yrios Classics was founded in Cologne by Stephan Cahen, a former recording producer and engineer for Deutsche Grammophon, EMI Classics, Archiv Produktion, and Sony. On Myrios, former major label artists such as Tabea Zimmermann and Alte Musik Koeln find their place alongside promising lesser-known players, and standard repertoire stands alongside first recordings. Myrios is dedicated to the highest musical and technical recording standards—most of the label’s recordings are available as hybrid multichannel/stereo SACDs, and contain valuable booklet information.

Kansas City Symphony Michael Stern: conductor BRITTEN: The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra • Sinfonia da Requiem • Four Sea Interludes & Passacaglia from Peter Grimes “The performances are as smart, atmospheric, and vibrant as the music itself … and they’re stunningly recorded.” — ClassicsToday (REF 115) The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra is a virtuoso orchestral spectacular that RR has wanted to record for many years. Sinfonia da Requiem is widely considered to be Britten’s finest orchestral inspiration, full of kaleidoscopic color and wide dynamic range. The music of Peter Grimes, Britten’s operatic masterpiece, is most often heard in the well-known suite of orchestral Sea Interludes and Passacaglia. This is music of haunting atmosphere, and the final Storm brings the program to an exciting conclusion. All of this gripping music has been captured in brilliant HDCD sound by multi-Grammy Award nominee, engineer Keith O. Johnson.

The work’s preliminary history extends far back into Neuwirth’s Graz period. In 1974–75, an American female vocalist specializing in early music requested that Neuwirth compose a piece for tape and voice. The result was to become a forerunner to “Vanish”—even then, a three-part formal expansion had found a place in his thoughts. Due to the circumstances at the time, this was long to remain a latent wish. Then, in 2006, a commission to compose an ensemble work—resulting from an award by Erste Bank—gave the decisive impetus for Neuwirth to complete the two missing parts: one and three. In addition, on this disc listeners will find his String Quartet 1976 and the newly composed Seven Pieces for String Quartet.

Ursuleasa was rewarded for her discipline in 1995, when she won the prestigious Clara Haskil Competition. Carefully selected concerts and recitals followed, while she continued training. After studying with Prof. Heinz Medjimorec in Vienna, she received her concert diploma cum laude in 1999. Concert promoters across the world immediately showed interest, and piano recitals followed at major music venues including the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Cologne Philharmonie, Vienna Konzerthaus, Zurich Tonhalle, and Carnegie Hall in New York.

A truly haunting recording.” — John Schneider, host, KPFK Global Village Specially priced CD single stickered with Global Village quote. Last Cicada Singing is a unique and beautiful suite of four pieces for solo qin (an ancient Chinese zither). Performed by the composer, this delicate and quietly emotive work bridges the gap between traditional Chinese qin music and the spectrum of contemporary American musical sensibilities without compromising or exploiting either culture. Upon receiving his doctorate from Juilliard, Roberts set off to the jungles of Papua New Guinea to study the “natural prosody of music.” Later, as a Fulbright Scholar in Taiwan, he studied and mastered the qin. With this new recording, La Reverdie explores the well-known collection of medieval songbooks known as Carmina Burana. Already the object of many recordings, these refined songs are presented here in an absolutely new approach. The recording focuses on the amorous and moralizing poems, partly because of the topicality of their messages. For the world premiere recordings, a contemporary melody is assigned to four poems not set to music in the manuscript. This recording thereby gives life to particularly vivid texts that are otherwise mute in the manuscript. Liner notes and sung texts in English, French, German, and Italian.

At that point, drawing on sketches for the opera, Battistelli produced a symphonic work inspired by the “anarch,” a key figure in Jünger’s literary work.

Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Frank Shipway: conductor SHOSTAKOVICH: Symphony No. 10 • The Gadfly Suite Shostakovich resisted most attempts to get him to discuss the program of the Tenth Symphony, preferring to let people listen and guess for themselves. According to one source, however, it is about the Stalin years. Of the demonic second movement in particular, the composer is supposed to have created a specific musical portrait of the recently deceased despot, and such is the savagery and violence of this music that it is hard to disagree with such an interpretation. Sharp orchestral stabs and obsessively repeating thematic figures are swept along in a wild whirlwind of sound suggestive of pure evil and malicious violence.
Dmitri SHOSTAKOVICH Symphony No. 10
Shostakovich wrote a great deal of music for the cinema, ranging from complete scores to silent propaganda films such as New Babylon (1929) to the powerful soundtrack to the 1964 proclamation Shakespeare Pasternak Hamlet. In 1955, two years after the composition of the Tenth Symphony, he produced an extensive score for the film The Gadfly, based on E.L. Voynitch’s popular novel about Italy under Austrian domination.

Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Jacques Delacôte: conductor BIZET: Symphony in C • L’Arlésienne Suites 1 & 2 “This is, generally, one of the playful performances [and] the two suites are superbly done.” — Fanfare Bizet composed two orchestral symphonies, both in the key of C Major, the second of which often appears on concert programs and recordings under the name of Roma. The composer himself always referred to this work as his first symphony, and indeed the real first symphony remained unpublished during his lifetime. The manuscript of the earlier work was discovered as late as 1933, received its first performance two years later, and has since been hailed as a teenage masterpiece.

Daudet’s play L’Arlésienne was, in his words, “a dazzling failure with the most charming music in the world.” Bizet composed 27 separate numbers for the play and compiled the First Suite, rescoring the original theater band versions for full orchestra. The Second Suite was put together after Bizet’s death by the composer Ernest Guiraud, a friend of Bizet’s who had occasionally played offstage harmonium in the original productions of L’Arlésienne.

Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Yehudi Menuhin: conductor TCHAIKOVSKY: Symphony No. 6 “Pathétique” • Marche Slave Tchaikovsky had a seemingly endless capacity for misery, but if the troughs of his despair were deep, his bouts of happiness could reach ecstatic heights. It was this same volatile temperament which contributed so much to his musical output, and if he was guilty of wearing his heart on his sleeve, it was a fault that was more than compensated for in the wonderfully heart-wrenching music he produced. These despairs and passionate outpourings receive perhaps their greatest expression in the Sixth Symphony, which can in many ways be seen as the culmination of his life’s work. Tchaikovsky’s Marche Slave was written in 1876 in a fit of patriotic fervor, occasioned by news of atrocities committed by the Turks against Serbia. As young Russian soldiers began to enlist, the composer expressed his pride in his country, and he wrote the highly popular Marche in about five days. The piece is colorfully orchestrated and makes use of three different Serbian folk tunes in addition to the Tsarist national anthem.

Hugh Wood is one of Britain’s most distinguished composers, whose music marries expressionist power and lyrical elegance. These six works expertly balance formal clarity, rigorous craftsmanship, and a high charge of energy.

Although Liszt’s 13 symphonic poems exist in two-piano transcriptions prepared by the composer himself, it was his Czech student August Stradal who was to transcribe them for solo piano—versions that demand almost superhuman virtuosity. As Malcolm MacDonald writes in his booklet essay, Stradal’s versions “transform these revolutionary orchestral compositions into viable and effective piano works, faithfully preserving their masterly musical substance.”

She left a body of about 70 compositions, including original pieces; variations (principally of Scottish airs); arrangements for harp, fortepiano, harp & fortepiano duo; and some rare arrangements for voice and harp or voice and guitar. The sonata for fortepiano was presumably composed when she was 15, and the six sonatas for harp, Op. 2 (Books 1 and 2) when she was between 16 and 19. The first volume of sonatas is the only one still in print and performed today, although for many years it was erroneously attributed to Jan Ladislav. Already in these first sonatas one can find the typical characteristics of her music: the brilliance and freshness of her writing, the originality of many passages, and a great sense of proportion that ensures that no theme—even the least original—wearies the listener. There is no evidence of presumption, vanity, or desire for grandeur; instead, there emerges a desire to sing and make music simply and sincerely.

Once again the forces of the Ensemble Schönbrunn team up for an adventurous program with lesser-known composers! The Septet is attributed to Johannes Nisle, but this remains uncertain. BACH: Toccata and Fugue in D minor, BWV 565 • Toccata in G minor, BWV 915 • Toccata in C minor, BWV 911 • Prelude & Fugue in D, BWV 532 • Toccata in D minor, BWV 913 • Toccata in D, BWV 912 • Toccata & Fugue in D minor, BWV 538 • Toccata in F-sharp minor, BWV 910 • Toccata in G, BWV 916 • Toccata & Fugue in F, BWV 540 • Toccata, Adagio & Fugue in C, BWV 564 • Toccata in E minor, BWV 914 • Toccata in A, BWV Anh. III 178 • Prelude & Fugue in E, BWV 566 Among his early keyboard works, the Prelude, the Toccata, and the Fantasy represent a type of composition that allowed Johann Sebastian Bach to approach the limits of keyboard playing outside a strict formal framework. This recording by Léon Berben impressively displays the virtuosity that liberation from form allows. The early keyboard toccatas are some of the most mysterious and most fascinating of Bach’s works—they don’t exhibit any of the characteristics of Bach’s later, more mature compositions.

Giovanni BONONCINI San Nicola di Bari
Les Muffatti/Peter Van Heyghen: conductor BONONCINI: San Nicola di Bari—Oratorio for Four Voices with Concertino & Grosso (1693) Within the vast repertoire of the Baroque oratorio, San Nicola di Bari is unique in two ways. It is the only composition to treat a scene from Saint Nicholas’ life, and the only one that emerged from the long and successful collaboration between the librettist Silvio Stampiglia and the composer Giovanni Bononcini. Ramée hopes that this recording of Bononcini’s most successful oratorio will awaken some curiosity about the many other masterpieces of a composer who has, unfortunately and undeservedly, dwelled too long in the shadows.

Juan de LEDESMA Violin Sonatas
Blai Justo: violin/Elisa Joglar: cello/Bernard Zonderman: guitar LEDESMA: Sonatas for violin & basso continuo At the time of Farinelli, Scarlatti, and Boccherini, Madrid was one of Europe’s leading cultural centers. Successive marriages between Spanish kings and Italian princesses attracted greatly talented Italian musicians to the court. Ledesma was one of the few Spanish violinists among their number, his collaboration with Farinelli indicating the extent of his connection with the Italian school. This is also made clear in his sonatas, closely related with those of Corelli and his students. Among other influences is what might be termed “Espagnolism”: the insertion of melodic turns of phrase and rhythms that recall Spanish folk music, also to be found in the music of Scarlatti and Boccherini.

Then I realized that he successfully redesigns his singing for this role: his objective is not to put forward beauty of sound but to feel the emotions in the music and words. No other recorded tenor sings the part with so much temperament or such variety of inflection. But the inflections aren’t a series of chiaroscuro effects, as in Butterfly; instead, they are dictated by his viscera. His fire quickly swept me away.” — Stefan Zucker

Mascagni conducted this studio recording of the opera from 1940, and the world always has assumed that recording was definitive. When Bernstein conducted the opera, he copied its tempos and rubatos. But in this littleknown version from 1938, also conducted by Mascagni, the tempos and rubatos are different. Lina Bruna Rasa stars in both versions, but is more impassioned in this one.
