• Features collaboration with Devendra Banhart! • Son of legendary cult filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky, who shares co-writing credits. • Three bonus English language tracks, exclusive to this release (CD and digital only). • Full press campaign via Brookes Company. • College & non-commercial radio campaign via Dave Sanford at Distller Promotions. • Ads with LA Record, Facebook, and Indieclick. • RIYL: Devendra Banhart, Leonard Cohen.

Overview

The son of legendary psychedelic filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky (Holy Mountain, Santa Sangre), Adan Jodorowsky is a polyglot who sings in Spanish, French, and English. As a child, James Brown taught him how to dance and George Harrison, who was friends with his parents, gave him his first guitar lessons. Amador is his US debut, and as the name would imply the songs are romantic, dark, and obsessed with love (“amador” is Spanish for “lover”). Running the gamut from seductive cosmic folk to funky cabaret, Amador includes a collaboration with Devendra Banhart and a handful of songs with lyrics contributed by father Alejandro.

“His playing is Randy Newman-esque, with whimsy and a slight Western twang, only the lyrics are whispered in Spanish at Leonard Cohen depths. Sometimes the songs venture into creepy, sultry, and carnivalesque, with some burlesque instrumentation, like a muffled trumpet. It doesn’t make you happy per se, but it captures your mood so well that you fall in love all over again.” — MTV Iggy

In an old GMC, Burning Streets managed a few full US tours, multiple East Coast and Canadian tours, and their first journey overseas in late 2010. Inspired by the constant inconsistencies that they encountered over the years, the band felt it appropriate to title this new release Sit Still. In support of a more mature and experienced band, the record was produced by Marc Cannatta (ex-Far From Finished) and takes on a strong rock strain while grounding their punk roots. Sit Still weaves song after song of passionate, upbeat, punk-strewn rock songs that straddle unfiltered angst and crafted emotion. 2011 is indeed the year the streets will burn!

Overview

SKiN GRAFT Records is proud to announce its 100th release, the debut album from RUINS Alone. Originally conceived as a power trio, Japan’s RUINS was formed by drummer/vocalist Yoshida Tatsuya in 1985. Countless tours and numerous recordings would follow, and Tzomborgha, released in 2002 by Ipecac Records, would be their last full-length. In 2005, RUINS unveiled one last song, “Gwodhunqa,” for a SKiN GRAFT/Relapse Records co-release. In the summer of that year Yoshida took on the task of performing the music of RUINS solo, with a different guest bass player in each city, embarking on the “Bassist Wanted Tour.” From this point on, Yoshida would continue RUINS as a one-man act, touring as RUINS Alone—and was chosen by Matt Groening to perform at All Tomorrow’s Parties in May 2010.

PRESS QUOTES

“The main riff is as stubbornly assured as anything Bad Brains put to wax, and lest you get bored during its eight seconds, another wild-ass riff is there to take its place, again and again.” — Pitchfork “RUINS explore string-popping ideas only to degenerate into complex whirlpools of distortion, then regroup into a new version of their original idea with surprising grace. Ruins grow on you like a cancerous cell, and are killer.” — CMJ

Vortex is a German sound art project that challenges the boundaries of ritual and dark ambient music. After the critically acclaimed debut album Phanopoeia (Tesco, 2008) and the book/soundtrack Silence (Ikonen, 2009), the full-scale Rockdrill continues mobilizes acoustic instruments, voice, electronics, and samples to create a unique and epic sound monument in 11 parts.

Journey of One is a pinnacle live performance captured during the zenith of Steve Roach’s rich tribal-ambient origins of the mid-1990s. The music rises from the darkness, an ancient voice chants in serpentine ecstasy only to subside and hover next to silence, soon broken by raging hybrid trance grooves, didgeridoo, and mind-altering soundscapes that mesh to form a soundtrack for a future-primal culture. Journey of One is an ascent into the mystical and primordial places Roach first developed on Dreamtime Return, Artifacts, Origins, World’s Edge, and his Suspended Memories collaborations. Roach meticulously, passionately utilizes the electro-acoustic nature at the heart of this sound: earthy ferocity and multi-timbral frequencies drawn out to their fullest. The music shapeshifts between moods, always rushing forward, engaging a range of electronic and acoustic tools: analog and digital synths, clay water pots, butterfly cocoons and seedpod shakers, and ocarinas. The didgeridoos’s hoary sonic quality and a tumbling avalanche of hand-struck percussion further illustrate the tribal canvas.

This is music that gently rotates around its own axis in a time-suspended haze. The track “The Passage” originated as the blissed-out 16-minute closer to 1999’s Blacktape CD As One Aflame Laid Bare By Desire. It would take over a decade for the composition to resurface when Rosenthal began work on the score for Mark A. Michaels & Patricia Johnson’s guided-meditation set, Ananda Nidra. “Rae,” the last ten minutes of the album, adds a new element to the work. Stacking the shimmering harmonics of long-standing Blacktape collaborator and violinist Vicki Richards into a sonorous cathedral dome, “Rae“ spirals higher and higher before fading away into a grateful silence.

Overview

A new era dawns for iconic band Pop Will Eat Itself, with a revival by principal songwriter and co-frontman Graham Crabb. This unique band, whose influence touched the careers of acts such as The Prodigy and Nine Inch Nails, still has a large, strong following worldwide. After the 1986 debut, Pop Will Eat Itself made its mark on the independent music world by morphing from indie-pop wonders into hip-hop/rock crossover pioneers. Years ahead of their time, PWEI produced a furious mix of beatboxes, metal riffs, MC’ing, and pop songs. Industrial grooves, machine-precise rhythms, and infectious grooves still prevail on New Noise Designed By A Sadist, as Crabb faced the challenge of creating a classic PWEI album a full 25 years after the first EP release. The result is an album that sounds more exciting and relevant than most of what is being produced in 2011!

Overview

Fans of Daniel Graves’ previous albums won’t be disappointed as All Beauty Destroyed continues in the dance floor tradition of A Violent Emotion and Close To Human, though with this new album things take a decidedly darker and more sinister turn. The first single, “The Devil’s in the Details,” showcased the evolved sound that Graves expounds on with the new release. The second single, “Inhuman,” is bound to keep DJs satisfied with its pulsing rhythm and shout-along vocals. All Beauty Destroyed promises to be the darkest, most melodic, and dynamic piece of work Graves has ever created.

Since 2005, Seattle-based Nazca Lines have been piecing together songs that combine emotionally charged lyrics and loud post-rock/punk instrumentation. Founding members and guitarists Cory Alfano and Brett Wedeking have stuck it out through a number of lineup changes, and a solid roster is now in place with the addition of Andy King and Ryan Minchon on drums and bass, respectively. The foursome writes music that draws inspiration from a variety of shared influences; when pressed, most in the band can agree on Refused, At The Drive-In, and Fugazi. Nazca Lines has a punk lineage that shows initially in songwriting and energy; however, given a closer inspection the listener can hear a more contemplative and ponderous side of the band.

Fat Wreck Chords released three of their albums, and the band supported NOFX on a full US tour. Then, at the peak of their career in 2000, they abruptly broke up. Now, Hi-Standard’s massive fan base has followed Ken to his eponymous solo project. Founded in 1947, Tikva’s catalog was wide-ranging—everything from Israeli folk songs to Jewish-American swing, from klezmer pop to cantorial singing, from Catskills comedy to key political speeches of Jewish leaders—and it became something of a “Jewish Motown,” home to the Jewish music world’s biggest names. Despite the fact that Tikva’s releases were a direct reflection of the major social themes and cultural shifts of Jewish America in the ’50s and ’60s, its contributions to American popular music, and Jewish musical and cultural history, have been largely forgotten.

Overview

SUNBEARS! is an indie/psychedelic/electronic pop duo hailing from Jacksonville, FL. Not unlike Wayne Coyne’s Flaming Lips, their live show is not to be missed. Since forming in 2008, the band has released a handful of EPs and a vinyl single. In May 2010, SUNBEARS! was selected as one of the Best Unsigned Bands by Alternative Press. As a result, the band was tapped to record a song for the hit children’s television show Yo Gabba Gabba and perform several dates on the southeast tour of YGG’s “Super Music Friends Show.” Their song & video “Imagination Adventure” aired on YGG in Spring 2011. In March 2011, SUNBEARS! officially showcased at SXSW 2011 to a captive Austin audience. Their amazing live show and the sheer joy that their songs exude have put SUNBEARS! in high demand on the road, with support slots on national tours with Mates of State (Barsuk), Black Kids (Columbia Records), Dredg, and Gil Mantera’s Party Dream.

“There’s just no way a sound this big comes from two guys … but apparently it does.” — Alternative Press “Who couldn’t use a little auditory uplifting given the state of the world? I look forward to hearing and seeing what is next for this talented duo!” — Creative Loafing “SUNBEARS! = My New Obsession.” — The Surburban Hipster

Overview

Begun in early 2000, this disc brings together Arto Lindsay, Mike Ladd, Marc Ribot, Sensational, and its leader Seb El Zin, also known for being composer-singer in ITHAK. Claiming the influence of the kabbalist Abdul Vector Von Hassid, this sonic nation distills a raging mix of sharp noisy post-No-Wave guitars and urgent rap. Kiki Picasso’s cover places the recording in a geopolitical context where William Burroughs drops acid with Bin Laden.

“While on the surface it’s easy to dismiss these Masters’ work as mere Pacific Rim pantomime, there is far more going on here than initially meets the ear. Like the best SCG work, they meld a deep respect and studious love for traditional Eastern music with a wild-eyed wackiness that pokes fun at the same things they idolize.” — Dusted

Tour planned for late 2011. Sound samples available on band & label websites. In-house servicing to press, radio, and club DJs. RIYL: IAMX, The Knife, Berlin, Til Tuesday.

Overview

Awakened by the pulsing currents of electro ghosts of the ’80s, The Break Up’s sound can be found in addictive synths, beats, and melodies. Shane Allen Hall conceived the hard beats and captivating melodies of the group and, blending spirit and voice to song, Severina Sol completed the duo. Later they would add Sarah Stewart on keyboards and Rey Guajardo on drums, and like the birth of stars in the night sky, The Break Up would create a great disturbance of movement and sound, color, and depth.

With a new singer in tow, San Pedro, CA’s Rotting Out is back with their first full-length that spans 11 songs and is fast, pissed-off hardcore punk that takes cues from the newer school of hardcore while throwing in influences from South Bay classics like Descendents and Suicidal Tendencies.

Hailing from Los Angeles, Touche Amore set themselves against the glamour and greed of their hometown culture with their passionate debut. Where their demo 7” (No Sleep Records) was full of promise, To The Beat Of A Dead Horse feels fully realized: the guitars bend and weave but always maintain their drive, the rhythms are frequently off-kilter but never off-time, and the vocals are screamed at the edge of breaking up but they’re always exciting. Featuring guest vocals by Geoff Rickly (Thursday) and Jeff Eaton (Modern Life Is War), this is a split release with Rickly’s Collect Records.
