake, The Ghost Lullaby performs regularly at venues like Spaceland, The Scene, Knitting Factory, Bar 107, The Gig, King King, The Whiskey, and the Viper Room. This matchless group has shared the bill with everyone from Robin Guthrie (Cocteau Twins) to Broaddaylight. The Ghost Lullaby began promotion for Button Eyes in March 2007, making the journey to Austin during SXSW, and will continue to tour the US throughout the summer.

Press Quotes “Formed in Austin in 2003, it’s been a long road for The Ghost Lullaby. The band’s sound is dominated by a pair of blaring guitars and riffage that incorporates elements of classic metal, noise, and alternative rock … Once the band relocated to Los Angeles in 2004, they hooked up with drummer extraordinaire Sam DiGiovanni, who brought intricate, precise rhythms to solidify The Ghost Lullaby’s powerful sound.” — CitizineMag.com “Authentic … a really unified voice.” — KVRX (Austin)

Selling Points • During SXSW 2007, The Ghost Lullaby opened for The Viet Ming (Alex and Christian from The Black Angels) and played several shows and parties. • Tracked and engineered by Lars Stalfors (Mars Volta, Starlite Desperation). • Mastered by Pete Lyman (Mars Volta, Bloc Party, Lion Fever, Tsk Tsk). • Beautiful digipak with a unique, detailed UV coating. • Digital marketing campaign through various blogs; heavy MySpace promotion. • Service to college and city radio as well as magazines, websites, and promoters. • US tour dates starting in March 2007 will continue throughout the summer.

Overview

All the Way Out & All the Way In is a transcendent, energetic, and contemplative innovation of sounds in the world of futuristic soul music that collides with raw funk, space-age concepts, and gospel inspiration. Bearing no sophomoric misfortunes, The Soular System has struck pay dirt with their newest ten-track songbook of eclectic musical styles and conceptual lyrical treatises, evoking the beauty, madness, and scatological hilarity so often found in the band’s massive set list. The awe-inspiring unity of this band is what initially draws in its listeners. The tight-knit group exemplifies an interdependent spirit of collective oneness wholeheartedly, with all the members depending on each other’s important ingredients. Keyboardist and producer Danny Bedrosian (George Clinton/Parliament-Funkadelic keyboardist) brings his passionate, elusive, colorful values to the overall soundscape of the album, while also pulling longtime P-Funk member Cordell “Boogie” Mosson to the table on a guitar cameo. All the Way Out & All the Way In is a monster of an album, introducing the world to a band that has been a marvel in the Southeast for almost a decade.

Press Quotes “Need more funk in your system? The Soular System could be your fix … This band likes to bring the party and does not shy away from the challenge … Its live show has more of the energy and bombast of a punk rock outfit than a traditional funk act.” — The Spectator “Summer heated up even more when The Soular System played at Skipper’s Smokehouse in Tampa recently. On an already steamy night, this eight-piece band … jazzed the crowd with its unique blend of funk and rock ‘n’ roll that they brought with them from their home base in Tallahassee.” — Accent on Tampa Bay

Sugar & Gold takes classic harmony-based songwriting and yacht rock, then kicks them into the twenty-first century with a healthy dose of Rick James and Young Americans-era David Bowie. Like contemporaries Scissor Sisters and Phoenix, Sugar & Gold reaps the benefits of the last three decades in electronic and soul music, blending sampled beats, live drums, and an array of classic funk and electro instrumentation. With the little money they could scrape together, the members bought a van instead of a producer, toured the US, and ended up recording everywhere along the way. The result is Crème, their eleven-song debut, which reflects the moods and characters of neighborhoods across the country, and blends them all into a harmonious whole by finding a common denominator. In a country that has been continually polarized by politics and economics, S&G finds that music is still the language of the soul, and the greatest uniting force.

Selling Points • Phillip Minnig and Nicolas Dobbratz were formerly chief songwriters for Connexion and DuraDelinquent, who shared stages with the likes of White Stripes, BJM, BMRC, and have served as backing band for Neil Haggerty. • Mastered by JJ Golden. • Radio by AAM; national press promotion. • Ads in Arthur.

Overview “We haven’t heard much from Sweden’s Skull Defekts, but what we have heard we like. A lot. In fact, if there were any justice in the world, these guys would be battling Wolf Eyes for the hipster noise rock crown for sure. It’s not that these guys sound like Wolf Eyes, although they do a bit … it’s more that they are exploring the same territory, but without the goofy in-your-face vibe of Wolf Eyes, instead choosing to open up their sound a bit more, make it lighter, more abstract, and in the process a whole lot more compelling.” — Aquarius Records Blood Spirits & Drums Are Singing is The Skull Defekts’ first album recorded in a professional studio. It is also the group’s first release with an avant rock sound; previous releases included heavy sound experimentation, doom variations, and electronic noise. Blood Spirits, however, is all about the rhythm, the circle, the repetition, and the sound. Noise. Sweat. Funk. Sex. The Skull Defekts’ sound is a beast going for your brain, feet, and the place in between. Beware.

Overview

Spare Lead has been stirring the Northwest’s punk scene since 1997 with unique, original song organization and writing skills. The band started its career by releasing a number of self-produced CDs. In mid-2000, Spare Lead signed with New School Records, then released debut album Secluded in mid-2001. After its release, the members found themselves frequently touring the West Coast, sharing the stage with familiar acts such as Good Riddance, Death By Stereo, and The Casualties while achieving venue sales of over 2,500 units. Even though a number of years have passed, Spare Lead continues to tour regularly and write new music. In mid-2006, the band entered the studio to track its new masterpiece, Let’s Run Faster When We Have Lost Our Way. Now, Spare Lead is back with an exceptional new full-length, and this time around the members have stepped up their skills to a new level that will leave punk fans begging for more. Let’s Run Faster offers a unique blend of all punk genres, from hardcore to pop, with fast-melodic guitar riffs, technical drumbeats, and an original vocal style. This is a definite must for any fan of aggressive punk in the vein of Rise Against, Good Riddance, or Strike Anywhere.

Press Quotes “Bringing back the true spirit of punk rock with an all-out vengeance, Spare Lead has delivered an album that will not disappoint. The songs on the record are raw and brimming with passion and energy. Making the emo bands that call themselves punk look more like whiny-ass wimps in comparison, Spare Lead dare to get in your face with songs that make ya really wanna slam.” — Highwire Daze

This debut was created out of the ambition to unite modern electronic elements with club music and organic jazz to forge a unique sound and groove. STREET DATE 6.12.2007 Overview Much like Gershon Kingsley, Fred Katz has had one of the more extraordinary, if offbeat, careers in contemporary music. A vet of Army bands and Hollywood orchestras, plus sessions with Lena Horne and Carmen McRae, Katz made his biggest mark by bringing the cello to the forefront of the jazz repertoire. He did this best as a member of the Chico Hamilton Quintet, the ever-experimental ensemble that dropped Zen, a Pacific jazz gem of Katz compositions. Of course, he also did all the arranging for Harpo Marx’s Harpo in Hi-Fi LP, Ken Nordine’s classic Word Jazz project, the original score to Little Shop of Horrors, and the ever-popular Sidney Poitier Reads Plato record. He did an A&R stint at Decca before settling into a longtime academic gig as a must-take music professor. The most admired (if under-discussed) Katz album is probably this one, which is dedicated to the idea that all jazz is born from “the roots of people.” The roots explored here are folk songs—American, Hebrew, and African. “Baal Shem Tov” and “Rav’s Nigun” feature guest appearances by Paul Horn on sax and legendary LA jazzman Buddy Collette on flute. The tracks, from 1959, sound prophetic—an avant tackle of jazz and Jewish tradition.

The story of how Forty Marshas came to be is a classic example of putting the carriage before the horse. The end result, however, is a truly beautiful and creative album. Conceived by the Goo Goo Dolls’ Mike Malinin several years ago as nothing more than “a great name for a band,” Forty Marshas evolved into a true collaborative effort. In early 2007, Malinin gathered a collection of very talented friends and musicians at Los Angeles’s Swing House Studio. A week later—with friends like Death By Stereo’s Efrem Schulz, LA bass legend John Avila, Green Day sideman Jason Freese, and Goo Goo Dolls touring members Korel Tunador and Brad Frenquist—the self-titled debut release by Forty Marshas was complete, and is nothing shy of a musical tour de force. Featuring the indie rock anthem “Think Big” and a scorching cover of The Kinks’ “Sold Me Out,” this eclectic album covers a large part of the musical spectrum.

Press Quotes “Yet again, Mike Malinin has more then proved his prowess as a hard- grooving, straight-ahead, no-nonsense rock skinsman.” — Modern Drummer “Drummer Mike Malinin is determined to keep improving musically with each album.” — South Bend Tribune “Talent makes a great band.” — Drum Magazine

Overview Hot on the heels of the critically acclaimed 2006 split with Miracle of Birth, Brooklyn’s utterly insane Child Abuse returns to Lovepump United with its debut full-length! Recorded with Colin Marston of Dysrhythmia (Relapse Records) and Behold...The Arctopus (Metal Blade), the group’s self-titled debut is a glorious mess of fuzzy keyboards, tumbling rhythms, and dense, growling vocals that fall somewhere between Suffocation and Boredoms. Sinister art by renowned painter Albert Oehlen completes an album that is as brutal as it is catchy, and as rewarding as it is bizarre. Invite Child Abuse into your home!

Press Quotes “Child Abuse has a gift for conveying the giddy, volcanic rush of jazz losing its patience.” — Alarm “Child Abuse shrieks, albeit like a robot more than a human. You’ll hear the ominous screams rise and clot above the quirky din of fill-heavy drumming and keys like a giant talking head, only to dissolve and break apart as the rhythms continue to pulsate and bend around each other. No matter how hard you try to be ready for anything, a new band always steps out of the crowd and jams its boot down your throat hole.” — Skyscraper “Child Abuse’s thumping, keyboard-heavy out-punk blew my mind and left me in need of more psychological trauma.” — Free Williamsburg

Overview Black Magic Disco is a new all-star band featuring Tom Greenwood (Jackie-O Motherfucker), Maurizio & Roberto Opalio (My Cat Is An Alien), and Ramona Ponzini (Painting Petals On Planet Ghost, Praxinoscope). The project was born when Greenwood invited the Opalios and Ponzini to perform with him during two months of European touring in May/June 2005. As one can imagine, the result was killer. The music that came out of these live performances was totally explosive, combining Ponzini’s Japanese vocals and hypnotic chimes with Greenwood’s psych-blues guitar attitude and wild turntablism. This is all layered over MCIAA’s alien cosmic flux of electric guitars, space toys, and percussion to create a mixture of sounds unifying archaic & post-modern, Western & Eastern, and sky & earth. This debut represents a unique chance to experience almost eighty minutes of pure, magical live action, divided into four long tracks taken from the original live recordings.

Overview “Surprisingly gentle inflections combining low voices, ground-hugging mists of keyboards, genial electronic hucklebuck, and even acoustic guitar to create small vistas of delightful otherness.” — The Wire In Pink is the third ( r ) album. It took almost two years to finish, because Fabrizio Modonese Palumbo was very busy with Larsen and XXL, and because it came to life during troubled and sometimes painful times. Whereas previous album Under the Cables, Into the Wind was very warm and relaxed, In Pink is pretty extreme, swinging between joy and fear with introspective, moody songs and explosions of desperately optimistic energy. Still, it is more a diary than an exorcism, including Fabrizio Modonese Palumbo’s versions of an Irish traditional theme (which Johnny Cash interpreted on one of his American albums) and Joy Division’s classic “Atmosphere.” Features contributions from Paul Beauchamp (Blind Cave Salamander, Steve McKay Band), Ango (Mariae Nascenti), il Bue (Larsen), and the amazing Baby Dee.

Overview “Campbell’s music derives its essence from white light. Or, better yet, from an exploding star in some distant galaxy. Regardless of the source, Astral Social Club can only be described as pure bliss; ecstatic movement coupled with the pleasure of watching clouds go by … Imagine placing sections of Terry Riley’s Rainbow in Curved Air over the most blissed-out fuzz from Heroin.” — Foxy Digitalis Neon Pibroch, the brand new full-length CD from Astral Social Club, is dedicated to the memory of Textile Records founder Benoit Sonnette. Astral Social Club is the current project of Neil Campbell, formerly of Vibracathedral Orchestra, Sunroof!, A Band, and many more. Campbell’s approach as Astral Social Club could be seen as both a continuation and a refutal of his work with Vibracathedral Orchestra—a continuation in that it continues the quest into the unknown stellar regions of improvised drone-based music, and a refutal in its espousal of most of the elemental organic rock modes that made that band so special. The focus here is more on alien electronics and overloaded Astral Social Club loop disorientation, sometimes even working with sounds more readily associated with the far end of Neon Pibroch Genre: Experimental dance music, to produce a truly vast 21st century psychedelic sound. Although largely a solo project, Label: Important Records Astral Social Club collaborators have included Tirath Singh Nirmala, Richard Youngs, and CD: IPT 155 Arttu Partinen. Price Code: P

Super Grease is a limited edition vinyl-only release from Neil Campbell, a member of Sunroof!, Vibracathedral Orchestra, and A Band. Late last year, VHF Records released a compilation CD drawn from an earlier string of self-released CD-Rs that showcased the diverse methods employed in Astral Social Club’s recordings. These encompass straight-ahead drumbox/synthesizer jamming, computer processing, swirling loops, primitive vocal hollers, noise catharsis, tranquil guitar shimmer, and a busload of other angles. The live experience throws these methods up in the air, cranks up the volume, and adds a visceral, seething human presence before letting it fall all over the audience. Despite the excessive use of electronics and processing, the overriding feeling is one of a raw, ecstatic communion with the music, a million miles from sterile “electronica.”
