“With this elegant and expressive recording, the Baroque violinist Adrian Chandler returns to a figure that has long fascinated him: Johann Georg Pisendel, the virtuoso violinist credited with inspiring Bach’s solo Sonatas and Partitas for the instrument. It’s fascinating to listen to Pisendel’s own unaccompanied Sonata in A with its brilliant bow work and contrapuntal intricacy, and there is sheer pleasure in Mr. Chandler’s charismatic reading of works by Vivaldi, Montanari, and Albinoni.”
“Obsession is the overriding mental state in this fascinating and technically brilliant recording of works for solo violin. Roman Mints plays with spatial effects in Ysaÿe’s ‘Sonata No. 2’ (Op. 27) and Schnittke’s ‘A Paganini,’ two works that conjure the ghosts of composers past. Silvestrov, Piazzolla, and a haunting new work by Dobrinka Tabakova round out the cast.”

“The remarkable pianist Kirill Gerstein brings technical assurance, characteristic subtlety and a gift for instilling unease to two canonical collections of miniatures — Mussorgsky’s ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’ and Schumann’s ‘Carnaval’ — often played more for their glittering surfaces than their unsettling depths. Well, Mr. Gerstein gets down deep.”

As an opera conductor, de Waart has enjoyed success in a large and varied repertoire in many of the world’s greatest opera houses. Its inexhaustible commitment to the highest artistic quality and a balanced program qualifies the RFO as one of the best orchestras in the Netherlands. This disc is focused on Wagner’s early Symphony in C, a rarely recorded work. Written and published in 1832, the Symphony has a Beethovenian touch and was lavishly praised by Robert Schumann. The release is completed by two popular pieces: excerpts from Tristan and Isolde (including a Nachtgesang arranged for solo orchestra by composer Henk de Vlieger), and the sweet Siegfried Idyll.

The Sixteen Harry Christophers: conductor Grace Davidson, Charlotte Mobbs: soprano Simon Berridge, Jeremy Budd, Mark Dobell: tenor Ben Davies, Eamonn Dougan: bass MONTEVERDI: Vespers of 1610 “There is a sense of deep familiarity with the music in this recording, a feeling of easiness with Monteverdi’s harmonic and, especially, rhythmic vocabulary that lends a tripping lightness to the performances.” — International record Review Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610 is quite simply one of the greatest works of sacred music ever written, without doubt the most varied and inspired before Handel and Bach began composing their oratorios and passions. Its variety alone makes it unique, from thrilling psalm settings with virtuosic writing for both multi-part choir and instrumentalists, to exotic and sensual settings of texts from the Song of Songs for solo voices. Every movement is full of luscious harmonies, drama, and evocative musical language. Review & Airplay Copies sent to U.S. press and radio stations. Formed in 1996, the Cypresses added Beethoven to their repertoire early on. Their signature sound, which is clear and transparent, built up from the bottom register and layered like a pyramid, lends itself beautifully to the Middle String Quartets. The album went to the top of the Billboard Classical Chart, and was nominated for a Grammy®. These can sit alongside anything written in this genre.” — MusicWeb International Following their critically acclaimed debut recording of the complete string trios of Hans Gál and Hans Krása, which garnered a Gramophone Editor’s Choice, Ensemble Epomeo turns to music by Eastern European and Russian composers written in the latter half of the 20th century. Each work bears a distinct personal compositional stamp, providing for captivating listening and enlightening contrasts: the Polish Penderecki’s dramatic and lyrical String Trio of 1990–91, the Russian compositional giant Schnittke’s String Trio of 1985, the haunting Trio of the increasingly recognized and respected Weinberg from 1950, and the ever-enigmatic Hungarian Kurtág, whose continuously evolving signs, games and messages represent a collection of highly individual miniatures.

On this disc, Polaris is coupled with the world premiere recording of Australian Paul Stanhope’s Piccolo Concerto. Paul is an emerging Australian composer, and was awarded the Charles Mackerras Scholarship continuing his studies at the Guildhall School of Music in London. Carl Loewe, nearly a contemporary of Franz Schubert, composed several lieder with similar lyrics. Roman Trekel is one of the world’s leading baritones, focusing more and more on performing the art of Lied.

The Sinking of the Titanic CD: GVB 21 Price Code: R (SRP $17.99) Number of Discs: 1 Jewel Case, Box Lot 25
This live recording of The Sinking of the Titanic was made during the Gavin Bryars Ensemble’s tour in 2012, the centenary year of the disaster. In one performance, it brings together elements that have appeared separately in the various versions that precede it: the inclusion of improvising turntablist Philip Jeck; the presence of a second quartet of low strings that consists of Bryars’ four children; the faint allusion to Aphex Twin’s remix “The Raising of the Titanic,” made shortly after the release of the 1994 recording; and the water gong first used by percussionist Martin Allen on a raft at the shallow end of a renovated Art Nouveau swimming pool in Brussels. Although there have been four previous recordings, according to the composer this performance and recording is as near to definitive as is ever likely.

Phillip COOKE
Phillip Cooke (b.1980) is a new and distinctive voice to emerge from among today’s young British composers. This recording is the first devoted entirely to his music, and features a selection of recent sacred and secular choral works suitable for chamber choir. The disc includes his largest choral work to date, “The Hazel Wood,” and another large-scale secular work, “Invocation,” together with his Morning and Evening Canticles, a selection of motets, and three modern Partsongs. The changeable colors and moods of the Lake District, where he grew up, have strongly influenced his compositional style; this is approachable, but original music, recognizably British but with hints of dark, stormy undertones that give his works a unique flavor. Phillip Cooke is a composer to watch, and we are delighted to bring his work to a wider audience!

The Schwabach-born composer Adolph Henselt is mostly known as father of the Russian piano elite, being trained at conservatories all over Russia. However, this virtuoso was also a fantastic composer. On this CD from pianist Stefan Burkhardt, Henselt’s romantic chamber music has been rediscovered. Henselt appears as a composer who challenged the technical and aesthetic possibilities of his time, albeit with a pleasing gesture! This CD includes ten remarkable first recordings; the Duo, Op. 14 has been recorded and published before in the version for piano and French horn.

Sleeveless Records Lionel Handy: cello Nigel Clayton: piano ˚ Sonata ARMSTRONG: Sonata for cello and piano (premiere) • MARTINU: No. 2 • THOMPSON: Sonatina for cello and piano (premiere) For four years, the lives of the three composers of this album overlapped, and these pieces speak of human experience during and after World War II. Bohuslav Martinu˚ (1890–1959) wrote three major cello sonatas. In addition to his stylistically pivotal Second Cello Sonata, this disc showcases two premiere CD recordings of works finished 40 years later. John Barton Armstrong’s epic one-movement Cello Sonata from 1981 was broadcast by BBC Radio 3 in 1987, but the score has been recently published by Fand Music, who also published ˚ Cello Peter Thompson’s Cello Sonatina. Having already recorded Martinu’s Sonata No. 1, and fresh from their recent all-Bax CD, cellist Lionel Handy and pianist Nigel Clayton have also given a number of concert performances of these works, further informing their authoritative readings in this colorful program spanning three generations.

Spirituale
An Englishman in Italy
This new CD from Sheva Collection presents many of Liszt’s clearly religious-inspired works. Specifically, “Légendes” and the “Harmonies poétiques et religieuses” are eloquent examples of this spiritual vocation. Liszt’s genius and absolute mastery of musical language is clear from Ivan Doncheb’s sublime playing.

The early 19th century saw the opening up of tourism and a new appreciation of the picturesque value of the former classical world. British composers were not immune to the attractions of Italy, nor to the charms of the quickly-developing genre piece!

They had the idea initially to make an album of “alternative” Christmas carols, and got together with their friend and colleague Tony Maloney to start their research. This they did mainly in the library of the English Folk Song and Dance Society at Cecil Sharp House in London, and soon found there was a wealth of material from all over the world dating back as far as the fifth century AD! The songs for this album consist of a number of unjustly neglected music. Their approach was to take well-known songs (such as “The Holly and the Ivy”) and reinterpret them with different tunes, or to take a notated tune and simply interpret it, without any constraints of tradition or style.

Some of the carols feature brass in rousing fanfares and uplifting accompaniments, and the collection comes to a thrilling conclusion with “Hark! the Herald Angels Sing” in the unique version sung every Christmas in St. Patrick’s to the tune of Handel’s’ See, the conqu’ring hero comes from Judas Maccabeus.

The astonishingly prolific John Gardner has yet to receive his due rewards, and still remains one of the most original and intriguing figures in English 20th-century music. The Cantata for Christmas, scored for double choir and small orchestra, receives its world premiere recording here. It opens similarly to Honegger’s Christmas Cantata, written about 14 years earlier, and uses the German Advent chorale “Wie schon leuchtet.” The texts used include “Ode on the birth of our Saviour” by Robert Herrick, which is followed by “Les anges dans nos campagnes” set in the original French. The album also includes eight Christmas carols, some using the traditional melodies, like “Good King Wenceslas.”
