Featured Artists Marla Hansen: viola, vocals, guitar/Sufjan Stevens: vocals, piano, percussion/ Shara Worden: vocals/Sebastian Krueger: guitar, clarinet/Rob Moose: guitar, violin/Nate Lithgow: bass/Maria Jeffers: cello/Sam Bair: drums, engineering, mixing/Naho Tsutsui: violin/Katy Luo: accordion

Overview As a classically trained violist who hardly ever plays classical music, Marla Hansen has performed with Sufjan Stevens, My Brightest Diamond, Oneida, Inlets, Smokey Robinson, Alice Coltrane, Duncan Sheik, Jay-Z, and Kanye West. She also recently had a rather surreal run-in with Il Divo on the Today Show, after which she concluded that, for artistic and moral reasons, she never wants to play with Il Divo again. Her affiliations with all of these artists have led her to perform at such venues as Radio City Music Hall, Lincoln Center, Tonic, Nashville’s Ryman Theater, New Orleans’ House of Blues, and on Saturday Night Live and Austin City Limits. Wedding Day is an EP of six songs written by Marla Hansen. Although she does sing and play guitar throughout the entire recording, she is not quite ready to trade her viola for a guitar, and many of the songs feature her plucked viola as the primary instrument. Wedding Day runs the gamut from soft, spacious, folksy songs to upbeat, quirky pop. Marla Hansen’s honey-sweet voice weaves multiple instrumentations, background vocals, and hand percussion together to give listeners the feeling they are in the room with her and her band. Guests include members of Inlets, My Brightest Diamond, Antony & The Johnsons, and Locksley.

Press Quotes “Using a sweetly dark, creaky voice and plucked viola, Marla Hansen presents an esoteric, vintage sound that’s ultimately irresistible.” — The Onion “She sounds like tea and flowers and a good book in bed when you are tired. Hansen has a honeyed voice and sings delicious little songs as though she were singing to herself, for herself … it’s charming.” — 3hive.com “Somewhere between Sufjan Stevens and Final Fantasy (at his least fantastical) lies Marla Hansen, sometime Illinoise-maker and general friend of My Brightest Diamond and that crazy New York gang. And good! Yes, with soft viola-plucked piano-underlined songbits that sound exactly like the dappled spring sunlight breaking through trees to turn grass golden looks.” — The Torture Garden

Selling Points • Marla Hansen appears on numerous critically acclaimed albums including Sufjan Stevens’ Illinois, The National’s Boxer, Inlets’ Vestibule EP, My Brightest Diamond’s Bring Me the Workhorse, and the upcoming New Pornographers album. • Recent US tours with Sufjan Stevens, My Brightest Diamond, and Duncan Sheik. • On tour with The National – 30+ dates, September–October. • Heavy focus on internet marketing using IODA Promonet Pro, Last FM, and more. • Radio promotion will focus on college, high school, and internet stations with emphasis on the Midwest and East Coast. • Ads with Pitchfork and Insound.

Featured Artists Overview

Patrick Crump: drums, percussion, bass Stephen Mattos: guitar, lap steel, keyboards

On Athletic Automaton’s second full-length album, A Journey Through Roman’s Empire, the band devolves without diminishing. Songs and instrumentation have been reduced to key components, stripped bare of pretense until only the core remains, evaporating the distance between listener and band. This is minimalism set on heavy and trance gone sour. While deceptively simple and repetitive, the music is never rigid, never complacent or familiar. Alternately a swirl of precision and a countercurrent of resistance, Athletic Automaton is unafraid to find virtue in the accidental while remaining purposeful and determined. Here, Donald Duck riffs dribble past sprinting rhythms and asthmatic guitars swarm landscapes that bark back in opposition. A Journey Through Roman’s Empire is a psychedelic coliseum of reverse intonation rooted in Pittsburgh circa 1972; an audio sport the likes of which has never been heard before.

Press Quotes “Dressed in basketball jerseys, short shorts, and knee socks, and with flowing manes held back by terrycloth sweatbands, Athletic Automaton command attention through the sheer force of their personalities before they even pick up their instruments. As a duo, they add up to something rather deadly, like a seventies-era gym class gone somehow horribly wrong. Or maybe horribly right.” — Skyscraper “Calisthenics become repetitive exercises of sonic torture as the sweaty duo engages in musical drills designed to sap the energy of even the most fit and healthy listener.” — Dusted

Selling Points • Features guitarist Steve Mattos, formerly of Arab On Radar. • Vinyl LP import from Spain’s Trece Grabaciones. • Follows up AA’s collaborative LP with AIDS Wolf earlier this year. • Epic gladiator cover art by Seripop (Chloe & Yannick of AIDS Wolf). • Extensive press and radio mailing. • Ads with Skyscraper, Punk Planet,The Wire, Signal To Noise,Wonka Vision, and more.

Featured Artists Akiko Matsuura: vocals/John Webb: guitar, vocals/Kevin Hendrick: bass, vocals/Matt Warburton: bass/Rick Bennett: drums

Overview PRE’s first outing had an entire audience locked outside, watching through barred windows from above. In the months that followed, the band’s rhythmically infectious skip-alongs were demonstrated on a flurry of releases. PRE’s debut 7” Treasure Trails caught ears by surprise and wouldn’t let go. A rash of vinyl came in quick succession, pairing the band with acts like AIDS Wolf, Dmonstrations, Bardo Pond, and Comanechi. Most bizarrely, just last month Skin Graft seized a bootleg 7” for lawful distribution. Packaged in a calendar sleeve of compromising band photos, the record is moving at high velocity in collector’s circles, adding to PRE’s ascending allure. Recorded in a pizza storage unit with Westminster Brown at the controls, Epic Fits is cold sweat caught on two-inch tape. Those initial moonbeams shining through barred basement windows have been caught, meticulously sliced and diced, and reflected back in a brilliant, buoyant strobe light. Epic Fits is available in three editions. Two are CDs from Skin Graft Records: a standard jewel case and an individually numbered “first edition” packaged with a fold-out poster sleeve and encased in an embossed metal box. The gatefold vinyl LP is available from Lovepump United.

Press Quotes “Gonzo punkers PRE are well on their way to superstardom. Like Karen O on a cocktail of narcotics, crazy lead singer Keeks Matsuura screeches alongside messy metal guitars with an energy that’d make Duracell proud.” — NME

Selling Points • Available in two CD editions from Skin Graft Records: a standard jewel case and an individually numbered “first edition” packaged in an embossed metal box that shares the same dimensions as a normal jewel case for easy storage and display. • Skin Graft’s previous metal-wrapped release, the debut album from U.S. Maple, currently sells for up to $500 on the collector’s market. • LP comes in deluxe gatefold packaging with embossing, creamy blue vinyl, and a life-sized otter image. • PRE was asked to appear on Rough Trade’s Counter Culture compilation, made waves on a sold-out tour with The Gossip, and performed at the NME Music Awards. • Will tour the US and Canada this October, with performances at Pop Montreal and CMJ’s Music Marathon. • Extensive press and radio promotion by Blueghost Publicity and AAM. • Ads with Skyscraper, Punk Planet,The Wire, Signal To Noise,Wonka Vision, and more. • Viral marketing campaign includes “Popping Showers” video directed by Nathan Parker.

Featured Artists Matt Hull: drums Ian Hernandez: bass Tim Jacobson: guitar, vocals

Overview

Comprised of three like-minded gentlemen out to create songs culled from years of self-induced isolation, sexual regret, and audio experimentation, Electro Group teamed up with local Sacramento imprint Omnibus Records to issue their 2001 debut, A New Pacifica. Its tracks surfaced on more than a few taste-making college and community radio stations, and even made it to the playlist of legendary BBC DJ John Peel. A slew of compilation appearances and side projects followed: the group recorded a series of split 7”s, teamed up with Pavement co-founder Gary Young for a cover of Sonic Youth’s “100%,” and bassist Ian Hernandez formed Holy Smokes with Pinback’s Rob Crow and Hella’s Zach Hill. Live appearances with Sleater-Kinney, Quasi, and Swords Project followed, as well as their next studio venture, Ummo. With their second proper full-length, Good Technology, the members of Electro Group had to destroy their conceptions of music and modern life in general, reconstructing them from square one. While A New Pacifica explored a utopian society in the aftermath of California falling into the sea, and Ummo asked if we are alone in the universe, Good Technology finds Electro Group in a deconstructionalist mindset. It’s a rapidly changing world we live in, and the futuristic guitar-driven fuzz-pop of Good Technology provides an ideal soundtrack for it.

Press Quotes “Reinventing the wall of sound as electric blanket, this Northern California band takes My Bloody Valentine for a Ride, wrapping lyrical streams of self-consciousness in pillowy layers of guitar feedback and keyboard effects.” — Gear Magazine “Features grand, distortion-drenched ‘odds and ends’ (think the Jesus & Mary Chain or My Bloody Valentine) … Should you find yourself having trouble making out some of the lyrics, front man Tim Jacobson suggests making up your own.” — San Francisco Chronicle “A glorious blur of post-shoegazer haze.” — Shredding Paper

Selling Points • Long awaited (six years!) sophomore album. • Previous sales of 2,000+ units. • Has shared the stage with Sleater Kinney, Quasi, Swords Project, and more. • Members have worked on side projects with an impressive pedigree of indie rock talent, including Zach Hill (Hella), Rocketship (Slumberland Records), Gary Young (Pavement), Rob Crow (Pinback), and countless others. • Core radio service by AAM Sunday Service. • National promo campaign by NAIL Media. Additional mailing to national and international press outlets by Clairecords.

Overview “You’re left wanting more … there are few records I can recommend more this year in terms of pure pop replayability.” — Pitchfork [7.8] The debut album from Monster Movie—long out of print—has been re-birthed! Artwork has been revamped, a new catalog number has been assigned, and a bonus track from the vinyl version of the album, previously unavailable on CD in the US, has been added. Written, performed, and produced by Christian Savill and Sean Hewson, Last Night Something Happened was a landmark follow-up to the band’s self-titled debut EP. Recorded in 2001 at The White House studio with Martin Nichols engineering, the album shows a move away from the layered guitars and strong vocals of the EP to a more somber, subdued, warm sound. Here, the vocals are often layered, with Martin Wheeler and Louise Hewson adding their vocals to create a ghostly, disembodied effect. The instrumentation is more varied as well, with cheap keyboards and acoustic guitars mixing with radios, feedback, and broken effects pedals to create a warm hum.

Selling Points • Out of print for years, this classic is now available again! • Includes a bonus track previously unavailable on CD in the US. • Previous sales of this album over 2,500 units; total previous sales exceed 10,000 units. • Features former members of Slowdive and Eternal (who recorded for the esteemed Sarah Records label). • Service to core college radio stations by Clairecords. • National retail promo campaign by NAIL Media. CD: THG 1 (N) NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA

Formed in 1999 by members of Stars of the Lid, Ultrasound, Cinders, and ST37, seven-piece band My Education is an instrumental hybrid: part space rock cacophony, part punk rock sonic wipeout, and part ambient bad trip. Though comparisons to Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky, and Mono are natural, My Education’s sound and instrumentation are truly its own. And it only makes sense that the band would collaborate with Dälek, who has proven that there is music being created in this world that can draw on the best of the past and still be ten years ahead of its time. “Spiegel im Spiegel” is a piece of music originally written by Arvo Pärt in 1978. For track one, My Education took this piece and expanded on it by adding intricate layers of percussion, slide guitar, electric guitar, and bass to create a familiar, tranquil sound. For track two, Dälek and The Oktopus added in some sick beats as well as a variety of layered sounds and vocals to take the piece to a whole new level. Both songs were recorded by The Oktopus at The Deadverse studios, and were mastered by John Golden.

Selling Points • Dälek have a huge cross-genre following. They have collaborated with Krautrock legends Faust, Techno Animal (ex-Godflesh), Kid 606, Zu, Velma, and many more. • Limited to 1,000 copies on vinyl only. • Service to press and radio.

Overview “When I heard My Education, my jaw dropped at how incredibly talented this group is. A sixpiece that forges instrumental music that is more about movements than mainstream pop rock, My Education is a college on what you can do right when you sit down to put some songs to tape. Their instruments seem as if they’re one with the player, somehow co-existing on this plane of reality unlike any other musician out there.” — Smoother My Education’s 2002 debut, 5 Popes, spawned regional tours, college airplay, and much critical acclaim. 2005’s follow-up, Italian, fueled more national accolades and caught the ear of many musicians along the way. 2006 found My Education’s sound expanding and evolving with a new EP, Moody Dipper, which contained three new My Education tracks plus help from Kinski, Dälek, Red Sparowes, and Teith in the form of remixed Italian songs. 5 Popes was recorded in 2001 with engineer Chris “Frenchie” Smith (Young Heart Attack, Sixteen Deluxe), who has also worked with …And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead, Explosions in the Sky, Rhythm of Black Lines, and Dumptruck.

Selling Points • Reissue of My Education’s debut, critically acclaimed when initially released in 2001. • Service to press and radio.

Overview Signing Choir is the side project of The M’s bassist Joey King. Upon moving to Chicago in the midnineties, King immediately began tracking and demoing loads of material, venturing into a vast musical terrain. His true passion was music, and his move from the laid-back atmosphere of Arkansas was done in part to access a larger pool of musically minded individuals. Through acquaintances and coworkers, King found those individuals in one of Chicago’s finest groups. The members of The M’s are collaborative songwriters, and King added not only his five-string bass and baritone vocals, but also his flair for solid songwriting. After much touring, two full-lengths, and one EP with The M’s, King started to go back to his older tracks and re-hash them into what would become his debut release under the moniker Signing Choir. With great help from all his bandmates and friends in the Chicago music community, he has banged out a true lo-fi gem. Reminiscent of early records by Guided By Voices, Pavement, and Super Furry Animals, King has tapped into a confident mix of pop and rock to showcase an eclectic batch of music.

Selling Points • Solo debut from The M’s bassist Joey King. • Features appearances by other members of The M’s. • Press campaign; service to college and specialty radio programs. • Label sampler will feature two tracks from Signing Choir.

Overview “Gloriously messy guitar rock from Milwaukee. Prime melodic pop songs lurk beneath this band’s fucked-up veneer, but I suspect there’ll be time for that later. For now, it’s petulant, buried vocals; blitzed in-the-red guitars covering the songs like a thick molasses; and a stance that toggles between pissed and bored … the band practically implodes with big, echoey, trashy riffage.” — Pop Culture Press

Suburban Milwaukee is filled to the brim with young bands that love anything noisy and/or spastic. Standing with cocked heads and shrugged shoulders above that pack are The Box Social, who write smart pop songs with sharp hooks that cut through the feedback and the falling-over-oneself. The Box Social was formed in 2001 by high school sophomores Nick Junkunc and Brian Peoplis, soon adding lead guitarist Nick Woods (current bassist Dave Griesbach joined in 2006). A series of selfreleased EPs brought attention from around the Midwest, drawing comparisons to the Replacements and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. Milwaukee label No Karma came on board for 2005’s Blown to Bits, which earned glowing reviews, and its success enabled the band to tour the US several times over the next two years. The band quickly began writing a follow-up, Get Going, which was recorded at Chicago Recording Company with Dave Rieley and mastered by Trevor Sadler at Mastermind Productions. The first single, “Big T,” packs the same tightness and pummeling melody of their previous work with the maturity and sincerity of a DIY band coming into its own. Released at the end of February, the single’s online sales are quickly demanding a second pressing.

Selling Points • Ten-week summer tour in advance of street date. The band has shared stages with The Redwalls, The Pink Spiders, Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, and Rainer Maria.

Overview “Tractor Operator … could be called folk or Americana or even grunge, but that only puts limits on the music, which is a lot more cohesive than any sputtering, clashing smash of adjectives might suggest … It’s a good record because it has range—peaks and valleys. It knows when to rage like a motherfucker and when to chill the eff out … There’s some nice wordplay going on here; sometimes the lyrics are a little buried in distortion or noise, but it’s definitely worth a close listen to hear what the man’s got to say.” — Portland Mercury

Tractor Operator is a vehicle for Eric Jensen, member of Ferocious Eagle (54º40’ or Fight!). On this, his sophomore effort, he turns things up a notch or two, taking his quiet, lo-fi folk-pop and adding some strong rock tinkerings. Guitars jut out of the space created by his playful circular lyrical constructions. Drums crash around the melodic structures, pushing you through the narrative. And then, the volume comes down and you are at home on the couch, waking up to the static of the television after a few too many beers, groggy but ready to head for the comfort of bed.

Overview “We’ve been totally digging the always amazing Ethiopiques series, documenting the rich history of Ethiopian music, and it just keeps getting better and better with each volume. You think that would be plenty to keep the folks at Buda Records busy, but apparently not, as they’ve gone ahead and launched a new series entitled Zanzibara, chronicling the Swahili popular music of the East African Coast … lush, moody, swirling, slightly saturnine, and absolutely wonderful.” — Aquarius Records This new collection from the same folks who brought us the fantastic Ethiopiques series presents popular music from the eastern coast of Africa—Tunisia, Lamu, Mombasa, Tanga, Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, and more. The recordings on this collection date from 1968 to 1973, in many ways a transitional period for the country. Musiki wa dansi is generally sweet and laid-back as compared with dance music from neighboring Kenya, possibly an extension of the laid-back Tanzanian life in the ’60s and ’70s. It is built on a bed of guitars and bass, with drums, congas, and other percussion added. A chorus, rather than a single lead voice, usually sings the lyrics, and horn sections of trumpets and saxophones punctuate the vocals.

Selling Points • The third entry in a new series from the creators of Ethiopiques focuses on Tunisia’s sweet, laidback musiki wa dansi style. • Extensive twenty-eight-page booklet with liner notes in English and French. • Music from Buda’s various series on under-documented African pop music has received enthusiastic acclaim from NPR, WNYC, Pitchfork, All About Jazz, All Music Guide, Dusted, and more.

Fortunately, Corn Meal Dance makes his multi-faceted talents as bassist, composer, poet, bandleader, and songwriter abundantly clear. Here, William Parker’s soul-nourishing poetry and supremely catchy melodies are made manifest by a group featuring some of the finest improvisers in the world. Pianist Eri Yamamoto and singer Leena Conquest exquisitely augment Raining on the Moon, Parker’s long-standing quartet with Hamid Drake, Rob Brown, and Lewis Barnes. Corn Meal Dance is an incomparable, uncompromising, and magnificent work that AUM Fidelity is deeply honored to present.

Press Quotes “For those not familiar with Parker’s poetry, these pieces pursue an elemental purity through mystical language and metaphor, often verging on the psychedelic … When jazz historians look back on improvised music at the turn of this century, William Parker will stand as a giant among men.” — All About Jazz “These are great free-jazz art songs that emerge from an African-American vernacular. They’re meant to speak on behalf of the defeated and the downtrodden, to offer hope, dignity, and compassion. No one else in jazz is combining the personal and the universal with the same power or persuasiveness.” — Boston Phoenix “This is the jazz record for those who don’t necessarily listen to jazz very much. Highly recommended!” — Other Music “Amazing … going back to the future in search of a missing jazz link to the soul-poetry of Van Morrison.” — Village Voice

Selling Points • The most cross-genre accessible work that AUM Fidelity has produced is a supreme way to celebrate the label’s tenth anniversary! • A major new group work from William Parker showcases his gifts for poetic songcraft and mighty grooves along with his group’s unparalleled improvisational prowess. • Pianist Eri Yamamoto and singer Leena Conquest, who suffuses Parker’s words with passion and dignity, augment the quartet featuring Hamid Drake, Rob Brown, and Lewis Barnes. • Full service/promotion to national press and e-media by AUM Fidelity. • Full service/promotion to college, non-commercial, and NPR radio by AUM Fidelity. • Ads with All About Jazz, Signal To Noise, Stop Smiling, Point of Departure, Magnet, and more.

NAIL WELCOMES THE RETURN OF THE LOCUST family of labels

In addition to the flagship label of the same name, Locust is home to the spiritual jazz and groove of IKEF Records, the damaged electronica and hip-hop of Jib Door, and the questing international musics and field recordings of the Latitude label.

Overview “A trance masterpiece.” — The Wire After nearly ten years of swimming upstream through the sonic flotsam and jetsam, the folks have gotten freaky, noise is the ‘new noise’, and the No Neck Blues Band remains as relevant as ever. The group’s indoor/outdoor audio assaults in upper and lower Manhattan are the stuff of legend, but on Live at Ken’s Electric Lake the band took a distinct turn, crossed the Canadian border, and made a sudden diaspora to a rural retreat in the country for a full day’s session of acid-head tribal percussion clatter that is utterly different than anything they had put on the public record up to that time. Looser, groovier, and more in the communal hippie state of mind than ever, NNCK’s long out-of-print fifth release from 1998 ranks among the finest displays of tribal churn and choogle in the band’s thirteenyear history. Neo-dada attacks were swapped for psychedelic good vibrations, and midrange mystery for outdoor atmospherics. This is a peak communal groove moment for New York’s most enigmatic, longest-running experimental collective.

Overview “An enticing homemade album that used short sounds to create long ones. Flickering snippets of instruments overlap and accumulate to create restless but mellow collages that sound vaguely nostalgic.” — New York Times On the heels of last year’s celebrated Ceiling Songs, the debut full-length by Portland electronica musician Ethan Rose, comes Spinning Pieces, a collation of nearly five years of small edition art object releases produced for Locust Music. The aptly titled collection chronicles one man’s obsession with, and magical approach to, old mechanical noisemakers both large and small—from a carillon in California (“Singing Tower”) and the sounds of old player pianos in a dusty Portland piano shop (“The Dot & The Line”) to modified music boxes (“The Miniature & Sea”). Rose’s music exudes a deep compositional sense and inviting warmth that often eludes the cold and foreboding genre of electronics music.

Selling Points • Ethan Rose’s debut Ceiling Songs is the featured music in Gus Van Sant’s latest film Paranoid Park, which won the 60th Anniversary Prize at Cannes 2007 and should see domestic release in September 2007. • Ethan Rose is a member of post rock faves Small Sails. • Full radio and press campaign; articles will appear in several publications.

Overview “Ebbs and flows in the minimalist, ambient snorecore style of Windy & Carl, Stars of the Lid, Aarktica, et al … Recommended to fans of ambient snorecore, imaginary film soundtracks, Godspeed, Coil, Nurse With Wound, and the World Serpent crowd.” — Foxy Digitalis Transcontinental duo 230 Divisadero makes stately, finely crafted atmospheric songs that stand outside the bounds of contemporary musical trends. On their self-titled full-length debut, the duo of Britain’s Matt Shaw (Tex la Homa) and Monaco’s Nick Grey has produced one of the finest blends of Brian Eno-inspired art song heard in years. 230 Divisadero is simultaneously refreshing and reminiscent of classic acts like Talk Talk and New Zealand’s sterling This Kind of Punishment.

Overview Mambo Mange is the fourth and final album by a fine New York ensemble that unfortunately imploded at the peak of their game. Originally fronted by twin femme vocalists Lizzi Bougatsos (Gang Gang Dance) and celebrated visual artist Rita Ackerman, for the band’s final foray the duo enlisted Anders Nilsson (Aorta), Matt Heyner (NNCK), Dave Nuss (NNCK, Angkor Wat), and Brian DeGraw (Gang Gang Dance, Cranium). Ackermann’s Yoko Ono-inspired freakouts, feline growls, and orgasmic yodels combine with Bougatsos’s breathy, wordless space panting over Heyner’s seriously beefy power chords, Nilsson’s sinewy solos, DeGraw’s sass thump, and Nuss’s propulsive drumming to make the most thoroughly realized vision of Angelblood’s art + metal sound. Angelblood played decidedly out of bounds and ahead of the curve. It was a risky proposition to begin with (who can get by playing heavy metal in Chelsea art galleries?) but goddamn if this isn’t great music.

Awash in fuzz boxes and acid trips, the dozens of other groups from the psychedelic era bear little resemblance to Silmaril. Icarus captures the dark, achingly beautiful acid folk and Christianthemed psychedelic sounds that emanated from 1973’s privately pressed Given Time... Overview

Iraqi-American trumpeter Amir ElSaffar put his New York jazz career on hold six years ago to immerse himself in the Iraqi maqam, the music of his ancestors. Already an accomplished jazz and classical trumpeter—having performed with Cecil Taylor, Rudresh Mahanthappa, Vijay Iyer, and Daniel Barenboim—ElSaffar pursued masters who could impart the centuries-old oral tradition. He quickly became versed in the art and leads Safaafir, the only ensemble in the US performing Iraqi maqam. Now, ElSaffar has turned his attention back to jazz, approaching it with an Iraqi/Arabic bent. Two Rivers is an emotionally charged work that invokes ancient Iraqi musical traditions and frames them in a modern jazz setting. The compositions are based on Iraqi maqam melodies, each of which is believed to have a unique spiritual essence. These rich melodies are set to heavy grooves, free-jazz ensemble playing, and multi-layered sound textures. ElSaffar’s compositions are some of the first in jazz to make use of Arabic modality and its non-western tunings. To this end, both he and alto saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa have developed techniques for playing these pitches on the trumpet and saxophone, instruments that are typically only capable of playing Western tunings. The result is a cross-pollination of sound in which the languages of ancient and modern, East and West, blend together seamlessly.

Press Quotes “A virtuoso on the horn … expanding the vocabulary of the trumpet and the modern jazz ensemble.” — All About Jazz “When he picked up the trumpet … he was playing in the quarter-tone scales of traditional maqam. But that seemed to be a small point—it wasn’t for effect or show, it was simply that he’d adapted his instrument to the needs of the music … beautiful.” — Dave Douglas “Harrowing to absorb, but full of as much beauty as pain.” — BBC World

Selling Points • Trumpeter Amir ElSaffar’s debut recording combines cutting-edge jazz with traditional Iraqi classical music. • ElSaffar is one of the few contemporary artists carrying on the classical Iraqi maqam tradition. He is the leader of Safaafir, the only American group performing the maqam, and has been featured by BBC Radio, NPR’s Morning Edition, and the New York Times. • Features fiery alto saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa, recent recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and leader of two sessions for Pi Recordings. • Pi Recordings will do a full press and radio mailing as well as a targeted online campaign. • Ads with Down Beat, All About Jazz, and JazzTimes.

Quintessential British pop laced with Delta blues. Orchestral oddities that evoke the strange offspring of John Barry and Bernard Herman, with Ry Cooder joining in the dark side of Sgt. Pepper. As if Syd Barrett undertook the soundtrack of Night of the Hunter. The elusive Kim Fahy presents himself as the Edgar Allan Poe of pop, offering disconcerting tales of longing set against a backdrop of shimmering guitars and unusual orchestral arrangements. Comprised of an international revolving cast of players, the mystery that is The Mabuses continues. Geography often dictates their lineup, and Mabused brings us contributions from the California, London, Paris, and New York chapters. Picking up where previous Rough Trade and Shimmy Disc recordings left off, Mabused doesn’t answer questions so much as cast doubt on previously held notions. Each song seems designed to be an episode in the life of minds crammed with a vast and puzzling array of worlds and outlooks. Dreamy and sometimes nightmarish locations house weird and wonderful tales—as close to a British equivalent of Frank’s Wild Years as there’s ever been!

Press Quotes “Supremely idealistic pop, cut according to the belief that the form should entice, baffle, and ruffle rather than provide a readily assimilable template … A delicious cornucopia.” — CMJ “Sounds like Magical Mystery Tour melted by Salvador Dali. It is a brisk stroll through an English garden of pop where around every corner lurks hints of Hitchcock, as well as mad barber, car crashes, gibbons, and lifeboats. A very seductive world indeed.” — Los Angeles Reader “Full of that oddly eccentric British humor and invention coupled with the strict harmonies and twin jangly guitar interplay of the Fifth Dimension-era Byrds. It’s an amazing display of musical craftsmanship and twisted off-center poetry.” — Players

Selling Points • Infectious, eclectic music the likes of which no one has ever heard! • Members include John Carruthers (Clock DVA, Siouxie & The Banshees) and Chris Wilson (Love Spit Love, Lloyd Cole), among other luminaries. • The Mabuses’ first release in twelve years! Overview

Pietro Amato: French horn, trumpet, singing, screams, delays, Wurlitzer, bass synth, electric harpsichord, Hammond organ, tambourines, xylophone Mathieu Charbonneau: Wurlitzer, analog, synths, Hammond organ, electric harpsichord, Rhodes, melodica, shakers, tambourines, singing, faders Julien Poissant: drums, distorted harpsichord, tambourines, cabasa, BBQ grill, xylophone, singing, shakers, Hammond, Wurlitzer, open Rhodes.

Torngat is a formidable trio hailing from the fertile and diverse musical community of Montreal. Up until now, the band has enjoyed success in a few key cities, but with You Could Be things are about to change! This is the band’s third recording, a follow-up to 2005’s stellar La Rouge EP. The band has managed to sell through multiple pressings of its previous two recordings despite the fact that they were self-released, thanks in part to extensive touring. Torngat features the French horn playing of Pietro Amato, who is a member of Belle Orchestre and has toured and recorded extensively with Arcade Fire. Equally central to Torngat’s sound are the keyboards and synths of Mathieu Charbonneau, as well as weighty percussion and drumming courtesy of Julien Poissant. The band performs music that could be called post rock, but like sister band Belle Orchestre, Torngat’s music is less dark and melancholic than post rock. Instead of doom and gloom, the band delivers uplifting melodies and fantasy-inspired passages—yet still manages to infuse the songs with a certain emotional weight. The music evokes that of Tom Waits or fellow Canadian songsmith Patrick Watson. You Could Be offers twelve instrumental selections that gently take the listener on a whimsical journey. The album was impeccably recorded and mixed, with a distinct ’70s feel that is incredibly warm and lush. Torngat will tour heavily in support of this release, and a video is currently in the works.

Press quotes “French horn, keyboards, and drums can hold infinite possibilities, as this Montreal trio aptly demonstrates. Pietro Amato (Bell Orchestre, occasionally Arcade Fire), Mathieu Charbonneau, and Julien Poissant also juggle dueling melodicas, percussion, and an arsenal of effects to create captivating soundscapes and compositions that unexpectedly flowered into dance beats by the set’s conclusion. Can Montreal fit another spellbinding instrumental band inside the city walls? Absolutely.” — Exclaim “Perhaps it’s too early for grand proclamations about Torngat but what the hell … Moody and spirited, this EP contains patient songs, comfortable enough in their own skins to make impressions on their own terms … a tastefully lush document of mature players allowing songs to find their own path and being rewarded for trusting their instincts.” — Echo Weekly “Torngat are a three-piece who employ French horn, melodion, xylophone, Wurlitzer, analog synth, drums, and trumpet to create music to truly lose yourself in. Nothing is forced, the timing is perfect, and the melodies are complex.” — Ottawa Express “Imagine the most joyous moments of the Rachel’s oeuvre fused with the accessibility of Belle & Sebastian’s most spellbinding melodies. In terms of the excitement in the room and the amazed response of the crowd, it was everything Godspeed You! Black Emperor used to be, minus the politics and pretense.” — Splendid

Selling Points • Torngat features Pietro Amato, who has performed and recorded extensively with Arcade Fire and is a member of Belle Orchestre. • US tour in support of the release. • College radio mailing. Overview

Sean Madigan Hoen: vocals, guitar, piano Derek Grant: drums Josh Machniak: bass Dave Graw: percussion Dave Feeny: lap steel

Full of medicated and paranoid melancholy, The Liquor Witch was recorded in studios and hotels across the country. Sean Madigan Hoen is a longtime outcast of music subculture, having performed with Thoughts of Ionesco and The Holy Fire before stumbling into an elusive “solo” career. The Liquor Witch borders on eclectic but ultimately brings together hallucinatory, effected guitars with an almost neo-folk undertone. Fans of The National, Nick Cave, My Morning Jacket, or even Roy Orbison might find comfort in the strange and darkly beautiful musical yarn here. There is a lot going on, but ultimately Hoen’s consistent reaching for the hyper-sincere and the transcendent seems noble enough to win over even the most jaded listener. In the end, this is a drearily sensitive, and at times absurd, puzzle. Alkaline Trio’s Derek Grant joins Hoen on two songs—an unlikely but ultimately rewarding pairing—and as a whole the work is uncompromising, approaching the more beautiful outskirts of art.

Press Quotes “A must see.” — New York Press “This writer may have found a new favorite songwriter.” — Copper Press “Sean Madigan Hoen takes as much from Neil Diamond as he does from The Cure, and that’s a good thing.” — Real Detroit Weekly

Some things are just meant to be. Birds were born to fly, politicians were born to lie, and Carolyn Mark was born to make music. Ever since she first took the stage as Templeton the rat in her elementary school’s musical version of Charlotte’s Web, show business has been the main driving force in Mark’s life. After coming to the obvious conclusion that musicians were much more fun to hang around with than actors, she formed her first band, all-girl surf-twang popsters The Vinaigrettes. It was the beginning of a love affair with music, musicians, and the road that that has lasted over fifteen years. Nothing Is Free, described by Mark as her “woodsy, introspective album,” was recorded by Myke Hall at Beaver Point Hall in British Columbia. Along for the ride were guitar and bass virtuoso Paul Pigat (Cousin Harley), guitar and mandolin heavyweight Paul Rigby (Neko Case), expert vocalist Emilie Rhone (Fishing Derby, Antler), and vivacious violinist and vocalist Diona Davies (Po’ Girl, Geoff Berner, ESL). Additional help was ably rendered by Allison Russell and Awna Teixeira of Po’ Girl, and the mythical Calvin Dick (Neckbeard).

Overview “Together for a scant three years,Victoria indie trio Immaculate Machine sounds remarkably cohesive and fearlessly energetic … With guitarist Brooke Gallupe and drummer Luke Kozlowski switching off vocal duties with able-voiced keyboardist Kathryn Calder, the he said/she said dynamic makes for a charming listen.” — Eye Weekly Since the release of Mint Records debut Ones and Zeros, Immaculate Machine has taken on a relentless touring schedule, playing for audiences in the UK, France, Holland, Canada, and the US. Immaculate Machine recently spent some time living in Montreal, and Brooke Gallupe received a degree in French Literature at the University of Victoria. During this time, an impulsive feeling struck the band members, who decided to reinterpret some of the songs from Ones and Zeros. Choosing the songs to reinterpret proved to be an interesting experience for the band. Initially there were some musical hurdles to be dealt with, and having to change the vocal structures to accommodate the translation led to the introduction of some new musical styles. This changed some of the songs into more laid-back performances—even a hint of lounge in some cases! The result is Les Uns Mais Pas Les Autres, an imaginative take on some of Immaculate Machine’s existing songs that takes the familiar chords of live show favorites such as “Broken Ship” and “So Cynical” and turns them into new experiences both musically and linguistically.

Selling Points • French versions of songs from Immaculate Machine’s debut Ones and Zeros. • Lead singer Kathryn Calder also performs in the New Pornographers. • Follows publicity and marketing campaign for June 2007 release Fables.

Mint Records is happy to be queuing up at the vinyl plant once again for the release of a double A-side single from The Awkward Stage and Young and Sexy. First up is “The Awkward Stage” by the band of the same name, a solid song from the Heaven Is For Easy Girls sessions that serves as a reminder that we are never far from our awkward and painful youth. The flip side features longtime Mint artists Young and Sexy, who are currently making preparations to record their next full-length. “Hello Sonny,” an unreleased song from the sessions for the band’s Mint debut Stand Up For Your Mother, is a classic break-up song full of vocal interplay between Lucy Brain and Paul Pittman.

Selling Points • These two previously unavailable recordings available in a limited edition of 500 copies with artwork by each band. • The Awkward Stage will tour the US in September 2007.

Overview

One Woman Show captures Nick Krgovich, perhaps best known to many as the driving force behind the acclaimed groups P:ano and Burquitlam Plaza, in an interesting moment. These three songs were initially recorded as an experiment in pop music: Krgovich felt the need to come to some sort of conclusion about varied recording techniques by writing songs with conventional chord progressions and willfully obscuring them with dark reverb, implying rhythm rather than using a pronounced beat.

Selling Points • Upcoming tour dates with Casiotone for the Painfully Alone. • Nick Krgovich is the singer and songwriter of acclaimed group P:ano. • Limited pressing of 500 copies.

The debut album from Strings of Consciousness, an ensemble made up of nine members hailing from Marseille via London, Paris, and Chicago. Using a manifesto of uniting acoustic instrumentation and human sensibility with digital technology, the group was able to draft many talented musicians from across the globe via the internet. Narration is key to Our Moon is Full, which features outstanding vocal contributions from honorary ensemble members J.G.Thirlwell (Foetus, Steroid Maximus), Barry Adamson, Eugene Robinson (Oxbow), Scott McCloud (Girls Against Boys), Pete Simonelli (Enablers), Black Sifichi, and Lisa Smith-Klossner. A collection of several twists and turns, the album immediately sets a sunlit scene of abstraction before taking the listener on an aural and visual adventure through (occasionally twisted) soul-bearing confession, pent-up rock, and raw emotion.

Selling Points • Debut from this French collective follows two highly sought-after limited vinyl singles. • Features outstanding vocal performances from J.G.Thirlwell (Foetus), Scott McCloud, Eugene Robinson (Oxbow), Barry Adamson, Pete Simonelli (Enablers), Black Sifichi, and Lisa Smith-Klossner. • Housed in a deluxe limited edition digipak complete with twelve-page booklet. • SOC is the only artist to feature a new composition on the highly acclaimed My Brightest Diamond remix album Tear It Down. • Full print, internet, and radio campaign by Massive Music USA. • Ads with The Wire, Pitchfork, and Drowned In Sound.

Overview “Newman unravels the rudimentary basics of his technique into some beautifully hypnotic spools, combining tough solo conceptions in the mode of John Fahey with some group-thing and a few deeply psychedelic tone poems. This is the real deal.” – The Wire Of the players involved in the recent resurgence of fingerstyle guitar, Harris Newman has established himself as a primary envoy on the modern day steel-stringer shortlist. Following up the critically acclaimed Accidents with Nature and Each Other, Newman unveils his third album Decorated, yet another beautiful, forward-thinking take on the steel-string sound. Extracting elements of folk and blues and exposing them bare, Harris Newman dresses up his music in cinematic “post-rock” attire. Decorated is accessible solo guitar music for the experimentally minded, illustrating why Newman’s take on the tradition sets him apart from the pack.

Selling Points • Harris Newman is all over the Montreal music scene: a member of Triple Burner (with Bruce Cawdron of Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Beckie Foon of A Silver Mt. Zion) and Constellation recording artists Sackville, he can be found on recordings by Hrsta and Esmerine. • Appeared on the seminal Imaginational Anthems Vol. 1 compilation alongside Jack Rose, John Fahey, Max Ochs, Glenn Jones, Harry Taussig, and more. • RIYL: John Fahey, Sandy Bull, Jack Rose, Gastr del Sol. • Limited edition LP pressed on high-quality Czech vinyl. • Full press mailing to blogs and e-zines as well as folk- and guitar-oriented magazines. • College radio mailing by AAM Sunday Service.

Overview “Authentic hippie jams, like those whipped up by the Massachusetts collective Sunburned Hand of the Man, operate like ritual magick … Only serious students of psychedelia carefully craft freely flowing pointillist fretwork recalling Garcia’s bluegrass picking and Creem-of-Clapton garage fuzz. Only true citizens of the universe then weave these strings through rhythms distilled from field recordings of ancient African and Middle Eastern cultures, as well as the Allman Brothers’ Live at the Fillmore East.” — SF Weekly Sunburned Hand of the Man is a band in the loose sense of the word; it’s better described as a banner under which a collective of musical freaks have gathered. So when the group toured Europe in September 2006 and ended up in the same room as psych/Kraut/hard rockers Circle in Finland, they decide to jam together and record all of it. This session was edited down to a total of forty minutes, which wanders through free folk, psych, improv, spaced-out hippie jamming, and noise-rock bizarreness. The collaboration of America and Finland’s weirdest is nothing less than sensational!

Selling Points • Sunburned’s Michael Flower is a founding member of the UK’s Vibracathedral Orchestra and one of the Flower-Corsano duo. • Circle members also play in Pharaoh Overlord. • Sunburned Hand of the Man has released records on Wabana, Very Friendly, Ecstatic Peace, Manhand, Eclipse, Three Lobed, and more. Overview “Kicking off with an ambient bed of guitar drone and feedback, the band soon veers off into several directions at once, embracing atmospheric soundscapes, industrial noise, classical string pieces, and some very captivating guitar melodies.” — BBC.co.uk This is the debut EP from Maninkari. Operating out of Paris, this band is going to be high priority for Conspiracy Records. The label was awestruck upon receiving the first demos, and decided to recruit Justin Broadrick (Final, Techno Animal, Godflesh, Jesu) and Robin Rimbaud (Scanner, Githead) to do a remix of two amazing Maninkari pieces. The result is a very cinematic, mesmerizing, warm piece of music. Limited to 1,000 copies, this is a nice introduction to a new band whose debut full-length is scheduled for release in late 2007.

Overview Acid Mothers Guru Guru features Mani Neumeier from legendary, influential German Krautrock group Guru Guru as well as Kawabata Makoto and Atsushi Tsuyama from Japan’s holy Acid Mothers Temple. The result is a fiery, fantasy-filled, loud/soft trans-generational psychedelic collaboration. Acid Mothers Guru Guru started with a spontaneous session in March 2006 in Nagoya, Japan. When the improvisation commenced, the passionate excitement was clear to all in the room, and it was then that this special psychedelic trio began. A Japanese tour was planned, an album was recorded, and this recording is the fruit of this mutual musical admiration. While all involved will admit that this is a dream collaboration, it was the Acid Mothers Temple guys who worshipped Guru Guru in their teens. Psychedelic Navigator features two generations of psychedelic rock joining forces for the twenty-first century. Overview Julia Kent left Rasputina in 1999, after releasing two albums on Columbia, and shortly thereafter became a member of Antony & The Johnsons. She played on and contributed string arrangements to the group’s Mercury Prize-winning record I Am a Bird Now; has toured Europe, North America, and Australia; played at Carnegie Hall and the Royal Albert Hall; and appeared on numerous television shows, including the Late Show with David Letterman, Friday Night with Jonathan Ross, and the BBC’s Newsnight. In addition to her ongoing participation in Antony & The Johnsons, she has also performed and/or recorded with Angels of Light, Burnt Sugar, Larsen, Angela McCluskey, Leona Naess, Teddy Thompson, Devendra Banhart, Mi and L’au, and Rufus Wainwright. Julia Kent’s debut solo effort, Delay, is a CD of multi-tracked cello and found sounds. It was inspired by the transitory nature of airports, and by the private emotional worlds that we create amid the disorientations and disjunctions of travel. Delay was recorded over the course of a year (or so) in between touring. After so many years of playing with other people, Kent felt that it was time to do something entirely on her own. As a result, she is the sole composer/performer on all tracks. The title refers to the effect, to traveling, and to the fact that the album took so long to record. It also pays homage to Arthur Russell’s World of Echo, a masterpiece of externalizing the intimate.

Lisa Cameron is a drummer and percussionist from Austin with whom Tom Carter has played in the past. She creates exquisite noise by vibrating snares and cymbals with feedback. Sky City is psychedelic space music with all atoms free to interact. Robert Horton’s homemade inventions, Tom Carter’s lyrical e-bow guitar lines, Lee Ann Cameron’s walking-on-the-moon vocals, and Lisa Cameron’s vibration of material planes: Sun Ra’s ark and Neil Young’s arc put through a digital blender and reconstituted for space travel.

Sketches is an absolutely sacred collage of rare field recordings, tribal music, heavy drumming, dreamlike nature sounds, and even an electrical generator in Thailand that inspired Neumeier in the middle of the night many years ago. Overview “Mos Generator would definitely be able to bump and grind with other stoner rock luminaries such as Kyuss, Fu Manchu, and Black Sabbath, but still come off like their own monster with a new set of teeth.” — NWXSW Connections Born from the ashes of a scene that promised the second coming of Deep Purple and Black Sabbath but delivered only watered-down bar bands and radio-friendly alt rock, scene veterans Shawn Johnson (ex-Mindfunk), Scooter Haslip (ex-Voodoo Gearshift), and Tony Reed (exTreepeople, Goodbye Harry) felt the instinctual need to strip down to the basics of hard rock. Their Small Stone debut, Songs for Future Gods, virtually oozes sludge through your speakers when first played. The rhythms are tight, and Reed’s guitar playing has grown all the more explosive. The fact is, Mos Generator plays kick-ass, honest, old school heavy rock ‘n’ roll. With hilarious party jams about driving trucks and making friends with Indians, American Sheriff turns the wacky to level eleven. Overview

Crystal Castles/HEALTH marks HEALTH’s first release on Lovepump United and features two new songs from Toronto eight-bit glitch duo Crystal Castles. Both bands have been extraordinarily busy this past year, with HEALTH relentlessly touring and self-recording their debut full-length, and Crystal Castles remixing everyone from Bloc Party to Liars and Klaxons. In the middle of all of this, the two bands somehow found time for each other, and for Lovepump United, and for you!

HEALTH recorded its debut full-length in one of the band’s favorite places—The Smell, an all-ages venue in downtown Los Angeles. The members also went out and found equipment born the same time as The Smell, mostly ribbon microphones designed by the BBC for radio broadcasts in the 1930s, stuff George Martin liked to use, and other things they didn’t even know existed. The album boasts eleven songs in less than thirty minutes—new music with old sounds.
