Press Quotes “The Unicorns continually and effortlessly sap the drama from rock’s favorite, most maudlin topics, and transform them into simple, charming, light-hearted fun. It’s a big part of what separates them from all those careerist indie rockers getting by on everyday hooks and affected disinterest; even at their goofiest, The Unicorns’ level of comfort with their material—and the obvious confidence that engenders—makes it all seem totally natural and new.” — Pitchfork

OVERVIEW From the time that Alan Lomax left his position as head of the Archive of American Folk Song at the Library of Congress in 1942 through the end of his long career, he amassed one of the most important collections of ethnographic material in the world. It includes more than 5,000 hours of sound recordings, 400,000 feet of motion picture film, hundreds of photographic prints and negatives, over 120 linear feet of correspondence, field notes, research files, and much more. While recording for the Library of Congress in the 1930s, Lomax made trips to Haiti and the Bahamas. The recordings made in Haiti in 1936–37 provide a window on Haitian expressive culture recorded soon after the departure of the American Marines, while Haiti was in the throes of a nationalist and africentric movement. This groundbreaking production of the story, the sounds, and the sights of the legendary musicologist’s trip to Haiti features 10 CDs, two books containing extensive notes and Lomax’s journal, a replication of the map he used (with added notations), color video footage, and hours of amazing, never-before-heard music that no longer exists on earth!

THE HARMONIC SERIES
A COMPILATION OF MUSICAL WORKS IN JUST INTONATION PRESS QUOTES “Pauline Oliveros has been a figure of the classical and electronic avantgarde for decades … her careers as writer, composer, and performer have been dedicated to the exploration of music as a psychosomatic means of expanding consciousness … Her music is a fine example of eschewing artifice as a means of arriving at richer art: the persistent, undulating mass of sound that she elicits from her accordion brings to mind the image of a raw sine wave—the simplest visual avatar of sound.” — Tiny Mixtapes “A unity of purpose and multi-hued sound that renders an engrossing listening experience.” — Textura (review for Duane Pitre) “The music scrapes and rattles along beautifully, the musicians interacting with sympathy and precision, creating images of lonely marshlands, desolate yet captivating. Abstract voices add another layer to the compositions, wringing yet more emotion from the pieces.” — Terrascape (review for Teresa Wong) “Listening to it, you feel like you are inside some cyclopean subterranean grotto … its bejeweled walls glistening with an alien luster [and] sounding like something that shimmers … iridescent shapes bend conventional pulse-based time and impose their own paradoxical temporality, where constant movement teems within a vast stasis.” — The Wire (review for Ellen Fullman)
Selling Points • A fascinatingly educational compilation including some extremely significant modern composers working within the parameters of an underappreciated tuning system. • Curated by Duane Pitre. • Major promo push by Important Records. • Ads with The Wire.
Overview The Harmonic Series is a compilation of musical works in Just Intonation created by three generations of contemporary composers who utilize this tuning system. The compilation, curated over the span of two years by Duane Pitre, has the goal of educating listeners about the origins and use of Just Intonation as well as portraying the unique beauty of this tonal “color palette,” which is heard by relatively few in the Western world and explored by even fewer. Although all the artists on the compilation work within the avant-garde or experimental genres, each lends something unique to the collection, and each employs a different approach toward how to utilize Just Intonation. Within The Harmonic Series you’ll find an array of instrumentation such as piano, cello, accordion, electronics, guitar, ukelin, saxophone, violin, koto, and more.

Overview Critically acclaimed performance artist Robin Crutchfield moved to New York in the ’70s, only to crossover from art into music with his no-wave band D.N.A., recording tracks for Brian Eno’s historic No New York album. This was followed by Dark Day, a series of collaborations with Nina Canal, Nancy Arlen, Tuxedomoon, Jim Jarmusch, and others. Trading plastic transistors and wires for wood and strings in 2000, he went green, taking up ancient instruments, harps, drums, lyres, and psalteries. He currently pursues and explores acoustic trancelike daydream-scapes of the mysterious and elusive inhabitants of an otherworld most have only experienced through folktale and fable.

Press Quotes “Nadja somehow churns out ‘doom metal’ for the post-rock and noise sets … Nadja can be as heavy as the best industrial or doom band you’ve ever heard. Then again, sometimes they sound like they’ve taped a contact mic to some great abyss and let the tape roll with the soft murmurs of souls. That liminal space is perfect and magnetic.” — Pitchfork

Nadja Thaumogenesis
Overview “One single 62-minute long track—bass, guitar, and drum machine all woven into a slowly undulating soundscape of blissy drone and monstrous pummel … It’s like some Frankensteinian collage of Godflesh, Jesu, Sunn O))), and old Swans. It’s heavy and bleak and doomy, but like Jesu, the sound is imbued with a strange warmth, and emotional mystery, that makes this much more than an exercise in guitar drone. And the sound is not static; it wavers and shifts, the melody subtly changing shape, all without the rhythm ever wavering … Like Merzbow filtered through M83 and played by Philip Jeck, a glorious blast of spectral majesty, radiant and absolutely breathtaking.” — Aquarius Records

At Glasgow’s Instal Fest 2008, at David Keenan’s suggestion, the idea for a trio of Don Dietrich, Ben Hall, and himself was hatched. As the idea for the tour came together, Keenan unfortunately had to step out for personal reasons. C. Spencer Yeh graciously agreed to take his place, and what was originally to be an acoustic Babi Music cover band became the electro-acoustic behemoth The New Monuments. Sharing a common head for so-called “abstract sound” constructions, the members come from related though diverse musical backgrounds. With saxophone, violin, and trapset, they attempt to soundtrack the maiden voyage of a luxury cruise ship constructed solely out of granite cement and ball bearings.

“Perhaps ‘circus folk’ would be a more appropriate description. The songs certainly tumble and swoop, while Young’s voice acts as ringleader for the multitalented cast of performers he has gathered around him … Together they conjure up a joyful sense of youthful innocence and wide-eyed magic, one that suggests endless possibilities, unconstrained by such earthly concerns as dull conformity or cynical calculation.” — KQED

Overview Christopher Hobbs is an English experimental composer, a pioneer of British systems music, founder of the Experimental Music Catalogue, and an early member of both the Scratch Orchestra and AMM. Overview Performed by the composer, this delicate, quietly emotive work bridges the gap between traditional Chinese qin music and contemporary American musical sensibilities without compromising either culture. Upon receiving his doctorate from Juilliard, Christopher Roberts set off to the jungles of Papua New Guinea to study the “natural prosody of music.” Later, as a Fulbright Scholar in Taiwan, he studied and mastered the qin, an ancient Chinese zither. After years of living in Asia, Roberts returned to the States a most unusual “world” musician who now lives and works in Washington state.

House of Broken Promises Using the Useless Genre: Rock/Metal Label: Small Stone Recordings CD: SSO 99 Price Code: O (SRP $13.99) Jewel Case; Box Lot 30 U.S. ORDERS ONLY
Overview If we were to compile a list of all that’s useless in modern rock music, we’d be here for days. In fact, it’d probably be easier, and quicker, to rattle off the few undeniably great things roaring up from the underground. Take Indio’s House of Broken Promises. With their Small Stone debut, this trio is leading the charge against mediocrity and watereddown tepidness. Formed from the ashes of the late, great, and woefully underappreciated Unida (which also featured John Garcia of Kyuss fame), HOBP is a no-holds-barred double shot of classic hard rock. You’re going to get your rock’s worth. That’s a promise this house won’t break.

Overview Luder’s formation harkens back to 2006, when Small Stone undertook the task of issuing Slot’s lost recordings after the untimely passing of its founding member and guitarist, Billy Rivkin. After a successful show at SXSW 2007, the band decided it might be worthwhile to continue playing and writing music under a different moniker. Staying true to their musical passions and running up a hefty electrical bill in the process, Luder’s debut was etched out in the dwelling once known to insiders as The Slot House. Recorded at Rustbelt Studios with Eric Hoegemeyer over the course of six months, Sonoluminescence is organic and dynamic, an orgasmic whirlwind of rock recording sure to turn a few heads, cause a spit-take or two, and clean out a few eardrums in the process.

Overview Newly relocated to the Pacific Northwest and fresh off their recent US tour with Clem Snide, The Heligoats follow up the critically acclaimed End of All-Purpose EP with Goodness Gracious, another weird stop for musical adventurer Chris Otepka. Teaming up with Chicago psych-folk band Ulysses S. Grant just long enough to have a few parties and interpret a record, they formed in Summer 2009. The new collaboration has been wild and exciting, fusing meticulously worded songs and spaced-out jams to make the most interesting Heligoats listen yet. Live, the songs are dynamic and energetic, building sonic force around Otepka’s acoustic-based tunes, adding colorful settings to the stories within, and fleshing out the universe of this recording. And “universe” is apt: with each track its own little world, all 10 songs come together to take the listener on a wild safari and have them home by dinner.

World’s Greatest Ghosts No Magic Genre: Alt Rock Label: Lucky Madison CD: LMD 41 Price Code: O (SRP $13.99) Jewel Case; Box Lot 30 U.S. ORDERS ONLY
World’s Greatest Ghosts is a band born in the sweaty, crowded basements of Portland, but it just as well could have sprung from the skull dungeon lair in A Link to the Past. Equally joyful and anthemic, WGG lives in a world where keyboards and synthesizers collide with spiraling guitar solos, vocals are shouted and quietly whispered, and the pace hardly slows to anything less than a quick jog. No Magic contains songs about evil beasts, secret elixirs, and lost queens, but everything is dorky in the best way possible. Using the mythic to describe the everyday, where things are rough but still always sound triumphant and euphoric, No Magic sounds like the best cuts left off Wolf Parade’s Apologies to the Queen Mary—only skuzzier, born of a place where cheap beer, house shows, and weekend camping trips combine for synth-rock bliss.

Press Quotes “Brazos is one of Austin’s best new bands. We’ve long been fans of Martin Crane, but the new stuff he’s doing with this band is really special.” — Gorilla vs. Bear
Selling Points • Vinyl version includes a CD copy of the album. • RIYL: Grizzly Bear • College radio servicing via AAM. • Promotion via Tell All Your Friends.
Overview Brazos’ Martin Crane wrote the songs on Phosphorescent Blues during a two-week span of peaceful euphoria. Writing on classic themes—transient love, friendship, communities— Crane evokes the loss of youthful illusion and the calm, uneasy accomplishment of that loss. Like the adapted Adrienne Rich poem The Observer, the album tries to break free from the constraints of the city it’s grown into, escaping by turning inward. Brazos has had a solid two years worth of buzz in Austin since their first EP, opening for Grizzly Bear, Wye Oak, Bowerbirds, and more. Now, Brazos make good on their proven promise with a confident and truly unique first album.

Artists for the tour included the Sun Ra Arkestra, Burton Greene, Patty Waters, Giuseppi Logan, and Ran Blake. Accompanied by an all-star backing group from among the participants, Waters’ performances resulted in the album College Tour, her second for ESP. Overview Since 2006, Sleep Whale has become a mainstay of the fruitful north Texas music scene. With its first full-length release, Houseboat, the band solidifies its position as creative leaders and innovators among its peers. Much like the first EP Little Brite, this album pairs Joel North’s deft guitar work and fluid cello playing with Bruce Blay’s impeccable ability to weave percussion, field recordings, guitar, bass, and violin into hypnotic and whimsical dreamscapes. However, unlike Little Brite, Houseboat’s songs show how the band has grown, offering more sonically complex and ambitious compositions.

Full national press campaign by Tell All Your Friends. • Digital press/promotion by IODA and Western Vinyl.
Overview Unraveling some kind of galactic wilderness, J. Tillman’s sixth album lyrically borders on the mystic, proffering a transcendent union and a sense of effortlessness. Strange and honest, this song cycle inhabits its own idea-scape, seemingly obsessed with wrestling death. Hammered dulcimer, banjo, recorder, cymbals of varying size, and wheezing air organs all feature heavily. The string arrangements, performed by Jenna Conrad and transposed from Tillman’s sung direction, were intended to rest on chords almost counterintuitively, bringing to bloom complex, decontextualized tones. Far and away Tillman’s most joyful work, the album is disinterested in communicating much beyond a meditation for the few who allow themselves to listen with an open heart.

OLA PODRIDA Press Quotes
BELLY OF THE LION
“A cohesive, confident album full of folky, quiet guitars and thoughtful lyrics that coalesce into complete songs.” — Pitchfork [8.0] “This is what I’d hoped Grizzly Bear’s Yellow House would sound like … Ola Podrida isn’t just a strikingly accomplished debut—it’s near-essential listening for anyone who’s been taken with the recent turn in some parts of the indie cosmology towards folkier and more countrified sounds.” — Stylus “Instruments layer together subtly and deftly, creating an atmosphere that brings to mind the wide Western plains or old, not-quite-forgotten lovers.” — SPIN
Selling Points • Will tour throughout 2009/2010, likely performing with Wooden Birds and Balmorhea. • Has shared stages with Fleet Foxes, Explosions in the Sky, She & Him, Beach House, and more. • Album has already received praise from Pitchfork, Gorilla vs. Bear, Stereogum, Brooklyn Vegan, Spin, Pop Matters, NPR, and many more. • David Wingo is well known for his gorgeous soundtracks for films by David Gordon Green (George Washington, All the Real Girls, Snow Angels) and Todd Rohal (Guatemalan Handshake). • Pitchfork banner; Insound banner, mp3 player, and front-page feature. • Ads with The Wire, Signal To Noise, Stereogum, PopMatters, and more.

Overview
Featured Artists
Belly of the Lion is David Wingo’s much-anticipated sophomore effort under the name Ola Podrida. Chock-full of unsentimental love songs, the album pulses with the burgeoning sexuality borne of feral adolescent summers spent in the sprawling suburbs of the South. It’s hard not to be wooed, as the songs gingerly lay to rest the calamities that inevitably befall an adventurous heart.
Track Listing
The album sounds so organic and well balanced, it’s hard to believe Wingo wrote and recorded most of it alone in his apartment. Rather than creating overwrought studio jams, Wingo’s years of recording soundtracks seem to have taught him how to use the perfect amount of restraint while still delivering rich guitar textures that complement his unforgettable vocal melodies and magnify the impact of his abstract narratives. If Pink Floyd had been influenced by Bedhead and Flying Saucer Attack, they might well have crafted gorgeous shimmering gems like “We All Radiant” and “Monday Morning.” As tracks like “Donkey” swell almost to the point of bursting, it’s easy to be reminded of Jeff Mangum’s heartbreaking croon. And, the gently driving rhythm and fragile vocals on “Lakes of Wine” project a hypnotizing mood that seems to summon the spirit of Nick Drake, while the pastoral shoegaze rock of “Roomful of Sparrows” feels like the best song Kevin Shields never wrote.

Filleted over two sides of wax, here we have a rare meeting of three of the brightest lights in the Twin Cities’ musical orbit. Overview The fourth album from the much-lauded band that Songlines called the “Polish Pogues” is deeply rooted in Polish traditional village music, but mixes these tunes with fresh, cuttingedge compositions. The band manages to build on influences as varied as African rhythms, funk patterns, and Jewish music without ever losing authenticity. His new group consists of an ever-evolving line-up with contributors from such bands as Demon’s Claws, Chocolat, Hot Springs, Black Feelings, and Sunday Sinners, to name a few.
