A very special live recording from NEA Jazz Master Randy Weston, whose music encompasses the vast rhythmic heritage of Africa with global creations that musically inform and inspire.

• The Storyteller stands out in Weston’s wide discography as the premier recording of new arrangements of Weston classics; as Weston’s first performance with jazz lion Lewis Nash on drums; and, sadly, as the last recording of Weston’s long time collaborator, trombone legend Benny Powell (1930–2010.)

• Release coincides with the 50th anniversary of Weston’s landmark 1960 recording Uhuru Afrika, and with the publication of his autobiography African Rhythms, which documents one of the most extraordinary lives in jazz.

• Uhuru Afrika will be celebrated on November 13 with a concert at NYC’s Tribeca BMCC Performing Arts Center. Heads of state of 17 African nations that also turn 50 this year are expected to attend, so publicity possibilities will expand beyond jazz.

The quintet played dates in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Italy, and this album was recorded in early October at the Bird’s Eye Club in Basel, Switzerland. For this recording, Davis is featured exclusively on tenor.

What happens in Enders Room is difficult to grasp stylistically: in its unique way, it touches on indie rock as well as old school hip-hop, jazz, church music, punk, and Kraftwerk.

• Influenced mainly by Arab-Andalusian, Arab, and Western cultures, Tunisia’s most famous type of classical music is maluf, which was brought from Andalusia in the 15th century and is played by small orchestras.

• Maluf is based on qasida, a type of classical Arabic poetry, and its most important structural element is the suite, known as nawba. • Kacapi suling, played on two box zithers (kacapi) and a flute (suling), is one of the main styles of music found in the Sunda areas of western Java. As you will hear on this recording, it has a bewitching charm!

• The kacapi is a plucked box zither. It has 18 or more metal strings, which are stretched lengthwise over the soundboard. At one end they are attached to tuning pegs. There are two sizes, known as kacapi indung (‘mother zither’) and kacapi rincak (‘child zither’); they are played together.

• The suling (bamboo flute) has a characteristically wide diversity of playing styles. On this recording, it is used to play a contemplative type of music.
