In the mid-1980s a young, hungry Pato Banton was making noise in the UK as an integral part of the move to establish a vital reggae culture in the European nation. After rehearsals and shows around the UK and Europe, and a classic Mad Professor collaboration already under his belt, Banton went on to record his second album, Never Give In. It remains his best-selling album to date, and the most celebrated by the numerous American musicians who have come to proclaim him among their greatest influences. The Beastie Boys famously sampled his lyrics on their Paul’s Boutique record, and Queen Latifah’s biggest hit, “U.N.I.T.Y.”, was a direct interpolation of his original lyrics as well. Everyone from Sublime to Jack Johnson and Damian Marley, as well as countless others, continues to hold Pato Banton in the highest regard. After years of chart success and continuous touring, Banton decided to step away from the music business and continue on his path of “Positivity.” In the comfort of his own home studio, he acquired the help of longtime friend and top producer Paul Horton to record his tenth album, Life is a Miracle, which gained a Grammy nomination and clearly defined the lyrical, musical, and spiritual growth of this outstanding artist. Now, Pato Banton has gained back the rights to his masterpiece Never Give In, and has selected independent reggae-loving SoCal label Cornerstone Recording Arts Society to re-release a 20 th anniversary edition of the gem, with updated special packaging and bonus tracks. And, with great enthusiasm, Banton continues to tour relentlessly, backed by the Mystic Roots Band (voted Top Reggae Band by the Los Angeles Music Awards). 2007 dates with Matisyahu, 311, Michael Franti & Spearhead, and The Wailers are fine examples of the clout this legend carries, and signs of where his triumphant return is headed.

Overview “The Clutters clearly revel in making fun, rebellious, and catchy rock songs … it’s hard not to get onboard, and immediately chime in.” — NPR The Clutters grew organically out of a garage in Nashville. Their sound is vintage, hooky, and more than anything, fun. On their second long-player, The Clutters sound like a polished ’70s rock ‘n’ roll act—poised to rock your face off or destroy a hotel room. Like Tennessee colleagues Kings of Leon, The Clutters produce raucous and catchy tunes appropriate for running from the cops, bar fighting, breaking out of jail, or similar illicit activity. Thunderous guitar and drums are bolstered by controlled-angst vocals. Antique keyboard sounds outline hooky melodies. The raw, country-tinged tracks on Don’t Believe a Word will undoubtedly be the most fun listening experience you’ve had in ages. Any critic who has recently etched the words “rock ‘n’ roll is dead” has yet to hear the classic sound of The Clutters.
Selling Points • One of the most renowned acts of the burgeoning Nashville indie rock scene. • The track “Fire” is featured on Camel’s The Farm compilation. Factory Records released Durutti Column’s debut album, The Return of the Durutti Column, in 1979. Produced by Martin Hannett, this edgy, primitive LP showcased Vini Reilly’s “honey wrapped in sandpaper” guitar playing and set the tone for twenty years of meditative and fearless music. Reilly has drawn on influences as diverse as Fats Waller and heavy metal, experimented with samplers and chamber music, and collaborated with other Manchester luminaries such as Morrissey and Peter Hook (New Order). The album opens with the gorgeous “Better Must Come,” which is built around a sample from an African hip-hop track that, in turn, is based on an old Jamaican children’s song. The nine-minute “Please Let Them Sleep” is one of the album’s most ambitious tracks, opening with Spanish guitar before twisting into a bleakly observational mood, while the closing “That Blows My Name Away” was written for Reilly’s girlfriend. One of the album’s highlights, “Gathering Dust,” was co-written with Poppy Roberts, who will be performing many of the songs live when the band tour later this year.

Overview “Quirky indie-pop … a handful of rockers that bristle with raucous post-Guided By Voices abandon.” — Pittsburgh Post-Gazette [HHHH] A ringing attribute of Jim Willingham’s songwriting is that it manages to be exuberant and highminded all at once. Combining the terse acoustic propulsion of the late-model Feelies with the breezy, half-stoned-on-the-beach pop ambiance of Dean Wareham’s Luna, Willingham brings distinctive Athenian warmth to The Captain’s Table. There are horn charts and string sections, burst veins of Link Wray-ish guitar play, pastoral keyboard drones, tremulous bits of Hawaiian slackkey guitar, and some country-fried saunter up under the rhythm section. Chiefly, though, there’s that friendly storytelling voice—half-sung, half-spoken—that escorts the listener through broken waltzes, atmospheric ballads, and jittery rockers. For his first Orange Twin release, Willingham HAM1 recruited a couple of longstanding Elephant Six luminaries: former Olivia Tremor Control member Eric Harris, Pete Erchick, Jacob Morris, and Chris Sugiuchi make key contributions The Captain’s Table to the disc. Andy Baker’s shimmering, vibrant production serves each song with minimal intrusion, Genre: Alt Rock Label: Orange Twin Records lending an airy, informal atmosphere that makes for rewarding repeated listening. Overview “After Tulsa’s set a couple of weeks ago upstairs at the Middle East, we weren’t the only ones who walked out of the club convinced that we had just seen the best rock band in Boston. Their combination of songwriting and musicianship and an eargasm of sound rendered jaws unfunctional.” — Boston Phoenix Tulsa took its name from a book of photographs by Larry Clark, whose pictures seem to be largely about a group of people who have a hard time maintaining their curiosity for life. And that’s the intent of Tulsa’s songs—staying hungry for life. I Was Submerged is the first Tulsa release to find its way into the physical world (i.e. not a digital release). As comforting and timeless as the songs are, they retain a melodic eeriness that could leave the listener feeling unsettled were they not so impeccably crafted. A dreamy concoction of reverberated vocals and sepulchral guitars layered Tulsa upon fervent percussion and the defining touch: the asymmetrical tones of a Fender Rhodes, which I Was Submerged cascade throughout the recordings. It’s often the Neutral Milk Hotel or Neil Young tag that is Genre: Alt Rock pinned to Tulsa’s sleeve, and they won’t deny that. But there’s actually much more that they try to accomplish. If there’s a middle ground between the Carter Family and Can, Tulsa has discovered it. BEVEL is the solo project of Via Nuon, a Chicago-based artist who employs a uniquely literary approach to the music he creates. A contributor to Edith Frost and Simon Joyner, and a member of the groups Drunk and Manishevitz, Nuon executes his dreamlike psych-folk with the care and fragility of a cartographer. Phoenician Terrane, BEVEL’s first release for Contraphonic, is an album of densely orchestrated American wonder. This is the Great American Songbook as discovered by the descendants of Harry Partch and Charles Ives upon a rock in the sand. Languidly plucked guitar lines pave trails amongst violin and flute embellishments, and transient Gypsy-laden tones swash about warm synthesizers, with everything cast in a soft, psychedelic haze. Assembled with a cast of contributors featuring members of Califone. Boxhead Ensemble, and Manishevitz, Phoenician Terrane is BEVEL’s finest work to date.

Morning Recordings returns with its second full-length, The Welcome Kinetic, which finds the Pramod Tummala-led ensemble (now including The Coctails’ Barry Phipps as vocalist and multi-instrumentalist) eschewing the intimate monotones of the first record in favor of a broader aural palette. Dub-inflected Latin, underwater Bachrach-ian pop, waltz-time sound collage, and warped ’70s funk are all rendered with a balladeer’s touch. Drag City artist Edith Frost joins the group to sing on three of the tracks, including the bewitching lead vocal on “Songs from a Hotel Bar.” Utilizing a talented group of musicians and eclectic instrumentation (vibraphone, pianos, cellos, horns, tape machine, acoustic and electric bowed metal, upright bass, Japanese table harp, and field recordings), Morning Recordings has created a work that is sonically bold and sweepingly cinematic.
Press Quotes “A time machine to 1975 AM-radio-pop nirvana. Pramod Tummala has a honeyed drawl that’s an ethereal instrument all its own.” — Magnet “A warm base of guitars, bass, and slowly clocking drums is fleshed out with airy touches of piano, vibraphone, Rhodes, and strings … the result is a gentle lushness. Tummala’s vocals are welcoming and soothing, a match for the Sunday evening serenity of the album’s mood.” — Punk Planet “Mellow music for laid-back lovers.” — Insound “With sparse, gentle vocal melodies that evoke the ghost of Elliott Smith on top of intricate but subdued instrumental arrangements, Tummala succeeds in creating a record that is both relaxing and compelling, sort of like Iron & Wine but with organs and harmonium instead of acoustic guitars.” — Pop Culture Press “Another notable chapter in Chicago’s post-rock scene opus.” — Chicago Free Press

Nadja Radiance of Shadows Genre: Avant Rock/Metal Label: Alien8 Recordings CD: ALI 72 Price Code: Q NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA
Featured Artists Overview
Aidan Baker: guitars, piano, flute, vocals, drum machines Leah Buckareff: bass, vocals
Canadian ambient doom band Nadja returns with Radiance of Shadows, the follow-up to the critically acclaimed Touched. Radiance of Shadows is a mammoth monster of an album, spanning well over an hour with three tracks that are more epic and heavier than ever. Nadja’s constantly increasing fan base will not be disappointed with this outing; it’s classic Nadja. Radiance of Shadows has the feel of the super-saturated, dense recordings favored by the likes of Fennesz and Tim Hecker, but with the bite of metal. Nadja is one of the most respected outsider metal projects, with two previous releases on Alien8 Recordings, as well as Body Cage on Profound Lore and a number of limited edition offerings on labels such as Archive, Equation, and Conspiracy. Radiance of Shadows opens rather gently, taking its time to give birth to an amazing ISIS-like riff that becomes completely washed out by Nadja’s trademark wall of ambient noise. Just when you think it cannot get any louder or more saturated, it begins to subside into another subdued section of ambience and occasional riffing. This eventually gives way to a brutal tandem of guitar and drums that recalls early Swans. The band recently completed a small European tour with Troum and, in the past, has performed with artists such as ISIS, Tim Hecker, Ocean, Fear Falls Burning, and Bloody Panda. The band plans to continue supporting their recorded output with live shows and touring whenever possible.
Press Quotes “Toronto duo Nadja—drone explorer Aidan Baker and bassist Leah Buckareff—may be the best band in the world doing something exciting right now with Jesu/Godflesh/Napalm Death/etc.” — Pitchfork “Toronto duo Nadja play ambient doom that channels My Bloody Valentine more than My Dying Bride. But despite the obvious similarities with Jesu’s shoegazy organ sounds and drum machinery, Nadja have evolved in their own right.” — Decibel “With enough subterranean dirge to please a room of Sunn O))) fanboys, Nadja are a Toronto-based duo (Aidan Baker & Leah Buckareff) who delight in the kind of debased and caliginous excursions which match shoegaze aesthetics to a rimy style which can’t help but evoke the spectre of Earth et al.” — Boomkat

CPC Gangbangs Mutilation Nation Genre: Alt Rock/Garage Label: Alien8 Recordings LP: ALI 73 Price Code: Q NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA
Announcing the vinyl edition of CPC Gangbangs’ killer debut Mutilation Nation! CPC Gangbangs rose from the ashes of garage punk architects Les Sexareenos, Daylight Lovers, and Spaceshits to create a new punk weirdo hate trip that spews forth from the Franco-Anglo petri dish of Montreal. With five vinyl-only EPs under its belt, CPC Gangbangs has solidified its status in the subterranean abyss that is the new punk underground railroad. Although the band’s sound is celebratory and consuming, it is often full of the promise of self-destruction boosted by copious amounts of cocaine, LSD, and Canadian Maple Whiskey. This sound is part Warsaw, part 13th Floor Elevators, part Flamin’ Groovies, part Turkish psychedelic rock, and part primal punk deconstruction. Guitars are broken, amps are on fire, drums avalanche off the stage, and someone gets hurt. It’s no wonder that Vice, Horizontal Action, Victim of Time, and other fine institutions that promote reckless, irresponsible action hail CPC Gangbangs as the best value for your money when it comes to wildly entertaining, subversive rock ‘n’ roll. Never has the sound of something falling apart sounded so perfect.

Overview For the past twelve years or so, KEXP Radio in Seattle has broadcast Sonarchy Radio, a special one-hour program comprised solely of music recorded live in the studio at Jack Straw Productions. With the focus being “new music and sound art made by Pacific Northwest artists,” the concept of capturing the musicians raw in a studio setting for the intent of radio broadcast has resulted in some one-of-a-kind moments. Saxophonist Wally Shoup, inspired by his collaboration with avant guitarist extraordinaire Nels Cline (Wilco, Nels Cline Singers/Trio, Scarnella) and Chris Corsano (today collaborating with Bjork, among others), wrestled Cline up to the Emerald City for the Earshot Jazz Fest in 2005, and brought in percussionist Greg Campbell—who Cline had admired very much—for the ride. In the span of twenty-four hours, they managed to play the fest, an in-store at Tower Records (RIP), and a session for Sonarchy. The results are now immortalized in vinyl as Suite: Bittersweet, a breathtaking document of this fantastic trio in full flight.
Selling Points • Nels Cline is the lead guitarist for Wilco, was a member of Geraldine Fibbers, leads his own Nels Cline Singers, and has collaborated with such folks as Thurston Moore, Mike Watt, Carla Bozulich, and dozens more. • Wally Shoup is an underground jazz mainstay. Overview “Splintered, jumpy, incessantly quick-changing noise-hardcore.” — New York Times Sounds documents the improvisational side of XBXRX. Over the past decade, the band has built a reputation for singularly high-energy live performances and a commitment to pushing the limits of rock music forms, and Sounds is the next step in this progression. Through the years, improvisation has been a major part of the XBXRX live show, but it has remained unrecorded until now. This album features seven improvisations of distinctive character and mood, ranging from frenzied storms of white noise to pointillist chamber music. XBXRX has constantly toured the US since 1999, and tours are scheduled through 2007. The band has garnered a strong profile in recent years through its association with Polyvinyl Records, who released the acclaimed albums Sixth In Sixes (2005) and Wars (2007). Sounds will definitely appeal to those attracted to the experimental aspects of XBXRX, and reconfirms the band’s long-running solidarity with the noise scene. Also available in a limited edition LP pressed in an edition of 500 copies with 100 on yellow vinyl and 100 on green vinyl.

Overview “Having emerged from a fairly lengthy period of obscurity, LSD March’s psychedelic credentials are not in question.” — Dusted Constellation of Tragedy is the sixth full-length album from Japan’s LSD March, often described as a cross between the Velvet Underground and Les Rallizes Denudes. Constellation of Tragedy is their most well recorded and refined album to date, coming to a climactic close and featuring leader Shinsuke Michishita playing guitar, theremin, musical box, bass, harmonium, and harmonica. Recorded by Richard Horner at Snowflake Sound in Sapporo, Japan. Cover artwork by Darryl Norsen.

Overview “The group’s sound runs from massively distended nod-outs that recall parts of the first Fushitsusha album through weird duo tracks that orbit a parallel universe where late-period John Fahey was the prime influence on Charalambides, infernal Dead C/Gate style guitar abuse, and achingly beautiful comedown ballads … Simply one of the greatest out-of-nowhere groups to come out of the Tokyo underground in years and the undisputed stars of PSF’s recent Tokyo Flashback 5 compilation.” — Volcanic Tongue
Shishou No Fune The Shining Star Live Genre: Rock Label: Important Records CD: IPT 165 Price Code: P NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA
Suishou No Fune was formed in 1999 by guitarists Pirako Kurenai and Kageo. They were quickly acknowledged in Japan for their unique take on Japanese psychedelic traditions, but it wasn’t until their inclusion on PSF’s Tokyo Flashback 5 that their international prominence began to grow. Heavy lyrical emotion transcends linguistic barriers, and Kurenai’s blown-out, fuzzy, free-dream guitar work resides in an alternate universe of psychedelic Japanese shoegaze. Awash in waves of fuzz, Suishou No Fune’s control of detail amidst chaos is their greatest asset. Here’s to the past. Here’s to the future. Somewhere between Fushitsusha and Windy & Carl there is Suishou No Fune.
Selling Points • Suishou No Fune has been active in the Japanese underground for the last eight years. With releases on Holy Mountain and Important, and compilation tracks released by PSF, awareness of the group has been surging. • Suishou No Fune has included members of Les Rallizes Denudes and has jammed with Keiji Haino and members of Kosokuya, Maher Shalal Hash Baz, and Che-Shizu. • Promotional mailing by Important Records. • Ads with The Wire.

Overview “‘Cool Love #1,’ an outtake from the sessions that spawned their forthcoming album, Wild Mountain Nation, stuffs three or four melodies into less than three minutes of breezy pop and backporch twang, racing through choruses, verses, and bridges at break-ass speed.” — Pitchfork Following on the heels of Blitzen Trapper’s wildly acclaimed Wild Mountain Nation album, Cool Love #1 collects four of the Nation’s most beloved outtakes. Ranging from blissed-out pop to epic country-rock and electro-bluegrass weirdness, all of these tracks are live favorites and have already received wide praise from blogs and websites far and wide.

Overview This is the fifth proper album from Portland’s Graves. The band revolves around songwriter Greg Olin’s unique vision, blending accessible, melodic songwriting with skewed lyrics, breezy arrangements, a mid-fi production aesthetic, and Olin’s earnest guy-next-door vocal delivery. On this outing, Graves spices up the mix with tints of soul, Latin, and Cambodian rock. Recorded with friends at Olin’s home studio, the album comfortably reflects Graves’ signature disheveled sound. There’s percussion in spades, pop-ballad female backups, and organ flourishes, but the secret weapon may be the cache of mellow grooves. The rhythm section hits an appealingly amateurish Motown stride and rides it through much of the track list. The band includes Cory Gray (Norfolk & Western, Desert City Soundtrack) and Nate Ashley (Left Handed, Knw-Yr-Own) as well as the usual smattering of Portland indie ninjas: Amanda Lawrence (Norfolk & Western, Loch Lomond), Kyle Field (Little Wings), Brian Wright, and Tommy McDonald.
Selling Points • Graves will be building momentum for this release with a September tour booked by Invisible Cities Booking. • Features multi-instrumentalist Cory Gray (Norfolk & Western, Desert City Soundtrack) as well as K Records artists Karl Blau (Laura Veirs) and Nate Ashley. • Full PR campaign servicing; service to over 250 blogs. • Full college radio mailing by AAM. • Ads with Daytrotter, Magnet, Venus, Under the Radar, Pitchfork, and Skyscraper.

The third official recording from Loch Lomond, Paper the Walls, could just as well be a debut. It is one of those rare albums that has the power to leave a deep imprint on the listener. Recorded at Portland’s Type Foundry with Adam Selzer (Norfolk & Western), and at Skyler Norwood’s (Point Juncture, WA) picturesque SE Washington studio, the album is rich with detail while retaining an uncommon sense of space. The songs have a pastoral quality; they are simple in form but saturated with tone and texture, conjuring a sense of wonder and bemusement. Long a popular fixture of the Portland music landscape, Loch Lomond finally has an album that matches the lush intensity of its live performances. This is a respected band that is gathering force to bring its gorgeous tidal waves of sound to a much wider audience.
Selling Points • Loch Lomond is utterly captivating onstage, selling out Portland’s mid-sized venues. • Features members of Norfolk & Western and Horsefeathers. • Loch Lomond, booked by Invisible Cities Booking, toured nationally in Spring 2007. • Full PR campaign servicing; service to over 250 blogs. • Full college radio mailing by AAM. • Ads with Daytrotter, Magnet, Venus, Under the Radar, Pitchfork, and Skyscraper.

Overview “edIT shows how to warm the blood of technological music, scissoring his way thru the math of sound.” — Gridface Enter the world of edIT, a pioneer in the world of glitch-hop music. He’s spent the last four years touring the world nonstop, exhibiting his signature sound of IDM-based hip-hop. Over the same time period, he’s been hard at work on Certified Air Raid Material, his sophomore opus of deafening proportions. Certified Air Raid Material is chock-full of dance floor anthems, with some of the most complicated drum chops and sample cuts you’ve ever heard. Once edIT finished the beats, he invited some of the world’s top underground rappers to join the party. The result: perhaps the most futuristic-sounding “hip-hop” album in history.

Overview “Maximized minimalism that encourages the listener to don the headphones and philosophize out.” — URB This is the second album in a series of three by ex-post-rock pioneers Jason Soares and JFRE “Robot” Coad. Ditching the guitars of their first two CDs, MIF2 acts as a bridge between the softer indie-electronic sound and the upcoming full-live-rock-band album MIF3. With bleeps and blips aplenty, MIF2 represents a more robotic and mechanical sound that evokes a futuristic vision of where music may one day be headed. For fans of Autechre, Steve Reich, AFX, Stockhausen, Monolake, Kraftwerk, ones, and zeroes.

Created in the late ’90s by three thirteen-year-old grunge addicts lost in the country, Headcases soon became a local UFO with its exacting noise pieces. Introducing more pop melodies and classical song structures, Headcases has the energy of ’90s Sub Pop bands as well as the spirit of Touch & Go or Dischord bands. The trio played with No Means No, Chokebore, The Paper Chase, and Q and Not U while composing the explosive tunes of Castaway But Blessed. It was spring in Chicago when the band entered Electrical Audio Studio with John Congleton to record these songs. Six days were enough for the three French rednecks to discover American junk food, junk wine, and non-alcoholic junk beer while putting a dozen titles on tape. And how to define Headcases’ music … Power post grunge? Noisy pop core? Post this? Pre that? Regardless, the trio plays good amplified music and hits the road with fury, all for the sake of rock ‘n’ roll.
Selling Points • US tours throughout 2007–2008. • Progressive songwriting with high energy and a great display of skill. • Beautiful digipak packaging. • Tracks will appear on several samplers including Magnet and Copper Press, as well as on an Ascetic sampler that will be inserted into 2000 copies of Alternative Press. • Press and radio publicity by Planetary Group. • Ads with Copper Press, Amplifier, Lollipop, and more.

Overview Before being crowned an alt country goddess, Neko Case was familiar to Mint fans from her drummin’ thunder in Maow. Here, she has stepped out from behind the kit and into the spotlight to release twelve amazing songs that stretch from out ‘n’ out hillbilly stompers to Loretta Lynn-like lovesick ballads. And, she has collected a jamboree of indie rock and bluegrass legends as her backing band, including Brian Connelly (Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet), Matt Murphy (Superfriendz), Carl Newman (Zumpano, Superconductor, New Pornographers), Rose Melberg (Softies, Tiger Trap), and Beez (Smugglers), among others.
Press Quotes “Neko Case wails with a remarkable intensity that merits all of the comparisons to the best work of the classic women of country music.” — Pitchfork “Comparing originals and covers becomes pointless in light of Case’s voice, a soaring Brenda Lee-ish instrument, which makes every song sound like something on a Nashville jukebox circa 1967.” — The Rocket “Her vocal bitch-slap completely demands your attention. From the moment she parts her lips, Case is Jeannie C. Riley, Rose Maddox, and Mae West all rolled into one glorious gal.” — New York Press
Selling Points • Debut solo recording from Neko Case, essential listening for any fan! • Features a “who’s who” of alt country and indie rock: members of The Softies, New Pornographers, Smugglers, Carolyn Mark, and Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet. • Includes some of Neko Case’s first traditional/alt country compositions.

Overview “Interviews are boring but Nardwuar pulls so much obscure shit out of his ass he makes them way more interesting than the guy he’s interviewing … Brilliant.” — Vice Only Vancouver, BC could produce a media personality like Nardwuar the Human Serviette— notorious for his interviews of celebrities and politicians. He has a way of thinking up unusual questions, and the fearlessness to ask them, even if he knows it’ll get him thrown out of the room. Overview
Josh Diamond: guitar Jason Diamond: bass John Bongiorno: drums, vocals Jim Starace: vocals
Puny Human has always been one of the staples of “heavy” in the Small Stone camp, but when the drummer’s seat emptied in late Summer 2004, the three remaining members were unsure about what to do with the band, and with themselves. Meanwhile, longtime Puny Human admirer and out-of-work drummer John Bongiorno had found himself in a similar position. Needless to say, neither side was looking forward to the agonizing and often humiliating prospect of finding new people with whom to play, but a casual encounter, a bit of conversation, and some comparing of notes later, the two parties decided to join together and make some noise … Puny Human style. Three years of marriage, baby making, career pursuits, and endless schedule conflicts will take their toll on a man (or four) and as a result, the new Puny Human is in full-on-rage mode on their new album, Universal Freak Out. This “Second Coming” of the band is stronger, more focused, and higher-octane than ever before. With the addition of Bongiorno, the group has reinvented itself as a band that cannot be pigeonholed. With equal parts Deep Purple and Devo, and a whole mess of in-your-face ass kicking, Universal Freak Out will feed the hunger of all famished heavy music fanatics.
Press Quotes “Stoner rock fans, here comes your latest reason to fog up the van: this NYC quartet will satiate all of your ‘needs’ with its thick ‘n’ heavy riffs, sludge-laden grooves, ridiculous lyrics, and a low-end that’ll blow the dust out of your favorite bong.” — Splendid “Places them quite a few notches above the legion of stoner outfits currently doing the rounds by virtue of impressive musicianship, outstanding production, and an epic sense of ambition.” — Rocksound

Wrong Meetings compiles eighteen tracks from Wrong Meeting and Wrong Meeting II, previously only released in limited collector’s formats, plus two new exclusive remixes! With elements of garage and rockabilly, but also the more familiar layer of electronica, this double album promises a whole new direction. What is particularly striking is Andrew Weatherall’s growth in stature, not only as a singer and frontman but also as a sharp wordsmith. Here we find tales of love and rejection that rip open a seething underbelly of mistrust, tension, revenge, and redemption along the way. Like Robert Johnson’s appointment with the devil, Two Lone Swordsmen find themselves in a clandestine engagement at Dante’s Inferno, pulling up a stool while St. Nick pours from the bottle and take a hearty swig.

Overview “It is precisely Flynt’s lack of interest in a musical ‘career’ that ensures his music remains fascinatingly personal.” — The Wire Taste the magic! Nova’Billy is another edible audible from Henry Flynt’s dusty lower Manhattan bunker, and it stands as one of the fullest documents of his tenure with a full working rock band to date. For less than one calendar year, between 1974 and 1975, Henry Flynt’s hard-driving, heavyjamming agit country rock band Nova’Billy embraced bare-knuckled deep-fried groove attacks, bearded hippie jam band workouts, and a monstrous mélange of blues, boogie, and free jazz squeal into a musical soufflé that could only have come together with Flynt cooking. If the Insurrections laid the foundation for Flynt’s anti-war garage rock sound, the emergence of Nova’Billy is the realization of his vision of obtuse personal politics, provocative leftwing posturing, and a gleefully recombinant spin on Southern music.
Selling Points • When Locust Music’s sumptuous archival endeavors began, Henry Flynt immediately had the eyes and ears of the music intelligentsia. This quickly led to extended features in The Wire and Signal To Noise, and accolades from musicians the world over. • Henry Flynt has longstanding associations with LaMonte Young, Tony Conrad, Yoko Ono, and a veritable “who’s who” of the downtown New York art rock scene from the mid-1960s through the ’80s. • Full press campaign; promotional posters. • Ads with Signal To Noise, Big Takeover, Skyscraper, and Ugly Things.

Overview “Paul Metzger has graced Minneapolis with his guitar and banjo playing in various contexts for over twenty years, but this is the first time I’ve encountered him. On the strength of his side-long performance here, that’s a serious deficit. Many Westerners borrow a few elements from raga styles, and a few musicians from other disciplines are serious students of Hindustani and Carnatic lore, but Metzger’s guitar playing sounds like the real thing. And yet it’s true to the what-the-fuck spirit that’s motivated the best punk, jazz, and free music of any stripe.” — Signal To Noise Minnesota’s Paul Metzger is an unsung hero of the unaccompanied string instrument and a master musician of an instrument of his own invention. On Deliverance—a real-time performance on his overhauled twenty-one-string banjo—the listener will be treated to some of the most deeply satisfying and impulsive outer cosmos ragadelia he is ever likely to hear. Clocking in at nearly sixty colossal minutes, Deliverance contains three tracks of unfiltered aural transcendence—a hypnotic raga epic that is both a slow, burning meditation and an urgent mind/body duel. Metzger’s playing may summon up the spirits of Sandy Bull’s searching inventiveness, Billy Faier’s out Tacoma sides, J.P. Pickens’ tweaked Americana, Henry Flynt’s searing harmonic drones, or Big Jim Sullivan’s psychedelic exotica, but at the end of the day, he is no idolater and we’re all a little luckier to have him around to occupy his own singular spot in this post-Fahey world.

Overview The Family Elan is the intuitive, devotional project of Glasgow’s free-wheeling folk dervish Chris Hladowski (Nalle, The One Ensemble, Scatter), built around his gently lilting vocal offerings and the absorbing, droning, modal sounds of his long-necked lute. Stare of Dawn is one of those special little records—searchingly beautiful, seemingly effortless, deeply enchanting, and completely hypnotic. The Family Elan draws on a vast array of folk musical traditions, from the Greek rebetes of the 1920s, the tanbur playing of Kurdish Sufi mystic Ostad Elahi, and the Âshyq songs of Azerbaijani sâz master Edalat Nasibov to revivalist offerings from Anne Briggs’ bouzouki inventions, early Incredible String Band, and Hungarian revivalist Muzsikás, to name just a few.

Overview
Tullycraft is known for writing indie pop anthems. Over the years, the band has penned a handful of songs that practically define the twee movement in America. It would be a safe statement to say that the new album, Every Scene Needs a Center, picks up where the band’s fourth album, Disenchanted Hearts Unite, left off, but that would also be selling Tullycraft short. This new album, recorded entirely on analog tape, is not simply a collection of wonderfully snarky pop songs with one or two anthems thrown in, but is an entire record of ultra-catchy, smart indie pop anthems that takes aim at vampires, the English class system, goth waitresses, and much more. This time around, Tullycraft may have actually crafted a twee masterpiece.
Press Quotes “Yes, it’s the esoteric world of too-clever, self-referential indie-pop, but hey, you can dance to it too … Tullycraft kick[s] some twee ass.” — Pitchfork “Tullycraft has never been shy about being a twee pop band, and while they still are quite twee, this is the first record that sounds like it was made by grown-ups. Growing up but not growing old is a neat trick to pull off, and Tullycraft have just about got it down.” — All Music Guide “Decidedly extroverted, Seattle’s Tullycraft took a punk approach to its indie-pop aesthetic … like a group of kids covering the Violent Femmes.” — Magnet

Overview
Brian Tighe: guitar, vocals Maria May: guitar, piano, vocals Allison LaBonne: bass, vocals John Jerry: drums
Three songwriters—Brian Tighe, Maria May, and Allison LaBonne—come together with drummer John Jerry and special friends to create an unlikely musical voyage aboard ships, carnival rides, and airplanes, trespassing through backyards, into human resources departments, and down perilous roads into the distance. Bitter yet life-affirming, The Owls console comic strip characters, invent the perfect man, party on the eve of the apocalypse, explore the notion of empire, pay their bills by candlelight, and send flowers into sewers before bidding listeners a rousing adieu. Rich with melody and male/female harmonies, Daughters and Suns tenders buoyant, laid-back pop with gentle strikes of lightning. While The Owls’ sound is hard to pin down, LaBonne and May’s songs seem reminiscent of the Velvets combined with the vocals of Laetitia Sattier and Mary Hansen of Stereolab. Tighe and Ittner’s songs seem to honor McCartney and Lennon, respectively, and all of this lends to the best thing you’ve drank your coffee to in a while.
Press Quotes “Sunny, pretty, sexy ambient pop from co-vocalists Maria May and Allison LaBonne and the latter’s husband, Brian Tighe of HangUps fame. It’s like Stereolab melded with the Kinks’ Village Green.” — Minneapolis Star Tribune “Gracefully explores the vacuum left behind when they escape, like helium from a popped balloon afloat somewhere between Sarah Records and Past Masters Volume Two.” — Pitchfork

James Towning: computer
Realistic’s third album, Perpetual Memory Loss, features sixteen tracks of intricate sample-based compositions: a beautifully sophisticated celebration of found sound, recorded media, technology, and electronic composition. Slices of field recordings mesh with surreal electronic melodies to create enjoyably odd multi-layered musical fun. James Towning recorded as Fact TwentyTwo (Emigre Music) before debuting his Realistic project on Negativland’s Seeland label. Following that were a 12” EP, Smells Like Teen Disco, and a full-length album, Private Moments, both on Illegal Art. Realistic has appeared on releases with (or been remixed by) The Evolution Control Committee, The Bran Flakes, Wobbly, Sawako, Pimmon, and Monochrome (Charles Noel).
Press Quotes “Following the esthetic of Negativland and John Oswald, Realistic borrows material from every possible source: classic rock, disco, self improvement records, soap operas [and more].” — All Music Guide “Realistic brings you pop-culture-aware, experimental music that is at once interesting and entertaining.” — Splendid “A humorous and lively collection of sample-driven electro.” — Incursion “Realistic provides us a very enveloping aural feed—and quite a solid meal, in fact.” — Absorb
Selling Points • Includes detailed full-color digipak artwork designed by James Towning, who has a rich history as a producer of electronic music dating back to the early ’90s. • The debut Realistic album was released by Negativland. • Has worked side by side with The Evolution Control Committee over the years. • Free digital EP made available for download preceding the album’s release. • Press, radio, and new media campaigns via Fanatic Promotion. • Part of a national advertising campaign for Illegal Art (releases from Realistic, Girl Talk, Oh Astro, and Steinski) throughout Fall/Winter 2007 in XLR8R, Under the Radar, The Wire, CMJ, Resonance, and more.

Overview “If amazing experimental hip-hop that involves phat damaged beats and guitar twangs is your bag, then Yea Big has it all.” — Amp Camp Ever wonder what happened to the fun in hip-hop? What happened to the Digital Undergrounds, the Biz Markies, and the De La Souls? With all this serious rap, who fills in the gap for the people who just want to get their dance on? The answer: the dauntless duo of DJ Yea Big and emcee Kid Static! Yea Big and Kid Static make comic book sci-fi hip-hop for the stationarily challenged—the soundtrack for your next dance-off or the preamble to your next good-times coup. When the duo is not hijacking your brain piece, Kid Static travels the country jumping off buildings as a Hollywood stunt double, while Yea Big practices mind control techniques on a pack of designer breed dogs. A Day Without Disaster is the newest chapter in the musical adventures of Nick Castro & The Young Elders. The group has spent the last year recording and touring the world while honing its skills both in the studio and on stage. This EP is a glimpse into the ever-evolving mind of the group, which dwells somewhere between the romantic male/female duets of Richard & Linda Thompson and the exotic worldly arrangements of the Incredible String Band. With a focused touch, unusual acoustic textures, gentle wordplay, and ensemble interaction, The Young Elders are traversing the folk world and leaving large shoes to fill. The band is currently comprised of members Wendy Watson, Ryan Kirkpatrick, Christof Certik (Winter Flowers), and guest Jeb Lipson. Though often lumped in with the “freak-folk” genre, Nick Castro has been transcending such labels since most of these new folkies were still playing indie rock.

Second installment in the Cosmic Debris split art/LP series set up by Maurizio & Roberto Opalio, a.k.a. My Cat Is An Alien. Volume two sees the two space brothers alongside visual and sound artist Steve Roden. Roden’s contribution features the unique experience of hearing him literally “playing” guitar chords. The first track develops through the minimal and reiterated sound architecture of Roden’s so-called “possible landscapes,” where singular source materials such as objects and field recordings are abstracted through electronic processes to generate new audio spaces, characterizing the artist’s aesthetic in sound works. The following track is a relatively unheard aspect of Roden’s ability to shape a fascinating, intimate piece with only an old electric guitar and his own fingers, and it also demonstrates how a true artist can recreate his own personal universe, no matter what kind of source is utilized. Meanwhile, MCIAA delivers another piece of “cosmic debris” centered on multilayered voice echoes, toy pianos, space drones, and the brothers’ own physical gestures. Their track “Everything Waves Like Cosmic Debris” also features the contribution of Ramona Ponzini on Japanese bells.

Overview “The Circle Is Not Round began as a series of live recordings that Baker blurs into a concoction that lays somewhere in between the spiraling melancholy of a non-aggressive Troum and the ’70s progambience of Popul Vuh.” — Aquarius Records ARC formed spontaneously in 2000 at a performance at the Ambient Ping, Toronto’s longrunning live ambient/experimental music series. ARC is a trio made up of Aidan Baker (guitars, flutes, tape loops), Richard Baker (drum kit, percussion), and Christopher Kukiel (percussion). The group’s music is a mixture of Popul Vuh acoustic compositions, Pink Floyd’s Ummagumma era, Voice of Eye, or Subarachnoid Space, with dense, organic drones and hypnotic ethnic rhythms. ARC’s sound is centered on melodic loops, textures, and samples provided by heavily effected guitars and other melodic instruments. This is overlaid with tribal rhythms provided by various percussive instruments: drum kit, djembe, tabla, wood blocks, and more. With this combination, ARC creates a roiling tapestry of both rhythmic and ambient sound, simultaneously primeval and avant-garde. ARC, regular performers in Toronto and Montreal, has released a number of CD-R releases on such labels as Piehead Records, Worthy Records, and the band’s own Arcolepsy Records. The Circle Is Not Round, the band’s debut CD release, is packaged in a special cardboard digisleeve with varnished images.

Pete Kember, founding member of Spacemen 3, Spectrum, and Experimental Audio Research) met Julie’s Haircut at Studio Alpha in Bologna to cooperate with the final editing of their new album. This was a new starting point for Julie’s Haircut in the field of music research—only a small portion of the three days of studio recordings were released on that album. Contains two long, deep duo cuts of univibe-era lap steel/electronic tone generator improvisation, one side recorded live and stamped with the indelible mark of Bullbabe Studios in Austin. The sounds: monolithic serenity infused with a deep breath from the void, as peaceful and violent as a mountain range. Tom Carter is best known for his work with Charalambides, which he co-founded with longtime creative partner Christina Carter in 1991. Since 2002, he has also undertaken solo work and collaborations. His 2003 solo tour, centered around the seminal Brattleboro FreeFolk Festival, featured unaccompanied solo shows and musical excursions with Bardo Pond, Thurston Moore, Dredd Foole, the MVEE Medicine Show, Ian Nagoski, Tower Recordings, and Double Leopards, among others. Vanessa Arn became a member of Boston/California/Texas group Primordial Undermind soon after Carter’s brief tenure in the group. The potential for mountainous difference tones between the lap steel and the triwave tone generator (a custom built synthesizer) was immediately apparent to all parties, and Carter suggested collaboration. A handful of recordings ensued, and the results are here for your perusal.

Overview The music of Brooklyn music/art collective Slow Six is the sound of lifelong musicians exploring and sounding out a room together. Amplified strings, guitars, a Fender Rhodes, and drums are joined by homegrown software “instruments” to process the sound live. Often live radio and TV broadcasts are incorporated within these sonic textures and tangled rhythms, acting as unwitting vocal collaborators from afar. The detail and structure of these compositions reveals the band’s background in the world of modern classical music, leaning on NYC’s post-minimalist heritage, while their electrified live energy projects the palpable drive of a long-running band with deep indie roots.
