• Debut album from comedian Kyle Kinane. • Named in the Top 10 of 2010 by The Onion AV Club.
Born and raised in the Chicago area, Kyle Kinane has quickly become a favorite of the Los Angeles comedy scene with his distinctive growling delivery, conversational storytelling style, and penchant for brutal self-deprecation. The London Evening Standard once called Kyle “bleak and misanthropic,” but he prefers to describe himself as a “bag of garbage ... a real pile of trash.” On Death of the Party, Kyle sifts through the debris of a life spent working dead-end jobs and enduring sleepless nights, all the while marveling at the uselessness of his college education. Whether he’s pondering the futility of selling cake decorations over the phone, recounting the first time he took a dump in a bar, or wishfully spinning the fact that he wakes up shirtless in a stranger’s yard once a month as proof that he’s a werewolf, Kyle finds humor in the most unexpected corners of his life.

Jimmy Pardo is the host of the award-winning, trailblazing podcast “Never Not Funny” and the opening act for “Conan” on TBS, but first and foremost he is a revered stand-up comedian who has delighted audiences across the country with his trademark off-the-cuff performance style for over two decades. On his third album, Sprezzatura, Jimmy showcases his famed crowd work skills in an infectiously silly set recorded at Go Bananas in Cincinnati. By weaving stories from his life through the back-and-forth banter with those in attendance, Jimmy forms a special bond with his audience, creating a unique comedy experience that is truly inimitable.

With Voices of Grain, New York-based collective improv trio TOTEM> offers a dazzling sophomore record while expanding the lexicon of creative trio improvisation and jazz electric guitar. The group’s 2008 debut for ESP-Disk’ garnered rave reviews and topped a range of year-end “best of” lists, including tastemakers The Wire and Point of Departure. Under-recorded drummer Andrew Drury supplies a dazzling mix of extended techniques, stirring up waves of raucous energy and directing the musical flow of the trio. Widely acclaimed guitarist Bruce Eisenbeil’s playing is always maddeningly articulate, alternately playing the role of melodicist and flayer of splintered atonality. Bassist Tom Blancarte provides shredding, rumbling harmonic counterpoint and impeccable timing. TOTEM> have outdone themselves, creating one of the most jaw-dropping sets of guitar trio improv yet committed to record … don’t sleep on this! “Aesthetically restless trio.” — Nate Chinen

From his earliest recordings for his own ZOAR imprint and indie stalwart SST Records through to the present, Elliott Sharp has made challenging, free-ranging music that knows no creative or technical bounds. Momentum Anomaly is a collection of compositions for solo acoustic guitar, and the next in a series formally begun with Velocity of Hue in 2003 and continuing with Quadrature, Octal: Book One, and Octal: Book Two. These volumes are in some ways sets of etudes presenting technical possibilities and manifestations of various tuning systems, but at the same time they are among the most personal of Sharp’s music: a feedback loop between formalized concepts often based on extra-musical sources, and that strange internal alchemy that takes place as the inner ear and muscles of musical memory and reflex pass messages and calls-for-action back and forth at faster-than-light speeds. Track Listing: Cognation • GevSong • Distant Entanglement • Chiral • Permutator Key Markets: Hometown: New York. Harrison Bankhead distills his sextet down to a two-saxophone quartet on his second Engine Studios release, Velvet Blue. The title track says a lot about how Harrison leads his band: a laidback introductory groove with the darker, woodier tone of Ed Wilkerson Jr. trading lines with Mars Williams’ brighter voice gives way to a bass solo; Harrison’s tone is warm and quick, and as Avreaayl Ra comes in to accent the lows with some minimalist cymbal work the pressure starts to build. Bankhead’s appeal lies in spontaneously crafting these musical transitions that engage listeners by spanning genres and including disparate ideas.

On the follow-up to his debut Secret Handshake (a far-ranging and well received quartet recording), saxophonist Brian Settles delves into the tenor trio format on his second Engine Studios release, FOLK. Accompanied by longtime collaborators Jeremy Carlstedt (drums) and Corcoran Holt (bass), Settles leads the trio through a program of original compositions inspired by family, friendship, tradition, and art. The trio’s versatility and expressiveness are on display, exploring the depths of each piece with care and imagination. Holt’s warm sound and deliberate pulse combines with Carlstedt’s meticulously loose drumming and attention to detail to accentuate Settles’ beautiful tone, offering an inspired performance by a saxophonist deeply rooted in the jazz tradition, with his own sound and unique approach to the music.

Jazz listeners rejoice — and welcome a trio of newer cats who traffic in high-quality improvisation while appealing to the bulk of humanity not on the intergalactic trip! The Curators play with a unique ferauciousness (fur-rawk-ush-ness): ferocity, raucousness, and deliciousness all rolled into one made-up word. Drummer Joe Hertenstein plays with a noble caveman essence, ham-fisted and unrestrained. From that rhythmic core comes a guttural procession of bass wang and both amplified and acoustic horn. The attitude is punky and brash, and The Curators thank you for listening.

One Indian summer evening, femme fatale bellower Mather Louth (Radio Noir) and punk rock veteran Chopper Franklin (The Cramps, Charley Horse) quickly uncovered a mutual appreciation for murder balladry, Americana, and memento mori. The landscape was further tilled with the addition of Thomas Lorioux (The Kings of Nuthin’) on the upright bass. The Heathens’ debut release, Boot Hill Hymnal, seeks to answer a question posed long ago by Blind Willie Johnson: just what is the soul of a man? (Or, as the case may be here, a woman with a thousand-yard stare). The resulting collection of songs is complex, catchy, and wholly cohesive to the Apostles’ ghost town. The album’s powerful opener paints a supernatural plea for protection against the most primal of evils, while “The Reckoning” tells the terrifying tale of a lone miscreant hell-bent on destruction. However, the Apostles are hardly a one-note wonder with regards to nefarious subject matter, as evidenced by the rousing foot-stomper “Forget-Me-Not.” The band also ensures that listeners will want a second book of Heathen hymnals in the form of forlorn lullaby closer “Lonesome Whistle,” its final chords drifting off like a lone tumbleweed into the fading sunset.

Twenty years after taking her first steps recording vocals for Sella and 12 years after the launch of a solo career with Teen-Beat, Tracy Shedd delivers the most honest, forthright, and insightful album of her career. Arizona, Shedd’s New Granada debut and fifth full-length overall, presents the slowcore songstress in an acoustic duet with guitarist James Tritten. Stripped of all things percussive, distorted, and nearly anything digital, Arizona is a first for the multi-instrumentalist on many accounts. Introduced with melancholy and deliberation, it is reminiscent of her 2001 Teen-Beat release Blue, which declared Shedd as the female Mark Kozelek and indie rock’s Sade.
“Tracy Shedd sings in a unprepossessing, hushed voice that recalls everyone from Mazzy Star and Lush to just about half of early-’90s Britain.”

Psyclon Nine returns with the long awaited [Order of the Shadow: Act I]. Over the past decade, Psyclon Nine has evolved into the epitome of dark metal industrial and has continued to evolve its sound, implementing elements of black metal, post-punk influences, hardcore breaks, and metal. System Syn mastermind Clint Carney has shown a unique combination of prolific musical output and compelling artistic vision. An accomplished musician, songwriter, prop-maker, and painter, Carney has fearlessly used System Syn as a cathartic audio outlet for his vision. The newest album, No Sky To Fall, shows Carney once again pushing the boundaries of his music, further delving into territories examined in the stunning previous album All Seasons Pass. Never one to pigeonhole himself creatively, one of System Syn’s strongest suits has always been his fearless experimentation. iVardensphere, the tribal trance electro outfit headed by Scott Fox, presents its new album The Methuselah Tree. The album opener, the dramatic “Mother of Crows,” sets the tone as world music elements build over medieval tones and operatic vocals. Throughout the song, the ominous, ever-present percussion builds, as does the tension. Segueing into the atmospheric glitches and pulsing electronics of “Bloodline,” the versatility of iVardensphere becomes readily apparent. Steeped in strong psychobilly roots, the Koffin Kats are an institution in punk rock ‘n’ roll. Booze, tattoos, hair grease, hot rods, and infectious riffs pulsate with every note of every track. After six albums and a full decade of traveling the globe and spreading the good news of their Detroit outlaw punk psycho rock ‘n’ roll, the Koffin Kats return with their most definitive recording, Born of the Motor. A sonic homage to their resident city and its automotive legacy, the Koffin Kats charge forward, waving a proud flag soiled with motor oil and whiskey — defying the decay and chaos that has stained their city in recent years.

For the past eight years the The Creepshow have been smashing the world in the face with their brutal mélange of punk, country, psychobilly, and good old fashioned rock ‘n’ roll. They’ve toured the world, sold a metric shit-ton of records, and blown the faces off a gazillion fans. But the road to punk rock infamy hasn’t been paved with rainbows, unicorns, and gumdrops. From robberies and wrecks to line-up changes and countless personal obstacles, this band has lived through it all. And you know what? Instead of crying in their beers and whining like assholes, they got stronger and more determined — and a whole hell of a lot angrier.

Jetty Boys formed in 2006. After about a year of not being in a band together, Eric and Drew decided to start looking for a drummer and start a new band. With a handful of songs ready, they quickly decided on Jon “Bunnz” Mickelson after he proved his ability to execute Bill Stevenson-esque drum rolls. This successful audition came shortly after Bunnz’s attack on a defenseless pumpkin in the D.F.C. kitchen where Eric and Drew once lived together (the D.F.C. was the home where the first audition/band practices were held). After three months of practicing they officially adopted the Jetty Boys name in spring of 2007. By late 2007 the band recorded their first demo, which ended up being their first official release. Since then, they have gone on to play over 400 shows and released two full-lengths a bunch of split records.

This two-CD set is the first of its kind: an in-depth historical examination of the cultural and political relationships between U.S. Latinos and Jews through popular music! The songs feature Jewish artists engaging with Latin styles, and Latino artists engaging with Jewish themes, following the evolution of a musical relationship from early 20th-century novelty songs through 1970s and 1980s salsa classics. The project includes archival images and ephemera, online oral histories, and an extensive booklet of essays written by Steve Berlin of the legendary Chicano band Los Lobos and acclaimed NYC bandleader and pianist Arturo O’Farrill. The range of songs unveils a rarely documented musical genealogy of Jewish-Latino musical interchange in the U.S., moving from early Yiddish rhumba records by Irving Kaufman and the Barton Brothers up through the Catskills mambo experiments of top Latin bandleaders like Machito and Tito Puente, “Hava Nagila” makeovers by legends like Celia Cruz and Damiron, the influential band innovations of Eddie Palmieri, and the 1970s salsa output of artists like Larry Harlow, dubbed “El Judio Maravilloso” by his Latino bandmates.

The album Liebestod, from Polish composer Stefan Wesolowski, consists of repetitive compositions written for piano, brass instruments, strings, and electronics. The title itself is derived from Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde, which says a lot about Wesolowski’s primary inspirations. Liebestod shows a tremendous amount of respect for classical music, but Wesolowski is far from making literal references, instead showing his own unique musical language: rough and radical at some points, yet full of intense nostalgia and beauty.

After releasing three albums in three years (2008’s Dark Undercoat, 2009’s Victorian America, and 2010’s Ode To Sentience), Emily Jane White wrote over 100 sketches between January 2011 and October 2012. Her new album Blood / Lines is a selected compilation of these songs. Recorded in a secluded studio in Sonoma County, the quiet environment provided Emily a place to explore new directions with artistic integrity and creative control, layering synthesizer, electric guitar, and multiple tracks of vocals into nine heavily reverbed scenes. With the help of friends and collaborators, Emily’s worlds were diversified with strings, backing vocals, and heavy drums.
“Enough gothic imagery for an Edgar Allen Poe novel.”
“Emily Jane White’s singing voice, wispy and sweet but undercut with an alluring world-weary weight, lends itself to brow-furrowing introspection and rustic tales of woe.”

Though he’s renowned for his roles in Acid Mothers Temple and Zeni Geva, and for leading the bands Koenjhyakkei and Koekyojinn, since 1985 Ruins has been Tatsuya Yoshida’s primary musical outlet. Beginning in 2006, Yoshida would occasionally fill the vacant second slot with alto saxophonist Ono Ryoko, one of Japan’s most indemand studio musicians. Their duo, Sax Ruins, transforms Yoshida’s compositions from heavy, nimble prog to dense, hyper-kinetic big band jazz, not entirely unlike Sonny Rollins sitting in with Magma and Carl Stalling on the Warner Bros. lot.

In honor of the band’s 25th anniversary, SKiN GRAFT unearths The Beatoffs (White Album), the lost debut LP from Strangulated Beatoffs. A quarter-century after it was recorded, the debut has surfaced bathed in tape hiss, beer, and tongue-in-cheek misanthropy. While some songs would be at home on Sub Pop just a few years later, others anticipate the sound Drag City became renowned for in the ’90s. Beatles standards like “You Know My Name (Look Up the Number)” fit shockingly well into the Beatoffs’ oeuvre, while songs like “Norwegian Wood,” “Ticket To Ride,” and “Don’t Let Me Down” take on new layers of meaning under the Beatoffs’ watch.

Die Krupps, the long-running and venerated German industrial/rock/EBM band, returns with new album The Machinists of Joy. Following the release of the first single “Risikofaktor,” the new album showcases the accumulation of over three decades of growth and influence. Listed as an influence to bands such as Nitzer Ebb, Rammstein, and Depeche Mode, a seamless blend of new influences and the signature sound that Die Krupps helped create makes The Machinists of Joy an impressive piece of work.
“Die Krupps have experimented with various styles of music over the decades and this track rolls it all up into one highly evolved monster. I knew immediately that what I was listening to was destined to be a hit and the commercial release quickly climbed to the top of the Deutsch Alternative Charts and has made itself at home.”

Reissue of an album that has received glowing reviews worldwide! Released to whet the appetite for a new record coming in 2014. Will tour Europe and North America in 2014. RIYL: Jeff Buckley, Led Zeppelin, Dwellers, Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones.
Small Stone is reissuing Bloom for several reasons: first, it is one of the best albums that they have heard, and second, they figured it would be a great way to introduce the band in North America before their brand-new album comes out in 2014. The grand return of the krautrock, and other similar musical pharmaceuticals, have yet again entrenched itself in people’s ears. It is music with a retrospective way of thinking that takes its listeners on adventurous excursions deep into the mindm that aim to broaden your horizons and consciousness. JIRM will make an impact on you in the same way with their second album Bloom, an innovative and highly personal take on psychedelic rock and the very use of its many components and elements. Best described as a mix of alternative pop/rock and electronica, Chris Vrenna’s tweaker blends an intriguing mix of influences and atmospheres. Farthest North is the result of a musical collaboration between Canada’s Parhelion and Australian sound artist Zac Keiller. The idea originated while they both were treading similar thematic ground with their individual projects, mainly that of using the far north as an artistic muse. The end result of that effort is a record that focuses on capturing the essence of this extreme landscape, eschewing the romantic and focusing on the stark, cold immensity and volatility of a place located at the ends of the world. Teetering between the hauntingly sparse and the occasionally chaotically dense, the music attempts to mirror the landscape’s primitive elements. The release comes with a bonus DVD of arctic scenes mixed with album excerpts for a unique audio/visual experience. It is with great honor that Cyclic Law welcomes Canada’s unique, legendary black ambient act Funerary Call to their family. For this new opus, Harlow Macfarlane found inspiration from personal interpretations of the Tree of Death (considered the reverse side of the Tree of Life), a diagram of the evil forces assigned to each Sephiroth. They represent the counter-forces of the 10 divine emanations as described in Lurianic Kabbalah, and the forces that inhabit these dark archaic realms. The constant shifting of sounds and tones is a metaphoric reflection of these various chaotic entities. Built as one continuous piece with various chapters, this new album serves as a vehicle for delving deeply into the shadow side.
