Overview Barnacled’s new full-length, and first outing for ESP-Disk’, is a rollicking, propulsive offering featuring the band in some of its most intricate formations. This deftly arranged record follows Barnacled as it tightens itself into high corners, only to purposely fall down, find new ground, and pick itself back up again. This work is highly playful, even at its most intense—and it does get intense, with saxophone battles surging over electronics and highly distorted accordion fire offerings. Intertwining rhythms and melody lines revolve around a pulse that creates a new frame of reference while also complicating it. This music invites deep listening, and rewards the curious. Often it is simply mesmerizing—essentially what adventurous minds have come to expect from the legendary ESP-Disk’ oeuvre.

Thirteen-year-old guitarist Sean Levitt was improvising on a borrowed guitar at the Central Park fountain for a young attentive audience when he was spotted by ESP-Disk’. While being auditioned, Sean mentioned his musical family, which included his father, drummer Al Levitt; his mother, vocalist Stella Levitt; his 15-year-old drummer brother George; his singing sisters Michele (16), Minou (14), and Teresa (11); and his two younger brothers Billy (9) and Robin (6) who had not as yet chosen their instruments, although Billy was convinced that if he could get his hands on a flute, he could play it.

Overview Alan Sondheim was the young, exuberant leader of a pack of improvisers in their communal loft in Providence, Rhode Island. Undaunted by attempts to categorize electronic music as the province of academic tinkerers, or a cold, unfriendly realm with its own authorities, audiences, and mystique, the artists plunged fearlessly, joyously, and unselfconsciously into the medium, discovering new ways to express their ideas. Their ESP CDs, Ritual-All-7-70 and T’Other Little Tune, merge free improvisation and electronic instrumentation.

Overview

Yximalloo Unpop Genre: Experimental Label: ESP-Disk’ CD: ESP 4047 Price Code: M (SRP $14.99) Digipak; Box Lot 30 NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA

Yximalloo is a one-man mysterious phenomenon. He has maintained obscurity, even though he has been making and recording music since the 1970s and his champions include artists as diverse as Jad Fair (Half Japanese), Momus, and members of Animal Collective. This is Yximalloo’s first recording in nine years, and the first to include his one-man-band of guitar, laptop, and vocals. It builds on primitive trance-like rhythms mixed with offbeat pop sensibilities by way of crude electronic sampling. A true masterpiece; a modern-day Moondog off the streets of present-day Tokyo, London, New York, and wherever you happen to be.

Overview Locke, a hip-hop artist from Spokane, has infused his new album with the DIY ethos, energy, and passion of punk and hardcore music. Instrumentals from Muneshine and Nickels lay a solid foundation of beats, sounds, and textures. Lyrically, the album covers a great deal of ground, from high-fives to family divorce. Guests Ohmega Watts, Raashan Ahmad, Sentence, James Two, Effort, and Tulsi all perform with enthusiasm.

Selling Points • Brethren of the Free Spirit is James Blackshaw and Jozef van Wissem. • Promotional mailing by Important Records. • Ads with The Wire.

Overview Brethren of the Free Spirit is guitarist/composer James Blackshaw and lutenist/ composer Jozef van Wissem. Named after a cult of 13th century Northern European religious heretics, this duo plays with an appropriately zealous intensity. Brethren of the Free Spirit debuted in New York, then went on a crusade through the Lowlands, Belgium, Spain, Ireland, and London, even appearing on the Dutch National VPRO TV show Vrije Geluiden. Intricate phrases circle and spiral in on themselves, and in the end it’s the subtle shifts in rhythm and tonal coloration that provide a kind of transcendence in a sea of repetition. The drawings on the cover, by Belgian brethren Wouter Van Haelemeesch, reference Greek myths as well as medieval alchemical emblems by the likes of Michael Maier.

Annie Bandez (Crass, NWW, Coil, C93), La Fever Lit could be considered the most focused Larsen album yet, but at the same time it’s also their most experimental and floating. “Puzzle-pop doesn’t get much more puzzling than on Great Bouncing Icebergs, the long-awaited album by the madcap Philly troupe Whales and Cops … there’s a very real undertow of pop here, from wind-swept strings and pristine female backing vocals to buzzing and bouncing synths. Having multiple multi-instrumentalists is key for Whales and Cops, and Great Bouncing Icebergs certainly benefits from so much rapid-fire scenechanging and many kaleidoscopic build-ups.” — Philadelphia Weekly

Overview Fan of Friends is a quartet that plays folk music with a great deal of respect for the old and new traditions of the genre. Featuring banjo, guitar, violin, and cello, Fan of Friends creates dark, somber songs that fuse the gritty urban landscape of the band’s Philadelphia home with Appalachian folk and string-quartet classical music. With three of its members alternating between lead vocal duties, FOF songs show a wide diversity while maintaining a sharp consistency. After almost three years of playing shows, an appearance at the Philadelphia Popped! Festival, and a 7” vinyl single, this is Fan of Friends’ first album and a co-release with Contraphonic, who has released the two solo albums from Joshua Marcus.

THE BARRY SISTERS OUR WAY

Press Quotes “The Barry Sisters were the first to bring popular adaptations of Yiddish folk songs to a mass audience. It took just one record or so for them to be established as the United States’ leading exponents of Yiddish Swing. From that point on, their tremendous abilities—as international pop singers, a hugely successful sister act, and two fun, charming beauties—quickly led to international stardom … the perfect pop blend of fun and first-rate talent.” — Vintage Lady

The book features the Barry Sisters and other Jewish artists of that era. • Anticipated coverage in Fader, Flaunt, Black Book, and more. • Expected play on NPR. • Promotion to Jewish press and music/pop culture blogs.

Overview Born to Yiddish speaking immigrants in the Bronx, the Barry Sisters rose to the forefront of the Jewish-American music world in the 1930s through their early recordings with RCS Victor and their association with the biggest names on the Second Avenue scene. They became the official voices of the Yiddish Swing Craze in the ’40s and ’50s during their tenure on Sam Medoff’s radio shows, and went on to release a slew of singles and full-length LPs that garnered them recognition beyond the confines of the Jewish musical community. Our Way is the eleventh and final album by the Barry Sisters, released by Mainstream Records in 1973. On this album, the sisters took on the ’20s pop chestnut “Tea For Two” and used Yiddish to return the vanilla Perry Como smash “It’s Impossible” to its Mexican bolero roots. They raided Hollywood for “Love Story” (imagine Ryan O’Neal crooning in Yiddish at the bedside of a dying Ali McGraw), raided Broadway for “Cabaret” and “Alice Blue Gown,” and turned out what just might be—second only to the version Cuban audio priestess La Lupe did just three years earlier—the most liberating version ever of the Sinatra staple “My Way.” So they didn’t sing “What’s Goin’ On” or “I Wanna Be Your Dog” (which, for what it’s worth, would have been called “Ikh vil zein dein hoont”). The effect was still the same: seventies America woke up in a Technicolor Yiddish dream.

“Loaded with killer Yiddish versions of ’70s radio hits, Our Way is begging to be re-discovered by a new generation of listeners.” — All About Jazz

AfricanAmerican music scholar Lynn Abbott’s years of research have produced a remarkable biographical study, finally shining a light onto the preaching, healing, and guitar playing-ministry of this groundbreaking performer, whose revivals and appearances were as well known and anticipated in his time as those of any other sacred or secular musician or performer. Press Quotes “Strike a Match combines the elements of indie rock, shoegazer, and experimental music into an easy to swallow depth charge. Required listening for fans of the post-punk era … the perfect playlist for a walk in a wet garden at night.” — MyMixTapes.org [10/10 rating] “An astoundingly accomplished and confident piece of music from a band with a bright future. The record shows remarkably mature songwriting and very strong musicianship, and there’s a raw energy and very honest feel that permeates every song on the record. Strike a Match is so deep and diverse that in all likelihood there is something on this album for everyone to enjoy, and for those who love the louder excesses of shoegazing rock in the vein of My Bloody Valentine, this album is a must hear.” — Absolute Punk [90% rating] “Like early New Order, without the techno fascination but with a great lead singer.” — New York Times

Selling Points • First major full-length release, though the band has received tons of awesome press (already!) • Produced by Eric Spring, who produced the latest Mobius Band album. • Features Jeremy Alisauskas from Unto Ashes (Projekt Records). • Numerous mentions in SPIN, Rolling Stone, Drowned In Sound, NME, Time Out NY, New York Metro, and many music blogs. • Have played festivals such as Pop Noise, ATJ, NEMO, and CMJ multiple times. • Have shared stages with The Fever, World/Inferno Friendship Society, Rainer Maria, Sonic Boom (of Spacemen 3), and more. • Special promo label sampler CD pitched to press to hype the band’s appearance at CMJ 2008 showcase. • Core radio to be serviced by AAM Sunday Service. • Promo campaign to be serviced to national and international press outlets by Clairecords. • Ads with Under the Radar, Skyscraper, and more.

Overview Autodrone, formed in 2002, is based on a mutual love of dream pop and early ’90s Brit rock. Seamlessly melding the sonic dynamics of noise and pop with throbbing bass lines, jagged synths, searing atmospheric guitars, and urgent banshee vocals, Autodrone has no problem reaching out from the stage, grabbing you by the throat, and screaming in your face— even when they are only whispering. Their self-released EPs have quickly gained the attention of UK and US press, garnering universally favorable reviews while easily selling out of print. Strike a Match is Autodrone’s latest studio effort. Their debut full-length is darker, denser, and more experimental—yet catchier and more hookladen—than any of their previous work. The album has received a deluge of critical acclaim and made it onto multiple Best of 2007 lists, though it was unreleased at the time!

Press Quotes “[A] breath of fresh air.” — Pitchfork [on Sunkissed]

Selling Points • Out of print for some time—this is the first time the album is available worldwide. • Previously released only in Japan, but enjoyed sales (collectively) of nearly 10,000 units. • Debut album Sunkissed (Morr Music) has sold over 15,000 units worldwide since 2002. • Compilation appearances with Sting, Björk, Massive Attack, Portishead, and more. • Core radio to be serviced by AAM Sunday Service. • Promo campaign to national and international press outlets by Clairecords. • Ads with Signal To Noise, Under the Radar, Skyscraper, and more.

Guitar Honeysky

Overview Clairecords is incredibly overjoyed to present two albums from German/Japanese duo Guitar for the first time! Honeysky and Saltykisses were first released (and available) only in Japan via the Third-Ear label. Issued in 2004 & 2005 respectively, 5,000 copies of each were pressed. Honeysky is now completely sold out, while Saltykisses is very close. Honeysky is considered to be “the most straight shoegazer-style album Guitar ever did”; its tracks alternate between introspective laptop folk and full-on walls of layered guitar shoegazer bliss.

Guitar Saltykisses Genre: Alt Rock Label: Clairecords CD: CLE 79 Price Code: M (SRP $14.99) Digipak; Box Lot 30 NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA

• Very nearly out of print, this is the first time the album is available worldwide.

Overview Saltykisses is a more pop approach to shoegaze (perhaps if Brian Wilson and Kevin Shields were one). Neither it nor Honeysky will disappoint fans of the band’s beloved Morr Music album Sunkissed. Clairecords will issue Guitar’s unreleased album It’s Sweet To Do Nothing in February 2009. Currently, the band is working on two new albums—one with a blues influence, and the other with a world/traditional Japanese influence.

Overview Clairecords is excited to present the debut album from Gainesville’s most promising young, fresh fellows. Inspired by everyone from Ride and Guided By Voices to Teenage Fanclub and Wire, taking cues from the likes of Dinosaur Jr. and Sebadoh, Averkiou is the classic indie rock band that you’ve always loved—you just haven’t heard ‘em yet. The result of two-and-a-half turbulent years of teeth-gnashing frustration, Throwing Sparks was hardly an easy project in the making. A modern indie rock masterpiece clocking in at a scorching 22 minutes, it will rock you like a category-5 cyclone. You’d best not blink. Press Quotes “Walker was a visionary, and this album shows it.” — All Music Guide

Selling Points • Never before reissued until now, and available only on LP. • Liner notes by Peter Walker and Ben Chasny of Six Organs of Admittance. • Mastered directly from original analog tapes by Fantasy Studio veteran Paul Stubblebine. • Features never-before-seen band photos. • RIYL: Sandy Bull, Jack Rose, John Fahey, Six Organs of Admittance. • Blast to blogs that specialize in folk music, vinyl, record collectors, and alternative music. • Copies to publications that review vinyl, and to specialty radio.

Overview Peter Walker was the quintessential psych-folk guitar player to come out of the ’60s. Revered by Timothy Leary, who had him program the music for his TURN-ONS, Walker was one of the first to take the Indian tradition of ragas and channel them through the guitar into a sound that is pure heaven. His exotic, state-of-the-art finger-picking transcends description and has influenced such artists as Ben Chasny of Six Organs of Admittance. This album, never before reissued on CD or LP, is a beautiful moment in time.

Press Quotes “This sweet-voiced angel, who even wears wings, [is] one of Portland’s quirkier offerings and one of its greatest unknown pop treasures.” — Willamette Week “I’m struck by [Grey Anne’s] original voice, and by that I don’t mean her vocal mechanism but her whole poetic/music/lyrical outlook.” — Musical Oozings

Selling Points • Recorded and mixed at Edison’s Elephant and Jackpot Studios by Anne Adams, Al-Gene Hall, Leviethan Cecil, and Jon Cohrs. • Mastered at Spleenless Mastering by Jon Cohrs. • Backing vocals provided by HUSH recording artist Nick Jaina. • Voted one of Willamette Week’s Most Anticipated Albums of 2008. • Listed as “highly anticipated” by the Portland Mercury. • Press, radio, and blog PR campaigns run in-house.

Overview Grey Anne’s music is a magical thing, inhabiting a realm of landscapes and dreams, heartbreak and rhyme scheme. It’s also fraught with emotional contradiction. But such themes are a natural outpouring of musician Anne Adams’ unique mix of life experience. A sunny Disney childhood in Florida must have influenced Adams’ perfectionist, surrealist stage shows. Yet the ocean landscape of her later Anacortes home, as well as a maritime Newfoundland heritage, tempers her songs with a sense of the sea’s bleak beauty, hardship, and isolation. Adams’ angelic harmonies blossomed from choral training in a church boarding school; meanwhile, so did her subtly defiant wit and philosophical ambivalence—a backlash against repressive rules that forbade radios and even handholding. One can sense, even in her simplest of songs, that Adams’ freedom of expression is hard-fought, overwrought, and dearly cherished. In November 2008, Portland’s Greyday Records will release Grey Anne’s debut album, Facts n Figurines. Buoyed by ambient loops and layers of the instruments at hand—any combination of guitar, accordion, kalimba, and percussion—the album swoons, pines, rebukes, and absolves, but always with a twist of mysterious, poetic whimsy. Performing since 2002, Adams made her name as the mainstay of sometime-band, sometime-solo-act Per Se. Her unique music and enchanting performances gradually established her as a Portland musical darling, and her upcoming album release was listed among the “Most Anticipated of 2008” in the Willamette Week and Portland Mercury. A unique expression of Grey Anne’s quirky outlook and colorful past, Facts n Figurines is a debut album worthy of expectation—a curio case of verbal acrobatics, emotional intimacy, and sonic sorcery.

Press Quotes “The perfect balance between progressive metal and ballsy punk ‘n’ roll, each song features just enough nuances to make the air guitarist in everyone freak out and wonder how the fuck they pulled it off … It’s exciting to hear a band revel in their own technical brilliance yet still put something onto the table that will clearly jump off, kick you in the short and curlies, and throw the most demonic horns in the process.” — Exclaim! “Bionic’s mix of hot and raw hard rock, garage, and punk has all the makings of being a sure thing when it comes to rocking a crowd. Black Blood is an outstanding disc full of some of the nastiest whiskey and beer-chugging uptempo rockers to rear their heads. Between all the high-quality rock going on here and singer Jonathan Cummins’ wild growls and shrieks, Black Blood is just awesome. ” — NOW Magazine [NNNN]

“Hard driving psychedelic blues rock, Mudhoney going all ’70s hard rock with a bath full of scorpions and road-racing the devil’s black limo while still finding the time to get all prog on his evil horns. This rocks! This seriously rocks!” — The Organ “Their creative songwriting is in full effect, with songs that fall into classicrock structures but also display the chunky precision of bands such as the Jesus Lizard, augmented by the band’s overall tightness.” — Eye Weekly [HHHH]

Selling Points • 180-gram vinyl includes digital download card. • Features former Doughboys member Jonathan Cummins. • Guests include members of The Besnard Lakes, A Silver Mt. Zion, Land of Talk, and Tricky Woo. • Recorded by Jace Lasek of The Besnard Lakes. • US tour in early 2009. • Nominated for Canada’s Gamiq Awards for Best Rock Album. • RIYL: early Queens of the Stone Age, MC5, The Jesus Lizard, Torche, Qui. • Full US and European radio tracking and publicity in online and print media. • Compilation of Signed By Force releases to be sent to college radio and retail. • Ads with key US and European print and online media.

Overview Black Blood marks the third installment in the Bionic discography and is by far their best and most aggressive moment yet. The new album sees the band breaking new ground with a hard, brutalizing mix of punk meets ’70s rock with stabs of Devo and psychedelia, while still keeping the explosive, juggernaut intensity for which their live shows are renowned. On top of singer/guitarist Jonathan Cummins being a former member of the legendary punk rock outfit The Doughboys, they’ve enlisted the musical help of friends in the burgeoning Montreal musical community like The Besnard Lakes, A Silver Mt. Zion, Land of Talk, Tricky Woo, Xavier Caffeine, and even a marching band complete with cheerleaders. Make no bones about it—Black Blood is as rocking as it gets, but manages to push the envelope and prove that loud rock music can evolve out of the mire.

Overview It’s been said that desperate times breed desperate music, and if the early blues taught us anything, the same could be said about geography. A border town hugging the peninsula of Detroit, Windsor is as desperate as a town can get. Nothing good comes out of this town … nothing but the damage-inducing heaviosity of Fiftywatthead, that is. Overview Nutsak is indeed a mixed bag of nuts: a francophone, an anglophone, an Arab, and a Jew coming together to make music like a microcosm of a utopian society. Nutsak’s debut single contains two original compositions. The A-side is a Shalabi instrumental that is fairly indicative of the Nutsak sound: a highly energetic and somewhat manic number that has all the players biting into it with wild abandon. The B-side is the Chris Burns-penned “Last Train to Nutsak, New Jersey.” While its title pays homage to The Monkees, the music is more of a wink to Motörhead, particularly in the bridge where Shalabi lets loose some unbelievably scorching solos.

Press Quotes “The often dismal character of the Motor City is known for inspiring a host of instrumental techno artists, but Chiasm (Emileigh Rohn) chooses to express her angst through very intimate and intense audio exorcisms that juxtapose her ethereal, haunting vocals and confrontational snarls with murky, minimalist industrial sounds. Disorder, her debut release, makes an immediate impression, displaying an honest tenderness despite its tough and tense musicality. From the murky title track to the kinetic, confrontational ‘Fight’ or the lonely, longing ‘Formula,’ Disorder is a revealing audio diary full of electro energy and honest emotion that gives the idea of ‘girl power’ a whole new spin.” — CMJ “Emileigh Rohn’s music is one of the often overlooked treasures of the dark electro/industrial genre.” — LiarSociety

Press Quotes “The group has in the past drawn comparisons to Sonic Youth and Yo La Tengo for their penchant for distorted unpredictability among stirring melodies. We now find them in a different, somewhat overcast mode, like This Mortal Coil stripped of their heavy gothic overtones.” — Dusted

Selling Points • Recorded by John Askew (Dodos). • LP on 180-gram audiophile quality vinyl comes with free digital download, including bonus track. • Sixth album from a band with a large international fan base. • Full tour in Winter/Spring 2009. • Mailing to major radio and media outlets.

LP: JLO 71 Price Code: O (SRP $13.99) LP Jacket; Box Lot 30 NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA

Overview Carrying on in the glorious tradition of Midnight Star and drunken satyrs, Wow & Flutter have seen fit to evoke the story of Midas in the title to their latest album, a collection of Phrygian mode jams, drones, and ditties. Recorded intermittently over several months by John Askew (Tracker) at Type Foundry in Portland. Guest musicians include Victor Nash (Point Juncture, WA) on trumpet, Hiram Lucke (Harvey Girls) on sax, and Melissa Rodenbeek (Harvey Girls) on backing vocals.

Track Listing Red Face • Car Crash • Solar • Eclipse • A Little Help • Heaven • Flat White • Sugarbush • AM/FM • A Fine Line

Key Markets Hometown: Portland. Also: New York, Austin, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Vancouver, Boston

Press Quotes “The tunes on OCMC’s self-titled ‘07 EP (released on buzz-label Bladen County Records) are pretty darn rockin’—drawing on the late-’60s guitar meltdowns of White Albumera Beatles and even harder edges à la Thin Lizzy, not to mention Nuggets-esque psychedelia and garage-leaning grooves.” — Willamette Week

Selling Points • Produced and engineered by Skyler Norwood (Blind Pilot, Talkdemonic). • Features Alex Ellis from The Builders and the Butchers on bass. • Early release at MusicFestNW showcase in Portland, September 5, 2008. • Press/media PR by 2:30 Publicity. • Radio promotion to college markets by Bladen County Media.

Overview The seeds of Oh Captain My Captain were planted in the summer of 1998 in Portland when high school students Jesse Bettis (vocals/guitar) and Josh Spacek (guitar) began practicing together. The group’s current incarnation was assembled in 2007 when Spacek met drummer and Bladen County Records owner Joe Bowden, who brought along Alex Ellis from The Builders and the Butchers to take over bass duties. OCMC began tracking most of this album live at Miracle Lake Studios, where Skyler Norwood produced and engineered the recordings. Later, Annalisa Tornfelt, Nathan Langston, Ian Krist, and Mike Kitson provided strings, vibes, bells, and toy piano.

Press Quotes “You can hear the grandiose Bowie aesthetic fixed with T. Rex’s vocal onslaught and rimmed with Pink Floyd’s cinematic vision in Everything, Now!’s more recent efforts.” — Paste

Selling Points • Newest and most accessible work to date from Everything, Now! • Tours planned in support of release. • Full press, radio, and e-media campaigns by Soapbox Promotion and MFT Records. • Ads with MusicalFamilyTree.com, Nuvo, and more

Overview After bringing their delirious mixture of insane psych-pop melody, hero worship, and obtuse hidden meanings to sweaty bars everywhere, EN! has spent the last year holed up in the studio, communicating with spirits from the deepest, weirdest sectors of the galaxy. These spirits have a story to tell, and this first volume of the story sees the band wild-eyed, sharp, and fearless. Somewhere between Exile On Main Street and Bee Thousand, bogged down by an obsession with catchy hooks and pop magic similar to The Lovin’ Spoonful or The Zombies, Spatially Severed is the album Everything, Now! has worked a lifetime to invent for you. So be wise, and accept the gift.

Pravada Manus Plere Genre: Alt Rock Label: MFT Records CD: MFT 107 Price Code: N (SRP $12.99) Jewel Case; Box Lot 25 NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA

Overview Indianapolis-based Pravada has been creating a unique stream of atmospheric pop for four years now, and after many delays we are lucky enough to see their near-perfect debut album. Manus Plere was recorded by the late, great LonPaul Ellrich (Marmoset, Mysteries of Life, Sardina) at Queensize studios in Indianapolis. Four years is a long time to wait for a debut release, but the members of Pravada have been touring their asses off with Margot and the Nuclear So and So’s. Nevertheless, these four years have seen the group gain notoriety, and with Manus Plere, Pravada’s stellar musicianship and expertly crafted songs have gelled into an album that consistently reminds us that they are the Midwestern masters of post-modern indie-pop epics.

Overview Man At Arms makes music that has been called “masculine,” “articulate,” and “like Primus” (which they sympathize with, but are reluctant to understand). The band’s first full-length manages to capture the essence of their raucous live sound with more polish than any previous efforts. Where spindly riffs and propellant drumming are reminiscent of the band’s patented sound, Man At Arms stretches out to include near-danceable break beats and a few monotonous phrases. While far from being a concept album, the songs’ lyrical themes span the spectrum from the universe’s beginnings (“Swamp Things”) to its impending endlessness (“Telescope”). However, it is still fucking punk rock.

Track Listing Title Track (A Waste of Time and Space) • The Trial • Rent To Own • Designer Impostors • Everything Is Getting Better/Worse • Urine: The Picture • The Meeting • What’s On? • Swamp Things • What Happens? • The Best Song Ever • Telescope • Stranded in the Future

Press Quotes “Push-Pull delivers a one-two punch with … their crazed brand of experimental postpunk, indie art rock, and progressive pop.” — Smother

Overview With the PPPPPEP, Push-Pull and Prizzy Prizzy Please join forces, offering a split 7”+MP3s of different yet equally unique perspectives on punk rock. Rarely understood but usually celebrated, these two bands carry with them an authentic, unashamed, informed yet undeniably Midwestern musical perspective. While the music certainly stems from the kind of punk that leaves PBR puddles in the basement, the boys of PPP seem to have an equally strong musical allegiance to the quality pop songs of the ’80s. What results is basement arena rock, completely void of guitars, that carries a certain earnest expression and nostalgia matched only by the songs of cheeseball guitar-rock-gods like Van Halen or Rush. Meanwhile, the PP songs come across as a more aggressive extension of their 3 EP—which, according to Skyscraper, presented “bizarrely good songs” from “a quirky band comfortable enough to be as strange and nerdy as they want to be.”

Nov. 1 – Nov. 30, 2008 • SA# 88704 Recently signing with Sufjan Steven’s Asthmatic Kitty Records, Grampall Jookabox’s strange blend of “Jungle Folk” has received an increasing amount of hype. With debut album Scientific Cricket, Grampall Jookabox focused on the strange, dark, and morbid characteristics of the turn-of-the-century sounds of Americana. Complex choral crescendos, jungle drums, box-car lo-fi, and bubble-gum clean sound all made their way into this music. There are hints of early blues, notes of Civil War ballads, and ghetto beats, all filtered through spastically epic and innovative intuition, creating a final product not unlike the early work of Daniel Johnston, though far more refined. With Scientific Cricket, Grampall Jookabox made their triumphant, brightly infantile, and electrically sanctified debut. New album Ropechain (co-released with Joyful Noise) will be heavily promoted in the month of November. “A recent arrival on the acid-folk scene … processed vocals, whimsical freakouts, precious titles … [and] bongwater antics.” — Skyscraper

Formed in 2003, The Chinese Stars’ pedigree reaches back to legendary acts Arab On Radar and Six Finger Satellite, but with TV Grows Arms, the group fills out in all the right places to set in motion a tsunami of new waves fueled by noodle-stringed guitar riffs, seat-of-your-pants lyrics, and hallucinatory synths. Available in an extremely limited “virgin white vinyl edition,” this fast-forward audio movement takes music back to the base pleasures.

Press Quotes “Like Pelican, these guys have a sort of uplifting sound. However it’s a bit more upbeat with a definite indie sound … I have Fang Island all set up in my mind. I know what every spot looks like just by each song. That’s how dynamic the playing is. These guys know their instruments and they just go at it, creating worlds with a flick of a pick.” — LocalBandsRI.com

Selling Points • Members now include a member of Daughters. • Two-week tour with Naysayer in October 2008. • Copies sent to reviewers of magazines, webzines, and blogs as well as radio.

Overview An onslaught of sick, upbeat, relentless finger-tapping and guitar solo small craft advisories. Think the best after-school special soundtrack multiplied with rock, throw in some scruncee action, swirl it up with some ice cream, and drink’er down. Fang Island is probably the happiest band to live in Providence in some time. Now excommunicated to Philadelphia, they still remain in our hearts. The boys bring a sweet brand of psychedelic, upbeat instrumental rock à la Chicago 1990s indie rock meets after-school special soundtrack with visuals à la American Werewolf In London.
