NAIL WELCOMES CENTRAL CONTROL INTL TO ITS ROSTER! Central Control International is the production home of former Mute recording artist Barry Adamson. From here, Adamson and his team will release music, books, and films with a dedication to satisfying a unique take on life by exploring the artist in everyone.
Overview Acclaimed audio/visual and textual artist Barry Adamson (of Nick Cave’s Bad Seeds and legendary art-punks Magazine) returned in 2006 with his sixth studio album—a debut release on his own label called Stranger on the Sofa. Seen by some as the natural successor to 1996’s Oedipus Schmoedipus in its dark delivery, twisted humor, and mind-bending ease of genre shift, Stranger on the Sofa has so far only received a low-key release in the US despite its gathered accolades. An hour of Adamson’s finest work in the fields of rock, soundtrack, instrumental freak-outs, and future-jazz.
Press Quotes “All over the place, swinging through dark pop, atmospheric instrumentals, and demented circus music … unique music with great personality.” — Pitchfork [7.5]

NAIL WELCOMES WABANA AND SPIRIT OF ORR TO ITS ROSTER! Wabana started in 1994 as a shining beacon of the motherland, beginning with a series of choice singles including the first-ever release by Calexico. The label has worked with many friends to put out some of the finest music available, and the beacon continues to shine. Spirit of Orr debuted in 1994 with the release of Moviola’s Frantic. As a follow-up to their second CD Dread (Bulb Records), Ann Arbor’s cassette culture noise therapists hit back hard with an unofficial LP release on Bad Glue Records. After working together in notorious garage outfit Thee Headcoates, 1999’s In Blood sees Billy Childish and Holly Golightly making their first outing as a duo. Each of the twelve tracks is constituted from only the most primal blues-soaked building blocks. While simplicity, repetition, and sheer rock ‘n’ roll minimalism are at the heart of the album, In Blood never ceases to hold interest.

In 2000, Japan’s psychedelic rock masters hit the US and were captured … on tape. That tape surfaced a year later as the much sought-after Born To Be Wild in the USA 2000 LP, which looked like one of those classic dubious “live” records from the ’70s. Apparently there were 1,000 pressed, and they disappeared very quickly. Now, that LP has been re-mastered for this CD release.

Recorded in Byron Bay in 2006, On the Right Track mixes the coastal island vibes of Australia’s and Jamaica’s hippest towns with a heavy jazz influence. Among a myriad of reissues and compilations, this album stands out as having the best new original material on an international Skatalites release since 1964. Studio sessions were held in the style of a classic jazz session, much like the “one-take” upbringing Studio 1 provided the group in the early days. From the late ’50s into the ’60s, The Skatalites transcended popular music, introducing and defining Jamaican music and culture to the world. Combining the best of American boogie-woogie with R&B, jazz, and big band swing, The Skatalites created the up-tempo syncopated island beat dubbed “ska,” which evolved into rocksteady and reggae. The original backing band for Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff, and Toots & The Maytals, these two-time Grammy nominees have toured extensively worldwide since the ’80s.
Press Quotes “Without the killer grooves and syncopated horn blasts of the always wonderful Skatalites, life on this planet would be a far duller thing.” — L.A. Daily News “The Skatalites are Jamaica’s answer to the Motown house band and Booker T. & The MG’s combined.” — Rolling Stone “The Skatalites took influences from jazz, calypso and US rhythm ‘n’ blues to help create the sound that dominated Jamaican sixties music … This is a must have album for anyone interested in Jamaican music and a great introduction for those who wish to learn.” — BBC.co.uk “More than a band, The Skatalites were and are an institution, an aggregation of top-notch musicians who didn’t merely define the sound of Jamaica, they were the sound of Jamaica across the ’50s and ’60s.” — All Music Guide “The second wave of ska produced some good bands and some great music, the third wave fewer, but if you want to really hear the music played with respect for its deepest roots, you need to go to the source, and that is undoubtedly The Skatalites … The band is more musically sophisticated than many of its contemporaries were and than pretty much all of its present day imitators are.” — PopMatters

Overview
M. Ward: vocals, guitar, piano Adam Selzer: mandolin, dulcimer, drums, percussion Carlos Forster: vocals
Coming on the heels of his six-year stint in indie rock/folk trio Rodriguez, M. Ward crafted these tunes on his travels between San Luis, Chicago, and Portland. Recorded by longtime friend Adam Selzer at the then-fledgling Type Foundry Studio in Portland, this album is about as intimate as it gets. The voices are hushed and whispered. The guitars are subtle yet precise, hinting at the virtuosity that would rear its head on future releases and collaborations. Taking pages from the book of John Fahey, with nods to Leadbelly and Woody Guthrie, this album is the perfect starting point for your obsession with M. Ward.
Press Quotes “Old-fashioned sounds that feel as if they were recorded on a front porch at sunrise, Ward’s gentle vocals lilt while a number of ‘other’ noises sneak in from the background … and this is only the beginning.” — Blogcritics “The album’s lo-fi feel creates a comforting and intimate mood that draws the listener in, a characteristic that would become a Ward trademark.” — Harp “Duet For Guitars #2 is the foundation for Matt’s solo career and is an album all M. Ward fans should have a copy of.” — Each Note Secure

Overview “Hutch and Kathy, originally intended as the next Urban Legends album, uses the basics of the indie pop canon—lots of acoustic guitars, brushed drums, and harmonica and organ as needed … Foster’s harmonies sweeten Harris’s nasal Northwestern twang, with lyrics that depict everything from the picturesque ocean nights you’d expect an Oregon native to write about to the wrongs of Manifest Destiny.” — Splendid

Drawing from over sixty years of American music—from Leadbelly to Kim Deal—Hutch and Kathy strive to continue the tradition of great American music and to be a healthy mix of all their pop influences, as opposed to emulating just a few of them. Armed with an eight-track reel recorder and a keen sense for harmony, Hutch Harris and Kathy Foster warm your heart and break it, possibly at the same time. Compelling vocal harmonies weave their way through short, concise, folky pop songs. Mostly acoustic guitars and brush drums open up space for the occasional bass and keyboard parts. Lyrical topics run the gamut from personal to political, bringing to mind mid–’60s folk-pop mixed with the sound of early ’90s K Records bands like Tiger Trap and Heavenly.

Overview “Renowned for his ability to create twisted soundscapes, Fenton’s album Artificial Perfect comprises elements of Nine Inch Nails and Aphex Twin in the mix.” — Uncut Until last year, Ade Fenton was best known for his independent techno record labels Perverter and Advanced, both of which provided the perfect platform for his brand of harsh, twisted soundscapes, epitomized by his brutal Confessions of an English Psychopath single. However, in 2006 Fenton coproduced Gary Numan’s Jagged, described by Q magazine as a “shudder-fest of consistent quality.” Their professional relationship an unqualified success, the pair continued working throughout 2006 on a series of studio and live collaborations, including new versions of a number of classic Numan tracks as well as brand-new material. Since completing Jagged, Fenton has set up a new music production company, Industry Music, and is currently producing albums for a number of artists. Releases on such revered labels as Potential, Ground, Planet Rhythm, Audio, Zenit, Primate, and Primevil have Ade Fenton feat. Overview “There is a staggeringly high level of quality that infests just about everything TLS touch … Their sound is as synonymous with technical prowess as it is with instinctive innovation.” — Pitchfork Following the success of their last album, From the Double Gone Chapel, Two Lone Swordsmen return and the evolution of their sound continues. Generally credited with inventing indie dance through his work with Primal Scream, Flowered Up, and My Bloody Valentine, Andrew Weatherall pioneered the crossover between big electronic beats and equally big guitar chords—and his fondness for good old-fashioned rock ‘n’ roll is celebrated on this release. Featuring elements of garage and rockabilly, but also the more familiar layer of electronica, Wrong Meeting 2 moves in a new direction. What is particularly striking about this album is Weatherall’s growth in stature—not only as a singer and frontman, but also as a sharp wordsmith. Here, we find tales of love and rejection that rip open a seething underbelly of mistrust, tension, revenge, and redemption. Wrong Meeting 2 wears its influences Two Lone Swordsmen Wrong Meeting II on its sleeve while still sounding utterly contemporary. Overview “Tinkling bells, straight-ahead acoustic guitar, and wobbly theremin [are] joined by elegantly skewed feedback and a subtle drum build-up … the future doesn’t really have to be so bleak. Recorded in a basement in Seattle, the trio has improved upon the lo-fi sound of their debut. This time out, each song is an anthem. Slightly fuzzy vocals collide with simple guitar lines, start-stop drumming, handclaps, la las, ba bas, ooh oohs, slippery theremin, some eight-bit Nintendo keyboard sounds, electronic kazoo, double trumpet, and enough energy to make you play air drums and shout out lyrics in the car, office, deli, or wherever you spend your days.

Overview “Not saccharine or Splenda—more like Ornette Coleman’s shocking 1959 recordings as heard through today’s ears.” — All About Jazz It gets nasty at times—feedback laden, meters in the red, even psychedelic—as Tigersmilk pours it on thick, straight from some cosmic mind’s eye teat. Android Love Cry is the third album from the voodoo concrète jazz crew of Rob Mazurek (Chicago Underground, Mandarin Movie, Exploding Star Orchestra), Jason Roebke (Rapid Croche, Fred Lonberg-Holm Trio, Terminal 4), and Dylan van der Schyff (Talking Pictures). It’s a dynamically gorgeous and dissonant thirteen-part cycle that delves into obscure conditions of wilderness and transformation backed by a pulsing and often volatile syncopation not far from Max Neuhaus’s electro-acoustics or even Cluster’s space ‘n’ rhythm glow.

Overview “Alexandre St-Onge’s odd panoramas … simply unfurl in their own style, in their own time, and in doing so, are rather fascinating to explore.” — Spiderbytes Mon animal est possible is a collection of electronic love songs written and conceived by Alexandre St-Onge, whose purpose behind the recordings was to try to communicate with monsters and exorcise/exercise his own monstrosity through them, thus making possible his own animal. A collection of eight pieces just under forty minutes, Mon animal est possible reveals St-Onge at his most melodious and sensuous thus far. The album is largely centered on vocals, both those of St-Onge and his partner Fanny. This is the polar opposite of his debut solo effort; St-Onge has traded in massive passages of near silence for lush ballads and love songs filled with vocals and cinematic backgrounds. Alexandre StOnge has been releasing music with Alien8 Recordings for over eight years, beginning with his debut Alexandre St-Onge solo effort Image/Negation back in May 1999. Since then the label has released his work as a member of Shalabi Effect (his trio with David Kristian and Sam Shalabi) as well as his Krautrock-inspired Mon animal est possible Genre: Avant Rock project Et Sans, not to mention numerous releases on which he is a guest performer. Overview Alien8 Recordings presents the release of Overpass!, an audio meditation on the strangeness of Vancouver. A mix of dialogue, interviews, documentary material, and composed music, Overpass! presents the story of Antonia, a new arrival who finds herself mystified by the city. This CD is the product of a three-year collaboration between Adam Frank, who teaches poetry at the University of British Columbia, and Sam Shalabi, a Montreal-based composer and musician. Shalabi has been a longtime member of the Alien8 Recordings family, with two solo releases, a trio recording with David Kristian and Alexandre St-Onge, and four recordings with his psychedelic improv ensemble Shalabi Effect. In seven vignettes, Antonia orients herself through encounters with real and fictional locals. She investigates the city’s peculiarities, including its preoccupation with nature, failed freeway projects, and attempts at urban planning. Weirdly drawn to the Keefer Street pedestrian overpass and its history, Antonia finds a way to understand Vancouver’s particular response to modernization.
Selling Points • A 500-copy limited edition release specially packaged in a custom gatefold CD package with a thirty-sixpage libretto. • Sam Shalabi, one of the most active members of Montreal’s experimental music community, is the co-founder of psychedelic improv ensemble Shalabi Effect.

Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O Mantra of Love Genre: Avant Rock Label: Alien8 Recordings CD: ALI 44 Price Code: Q Previously Available
Alien8 Recordings announces the reprint of Acid Mothers Temple’s Mantra of Love! Mantra of Love is a classic release in the expanding catalogue of one of today’s most exciting psychedelic ensembles. It is beautifully recorded, featuring the group’s cleanest production thus far. Cotton Casino’s vocals were beautifully captured, rivaling the Univers Zen ou de Zéro à Zéro release on France’s Fractal label. Alien8’s previous release by the band, Electric Heavyland, became one of their most notorious efforts due to its overthe-top intensity. While Electric Heavyland served AMT diehards with more of the band’s patented psyche mayhem, it also struck a chord with the metal set due to its undeniable heavyosity. This album is made up of two tracks. “La Le Lo,” a traditional Occitan piece, is somewhat similar to band’s classic “La Novia” piece. It is largely based around the melodic vocals of Cotton Casino, but halfway through the track speed guru Kawabata Makoto lets the thunder roll, giving the song an entirely new feeling. The fifteen-minute closing piece, “L’Ambition dans le Miroir,” starts off with Casino’s gurgling synth washes panning from left to right, and then introduces a beautiful guitar melody. Mantra of Love is the perfect release for those who enjoy the more melodic, drone-out, hippie elements of the band, but who also want to let loose from time to time.
Selling Points • A classic Acid Mothers Temple release, out of print for over a year. • Beautifully packaged in a new digipak edition.

Overview “For Merzbow fans, this album is definitely a keeper, since it is rich, ferocious, and surprisingly entertaining.” — All Music Guide Alien8 Recordings announces the reissue of the long out-of-print Aqua Necromancer release by Merzbow. Originally released in October 1998, this is an all-time favorite release by the undisputed master of noise. Its emphasis on prog-inspired rhythm has made it one of his most sought-after releases by fans. Aqua Necromancer was the label’s third release by Masami Akita, and is certainly the most dynamic. On this recording, Akita includes the use of sampled drums lifted from the likes Soft Machine and L’Orme. From the super beat-heavy “Contrapuntti Indian” to “Farsa del Buen Vivir” (the most listener-friendly Merzbow track ever), Aqua Necromancer marks a departure from his more recent super-brutal output—and the results are amazing as well as refreshing. The recording will stand out in any Merzbow collection as absolutely topnotch material!

Look Mexico, Floridian boys with hearts as big as Texas and shorts as short as your sister’s miniskirt, are officially out of the studio with an album in the band’s very own style—yacht rock. If you don’t know what yacht rock is, it’s because these boys coined the term, and the new album puts this new genre on audio display. This Is Animal Music is as unique as it is timeless, mashing together various elements including—but not limited to—horns.Yes, we said it: horns! And you should hear just how well they do it. AbsolutePunk.net says, “vintage emo is long overdue to be back in vogue,” and Alternative Press couldn’t agree more, naming Look Mexico one of the 100 Bands to Know in 2007!
Press Quotes “Intricately woven guitars over frantic drums and delightfully emotive vocals. Think Minus the Bear if they listened to a ton of American Football.” — Alternative Press “A bit of Settlefish, a touch of Modest Mouse, a trace of Built to Spill, but always owning enough ingenuity and personal flare to justify its own brand.” — Aversion “Incredibly infectious and often complex songs … easily accessible without sounding generic or boring.” — Wonkavision “If American Football and Explosions in the Sky were to procreate, this would be the result.” — PunkNews.org

Anchored in the city of roses and rain, The Coterie kickstarted its career in early 2006 when members of a few of Portland’s mostremembered punk bands (Spare Lead, Dayton, Know It All, Last Day To Live) pooled together to form a solid, high-energy five-piece. After only six months, the band had multiple high-profile shows under its belt, and was quickly gaining the attention of hardcore fans everywhere. In July 2006, the group signed with New School Records and headed into the studio to record a new album. Now, with Aesthete completed, the band has begun booking tours and will be out on the road all summer to support its new masterpiece. Running just under fifty minutes in length, Aesthete leaves listeners with exactly enough time to catch a breath between breakneck tempos, zealous guitar riffing, and passionate lyrics. Using unique musical compositions strung together with melody, The Coterie delivers a sound that is singular and definitive, urgent and ambitious. With just one listen, you will agree that this debut has all the ingredients for success and longevity. A must for fans of Underoath, Killswitch Engage, and Atreyu.
Press Quotes “Based out of the city of roses, The Coterie is an exciting new band on the verge of breaking out in a big and glorious way … Judging by the four songs previewed in the band’s MySpace, expect The Coterie to gain a wild and rabid fan base in no time. The tunes are well written and performed, and the band’s mass appeal could easily attract fans across the modern musical spectrum. The Coterie mix the pop inflections of Silverstein with the heavy aesthetics of Underoath, coming up with a sound that will win over a mass of new fans well beyond their Portland, Oregon home base.” — Highwire Daze

Call it talent, magic, or whatever you want, but Greenleaf ’s got it. A supergroup of the stoner rock scene, the band was formed in late 1999 by guitarist Tommi Holappa (Dozer), drummer Daniel Liden (Demon Cleaner, Dozer, And Machine Said Behold), and engineer/bassist Bengt Bäcke. Featuring a revolving cast of fellow musicians who share a love of heavy fuzz rock—including Fredrik Nordin (Dozer), Daniel Jansson (Stonewall Noise Orchestra), and Peder Bergstrand (Lowrider)—Greenleaf has consistently defined what rock ‘n’ roll was, is, and should be. Like the band’s past releases, Agents of Ahriman is a righteous kick in the ass and a testament to the almighty riff. This time, the band is joined by Oskar Cedermalm (Truckfighters), Erik Bäckwall (Dozer), Jocke Åhslund (Payback), and a handful of guests. This new lineup keeps Greenleaf moving forward without losing track of what made the group great in the first place. Take note—this is what rock bands should sound like.
Selling Points • Featured in the Guitar Hero II video game! • Includes members of Dozer, Lowrider, and Demon Cleaner. • Greenleaf has been featured on MTV, Fox Fuel, and many action sports programs. • Major media mailing in conjunction with release date. • US tour in Fall 2007.

Overview “Avarus is one of the cornerstone groups of modern Finnish psychedelia, trailblazers for the recombinant aesthetic pioneered by a small gaggle of artists whose self-released, subterranean music is as baffling and crude as it is celebratory and hilarious.” — The Wire Avarus, the world’s premier free-noisy-folky-underwater-drugged-out-spacey-hirsute-childlikeKrautrock-disco-party-band combo, is back! In 2006, Secret Eye brought this fabulous Finnish collective to the US for the first time, and the band performed at Terrastock VI in Providence, RI. Aside from blowing minds there, the group also played a private Olneyville warehouse party and performed live on Brian Turner’s WFMU radio show—then went straight back to Finland. But fear not! Now, in the glorious hot summer of 2007, Secret Eye brings you Avarus’s first proper American tour! Overview Much like Gershon Kingsley, Fred Katz has had one of the more extraordinary, if offbeat, careers in contemporary music. A vet of Army bands and Hollywood orchestras, plus sessions with Lena Horne and Carmen McRae, Katz made his biggest mark by bringing the cello to the forefront of the jazz repertoire. He did this best as a member of the Chico Hamilton Quintet, the ever-experimental ensemble that dropped Zen, a Pacific jazz gem of Katz compositions. Of course, he also did all the arranging for Harpo Marx’s Harpo in Hi-Fi LP, Ken Nordine’s classic Word Jazz project, the original score to Little Shop of Horrors, and the ever-popular Sidney Poitier Reads Plato record. He did an A&R stint at Decca before settling into a longtime academic gig as a must-take music professor. The most admired (if under-discussed) Katz album is probably this one, which is dedicated to the idea that all jazz is born from “the roots of people.” The roots explored here are folk songs—American, Hebrew, and African. “Baal Shem Tov” and “Rav’s Nigun” feature guest appearances by Paul Horn on sax and legendary LA jazzman Buddy Collette on flute. The tracks, from 1959, sound prophetic—an avant tackle of jazz and Jewish tradition.

Overview Bert Susanka, founder of The Ziggens, has always wanted to put out a solo record—an album on which he could express himself freely, without songwriting restrictions and deadlines. So, Cornerstone RAS gave him that opportunity, and he did not disappoint. This is clearly Susanka’s most personal album to date, with songs of triumph, heartbreak, and all emotions in between. The Ziggens enjoyed floating the crafty moniker “cowpunk surfabilly” that was once slapped on them, and Susanka’s songs still reflect this genre-bending playfulness. But, they also capture a more decisively crafted production that is a reflection of his own sensibilities, without the four-headed Ziggens monster he enjoyed writing hundreds of songs with over the past few decades. Reference points from the Dead Milkmen and Beach Boys lead to tender introspective ballads and self-deprecating takes on suburban survival, alling add up to what will certainly be a widely talked-about album—one that has been brewing for years.

“If Annette Funicello had dropped acid and gotten knocked up by Brian Wilson and Dee Dee Ramone during a barnyard hoe-down, the result would have to be The Ziggens.” — Eastern Surf Magazine “Probably the most diverse and purely entertaining band in the country.” — L.A.Times

The boys from A Farewell Rescue have been locked in a basement for the last several months, diligently working on a new full-length. Now, it is time to reap the benefits of their debut album! Never Meet Your Heroes is a pop-punk gem in the vein of Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, Coheed and Cambria, and New Found Glory—a must-have for any pop-punk fan! After spending three weeks in Buffalo working with the legendary Doug White (Gym Class Heroes, Snapcase, Earth Crisis, It Dies Today, Every Time I Die) at Watchmen Studios for the third consecutive time, the guys have stepped it up a notch. Stronger, catchier, and more cohesive, Never Meet Your Heroes successfully breathes life into the sounds of bands from years past. Lyrically, this new recording reflects the sense of separation and detachment that the band’s mountainous home region imposes on them. A Farewell Rescue takes the isolation of Central Pennsylvania and constructs an incredibly infectious and intelligent synthesis of nostalgic melodic hardcore in the vein of Lifetime, Kid Dynamite, and Strike Anywhere. While offering a list of bands that have influenced the band certainly helps identify its sound, it does not reveal the ease with which A Farewell Rescue is able to master these influences, rearranging the styles of the past so that the band is both admirer and iconoclast, master and student.
Press Quotes “A Farewell Rescue rocks it on the stage as well as in the studio. One of the best live bands I’ve seen in a while, AFR packs energy into everything they take on. It’s obvious to see what influences AFR, but it is also obvious how the band takes each influence and flips it to create a fresh take. This band is worth checking out, especially if they’re playing a show near you.” — Penn-Punk.com

Noise In You is an album of gorgeous music about noisy emotions: our desires and distractions, anxieties and passions, love and loss, and the living hum of our bodies. It is David Garland’s eighth album since entering New York’s downtown scene in the 1980s, and it is the first to receive the wide distribution and attention his music deserves. Garland, a multi-instrumentalist currently exploring the sumptuous jangle of a twelve-string guitar, sings with a voice that is deep, honest, and intimate. Noise In You is unclassifiable: it is pop music that’s both experimental and accessible, and is rich with intricate layered harmonies and startling colors & textures. It features the beautiful, sometimes mystical voices of a younger generation of musicians—Sufjan Stevens, Mira Romantschuk (Mi and L’au), Diane Cluck, Viking Moses, and David Deporis—together with guitars, flute, piano, clarinet, sarode, oboe, and more. Noise In You unfolds as a wondrous, subtly interconnected song cycle that sweeps you up in its imaginativeness, drama, and sensual pleasure.
Press Quotes “David Garland is a superb, crazily imaginative songwriter.” — Village Voice “David Garland … has an uncanny knack for framing his keen observances of the mundane into highly personable art-pop songs. He coaxes his tales into devilishly catchy melodies, wraps them in beguiling orchestrations, and delivers them with his warm, inviting baritone.” — Time Out New York

Overview “Palestine has a way of choosing notes so as to tremendously affect the thickness of the sound and create panoramic variety (and even microtonal anomalies) among the overtone masses he is creating.” — Village Voice Charlemagne Palestine is a historically important early minimalist, a contemporary of Philip Glass, Steve Reich, LaMonte Young, and Tony Conrad. The past five years have seen a great resurgence of interest in his music. A Sweet Quasimodo… is a long piece for two pianos played simultaneously in a tremolo style that Palestine calls “strumming,” a technique that has defined his piano music since the late ’60s. It progresses in surges and ebbs, and dense sonorities with hypnotically dancing overtones grow out of its few opening pitches. This live recording from the noted Maybeck Recital Hall also contains Palestine’s short comments about his life in California in the ’70s and, accompanied by a rubbed brandy snifter, the singing of a few very short “ritual” songs in his unique falsetto vocal style. Today, his audience larger than ever, he tours throughout the world performing his own music and creating installations.

Duane Pitre/Pilotram Ensemble Organized Pitches Occurring In Time Genre: Experimental Label: Important Records CD: IPT 154 Price Code: P NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA
Organized Pitches Occurring In Time consists of two twenty-five-minute pieces of music, both spawned from Duane Pitre’s conceptual composition/score Ensemble Drones. With a form reminiscent of works by La Monte Young’s Theater of Eternal Music and tonality touching on the floating works of Terry Riley, these are aural tapestries based on a minimal tonal palette, with their instrumentation consisting of guitars, alto saxophones, bass clarinet, violin, viola, cello, tone generator, and pump organ. After Duane Pitre’s departure from San Diego’s Camera Obscura in Summer 2000, he started the project known as Pilotram. In September 2004 Pitre moved to Brooklyn and began in-depth studies of music and sound, including the physics of sound, the involvement of mathematics in tuning and temperament, the ancient tuning system of Just Intonation, and other microtonal tuning systems, as well as the minimalist composers La Monte Young, Terry Riley, and Steve Reich. 2006 found Pitre heading back to San Diego to focus on his solo works, and also marked the transformation of his performance/recording title from Pilotram to Duane Pitre/Pilotram; 2007 will see further title transformation to Duane Pitre, shedding the Pilotram moniker altogether.
Selling Points • Duane Pitre was a member of Camera Obscura before leaving to form Pilotram. • Pitre is a composer/performer who is recognized for his creation of multiple abstract sounds such as dense/atmospheric drones and minimalist compositions/improvisations. • Full promotional mailing by Important Records. • Ads in The Wire.

Overview “Eleh makes music from pure analogue sources and this is minimalist sound at its best; pure, deep, and incredibly precise. Apparently the group was set up in honour of Charlemagne Palestine, La Monte Young, Eliane Radigue & Pauline Oliveros and I can really hear the similarities. Mastered and cut at RTI (one of the world’s best pressing plants) this is audiophile sound and truly spiritual—the slight variations become tides of change, and on listening you begin to notice the tiniest changes in tone and texture. This is the kind of academic sound you can totally become absorbed in and it should appeal to early electronic followers and minimalists everywhere!” — Boomkat

Overview “Barbez includes a brilliant theremin player who smokes cigarettes and a full-throated Russian singer who comes across like Joan of Arc with a sense of humor. They cover everything from Bertolt Brecht to Black Sabbath, but the real attraction is their melodically haunting originals. With a folk-music sound located somewhere between turn-of-century Eastern Europe and modern America, it’s arty rock that moves between brooding and winking.” — The New Yorker The eighth release in Important’s Arts & Crafts series, which combines music with handmade artwork from the artists featured on the recordings. This 7” comes housed in a screen-printed jacket by Dan Kaufman, Barbez’s primary songwriter. Each is signed & numbered. The 7” will be followed by a full-length on Tzadik. Barbez has received accolades from a wealth of publications, called “compelling” by Time Out New York. Barbez takes shape in a sunstruck phantasm: Kurt Weill swims the length of a still pond, while underwater The Residents refurbish their home and Erik Satie descends from above to lie in the grass and sip seltzer. Provoked by French musette, Argentine tango, post-war classical, and pre-MTV punk, Barbez wrings these disparate worlds to form the band’s own soundscape.
Selling Points • Features virtuosic theremin player Pamelia Kurstin, who has played with many great artists including David Byrne, Air, John Zorn, Cibo Matto, and more. • Barbez has released two substantial, successful full-lengths for Important Records.

Thirty seconds into Jason Holstrom’s new island-pop-masterpiece, and you’re on vacation. In the opener, melodic surf guitar and whip cracks punctuate a tribal beat under a bouncing bed of ukuleles and angelic vocal harmonies—and the stage is set for a half-hour adventure that is completely different from anything else you’ll find in music today. Holstrom is well known as a founding member of Seattle standouts U.S.E. and Wonderful. He is also active recording other artists; recent credits include the new Aqueduct and Dolour albums. Over the course of two years, Holstrom set out to capture the older sound of Hawaii, referencing traditional production techniques and diving into the catalogs of ’60s pop, Hawaiian, and calypso stars. He then single-handedly created a richly textured pop concept album, with massive layering of sound and spirit. Unlike his previous productions, Thieves is an entirely organic construction, completely devoid of synthesizers or drum machines. The sound palette of the album is rich and bright, combining layer upon layer of vocal harmonies, ukuleles, percussion, slide guitars, horn sections, field recordings, and more to complete each colorful song. One of the most unique musical experiences you can find in pop music today, it is as beautiful and enticing as the islands themselves!

Overview “The more one listens to this album, the more its oddball charms reveal themselves … an oddly appealing example of what indie rock has to offer.” — All Music Guide Welcome to the private, brightly infantile, electrically sanctified world of Grampall Jookabox’s idiot savant folk rock! The spectrum of influences and appropriations feeding this album are impressively, almost schizophrenically, varied. There are hints of early blues, Civil War ballads, and children’s sidewalk chalk rhymes, all filtered through spastically epic and innovative intuition to create a final product not unlike the early work of Daniel Johnston, though far more refined. With debut Scientific Cricket, Grampall Jookabox emerges with the explicit goal of creating its own “anthology” of American folk music, focusing on the strange, dark, and morbid characteristics of turn-of-the-century sounds.

Five years is a long time for a band like Marmoset, who resides in a city derisively referred as “Naptown.” But somehow, the band has managed to bottle all of the aspects that make it the critically acclaimed group we all love, and put them all into one album. From the Swell Maps-inspired tumultuous clamor of their debut EP Hiddenforbidden, their addictive two-minute anthems on Today It’s You, and the epic joyful dirges from Record In Red, Florist Fired has it all. Although principal songwriter Jorma Whittaker possesses an encyclopedic knowledge of Beatles-esque melodies and is more likely to cite his musical influences from John Lennon and friends, you get the unmistakable feeling that the band owes way more to a Keith Richards-led Stones swagger. Until the public is ready for a trip into the madness, tension, and ecstasy that is Marmoset, the aural documents contained on Florist Fired will serve quite nicely as the chariot on the road towards canonization—even if only in the pages of Irwin Chusid and Julian Cope.

From his first days as Ornette Coleman’s Harmolodic guitarist in Prime Time, his path to guitar innovator was a fast one. In the ten-year period between 1973, when he began his formal relationship with Harmolodics and Ornette Coleman, and 1983, when he recorded one of the epochal albums of the 1980s (Odyssey), it can be argued that Ulmer’s evolution was the logical outgrowth of Hendrix, and just as significant. The band on, including Charles Burnham and Warren Benbrow, has since become known as Odyssey and is recognized today as the quintessential Ulmer band. A return of this group after a seven-year hiatus is a cause for celebration, and a call to those who may have forgotten to take notice. A return as musically engaging and powerful as this one is a reminder of how startlingly original, innovative, and downright forceful James “Blood” Ulmer is as an artist.
Press Quotes “Electric guitarist James “Blood” Ulmer … is one of jazz’s great progressives.” — Will Hermes, Entertainment Weekly “Back In Time is the new year’s first A+, Ulmer’s friskiest since the 1983 Columbia LP from which the trio derives its name.” — Francis Davis, Village Voice “Any written description of Odyssey the band is no longer valid by the time the ink dries. This group redefines itself every few moments.” — Thomas Conrad, JazzTimes
Selling Points • The band’s first recording in seven years. • James “Blood” Ulmer’s Odyssey recording for Columbia is an acknowledged classic. • His recent blues recordings for Hyena have received rave reviews and helped to introduce him to a new blues audience. • Vernon Reid’s production of Ulmer’s last four albums has reinforced Ulmer’s status as a guitar icon. • Hyena released the fourth of Ulmer’s blues CDs on May 8th, with a full press and radio push.
