NAIL WELCOMES cockroach media

pg 4–7

COCK•ROACH noun \käk-r¯och\ : Independent record labels that succeed on both a grassroots and a technical level. Able to scurry fast and loose in order to adapt to an ever-changing world. Flying under the radar of the established, and acceptable, traditional record business. No fear of international boundaries. No rules. The last survivors of the pending Record Industry Nuclear Holocaust. The Cockroach Media Label Group is a family of 25 like-minded, post-DYI labels (and growing). Each label in the group brings something new and unique, covering the spectrums of punk, garage, skate, psychobilly, hardcore, metal, southern sleeze, and beyond. And now, Cockroach titles are available exclusively through NAIL Distribution. We promise three things:

LA PLEBE

BRAZO EN BRAZO Selling Points

• RIYL: Rancid, Operation Ivy, Voodoo Glow Skulls, Los Tigres del Norte, The Clash, Dropkick Murphys. • Vinyl version includes download card. • Full lyrics with translations in both formats. • Extremely influential SF punk band. • Highly anticipated follow up to critically acclaimed Hasta La Muerte! • Produced by Bill Gould (Faith No More). • Engineered by Matt Kelley (Jello Biafra, Melvins). • Full press mailing. • West Coast tour planned for November 2010.

Overview

With the long awaited, much-anticipated follow-up to the critically acclaimed and internationally recognized Hasta la Muerte, La Plebe presents their most developed and definitive recording to date. Produced once again by longtime producer and friend Billy Gould (Faith No More), this album ultimately extends the band’s musical and lyrical trajectory into a place that reflects years of drinking, social commentary, political enlightenment, and basic human development. Intense in both lyric and song, this group complements the traditional punk rock trio of guitar, bass, and drums with the musical punch of a two-person horn section. Tinged with a traditional ranchero sentiment, built on a foundation of old-school punk rock, and splashed with a little bit of old world chutzpah, this album is sure to solidify La Plebe as a premier musical outfit.

Press Quotes

“Think of a Latin version of Gogol Bordello’s Gypsy-fied version of third wave ska-punk and you’re at least three quarters of the way to the sound of La Plebe … Spanish and English vocals are performed in the usual street punk shout-along style, crossing cultural borders into Dropkick Murphys territory … an exhilarating rush for rock en español and punk fans alike.” — All Music Guide

“A TIGHTLY-KNIT ENSEMBLE PLAYING THE SICKEST, SLICKEST SKA-PUNK AROUND … A SONIC GEM.” — SF BAY GUARDIAN, EDITOR’S PICK OF 2010

In 1986 The Dehumanizers’ debut single “Kill Lou Guzzo” (a self-righteous Seattle newscaster) landed them in court, where their right to free speech won out … and solidified their place in Northwest music history. Twenty-five years later, the band is still bringing their view of politics and world events to the masses. These reinterpretations cover the spectrum of punk, metal, techno, psychobilly, and experimental. The Dehumanizers’ influence is represented by bands from as far away as Indonesia and Italy … and, of course, their hometown of Seattle is well represented.

Overview

It started out innocently enough—The Beatles and Bob Dylan with his parents. His first AC/DC album, bought for him by his grandfather. A Stooges album that almost frightened him. But it wasn’t long before the obsession took hold of Jay Berndt’s soul, and music became part of him. Eventually it became clear that he would never be truly satisfied unless that music was 100% pure undiluted him—written by him, performed by him, recorded by him, and produced by him. It was this revelation, along with a few devastating life experiences and some uncanny good luck, that led to the creation of Moto Destructo Studio, the dawn of Jay Berndt’s solo music project, and the birth of Sad Bastard Songs, a labor of love, heartbreak, anger, sadness, and peace.

Hellbound Glory is pure scumbag country, as real as the grit on the abandoned buildings in the towns the members grew up in. The band’s sound builds on the roots of honky tonk, bluegrass, rockabilly, and outlaw country to create something that is as traditional as Grandma’s apple pie and as potent as your cousin’s home-cooked crank. Lead singer/rhythm guitarist Leroy Virgil is the conductor of the hellbound train that is the band’s live show, alongside the Jerry Reed-meets-Jimi Hendrix guitar work of Johnny Fingers (Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash, Saddle Tramps), the maximum C&W drumming of Chico Kortan, the thumpin’ bass of Frank Medina, and the pure country sound of Adam Jaffe’s pedal steel guitar and banjo.

Since their formation in their native Holland, Clan of Xymox’s music has been constantly changing, always challenging, and quite often breathtaking. Formed in the 1980s, CoX has always been a uniquely evolving band. The act earned a huge fan base with their early releases on the legendary 4AD label, and later under the moniker Xymox for a Polydor subsidiary. With Hidden Faces, Clan of Xymox released what many believe to be their finest work of that era. Lush layered guitars, pounding rhythms, shimmering keyboards, and dark, melancholy vocals blend seamlessly. The singles “Out of the Rain” and “This World,” now considered club classics, were in the Top 10 of the German Independent charts and numerous indie charts all over the world. BAD CHOICES MADE EASY Selling Points

• Side project of Jimmy Urine and Steve Righ? of Mindless Self Indulgence. • Street teams will distribute promotional materials. • Servicing to club DJs, radio, and press.

Overview

Born out of the massive electro/punk cult group Mindless Self Indulgence, singer and guitarist Jimmy Urine and Steve Righ? release their second album in a decade under the name The Left Rights. Never known as artists that would resort to maturity, these two again are once again able to shed the confines of MSI’s sound to experiment with different styles on Bad Choices Made Easy. The result is an incredibly brilliant collection of wildly entertaining childish ID gotten loose. While some of the songs, such as lead single “White” and “Why You In My Phyzical” have a touch of the signature Urine sound that will appeal to die-hard fans of the duo’s main project, songs like “Young Black and Constipated,” “Magic Bone,” “Free Porn,” and “Ass In My Face” (parts 1 & 2) bring an unrestrained joy to what would normally be considered subjects out of bounds.

AGENT RIBBONS

CHATEAU CRONE

Selling Points

• Recorded with Manny Nieto (Breeders, HEALTH) and Scott McChane (Tape Op). • This LP comes with a full-color 24-page booklet and temporary tattoo. • Cross promotion with Modcloth clothing, who have designed an Agent Ribbons dress! • US print and online publicity campaign with Robert Vickers/Proxy Media (Sun Kil Moon). • Servicing to 300+ North American radio stations.

Overview

Agent Ribbons is a Sacramento trio whose music has been described as “Victorian punk” or “The White Stripes lost in Alice’s Wonderland.” With an old-timey aesthetic that is nonetheless thoroughly modern, they miraculously reconcile seemingly unrelated genres, sounding something like Girls in the Garage doing the Three Penny Opera. And with almost constant touring since 2007, the band has cemented a deeply devoted fan base across the US and Europe. Agent Ribbons’ forthcoming LP, Chateau Crone, is a tremendous step forward. With delicate violin arrangements, noisy dissonant tangents, Spector-esque vocal harmonies, and clever melodic phrasing, the album cannot commit to a genre but always manages to sound like the same brand of baroque pop. Each copy of Chateau Crone comes with a 24-page full color booklet as well as a temporary tattoo for aspiring Chateau Cronies.

“Sounding not unlike the wide-eyed retro-pop of Glasgow’s Camera Obscura or even the mournful folk of Zach Condon’s Beirut, there’s a definite sense of throwback about this pair of wayward Judy Garlands, and you could easily picture them soundtracking a golden summer’s day in 1940s America. With an innate sense of the theatrical, Agent Ribbons’ vintage serenades, with lyrics about old circuses and nickels and dimes, are a rare case of the old outshining the new.” — Metro.co.uk

• RIYL: Rodan, June of 44, Shannon Wright, Rachel’s. • First new album in five years! • Recorded live at Skull Alley (Louisville) and O-Nest (Tokyo). • Download card included. • National press, radio, and blog campaign. • Social networking marketing.

Overview

This is the band’s first new full-length album since Flies The Fields, and a helluva lot has happened in the last five years—two weddings, fatherhood, serious illness, a presidential election, multiple wars, city moves, two Batman films, and lots of time with friends playing songs.

Genre: Punk Label: Karate Body Records LP: KBR 12 Price Code: U (SRP $19.99) Number of Discs: 1 Letterpress Jacket; Box Lot 50 Street Date: 11/9/10 U.S. ORDERS ONLY

Featured Artists Jason Noble: guitars, vocals Jeff Mueller: guitars, vocals Todd Cook: bass Kyle Crabtree: drums

These things seem to have inspired the band to make their most aggressive and adolescent album to date. Shipping News has jettisoned the long songs (and glacial tempos) of the past to concentrate on energetic blasts of noisy rock with a little gallows humor thrown in. While slipping into a slightly more sympathetic mood once or twice, the new songs are stripped down and pretty much nasty.

Since its inception in 1991, the Trio has released 12 CDs: six studio CDs featuring original works and a variety of classics, four live releases, and a Christmas CD with familiar and not-so familiar Christmas music, which continues to receive rave reviews. Réplica is the haunting new album from Spanish native Raúl Pastor Medall and multi-instrumentalist Peter Broderick. In a nod to the vinyl LP renaissance, the album is composed of two flowing compositions that revolve around layered guitars, reverberating pianos, strings, and haunting atmospheric vocals. Rich in texture and structure, even epic and quite experimental on some passages, the record also presents the most introspective and bare folk songs Raúl has written to date. Not afraid of its sparse or epic moments, John Askew (Tracker) classily mixed the album in his Scenic Burrows studio in Portland. The record has been mastered on magnetic tape by pianist/sound maestro Nils Frahm in Berlin.

Overview

Brothers Brandon & Richard Laws have been making music for over a decade. Like all great family bands, their voices sound like they were borne of the same place. Together, the debut studio album from their group Hosannas, honors those years refining their craft while making it clear that the place their music comes from is extraordinarily unique. Make no mistake—while this record is accessible (even infectious), it is not a record you have heard before. The sound is dark and huge. Place it somewhere between your first memory of being really excited about music, and something like the blurred wave of brain activity that greets you when you’re almost asleep. Band mates Lane Barrington and Cristof Hendrickson help to build the songs into lithe, almost sentient forms, a distillation of hundreds of live performances together, and this living trust is captured beautifully by producer John Askew (The Dodos, Mount Analogue, Karl Blau). The album as a whole is immersive in a way that is increasingly rare in today’s culture of atrophied attention spans. The story told here will bring to mind thoughtfully constructed albums of the past, presenting a cohesive whole that reflects a singular vision.

As Dear and Glorious Physician, the Westfalls have honed a sound caught between two eras: think art-rock ’70s (à la Talking Heads) and mid-’90s college rock (à la Pixies). Brothers Charles and Andrew began collaborating seriously in the summer of 2002 and after several permutations, additions, and subtractions, the band took its ultimate shape in early 2005 with the addition of Westfall sisters Jillian and Robin. Relentlessly covering the southeastern US, Dear and Glorious Physician have quickly become a regional favorite within the independent music circuit. Overview

Birthed in the year 2010, Blackwolfgoat is here in this world, and is very real. Yes, the legends and stories of Blackwolfgoat are all true, and then some. Guitarist Darryl Shepard, one-time member of bands such as Hackman, Roadsaw and Milligram, decided to go it alone for his latest endeavor, choosing to create loops and drones that could then be added to and layered upon to build songs out of the simplest of material. With just one guitar and one amplifier, Shepard has crafted six musical pieces that take the listener to some dark places, and some lighter ones as well. Whether it’s the haunting sound of a beeping heart monitor, some dusty wind-blown slide guitar, or what appears to be a drum machine in a state of distress, all of the songs and sounds on Blackwolfgoat’s debut album Dragonwizardsleeve were recorded entirely live in the studio without the aid of any overdubbing or additional tracking—the very definition of solo performance. And this is just the beginning, for Blackwolfgoat has only taken the first steps on this new, wide-open path.

Genre: Alt Rock Label: Engine Studios CD: EGR 36 Price Code: P (SRP $15.99) Number of Discs: 1 Letterpress Jacket; Box Lot 50 Street Date: 11/9/10 U.S. ORDERS ONLY

Cassorla’s Stay Stay Go combines indie rock energy with the sophisticated arrangements of jazz and R&B. All tracks were recorded live, so the listener gets upfront guitars with the support of an organic rhythm section laced with horn swells and the keening of Ben Cassorla’s voice. The music is composed, but contains spaces for strong, young players to stretch. With a trombone player from Count Basie’s band and a bass player from hip-hop circles, these are not your typical lo-fi indie rock wannabe musicians.

Genre: Experimental Label: Engine Studios CD: EGR 37 Price Code: P (SRP $15.99) Number of Discs: 1 Letterpress Jacket; Box Lot 50 Street Date: 11/9/10 U.S. ORDERS ONLY

Many Arms is a power trio in the truest sense of the term. The band’s music is loud and aggressive, and the members work together as a solid unit, pushing and pulling improvisations and heavy shredding to and from strong unison melodies and vamps. The members of Many Arms are 6- and 12-string electric guitarist Nick Millevoi (Make A Rising, Joe Lally), electric bassist John DeBlase (Zevious), and drummer Ricardo Lagomasino (Joe Lally, Capillary Action). The band’s punk-rock touring ethos has taken their music across the US and Canada numerous times. Missing Time is Many Arms’ second full-length release.

Press Quotes

Overview

Contact High With The Godz is the first album, released in 1966, by this NYC-based band. The Godz were part of the Lower East Side scene that produced post-beat avant-hippie rockers/performance artists The Fugs and the Holy Modal Rounders, as well as beat performers like Allen Ginsberg. Sounding like a prototype for Half Japanese or The Shaggs, The Godz play as if they discovered their instruments ten minutes before the tape started rolling.

Tom Rapp, an 18-year-old draft resistor and college dropout living in Eaugallie, FL, sent a small unsolicited reel of tape to ESP. Bernard Stollman invited him to bring his musicians to New York, where they recorded their acclaimed debut, One Nation Underground, in 1967. Less than a year later, they released the equally strong follow-up, Balaklava. Classics of the genre, which certainly would have seen wider attention had ESP survived past 1968, these recordings are now getting a well-deserved second chance thanks to a thorough remastering under the supervision of Tom Rapp.

“Sunburnt Impedance Machine” moves through driving riff passages with soaring guitars and a voice recalling touches of early Floyd before locking into a repetitive keyboard and drum driven outro. “Serra” is an extended voyage through a shimmering Krautrock landscape, with continuous expectant grooves that call to mind a turbo-charged Neu! combined with heavy waves of churning minimalist synth à la Glass or Reich. Clinic’s Jonathan Hartley guests here, adding distant bursts of haunting clarinet skronk to induce flashes of Nik Turner or Beefheart. “Radar King” launches with mesmeric drums and bass while guitars weave and build to near climax before descending to an eerie space—a noise fest Sonic Youth would revel in! And finally, “Beyond The Sun” closes in a more reflective mood, with incessant rhythms punctuated by arpeggiated synths and distant vocals that evoke a feeling of pastoral psychedelia.

Steve Ashton: drums, percussion Neil Murphy: guitar Peter Smyth: guitar, keyboards, vocals Jason Stoll: bass Jonathan Hartley: clarinet

Take the list of band names mentioned above; add a few others along the lines of Bardo Pond, Oneida, Circle, and Kinski; wind the intensity and volume levels up to blistering; and you’ll be entering Mugstar’s universe.

Overview

Stratospheria Cubensis picks up where 2007’s Power Hor (Holy Mountain) left off. The album takes the band and listener on a darker, more elaborate prog-doom journey, each track telling an epic psychedelic story using myriad genres, styles, and timbres. Seldon Hunt’s impressive artwork richly supports the album’s themes, which the band describes simply as “mushrooms in the sky with diamonds.”

Press Quotes

“Definitely another ‘heavy’ winner from the eccentric Holy Mountain label, fresh from their successes with the likes of Om and Mammatus, two other question-mark-metal bands with heady, hypnotic abilities. Their throat-torn vocals and the weighty riffage argue for Lesbian’s status as metallers, while the many passages of quiet blissfulness reveal a surprisingly sensitive side … Recommended!” — Aquarius Records “This is exactly the kind of wake up call that psychedelic metal needs in this country! As far as debut albums are concerned, Power Hor is among the finest I have heard in a long, long time. These four visionaries have brought to the table a heaping helping of seriously heavy music, and I don’t think anyone who eats from the table of Lesbian will go away hungry. This band is a force to be reckoned with, and reckon you shall!” — Delusions of Adequacy

“It takes stones for an all-male metal band to call themselves Lesbian. But the Seattle quartet who traffic under that provocative name don’t seem to be doing so for cheap outrage, but rather out of respect for an oft-beleaguered segment of society. Lesbian grind out pugnacious metal that frequently grows serpentine tendrils of prog-rock introspection and subdued virtuosity … Lesbian’s mastery of dynamics and dramatic mood swings keep their music interesting; they realize your head is there for more than just banging.” — The Stranger

Ellen Fullman, 2010: “By examining the waveform produced by the Long String Instrument through a spectrum analyzer, I have observed that every overtone of the fundamental being played is represented nearly equally through the entire range of hearing. Just intonation, a tuning system based on pure ratios, lends itself to a consideration of not only precise tuning of fundamental frequencies, but in addition, precise alignment of the resultant matrix of relationships among the upper partial tones. Strings vibrate in mathematical subdivisions of the total string length. As the performer moves through these subdivisions or nodal points, while bowing with rosin-coated fingertips, partials associated with that location emerge. Thus, musical events on my instrument can be aligned in time and space to coincide with specific overtone combinations.”

For the new album, three single-chord compositions were charted out—one freeform and tone driven, one long-form piece with charts dictating the players’ intensity of performance, and one grid-like chart where each players’ note continually shifts, though the combination of voices continue to maintain the chord. Six chords were chosen and arranged in a progression that encompasses two separate performances of each of the three compositions. Though the CD and LP can be listened on their own, they are intended to be played concurrently, forming the full six-chord arc of the total piece.

Head of Wantastiquet is the alter ego of Paul Labrecque, an American songwriter now residing in Belgium. Historically, aesthetically, and sonically, his new album under the HOW moniker bears the mark of “American primitivism.” It’s a mix of psychedelic banjo hymns, apocalyptic space folk, and incredible drugged-out soul-whispers. It layers banjos, guitars, and smoke as though they were shimmering veins of black pearls, pulsing against the scarlet dawn. Head of Wantastiquet manages to take a conceptual precept as dark as life itself, and invest it with an inner glow that churns our own black hearts like butter.

When Conspiracy first got to know Flying Horseman, the label was blown away by the sadness and beauty of Bert Dockx’s songs. They realize all too well this might not be a record you would expect to be released on Conspiracy, but this is a passionate, pure, heartfelt, and disturbingly personal album that is more important than 90% of the music that gets made these days. Lots of bands can “rock” live, but rare is the band that can create a mood, evoke emotions, and make standing in a smoky club feel like standing knee-deep in the mud, watching the black night sky and thinking back over your life. The music of Flying Horseman is like that, delivered with such fervor and brutal musical intensity that the songs take on the gravity and urgency of sonic directives from some higher power.

SECOND SHIMM Y FALL SALE! 25% DISCOUNT OCTOBER 1–29, 2010 USE RESTOCK SA# 885434

With Second Shimmy, the venerable Shimmy-Disc was reborn for the 21st century as Kramer’s fiercely independent NYC record label (1987–1999) came back after a seven-year hiatus, under a new name! “One of the few thriving, truly independent small labels devoted to the preservation of non-mainstream rock, Shimmy-Disc set a standard for underground survival and idiosyncratic musical vision in a pop age of cookie-cutter video stars, copycat heavy metal, and billion-dollar record company mergers. Kramer is a force of nature, and one of the few true icons of the American Underground.” — David Fricke, Rolling Stone Various Artists I Killed the Monster

Genre: Alt Rock Label: Second Shimmy CD: SES 100 Price Code: O (SRP $13.99) Number of Discs: 1 U.S. ORDERS ONLY

Features Sufjan Stevens, Mike Watt, Jad Fair, Kimya Dawson, Dot Allison, Daniel Smith, and more! A brilliant 21-song compilation of tunes written by Daniel Johnston. Each track features standout performances by some of indie music’s brightest stars, and many feature Kramer’s unmistakable prowess as one of his generation’s most celebrated producers/arrangers.

The intensity of harmonic power that emerges when Jessie & Layla’s voices join together has not been experienced with this level of potency since the glory days of the sixties. Lush string arrangements by producer Liam Mulvaney and a re-mastering by Kramer bring out the hidden nuances in this magnificent release, surely destined to be looked upon as one of the finest debuts in modern pop history.

Little Aida Mad Country

Genre: Alt Rock Label: Second Shimmy CD: SES 103 Price Code: O (SRP $13.99) Number of Discs: 1 U.S. ORDERS ONLY

Little Aida celebrates the chaotic nature of collective “reality,” rummaging through the madness of contemporary life in search of the spirit. Creating a soundtrack for the apocalypse, the band frames its unique vision with enigmatic imagery that frees the imagination. The weird, wonderful, and profoundly spiritual lyrics meander between a childlike wonder of the world and the dark solace of earthy wisdom.

AVAILABLE NOW

This collection of 11 songs composed by Matt Menovcik (Saeta) and produced by Kramer are brutally quiet and perfectly presented—a deftly assembled marriage of seventies-era Eno and Beck at his very best. The ultra-eroticism of Menovcik’s vocal performances form the bedrock of this collaboration, focused and drawn to a series of subtle points by Shimmy-Disc founder Kramer’s production genius.

Hailed by a two generations of listeners as one of the most important (and overlooked) songwriters of the last 25 years, Arthur Russell’s music remains as contemporary today as when it was first recorded. Over the last several years, Audika Records has diligently mined Russell’s vast archive of previously unreleased music with a series of critically lauded albums. “Audika’s reissue program is an act of devoted, some might say obsessive, scholarship and curatorship that deserves every bit of acclaim it has received.” — Pitchfork Arthur Russell Love Is Overtaking Me
