Overview
Special re-issue of the crew’s first collective album as a whole. Re-packaging and bonus tracks have been added to this fan favorite as an added bonus. Special remixes created by hip-hop heavyweights Daddy Kev and Pigeon John also appear. If you haven’t heard this yet and are a fan of the Living Legends, this is what you should get before anything else.
Press Quotes “Almost Famous proves a valiant spawning of collective collaborations, with each rapper offering a new door of wildly different stylings to explore in great depth.” –— Peter Agoston “With an ironic ostentatious appeal, Almost Famous should go a long way toward establishing the members of this oversized crew as legitimate underground hip-hop heroes. Living Legends is too real for an industry that, at times, favors fantasy and fortune. Its music reflects a love and commitment missing in much of today’s money-driven rap landscape and becomes the prototype for a struggling independent success story.” — The Badger Herald
Selling Points • Expanded reissue of first ever Living Legends CD (previously out of print). • Bonus remixes by Daddy Kev and Pigeon John. • National major market tour with hip-hop heavyweights Murs, Slug, Felt, Brother Ali, and more including three Rock the Bells shows, probably the biggest hip-hop festival ever, featuring Rage Against the Machine, Wu-Tang Clan, The Roots, Mos Def, De La Soul, Public Enemy, and plenty more. • Living Legends have sold over a quarter of a million records collectively. • National indie press campaign has already started, targeting major hip-hop outlets like URB, Source, XLR8R, Vice, and more. • Brand new Living Legends web page and MySpace page recently launched. • Major internet blog blitz campaign thru The Orchard Press Dept. to start in mid-July. • Ads with URB, XLR8R, LA Weekly, and Mean Street.

Overview
Originally conceived as a free concert at the University of Michigan Museum of Art in 2004, recording for Sweet Earth Flower began shortly after that successful evening. Although the connection between His Name Is Alive and Marion Brown may not be obvious to some, this is a very special release in either artist’s varied catalog. HNIA collaborates with members of NOMO and Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra to create both studio and live recordings, and Marion Brown has given the project his blessing.
Press Quotes “Just the fact that one of our favorite bands dedicated a show to honoring the music of one of the greatest and most overlooked free jazz saxophonists and innovators of New Music that we know of was enough to make our list.” — Salon.com “HNIA, whose trademark has been mixing paradise with purgatory, have made an odd little Eden that’s both peaceful and disorienting.” — SPIN “His Name Is Alive is one of the most remarkable creations of the pop underground … it will stand the test of time.” — Dusted
Selling Points • His Name Is Alive is one of most respected indie bands of the past fifteen+ years, and Marion Brown is well recognized as a hugely influential jazz saxophonist and composer. • Opportunities for marketing to both jazz and independent rock markets. • Released in succession with new His Name Is Alive album XMMER, available in September 2007 (Silver Mountain/Sony BMG). • Features most of the Detroit-based band NOMO, one of the best of the current crop of American Afro-beat bands, as well as members of Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra. • Full service to rock, jazz, and experimental music press by High Two and AAM. • Full service to rock, jazz, and experimental webzines by High Two. • Service to college and NPR radio by High Two and AAM. • Ads with Signal To Noise, The Wire, Magnet, and more. • Some limited joint advertising opportunities with Sony BMG have been made available in conjunction with new His Name Is Alive album released in September 2007.

Amnon D. Freidlin: guitar Evan Lipson: bass Carlos Santiago, Jr: violin Eli Litwin: drums Alex Nagle: guitar
Formed in 2006, Normal Love is a Philadelphia-based instrumental quintet comprised of amplified violin, two electric guitars, electric bass, and drums. Normal Love’s music generally has a loud and brutal aesthetic, with compositional influences ranging from African minimalism to serialism and death metal, but rarely within the same piece. The quintet’s frenzied live shows have earned them a large following in their native Philadelphia, as well as invitations to play in various US and Canadian cities including appearances at John Zorn’s new artists’ space The Stone (February 2007), Dark Forces Swing Blind Punches Festival (December 2006), and the first annual Philadelphia POPPED! Festival (April 2007). Normal Love has been awarded an American Composers Forum grant for its innovative and compelling compositions. Members of the band have performed and/or recorded with RUINS, Man Man, Dr. Dog, Pauline Oliveros, Kayo Dot, Dynamite Club, SATANIZED, Make a Rising, Illuminea, Mat Maneri, Jamie Saft, Andrew D’Angelo, and Mike Pride. The band has shared the stage with Make a Rising, Dysrhythmia, Daughters, Zs, Chinese Stars, Ocrilim (Mick Barr), Ex-Models, Cheer-Accident, Aa, James Plotkin, Weasel Walter, and Genghis Tron.
Press Quotes “Normal Love is messy. Rock ‘n’ roll messy. Spontaneous-combustion messy.” — Philadelphia City Paper “Off the hook! … [Normal Love’s] music is the kind that’s just so perfectly discordant, so assaulting and soothing at the same time. And the thing that amazes me about these guys is the fact that they play with this totally controlled abandon, as if the perverse manipulation of their instruments is the most natural thing in the world.” — Phawker.com

Featured Artists Albert Ayler: saxophone

Overivew Albert Ayler: heard about, more than heard. But that’s all about to change. Revenant Records has granted ESP-Disk’ exclusive distribution rights to its Grammy nominated Albert Ayler nine-CD box set entitled Holy Ghost: Rare & Unissued Recordings (1962–70). An internationally recognized jazz saxophonist and protégé of John Coltrane whose untimely death has been the subject of many conspiracy theories, Ayler returns to ESP-Disk’, the label for which he recorded four groundbreaking albums in the mid-’60s. Commenting upon the alliance, ESP founder Bernard Stollman said, “ESP provided an unique environment that helped incubate artistically ambitious projects. The Ayler material in the box set draws heavily on Ayler’s most productive period on ESP. Revenant’s empathetic treatment of the material, and our partnership with them, has allowed for an exciting exchange of resources between two fiercely independent labels.” Seeking nothing short of Truth In Music, Albert Ayler became the catalytic force in defining the sound of the tenor in Free Jazz, and was a heavy influence on John Coltrane’s later work. Holy Ghost is the first comprehensive attempt to build a monument in sound to Albert Ayler. The settings—radio and TV sessions, studio demos, private recordings, and live concert footage—find his music at its most liberated. And with the sponsorship and assistance of Ayler’s family, friends, and colleagues, Holy Ghost documents his neverbefore-heard first and last recordings, bookending rare and unissued music from every stage of his career.
Press Quotes “Eye-popping and mind-boggling, the Holy Ghost box treats Ayler with religious devotion. It’s a reliquary replete with replicas of a childhood photo, a handwritten note, a real pressed flower, and a weighty hardbound book of photos, timelines, and essays. A beautiful object, a trove of rare music, and a triumph of jazz scholarship, it’s a bargain at under $100.” — NPR, Fresh Air “As Sun Ra so aptly put it, ‘It’s a motherfucker, don’t ya know?’ Seems quite unlikely that there will be another release with such gushing importance and pleasure, mixed so sweetly, in our lifetime or the next.” — Arthur, reviews by Byron Coley and Thurston Moore, #1 on the list Good Goddamn Things in 2004 “The Everest of all jazz boxed sets in 2004. A major event. Holy Ghost represents a long overdue restoration of Ayler’s art to a listening public that has had scant chance to hear it.” — Chicago Tribune “Housed in a gorgeous spirit box, Holy Ghost is overwhelming in its size, breadth, packaging, and even its affordable price. It’s a small price to pay for salvation.” — Creem “A landmark new box ... As you claw through the gorgeous packaging and fetishistic inserts, you may feel like a miner on a mission. You will find gold.” — L.A Weekly
Selling Points • Nine CDs of rare & unissued recordings and a 208-page color hardbound book housed in lavish spirit box cast from handcarved original. • New essays by Amiri Baraka, Val Wilmer, and other Ayler scholars. • Unpublished photos and family memorabilia. • Artist testimonials of first encounters with Ayler’s music. • Exhaustive chronology of Ayler performance activities. • Available now through NAIL via ESP-Disk’.

Overview
Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Lester Young, Freddie Green, Louis Armstrong, Roy Eldridge, Jack Teagarden, Barney Bigard, Coleman Hawkins, Art Tatum, Teddy Wilson, Red Norvo, Lionel Hampton, and many more!
In 1972, thirteen years after her death, Congress extended copyright protections to include recorded musical performances. Billie Holiday would have benefited greatly from such protection: during the more than twenty-five years of her career, Holiday gave an unknown number of live performances on TV & radio and in clubs & concert halls, many of which were recorded both officially and unofficially by sound engineers, fellow musicians, and fans. Today ESP-Disk’, which for many years has been assembling unofficial recordings of several artists from before 1972, has released one of the most comprehensive collections of live Billie Holiday recordings to date, some previously available but most not. These recordings, laid out in chronological order, not only demonstrate the arc of Holiday’s development as a vocalist but give a rare behind-the-scenes look into how the singer approached her musicians and her audience. The first disc of this compilation opens with a twenty-year-old Billie Holiday performing with Duke Ellington in 1935, followed by a radio broadcast from the Savoy Hotel in New York two years later in which Holiday fronts the Count Basie Orchestra. The next four discs cover Holiday’s career from 1949 to her death in 1959. During those ten years, advances in radio and TV technology changed the way Americans consumed entertainment, and the mass proliferation of recorded media from that time leaves us with dozens of examples of Holiday’s live performances. Set in the context of other early recorded media presentations, it is easy to imagine how revolutionary Holiday’s singing sounded to mainstream American audiences, with her plaintive voice, blues inflections, and uncensored delivery. This magnificent set includes a portfolio of photographs and performance data detailing a historical timeline of rare radio/television broadcasts and concert performances—and the events and situations that lead to these powerful performances—along with explanations of some of her most popular material. The set also includes a rare and private recording of she and some friends in an impromptu setting, with Holiday singing “My Yiddisha Mamma.”
Press Quotes “The first popular jazz singer to move audiences with the intense, personal feeling of classic blues, Billie Holiday changed the art of American pop vocals forever.” — All Music Guide “Considered by many to be the greatest jazz vocalist of all time, Billie Holiday lived a tempestuous and difficult life. Her singing expressed an incredible depth of emotion that spoke of hard times and injustice as well as triumph. Though her career was relatively short and often erratic, she left behind a body of work as great as any vocalist before or since.” — PBS.org, “American Masters”
Selling Points • A five-CD compilation of extremely rare live performance recordings from 1935–1959, plus a detailed timeline of performance information. • Digitally re-mastered live performances, manufactured in the US by the original label. • Radio campaign will target college and independent stations. • Review copies submitted to numerous jazz publications.

Overview
Dan Mangan: vocals, guitar, Rhodes piano Simon Kelly: guitar, Rhodes piano Amy Arsenault: backing vocals Randal Stoll: drums Kerry Galloway: bass Finn Manniche: cello Ryan Naso: trumpet Richard “Rags” Michaelski: harmonica
At the tender age of seven, Dan Mangan’s first goal was to memorize and recite Abbey Road’s Side B. At seventeen, it was to record his first EP. Now, twenty-four years old and living in Vancouver, his next goal is to meander into the stereos and hometowns of music lovers worldwide. Plan of attack? Release his debut album Postcards and Daydreaming and tour—a lot. With two recently completed tours of the US and UK, a feature in British tastemaker magazine NME, umpteen festival performances, three US West Coast tours including sold–out showcases at Los Angeles’ Viper Room and The Roxy—topped off with a crammed SXSW 2007 performance—one could definitely say he’s off to a good start. Tying together acoustic folk and subtle symphonic pop, Postcards and Daydreaming is unabashedly mellow. However, Mangan’s powerful, weather-beaten vocals hint at something epic lurking in the undertones. Think Kurt Vonnegut with a gravelly sweet singing voice.
Press Quotes “This folk singer may only be twenty-three, but he sings with the soul of Woody Guthrie—if Woody Guthrie had listened to Godspeed! You Black Emperor.” — NME “Dan Mangan’s music is what you’d expect from a lovechild of Harry Nilsson or Tom Waits.” — The Fly “Deliciously downbeat … perfect for anyone who has invested in the works of Hayden or Crooked Fingers.” — Georgia Straight “Successfully creates a hazy hungover atmosphere you can feel on every song … a Canadian performer who has a knack for the kind of sad songs that could potentially drive you to drink.” — Metro

Overview
Andrew Wedderburn: vocals, guitar Aaron Smelski: guitar, vocals Joel Nye: drums, percussion, piano Patrick May: bass, vocals
Hot Little Rocket is one of the longest running and most beloved bands ever to emerge from the Western Canadian rock scene. For almost nine years, the band’s unforgettable songs and jarring live performances have stuck in the ears and hearts of indie rockers all across the country. In 2006, Hot Little Rocket spent a week in Chicago with legendary recording engineer Steve Albini (Nirvana, Pixies, Stooges) and came out with How To Lose Everything—not only their best album to date but the benchmark of a long-running band finally coming into its own. Hot Little Rocket has piled up road experience like some kind of loud, skinny hockey franchise, traveling back and forth across Canada and sharing the stage with Spoon, Modest Mouse, The Weakerthans, and Hot Hot Heat, to name a few. After the initial Canadian release of the Laika EP in 2000, the band’s debut full-length Danish Documentary (2001) reached #17 on the Earshot national charts. The next album, 2003’s Our Work and Why We Do It, peaked nationally at #9. How To Lose Everything marks the group’s first formal release in the US. That signature “Albini sound” finally captures the strength of Hot Little Rocket’s gob-smackingly energetic live show like never before. Features the singles “Like Killers” and “Sleep Today.”
Press Quotes “Hot Little Rocket is Calgary’s hottest band, and their unique and catchy sound is quickly becoming well known throughout the country.” — MTV.com “An epic energy … denser guitars and epic walls of drums support Andrew Wedderburn’s vocals. From the infectious build of ‘Like Killers’ to the clicking rhythm of ‘Sleep Today,’ Hot Little Rocket have created an album worthy of its big name producer [Steve Albini].” — Exclaim Featured Album Review “An example of no-nonsense rock songwriting. Wedderburn’s vowel-laden phrasing is still as idiosyncratic as ever. How To Lose Everything is worth picking up just to hear ‘It Gets Dark,’ a slow-moving ode to being in a movie about a band. Sure, Hot Little Rocket has been around for a long time, but ’90s throwback indie rock this isn’t.” — Edmonton Journal (HHHH) “At the core of the album is near flawless songwriting … unassumingly brilliant storytelling. With massive guitars, a jaw-dropping stereo spread, and surprisingly effective dry vocal treatment, [How To Lose Everything] sounds fantastic.” — FFWD
Selling Points • Hotly anticipated fourth album, with Steve Albini at the helm. • Full servicing of album and video for “Like Killers” to press, radio, retail, online, and new media contacts. • Extensive touring in the US for Winter 2007/Spring 2008, including SXSW 2008. • RIYL: Blonde Redhead, Modest Mouse, Jawbox, My Bloody Valentine. • Artist development list price and marketing sticker. • Hiring independent publicist and radio servicing company. • Majority of advertising will be done online, including mp3 giveaways.

NAIL WELCOMES BELLE CITY POP TO ITS ROSTER! Devoted to the wanton proliferation of quality rock and roll, Belle City Pop is a company based in Brooklyn, NY. Its founder, Brian Malone, was raised in Racine, WI, affectionately known as the “Belle City” of the Great Lakes. “Pop” could be identified as the categorical zenith of modern day music, or an obvious reference to the unfairly maligned U2 record of that same name (1997).
Overview On this release, Chris Simpson (Mineral, The Gloria Record) moves away from his influential brand of emotionally captivating indie rock to a brighter but equally expressive folk/pop/rock sound. There is a feeling of freedom, new birth, and joy in these tracks as Simpson and his band Zookeeper quite literally let loose. Hotly anticipated, the ten tracks take the listener on an eclectic expedition. Raucous slices of acoustic jangle-pop align in epic form. At times tender and cathartic, discordant and melodic, the album lyrically and sonically reveals an influential artist in his prime. In all, a most welcome, rewarding, and exciting return!
Press Quotes “Zookeeper shows a natural maturation for Simpson, who expands his sound while retaining elements that made his previous bands so memorable. With 2007 promising a full-length from the Zookeeper camp, sullen ex-teenagers and pop-minded indie folks all over the world have something to look forward to.” — HarmoniumMusic

Overview
Alex Dupree and the Trapdoor Band’s debut patiently unravels to reveal compact, melodic folk. Interspersing traditional folk renderings with the lo-fi and dust-strewn, Dupree’s voice sits in the foreground against a mix of banjos, acoustic guitars, fiddles, and percussive incentives. At thirteen songs, the album blossoms as a long player, climaxing on a gorgeous recital imbued with subtle notes of romance and rebellion. A confident and tender debut, this album shines for its simplicity, its nimble acoustic foundation, and its precocious storytelling.
Alex Dupree and the Trapdoor Band rejoices with the anticipated release of this second full-length recording! Picking up where their debut left off, the singer and players have trumped themselves with this epic exploration. Recorded in the summer of 2006, Las Meridanzas builds upon the stirring briskness of their folk-acoustic debut, this time boldly executing movements into chamber pop and rock grandiflora. The Trapdoor Band has a year of activity afoot, with a tour scheduled to coincide with this album’s release in addition to future recording sessions and releases.

Lightning 1968–1971 Genre: Rock/60s Label: Arf! Arf! Records CD: ARF 100 Price Code: M NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA
A severe stoner hard rock thunderstorm from 1968–1971, Lightning was an offshoot of Minneapolis ’60s legends Litter and featured guitar wizard Tom Zippy Caplan, who left after recording their 1966 garage classic Distortions and 1968 psych masterpiece $100 Fine. The band started out as a power trio and cut one fierce Cream-inspired single, William b/w Of Paupers and Poets, under the White Lightning moniker with Twin Cities record producer Warren Kendrick. The band regrouped into a quintet and scored a record deal with P.I.P., who issued an eight-song album that, over time, has become a highly collectable LP. Lightning became one of the Midwest’s hardest working rock acts, touring extensively throughout the region during their three-year tenure. This authorized CD reissue includes the entire LP and the aforementioned 45, plus six more bonus tracks (including edited 45 mixes of two album tracks), all wrapped in an archival twelve-page booklet with lots of photos and liner notes by Litter scribe Doug Sheppard. Fans of Blue Cheer, Cream, Hendrix, and Arf !Arf!’s four psychedelic Dose comps will really dig this new disc.

Voices features some of the best musicians in almost every genre: old-time, punk, folk, jazz, rock, electronica, lounge, and Latino music.

Laura Veirs’ songs are steeped in natural imagery, blending influences ranging from folk and blues to punk. Her collaborators on Carbon Glacier, The Tortured Souls, reflect this vision of a style that spans rock, jazz, and avant-garde: producer/ drummer Tucker Martine has collaborated with Bill Frisell, Jim White, and Modest Mouse; viola player Eyvind Kang performs with Beck and Bill Frisell while leading his own ensemble; Lori Goldston, who toured with Nirvana, plays cello; Steve Moore adds trombone and keyboards; and Karl Blau contributes bass, guitar, and vocals (both Moore and Blau are veterans of the Northwest underground folk and rock community).

Ifwhen We Will Gently Destroy You Genre: Alt Rock Label: Clairecords CD: CLE 72 Price Code: M NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA
Featured Artists
Overview
Kentaro: bass Mary MacDowell: keyboards Merc: guitar, programming, vocals
Formed by Merc—a founding member of post-shoegaze band All Natural Lemon & Lime Flavors—Ifwhen has been spreading their somewhat noisy, melodic, and oddly structured music throughout NYC and beyond. ANL+LF received worldwide acclaim with three LPs released in the US, Europe, and Japan. The band’s sound was considered unique due its complexity, both sonically and compositionally. That band disbanded in early 2000, and Merc rose from the ashes to form Ifwhen, taking complexity and sonic attitude to the next level. With a live show that includes a real-time visual artist creating live projections and an immense arsenal of sound, Ifwhen is not meant to be “listened to.” It is meant to be experienced. We Will Gently Destroy You, mixed by Dälek’s Oktopus at Deadverse Studios in early 2007, marks the band’s first US release. Sounding like carefully orchestrated chaos, dense walls of sound create multiple rhythms. Gentle vocals and melodic hooks float through the songs, managing to consistently keep them pretty around the edges. Somehow it all makes just enough sense—convincing you that normalcy is just another part of the equation. Influences and elements are certainly present, though difficult to put a finger on—not quite as twisted as Syd Barrett, not as monstrous as Glenn Branca, not as abrasive as the Velvet Underground, and not as technical as King Crimson—but it is certainly all in there.
Press Quotes “Ifwhen will overwhelm your senses and dazzle your eardrums with their brand of sonic bliss. Walls of sound wash over you as percussion dances in between washes of fuzz.” — SomewhereCold “Somewhere between lush instrumentation and experimental noise lies the rather jarring but intriguing sound of Ifwhen. How three people can make so much noise is the first question that comes to mind.” — Delusions of Adequacy “Uncanny combination of floating vocal melodies, distorted guitars, sound wall of keyboards, digital drum beats, and progressive bass lines is very hypnotizing and contagious.” — MarCreation
Selling Points • Highly anticipated first official US release! • Ifwhen is the new project from core ex-All Natural Lemon & Lime Flavors member Merc! • Mixed by Dälek’s Oktopus at Deadverse Studios. • Ifwhen vs. Dälek 12” will be released in early 2008. • Core radio service by AAM Sunday Service. • National retail promo campaign by NAIL Media. • Additional mailing to national and international press outlets by Clairecords. • E-media promotion through Clairecords, Tonevendor, MySpace, and more. • Dälek will cross-promote this album along with the forthcoming 12” on their website and MySpace page.

Overview
Over a year in the making, The Brother Kite’s Moonlit Race EP has undergone several conceptual changes. The final product is one to cherish. Originally conceived as a single for “Get On, Me”—arguably the catchiest song on the band’s masterful sophomore album Waiting for the Time To Be Right—the EP stays true to form by leading off with that track. From there on, the listener is treated to five exclusive tracks: alternate versions and mixes of two album tracks from WFTTTBR, including the title cut and “Hopeless and Unsung”; a never-before-released live version of “Never in Years” from a WERS 88.9 radio session in Boston; a song from DJ Potter’s creepy child-zombie short film Of All That Is Unearthed, and a track originally recorded for the most recent Adult Swim download compilation. In addition, the CD has enhanced content featuring three videos!
2006’s masterpiece is now available for the first time on vinyl— and in extremely limited quantity! Limited to a pressing of just 300 copies worldwide, collectors take note: these are sure to sell fast! The album will include a bonus CDR entitled Inside Waiting for the Time To Be Right, an exclusive set of alternate mixes of every song on the album! This is a brave rock record, astonishing not only for its depth and maturity, but also for its willingness to stray from the shoegaze sound that most easily defined the band’s previous works. Layered guitar textures remain an important ingredient; however, Patrick Boutwell’s impassioned vocals are now pushed to the forefront, showcasing a Brian Wilson-esque gift for melody hinted at in earlier songs.

• Limited to 300 copies. Includes an exclusive bonus CD, featuring alternate mixes of the entire album!

Clipd Beaks Hoarse Lords Genre: Avant Rock Label: Lovepump United CD: LPU 15 Price Code: O NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA
Featured Artists
Overview
Nic Barbeln: vocals Ray Benjamin: drums Greg Pritchard: guitar, keyboards Scott Ecklein: bass
The creation of Hoarse Lords began in the summer of 2005, when Clipd Beaks relocated from Minnesota to Oakland. Influenced by hobo culture, the drugged-up hyphy sounds currently dominating Bay Area airwaves, and underground “Neu San Francisco” warehouse parties where techno bangers fade into tribal noise jams, everything on Hoarse Lords is turned up to 11. Harsh and distorted, it’s a fitting new sound for a band that references “clipping” in their name, and feels every bit as sick and violent as a severed, bleeding beak. On Hoarse Lords, the band sounds like it’s pushing itself further and further into some unknown and terrifying black hole. Song titles like “Melter,” “Wrathscapes,” and “We Will Bomb You” set the scene: these are the end times, and Clipd Beaks is right there with you, banging drums in a tornado. As the album builds to a ferocious conclusion, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel and a feeling of peace beyond the point of pain. We can’t escape, so we submit, and are consumed.
Press Quotes “Spectacular … Clipd Beaks glimmer in their highly futuristic hybridization of glossy modern rock.” — Skyscraper “Profoundly psychedelic … makes you feel grateful just for being alive.” — XLR8R “Supermax-tight monolith monsters of psychedelia.” — L.A. Weekly “Dark and noisy and messy. Which is cool, if you like strange shit.” — Vice “Groovy … abrasive with the synthesizers. It’s like, if you can’t see the direct lines between This Heat and DJ Screw, then maybe you need to do a little more homework.” — The Fader
Selling Points • Hoarse Lords is the follow-up to Clipd Beaks’ acclaimed 2006 EP Preyers (Tigerbeat6). • Clipd Beaks are featured alongside Broken Social Scene, Madlib, and others on the soundtrack to Gardens of the Night, an independent feature starring John Malkovich and Tom Arnold. • Full November US tour booked by Panache (The Slits, AIDS Wolf, Mika Miko). • Deluxe CD gatefold packaging with artwork by Eric Luken (Blood Brothers’ Young Machetes, Headwound City). • Recorded by Shawn Porter (Xiu Xiu, Jim Yoshii Pileup). • Mastered by Kramer (Butthole Surfers). • National, regional, online, and print publicity by Kasey Price at Fanatic Promotion. • New media by Fanatic Promotion. • Radio promotion by AAM. • Ads with Skyscraper, Pitchfork, Alarm, and Insound.

Oh Astro Champions of Wonder Genre: Electronica Label: Illegal Art CD: ILL 115 Price Code: M NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA
Featured Artists Jane Dowe: computer, vocals Hank Hofler: laptop, controllers Stefen Robinson: computer Lucy and Ella: vocals
Overview Married duo Jane Dowe and Hank Hofler are both rooted firmly in experimental music, but with the Oh Astro project they continue their move toward odd interpretations of popular forms. Club music, children’s songs, and fragmented samples of pop/rock all intersect on their first full-length album, Champions of Wonder. Jane Dowe has previously released on Mille Plateaux in collaboration with Terre Thaemlitz. She has also exhibited as a sound artist and appeared on countless compilations, including the infamous Deconstructing Beck. She returned to Illegal Art (home of Girl Talk) in 2005 with the debut Oh Astro mini-album, Hello World. Hank Hofler has performed electronic music internationally alongside artists such as Otomo Yoshihide, Oval, Merzbow, Alva Noto, Ikue Mori, Philip Jeck, Sawako, and others. Part-time member Stefen Robinson releases glitch-hop music under the Yea Big moniker for Jib Door. Two of Dowe and Hofler’s children also sing on Champions of Wonder.
Press Quotes “Mimicking the loop-based strategies of pop but giving them her own unique twist, Dowe trades her former ambient experiments for something that’s at the same time accessible and mind boggling, and always enjoyable to hear.” — XLR8R “Shimmering truncated melodies flirting jaggedly like two butterflies dancing until it winds down and tips off.” — Exclaim “Jane Dowe jerry-rigged her own software to create music that mirrored the ghostly clicks, piercing pops, and quark-sized samples of experimental electronica, but loops all the little blurbs as if she were making pop songs.” — CMJ
Selling Points • Oh Astro’s debut received praise from XLR8R, CMJ, Venus, Grooves, Exclaim, and more. The album charted nationally on college radio, in the Top 30 on several stations. • Artwork done by internationally acclaimed artist/producer Terre Thaemlitz. • Includes bonus surround sound mixes. • Press, radio, and new media campaigns via Fanatic Promotion. • Free mp3s will be highlighted on CMJ, XLR8R, and other sites. • Part of a national advertising campaign for Illegal Art (including releases from Realistic, Girl Talk, Oh Astro, and Steinski) throughout Fall/Winter 2007 in Pitchfork, XLR8R, Under the Radar, The Wire, CMJ, Resonance, and more.

Featured Artists Loren Connors: electric guitar Suzanne Langille: vocals
Overview
As Roses Bow is an assembly of Loren Connors’ most melodically rich and stunning miniature compositions. These forty-five pieces are Connors’ complete airs culled from ten albums (eight that are out of print) and two singles, including his groundbreaking Hell’s Kitchen Park (Black Label, 1993), the rare Moonyean (Road Cone, 1994), obscure titles like St. Vincent’s Newsboy Home (Item Recordings, 1998) and Lullaby (Carbon, 2001), plus four unreleased airs. Nearly the entire critically heralded Airs (Road Cone 1999) is re-mastered and included as well.
Press Quotes “Loren Connors isn’t a cult hero for no reason. His music is awe-inspiring … a one-person gentle tornado, Connors can get deep into human feelings with a single guitar.” — Pop Matters “[Connors] is an American original in much the same sense as John Fahey or Jandek, in that he’s chosen a classically American form, in this case the blues, and in true pioneer spirit taken it off somewhere else, crossed it with other forms … and shaped it into a uniquely individual vision of the modern American myth.” — David Keenan, The Wire
Selling Points • A timeless collection of Loren Connors’ most gorgeous and accessible work will please both the diehard fan and the newcomer. • Features four previously unreleased pieces. • Nearly all pieces are culled from out of print albums. Overview “These [songs] could be the whispers of lovers, the reassurances of parents to sleeping children, the prayers of the lost and lonely, or the tremulous breaths of the finally redeemed. It is heady and intoxicating stuff.” — The Wire Over two full-lengths and an EP, Tokyo-based guitarist/singer Hisato Higuchi has shaped an inimitable sound sphere of solitary electric notes that drape across his unearthly moan. Channeling loneliness and desires as elegant six-string tone poems, Higuchi has reached the heights of fellow travelers from Meredith Monk to Charalambides, though Butterfly Horse Street adds an unexpected snarl as Higuchi erupts into a free/noise, wall-of-sound guitar style that echoes the most ecstatic string manipulation of Masayuki Takayanagi or Donald Miller (Borbetomagus). Ferocious and howling, Higuchi still paints desolation, whether bleeding into the red or as hushed beauty.

Featured Artists
Overview
Joey Bruce: guitar, vocals Shane Schuch: guitar, bass, keys, vocals Justin Cason: bass Aaron Venrick: drums Jeremy Griffith: guitar
Somewhere between Interpol’s Turn On the Bright Lights and Minus the Bear’s Menos El Oso is where you’ll find Mouse Fire’s Wooden Teeth. This is a debut album from the band, but make no mistake, the members’ musicianship is markedly mature. Wooden Teeth is a pièce de résistance boasting a caliber of artistry found few other places in independent music today. The band has fused the best of its somber-chic forefathers (Modest Mouse, Cursive) with modern rock ideas, and the result is a striking soundscape ripe with danceable rhythms that will leave you in a delightful state of shock. Put your dancing shoes on, kids. You can’t possibly stand still to music like this.
Press Quotes “Mouse Fire takes the modern touches of indie-pop and applies them to traditional pop song structure. You can hear influences of middle-of-the-road ’70s pop with dancey rhythms, plus the Beatles mixed with contemporary bands as disparate as No Knife and the Dismemberment Plan.” — Tampa Bay Times “The new album features such songs as the haunting ‘To Celebrate a Suicide,’ which is rich with quick drum beats and fast-paced guitar strumming backed by Shuch’s breathy vocals and lyrics … new-age Beatles that everyone can listen to and enjoy.” — Lakeland Ledger “These musicians create moody dance-rock while waving their fret boards and kicking their feet to a synchronized science.” — Reax Magazine
Selling Points • Mouse Fire has played the Ernie Ball Stage on the Warped Tour, won the Bodog Battle of the Bands Round 1, and placed in the Top 15 (out of thousands) in the Calling All Bands Online Contest. • The band has shared the stage with Annuals, Tapes ‘n Tapes, Riddle of Steel, Discover America, and more. • Features two former members of Anderlin (Tooth & Nail). • Promotion by Bear Trap PR. • Featured song on the Vice CD & DVD comps, and music video on Insound. • Ads with Vice, Under the Radar, Harp, Wonka Vision, Alarm, Big Takeover, Skyscraper, Copper Press, Status, Modern Fix, Sentimentalist, Synthesis, and more.

Overview “Geneviève Castrée, a Francophone poet, artist, and singer from Canada, possesses a voice as beautiful and petulant as any major female singer around today … While her sound is the very epitome of lo-fi, and the message of her lyrics inscrutable to my unfortunate English-speaking self, any listener can imagine the lush musical accompaniment that would best suit her tunes … I strongly suggest catching her this time around, before she has the chance to pull a Salinger or Rimbaud on us all.” — PopMatters After having written many war songs and having avoided popular songwriting, Geneviève Castrée decided to write dramatic love songs inspired by the music of Jacques Brel and the novels of Québec writer Réjean Ducharme. The result is eleven love songs, mostly depressing ones. Sometimes comical, mostly bitter.

Overview “Mico de Noche may be a duo, but they’re a voluminous mass together, reminding you that it usually takes four guys to make the commotion they create with two.” — The Stranger
Mico de Noche Cherries Genre: Rock/Metal Label: Australian Cattle God CD: ACG 17 Price Code: O NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA
How the hell do two people make so much noise?!?! Simply put, they try harder and, according to MdN Industries, quality is job one. Formed in early 2001, Mico de Noche has made a point of doing more with guitar and drums than most people do with their entire, pathetic lives. The band’s heavyhanded yet tuneful approach and energetic live show have won fans throughout the states and as far abroad as Sweden and Italy. They have been called metal, punk, sludge, heavy, and dicks. While all of these are at least partially true, no one term (or string of terms, for that matter) can truly describe the Mico de Noche experience. Buy a disc and feel the dark warmth of the band’s sexy magick take over your body.

Overview “Emo’s own Bill Corsello jostles early nineties noise rock with Good Times Crisis Band.” — Austin Chronicle This is songwriter Bill Corsello (Emo’s) in his apologist phase. A complete misanthrope with a universalistic voice, he has assassinated characters—his own and other people’s—in past musical efforts (Monkeyspank, Stress Magnets, Ye Olde Castletons, Vodka Family Winstons). Select a Gather Point is an olive branch extended to those living, dead, sick, young, cuckolded, and raked. A departure from the assembly line of “product,” this recording delivers depth in solid number after number. An intellectual’s brand of rock with a wide array of ideas and interesting structures. A Scrabble players’ brand of rock with a peculiar prolixity and many obscure references all placed on a bed of good, clean post-punk instrumentation.
Selling Points • Lyrics included. • Debut album from well respected Austin songwriter and musician. • Features former members of Monkeyspank, Ye Olde Castletons, Vodka Family Winstons, and Queens of the Stone Age predecessors Stress Magnets. • College radio service by Apples and Cats Media. • 120+ print and web media will be serviced with promotional items. • Ads with Verbicide, Razorcake, Wonka Vision, Magnet, AP, CMJ, and more.

Overview Lick Lick is a five-piece progressive punk band from Austin that features members of 30ftFALL (Texas punk legends), Middlefinger (Mr. Bungle-influenced skacore), Brown Whörnet (perverted classically-inspired art rock), and the Fence Cutters (genre-hopping Americana). Influenced by Devo, The Melvins, The Minutemen, Ruins, and Shellac, the members of Lick Lick share a love of power chords, off-kilter changes, feedback, twang, and new wave throb. Lick Lick’s eponymous debut CD, produced by Tim Gerron (Björk, Snoop Dogg, The Monkees, M.O.D.) is a captivating, unpredictable journey—the songs, which both rock and confuse the listener, feature the intelligent and absurd vocals of Mo Perce and Matt Kelly, the psychotic psychedelia of guitarist Eric Roach, the crispness and complexity of bassist Jason Davis and drummer Philip White, and an occasional burst of Deep Purple-esque organ growl. In a matter of months the intensity and sharpness of Lick Lick’s live shows have earned the group a strong reputation in the competitive Austin club scene, and this is one of the most highly anticipated CD debuts Austin has seen since Spoon.

Minmae ¿Ya te vas? Genre: Alt Rock Label: Greyday Productions CD: GDP 30 Price Code: G NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA
Minmae’s ¿Ya te vas? is the equivalent to listening to a band’s ascent to sonic rock brilliance. Originally recorded in late 2003, it is a fantastically complex yet minimalist experience akin to sitting in a large bubble and watching projections of somebody else’s thoughts unfold around you. The music ebbs and flows as the words and melodies soar when they have no apparent business doing so, and, as it is, can sound touchingly dejected. Greyday Records is proud to reissue these eleven songs, tracing Minmae’s trajectory along the law of accelerating returns, as time is speeding up and chaos has begotten new models of perfection. Four years is an eternity in Minmaeland, and ¿Ya te vas? represents the start of the rebirth from solo project to full band, and a move from the esoteric to the accessible—or at least, the less esoteric.

Overview “The sound would have you believe he’s being backed by a super group made up of members of Arcade Fire and Grizzly Bear.” — Quick Before It Melts At only twenty-one years old, this is Peter Silberman’s fifth release, though only his second under The Antlers moniker. After moving to Manhattan last year, he set up a cramped, makeshift recording studio in his apartment and set to work on what would become The Antlers’ first proper LP, Uprooted, exploring claustrophobia and sleepwalking against a fuzz-folk backdrop. He spent 2006 performing throughout his new home in support of the album, and in Fall 2006, sprawled his equipment on the floor and set to work on In the Attic of the Universe, a concept EP in which he ups the instrumentation to introduce a full rhythm section, Moog, accordion, piano, and a host of others. The result is a sound that revolves around swelling ambience and climactic explosions The Antlers in the vein of Arcade Fire and Sigur Rós alongside Silberman’s voice, a sort of cross between In the Attic of the Jeff Mangum and Jeff Buckley. Recently, The Antlers expanded into a full band, with Nick Shelestak on guitar, keyboard, and laptop; Justin Stivers on bass and backing vocals; and Michael Genre: Alt Rock Label: Fall Records Lerner on drums. After a three-year hiatus, Solitaire is back and is branching out into the realms of indie rock and beyond. Solitaire comes to NAIL via No Karma.
Overview “The band sounds like a cross between Chicago post-rock, the best Galaxie 500 material, and the hope of a better future … these guys’ll rock your house with just over an hour’s worth of the sweetest, most hummable pop this side of perfection.” — Pitchfork After almost ten years since their formation and seven years since their last full-length release, The Buddyrevelles have emerged from the shadows with a carefully crafted album full of driving rhythms, subversive melodies, and thoughtful songs about life, death, love, and the pursuit of middleaged happiness. Don’t Quit represents the refinement and subsequent augmentation of a band that has been under the radar for a bit too long.

Push Pull 3 Genre: Alt Rock Label: Joyful Noise CD: JNR 19 Price Code: H NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA
In a universe of infinite bounds, a band of Mikes (Bridavsky, Hoggatt, Notaro) had the sheer talent and purpose of finding the non-existent edge. This Bloomington three-piece sticks out like a sore thumb in a world of binary song structures and stale, uninspired musical vision. Immediate sounds and complete obliviousness to hipster rock simultaneously offend, seduce, repel, and violate the music snobs of our time. Imagine Cream’s pop structures arranged for the Mahavishnu Orchestra, probing areas untouched by The Wipers, King Crimson, Big Star, or Shellac. Prepare for a space walk or the 1918 flu: hosts, humans, books, films, love, sex, fire, power, and water are all developed into mantras fused within voice, electricity, and air particles. The sonics become tightly wedged between a rock and the roll. Fresh and piping hot, but hard and compact, the direct and spastic onslaught descending from contemporaries thirty years previous leaves room for modern rock absurdity. For better or worse, the band looks to no one else for approval. This Indiana trinity is elemental; the members dig deeper and Push-Pull harder. They say, “Hey, let’s just do this!” We here at Joyful Noise say, “Thank Yahweh.”
Selling Points • Mastered by Bob Weston (Shellac, Rodan, Sebadoh). • Recently completed a tour with Austria’s Valina (54˚40’ or Fight!). • East Coast and Midwest tour in November 2007. • Massive press and radio campaign by Joyful Noise. • MySpace and e-media promotion. • Ads with Verbicide, Modern Fix, Copper Press, Amplifier, The New Scheme, Nuvo, and many more.

Overview
The debut full-length release from Sweden’s latest musical export The Soulshake Express! Drawing on influences as diverse as MC5, Deep Purple, Wolfmother, and the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, these retro rockers infuse their grooves with thundering guitars and a swirling organ. Encompassing all aspects of a great rock record, Heavy Music is sure to please. Having just signed to French label Bad Reputation, the band continues its assault on Europe and is ready to storm the US shores.
Apple of Discord couples winding indie rock guitars with artful dynamic shifts and heartfelt vocals. Lyrically, songwriter James Cuartero mines the stories and experiences of the people in his life: a perspective that has provided plenty of inspiration since Apple of Discord first formed in 1996. The group’s sound has thrived for over a decade, albeit not without a few member changes, and thus Apple of Discord remains an active member of southern New Jersey’s dynamic D.I.Y. scene. The band will tour strategically in 2007 and 2008 to support the release of You’re Not the Answer.

Fred Thomas Flood Genre: Alt Rock Label: Magic Marker Records CD: MMK 44 Price Code: O NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA
STREET DATE NOVEMBER 20, 2007
Though more renown for the work he’s done with his band Saturday Looks Good To Me, Michigan insomniac Fred Thomas has been slowly chiseling out a solo career for the last five years by way of living room tours, awkward opening spots, and late-night CD burning marathons. Regardless of scale, the scope of his work makes it hands-down the best—eleven songs played almost entirely by Thomas, with some friends and neighbors helping out. A step away from the ultra-bubblegum glitter of SLGTM, but still rooted in the magic of the pop song, the music on Flood is heartbreakingly serious, ridiculously personal, and will stick in your head all day. Akin to the hyper-wordy, spiritual side of Neutral Milk Hotel or the experimental lo-fidelity alchemy of The Animal Collective, these songs clatter and shake with hope and pain, always on the verge of falling into themselves, coming out of a two-minute pop song into a fuzz explosion or a five-minute drum circle. The album is strong and deliberate, honing years of four-track sonnets to bring this special breed of basement heartstring pop music into a new, bold place.
Selling Points • Fred Thomas is the lead member of popular band Saturday Looks Good To Me. • Tour will follow album release. • Full radio mailing and follow up by Vitriol Promotion. • Full press mailing and follow up in-house. • Ads with Big Takeover, Magnet, Insound, and Pitchfork.

Steve Lehman Quintet On Meaning Genre: Jazz Label: Pi Recordings CD: PIE 25 Price Code: Q NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA
Featured Artists Steve Lehman: alto saxophone Jonathan Finlayson: trumpet Chris Dingman: vibraphone Drew Gress: bass Tyshawn Sorey: drums
Overview
Pi Recordings is pleased to announce the release of On Meaning, the highly anticipated new recording from Steve Lehman’s critically acclaimed quintet. Widely regarded as one of today’s bracingly original young composers, Lehman combines groove-oriented musical content with highly contrapuntal, asymmetrical, and non-repetitive structural devices. Imagining his music in this way, Lehman creates elaborate formal works that remain rooted in the physicality of live performance and the visceral nature of urban rhythm. Each of On Meaning’s eight compositions addresses the challenge of creating fresh environments for modern improvisers and advances a unique and meticulously crafted vision of compositional form, harmony, rhythm, and orchestration. Throughout the disc, Lehman’s cutting-edge compositional voice is brought to life by his remarkable quintet, featuring performer/improvisers who represent the absolute stateof-the-art on their respective instruments. Lehman’s own performance, on alto saxophone, bristles with the unique combination of explosiveness and precision that has been his trademark since he exploded onto New York’s creative music scene in 2004. Much like the abstract and darkly compelling compositions of On Meaning, Lehman’s work as a saxophonist—combining a highly advanced harmonic language, microtonal playing, extended techniques, and a deeply rooted rhythmic sense—positions him, at twenty-eight, as one of the most significant voices to emerge in creative music in recent memory.
Press Quotes “One of the most exciting saxophone voices on the current scene.” — The Wire “It is difficult to think of another musician in Lehman’s age group (or a generation ahead) that is making music at this level.” — Signal To Noise “Bracing and fiercely imagined.” — New York Times

The Fathoms Fathom This! Genre: Alt Rock/Surf Label: Musick Recordings CD: MSR 29 Price Code: Q NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA
It’s time once again to quiver and shake with the East Coast kings of surf ‘n’ stomp, as The Fathoms return with their first album in almost ten years! Known to many as one of the best modern surf bands in the world, The Fathoms take the classic 1960s surf sound (think The Astronauts) and infuse it with early UK beat (think The Shadows), rockabilly (think Johnny Burnette & His Rock ‘n’ Roll Trio), fuzz-garage (think Davie Allan & The Arrows), and even a bit of ’50s Latin rock (think Ritchie Valens’ early instro sides). Coming from Boston, a city known more for clam chowder than for “hangin’ ten,” the group is the brainchild of guitarist Frankie “Crankie” Blandino, whose infectious guitar picking is simply amazing with its wet-reverb tones and southern-fried twang. Blandino is joined by the rest of The Fathoms, who are all musicians of the highest caliber: Jerry Miller on rhythm guitar, Paul Tomasello on bass, Doug Hinman on drums, and the band’s secret weapon: Dave Sholl on saxophone. Sholl’s distinctive sleazy sax gives the band a layer of R&B that not only sets it apart from the run-of-the-mill surf groups, but also makes it the most authentic-sounding band in the genre. You’ll swear it’s the summer of 1963 all over again!
Selling Points • The Fathoms’ first album in almost ten years! • Goldmine lists The Fathoms as one of the Top 40 Best Surf Bands of All Time. • Comprehensive press campaign directed at both national and regional publications. • Comprehensive radio campaign directed at college stations and specialty shows. • MySpace and online blitz. • Ads with Big Takeover, Amplifier, MRR, Carbon 14, Dagger, The Continental, and more.

MGR guitarist Mike Gallagher—of renowned dirge architects ISIS—unveils a compendium of sparse ruminations culled from years of underground musical experience. Gallagher has developed a style characterized by dense, sustained textures coupled with a penchant for the subtle melodicism associated with the postSabbath riff. MGR (an acronym for Mustard Gas and Roses, which Gallagher borrowed from a line of Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse Five), is an emotionally charged amalgamation of sounds that, much to its credit, refuses to fit neatly into any particular category.
Selling Points • Vinyl version limited to 500 copies. • Mike Gallagher, who plays guitar in ISIS, has released two records as MGR on Neurot: Nova Lux and Impromptu (feat. David Scott Stone). • US promotion campaign by Speakeasy PR.
Overview Maninkari’s’ first full release is no less then a gorgeous soft cacophony of epic post rock drift and minimal jazzy shuffle. Using light tribal percussion clouds and swirling melodies, songs subtly and dynamically build, flow, and spiral. Maninkari adds more textures and tonalities with various Middle Eastern instruments— like cymbalom and santoor—resulting in adventurous, exploratory new soundscapes. This is truly something unforeseen and thoroughly special!
Selling Points • First Maninkari CD, released in September of this year, featured remixes by Justin Broadrick of Jesu and Robin Rimbaud of Scanner. • Maninkari’s previous band, Bathyscaphe, got its start doing soundtrack work for film directors such as Lionel Delplanque, Georges Zsiga, and Dan Salzmann.

Overview Much like the bamboo plants that dominate Japan’s landscape, Shuta Hasunuma’s piano work on his new album OK Bamboo has an enduring, simple elegance. OK Bamboo’s title and compositions are the result of Hasunuma’s interest in the ancient relationship between Japan and bamboo. Each track flits and twitters, growing and changing without warning. The result is a collection of enchantingly beautiful compositions full of meticulous details. This perfectly executed collage of digital and organic sounds immediately feels familiar and intimate, as it demands your attention.

Overview Two Point Discrimination marks Goldmund’s (a.k.a. Keith Kenniff) third release after his highly praised debut Corduroy Road. Part of Western Vinyl’s Portrait Series, this collection features eleven short pieces for solo piano, focusing on the sensation of touch and its relationship to sound. With emphasis on restraint and space, at times almost crossing into the inaudible, Kenniff’s focus is not only on the sounds that are presented to the listener in an auditory environment, but how those sounds are manifest physically. Such detail is brought out by the close micing of the piano, so as to bring the listener right up to the hammers as they strike the strings in the spirit of composers such as Howard Skempton and Morton Feldman.

Overview Christina Kubisch is a first generation sound artist of the highest order. She may now be most famously known for her Electrical Walks, which she started in 1981. Invisible/Inaubible: 5 Electrical Walks is her first collection of compositions utilizing material recorded during Electrical Walks, public walks with custom-made sensitive wireless headphones by which aboveground and underground electromagnetic fields are detected, amplified, and made audible. The transmission of sound is accomplished by a built-in set of induction coils that respond to the electromagnetic waves in our environment. The palette of these noises, their timbre, and their volume vary from site to site and country to country. They have one thing in common: they are ubiquitous, even where one would not expect them. Wireless communication systems, anti-theft security devices, surveillance cameras, cell phones, streetcar cables, automated teller machines—all these things create electrical fields that are hidden under cloaks of invisibility, but have incredible presence. Electrical Walks is an invitation to a special kind of investigation of city centers (or other locations). With the magnetic headphones Christina Kubisch and a map of the environs, upon which possible routes and especially interesting electrical fields are Invisible/Inaudible: 5 Electrical marked, the visitor can set off on his own or in a group. The five compositions on this CD are based Walks Genre: Experimental on numerous live recordings of electromagnetic fields, made between 2003 and 2007, in the cities of Birmingham, Chicago, Taipei, Paris, Bremen, Riga, Tokyo, Madrid, London, New York, Berlin and Label: Important Records CD: IPT 167 others. Overview “The most consistently rewarding of the first-generation sound-artists.” — Keith Fullerton Whitman
Christina Kubisch Night Flights Genre: Experimental Label: Important Records CD: IPT 168 Price Code: P NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA
Christina Kubisch belongs to the first generation of sound artists. Trained as a composer, she studied painting, music (flute and composition), and electronics in Hamburg, Graz, Zürich, and Milan, where she graduated. Her work can be described as the “synthesis of arts”—the discovery of acoustic space and the dimension of time in the visual arts on the one hand, and a redefinition of relationships between material and form on the other. Kubisch is best known for artistically and innovatively using techniques such as magnetic induction and ultraviolet light to create and realize her work. Since the 1970s, Kubisch has been experimenting with electromagnetic induction and was one of the first to use this method for creating sound installations. Some of her most well-known works include the Electrical Walks series, where audience members wear magnetic headphones, specially designed by Kubisch, with built-in coils that respond to electrical fields in the environment. Tapping into the electrical fields that result from light systems, anti-theft security devices, surveillance cameras, cell phones, computers, antennae, automated teller machines, and other electric devices, she uses these visible sources to create unique and new sensory environmental experiences.
Selling Points • As a first generation sound artist, Christina Kubisch’s historical relevance and influence is immeasurable. • Kubisch has shown work at major international exhibitions and festivals (Venice Benniale, documenta 8, Kassel, Ars Electronica, Linz, Sydney Benniale, Sonar, Barcelona, and Sonic Boom, London). She has received numerous grants and awards, and has released music on Cramps Records and Edition RZ.

Overview “There’s something both timeless and very new about the masses of controlled and overdubbed noise laid down by this unit; it’s loud and glorious and it somehow seems to actually have a physical glow when it’s coming out of stereo speakers, like the atmosphere of 1972 vintage space rock, the sludge-of-the-earth amptones of Black Sabbath, and the endless buzzing hum of The Theater of Eternal Music all rolled into one.” — Perfect Sound Forever
Birchville Cat Motel Seventh Ruined Hex Genre: Experimental Label: Important Records CD: IPT 169 Price Code: P NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA
A further step in Birchville Cat Motel’s ruminations on time-space distortion, featuring the additional mystikal talents of fellow gravity destroyer Matthew Bower (Hototogisu/Sunroof!). Seventh Ruined Hex presents like a lonesome planet occasionally struck with super-sized fragments of space detritus, but for the most part just haning around, spinning on its axis, and doing fuck-all. Like the deepest love, it is warm yet tenuous, filled with the ever-present potential for loss and brutality. More in line with the estranged love-tangle of the Birchville classic Chi Vampires than the most recent befuddling hyperspace rock-overload of recent albums like Our Love Will Destroy the World and Birds Call Home Their Dead.

Overview “The Opalio brothers are among the most talented artists on the planet. Roberto and Maurizio are the new kings of the solar system, and their reign will be nothing but superb. This is essential music.” — Brad Rose, Editor, Foxy Digitalis CD reissue of the third installment in the Cosmic Debris split art/LP series set up by Maurizio & Roberto Opalio, a.k.a. My Cat Is An Alien, on Opax Records. Volume three sees the two space brothers from Torino alongside Japanese cult musician and dark shaman Keiji Haino. Imagine a cosmic bomb exploding in your brain, and you’ll have an approximate idea of this collaborative release. With two long tracks recorded during live performances in their hometowns, MCIAA and Haino conspire to offer you totally uncompromising music. Haino’s track is one of the highlights of his long career, and MCIAA’s track is one of the brothers’ most ass-kicking for sure.

Overview “Fabio Orsi structures a piece of crystalline beauty, embedding the themes of collected worldwide folk music beneath a mire of harmony and emotion.” — Boomkat In only two years, Fabio Orsi has become one of the most promising and representative voices of the entire Italian independent scene. This began with the excellent vinyl LP Osci (SmallVoices, 2005) and was followed by the famous split CD For Alan Lomax (A Silent Place, 2006) with Italian duo My Cat Is An Alien, as well as a collaboration with Gianluca Becuzzi called Muddy Speaking Ghosts Through My Machines (A Silent Place, 2006). Today, as final confirmation of his talent, A Silent Place is proud to present this new Fabio Orsi solo venture. Find Electronica is a wonderful album structured as a long drone/ambient suite divided in two portions that are frames of the articulated central track. Abstract and emotional, deep and dreamy, Find Electronica is a great album and an essential step in Orsi’s ascending career.

Overview “Keith Wood of Hush Arbors works with Brad Rose in this band and it sits at their mid-point, halfway between Keith’s more song-based approach and Brad’s atmospheric instrumentals … A feeling of warm enclosure in the pink skies of autumn dusk settles in The Golden Oaks’ Autumn Testament. A perfect blend of folk-inspired guitar, sighing atmospheres, and almost-heard sung voices.” — The Unbroken Circle

Comprised of Brad Rose (The North Sea) and Keith Wood (Hush Arbors), The Golden Oaks features road show magicians springing forth candles from wooded sanctuaries. Overview Black Magic Disco is a new all-star band featuring Tom Greenwood (Jackie-O Motherfucker), Maurizio & Roberto Opalio (My Cat Is An Alien), and Ramona Ponzini (Painting Petals On Planet Ghost, Praxinoscope). The project was born when Greenwood invited the Opalio brothers and Ponzini to perform with him for two months, touring throughout Europe, in May/June 2005. As one can imagine, the result was killer. The music that came out of these live performances was totally explosive, combining Ponzini’s Japanese vocals and hypnotic chimes with Greenwood’s psych-blues guitar attitude and wild turntablism, all layered over MCIAA’s alien cosmic flux of electric guitars, space toys, and percussion. This debut CD represents a unique chance to experience almost eighty minutes of that pure, magical live action, divided into four long tracks taken from the original live recordings. Black Magic Disco’s logo comes from the pencil of Roberto Opalio; the gatefold jacket CD artwork, curated by MCIAA, contains band photos taken during the live performances.
