Tchaikovsky was a brilliant and resourceful orchestrator, and probably the greatest writer of ballet music the world has ever known. He wrote the music for The Nutcracker during 1891–92 to a scenario by Marius Petipa. The ballet was first performed in December 1892 at the Maryinsky Theatre, St. Petersburg. Tchaikovsky’s first full-length ballet, Swan Lake, which he worked on in 1875–76 following a scenario by Vladimir Begichev and Vasily Geltzer, was first performed at the Bolshoi Theatre, Moscow in March 1877.
