A tuneful collision of Athens institutions finds fruition this fall when Orange Twin releases Vic Chesnutt’s collaboration with Elephant 6 originals Elf Power. As intriguing as this combination may seem for hardcore fans of either act, the final sonic results reveal a daunting sum much greater than even the involvement of such esteemed parts would imply. The Elves’ lived-in dexterity as a live band goads Chesnutt’s vocal delivery to a menacing new muscularity, imbuing this batch of songs with a sinister vibe not dissimilar to John Cale’s black classic Fear, the harsh & articulate sleaze of Lou Reed’s Street Hassle, or the defeated low-key soul music of Nick Lowe’s last few records. Chesnutt’s songwriting retains its trademark literary bent—central songs carry the narrative weight, sturdy construction, and lexical mystery of a long lost Raymond Carver story. And as he woos you with his squelched, beautiful melodies, his sonic turns-in-the road take an even stranger tack with the aid of psych-pop veterans Elf Power. Recorded over the course of a winter by Vic Chesnutt and Derek Almstead in Chesnutt’s own attic studio, Dark Developments revels in the intimate, home-recorded atmosphere you’d expect from an Athenian union like this. Elf Power’s tripped-out pop smarts provide the contradictory musical notions that never allow the album to sway too far in one bleak direction or another: it’s that friction extant between Chesnutt’s shadowy worldview and the inventive bounce and bray of the band’s joyful chemistry that buoys the album, provides freshness, and makes for highly rewarding repeated listening. Dark Developments stands as a classic addition to the legendary local pantheon.

“[Vic Chesnutt’s] harrowing storysongs strike somewhere between a Flannery O’Connor novel and a junkie’s lament.” — Rolling Stone

AWAKE MY SOUL/HELP ME TO SING

Press Quotes

“To quote Leonard Cohen, ‘God is alive, magic is afoot’ in the soaring magnificence of Southern sacred-harp choirs, a robust, harmonically intricate blend of country joy and unearthly drone.” — David Fricke, Rolling Stone

Selling Points • A 2XCD set with over 40 tracks of previously unreleased music. • The critically acclaimed documentary Awake, My Soul aired on PBS stations and has been featured by NPR, TIME, Pitchfork, Chicago Tribune, Paste, and more. • Features John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin), Rayna Gellert (Uncle Earl), The Innocence Mission, Murry Hammond (Old 97’s), Doc Watson, Richard Buckner, Mac Powell (Third Day), and Rick Moody, novelist of Garden State and The Ice Storm. • Beautifully packaged with a 32-page booklet and a limited edition handbill, hand-printed on an early 20 th century letterpress. • Produced and compiled by Matt Hinton, co-director of Awake, My Soul. • Publicity by Daniel Gill at Force Field PR.

Overview A 2XCD set made up of the soundtrack for the acclaimed Sacred Harp documentary Awake, My Soul:The Story of the Sacred Harp and a compilation of artists performing their arrangements of Sacred Harp songs. The soundtrack CD contains some of the finest recordings of traditional Sacred Harp singing, a beautifully haunting and powerful form of a cappella shapenote singing. Help Me to Sing, on the other hand, features such diverse artists as John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin), Rayna Gellert (of all-female old-time string band Uncle Earl), The Innocence Mission, Murry Hammond (Old 97’s), Danielson (subjects of the awardwinning documentary Danielson: A Family Movie), Doc Watson, Richard Buckner, Elvis Perkins, Grammy-winning bluegrass artist & songwriter Jim Lauderdale, Mac Powell (singer of the multi-platinum selling and Grammy-winning band Third Day), Rick Moody (novelist of Garden State and The Ice Storm), and many more. Help Me to Sing is noteworthy in that it contains 19 tracks commissioned especially for this album, and it will certainly free Sacred Harp from any perception of being “difficult music.” Indeed, the fact that stands out most strikingly on this record is the utter beauty of the melodies. Though most of these songs were written over 100 years ago, their melodies and lyrical themes are certain to resonate profoundly with our generation.

THE ORGAN THIEVES EP

Press Quotes “Soul-saving, ’80s indie-sodden soundtrack to the gloomy underground parties your mum never warned you about.” — NME “More than coming off as rote homage to British post-punk, The Organ feels like the genuine article, forgotten for decades, but finally unearthed.” — Ink19 “Anchored by a pumping Hammond organ, the songs on Grab That Gun are often quirky and unconventional, a record for daydreaming about breaking hearts and basement suites in the winter.” — New York Times (from Tegan and Sara’s playlist) “Grab That Gun is a fine debut that captures The Organ’s knack for writing strangely timeless, and beautifully sad, songs.” — All Music Guide

Overview Fans of The Organ, bittersweet melodies, and sad songs take note: on October 14th Mint Records will unveil Thieves, a six-song EP that serves as the band’s final farewell. After an all-too-brief but wildly successful stint in the spotlight—to the dismay of legions of fans worldwide—Vancouver’s The Organ called it quits in 2006, with Katie, Jenny, Schmoo, Debra, and Shelby heading their separate ways. At the time of the breakup, the band had been working on several new songs, and some months later the members began discussing the possibility of bringing these remaining gems to life. In 2007, The Organ briefly regrouped and headed back into the studio to quietly record these six remaining unrecorded songs, originally meant to be part of a follow-up to their 2004 debut full-length Grab That Gun.

“They are the rare Vancouver act that trumps the system, belonging everywhere and nowhere at once. The ambiguous, Le Tigre-tinged sex appeal of their five female members only serves to deepen The Organ’s mystery further still.” — SPIN ALSO AVAILABLE

• Contains “Slight of Hand” as heard in the film Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist starring Michael Cera and Kat Dennings. The band will also appear on the film’s soundtrack. • Produced by Adam Lasus (Yo La Tengo, Helium). • Features drumming by the legendary Pete Thomas of Elvis Costello & The Attractions. • First album release from Justin Kennedy (of Pinwheel, co-fronted by Ben Gibbard). • Full press & online campaign by Big Hassle (Nirvana, Blur). • Full college and specialty radio campaign by Pirate! Promotions.

Overview The music of Army Navy is best described as impeccably crafted melody over blankets of guitar fuzz that create a delicate balance between melancholy and joyful resignation. For inspiration, the band looks to groups from the past like Teenage Fanclub, The Smiths, The Posies, and The Libertines while still keeping a firm eye on the future. Aided in the studio by producer Adam Lasus (whose previous credits include Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Helium, and Yo La Tengo), the band eschewed the major label process to release its eponymous debut in the US under its own label, The Fever Zone, in the Fall 2008. With a firm lineup, an explosive live show, and a fair smattering of internet and magazine press, the band is beginning to attract a steady following in their adopted hometown of Los Angeles. They’ve shared the stage with such acts as The Arctic Monkeys, Wolfmother, and Teenage Fanclub, and have recorded an exclusive song to be on the soundtrack of the new Michael Cera movie Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist. The band’s advice to fans of indie pop everywhere can be echoed by a review in Pitchfork, which urges people to “catch a whiff of Army Navy’s sweet jangle.”

“There’s sunshine in those guitars, but their melancholia can only stem from souls rooted in a country where tinned meat is considered family food.” — NME

nail welcomes MODULAR MOODS to its roster! Based in Brooklyn, Modular Moods and sister company Shemspeed provide the perfect home for artists such as C Rayz Walz and Kosha Dillz. The label is globally conscious, producing a variety of hip-hop, rock, klezmer-jazz, and Middle Eastern music. Other acts on the roster include Y-Love, Diwon, Smadar, Balagan, and Yuri Lane. The company’s M.O. is promoting racial tolerance through music.

C-RAYZ WALZ & KOSHA DILLZ Press Quotes

FREESTYLE VS. WRITTEN

“Freestyle vs.Written is a hip-hop album meant to foster cultural solidarity between black and Jewish communities, much like Michael Lerner and Cornel West’s 1995 bestseller Jews and Blacks: Let The Healing Begin.” — Plug One “Kosha Dillz is not only a clever play on words, but also presents a rarely seen culture clash in music. He voices his political opinions on foreign affairs and oppression with fresh rhymes. This makes him a universal voice.” — URB

Selling Points • A very different kind of album, and a fresh style for the seasoned C-Rayz Walz. • With a ’70s rock feel and a classic hip-hop vibe, this album bridges cultural and racial divides through hip-hop. • 10% of the album sales will go to charity. • Print and new media promotion by Modular Moods and Shemspeed. • Radio promotion by Foundation Media. • Ads with various Jewish and hip-hop oriented outlets.

Overview Indie hip-hop icon C-Rayz Walz teams up with fresh-faced, yeshiva-trained wordsmith Kosha Dillz for twelve tracks that mix freestyle and written rhymes; classic and new-school beats; and the frantic, fast-paced energy of a manic 24-hour recording session to produce Freestyle vs.Written, the first collaboration of its type. It’s an album that breaks borders and pushes boundaries. Songs like “I Love Jews” and “Ariel Sharon” are packed with classic hip rock samples and party moving sounds. C-Rayz Walz is indie hip-hop’s savior, king, and master freestyle legend. He has performed with everyone in the biz and has loads of fans around the world. Kosha Dillz is an upcoming Israeli-American hip-hop artist who has put the Zionist swagger back in being Jewish. A flashy pinky ring style and gold-star dress code, using crowd-moving beats and profound lyrics in Hebrew, English, and Spanish to shift the listener’s homeostasis, this unorthodox boom-bapist’s knowledge of emceeing brings back the pride that you might have once lost.

Overview To describe this quartet’s music is as futile as explaining the cosmos itself. Highlights of Mazurek’s cornet resume include Isotope 217, Mandarin Movie, Chicago Underground, the mighty Exploding Star Orchestra, and the cover of The Wire. The three Brazil natives are all percussionists, thus explaining the group’s dynamic nature. Both Mauricio Takara and Guilherme Granado additionally control samplers and electronics, as well as perform in the band Hurtmold. Granado, a true original, fronts the São Paulo band Bodes and Elephantes (Submarine Records), and has the ear of a free jazz player with the arranger’s mentality of Gal Costas. And then there’s Richard “Hollywood” Ribiero, who drives this quartet in fifth gear similarly to Albert Ayler or Funkadelic, and also leads the power trio Sao Paulo Debate. Starting off as a project between Mazurek and Takara with their debut release in 2006, the duo’s “walls of sound” could not be contained. Additional members joined, creating a mammoth quartet whose sound became comparable to a psychedelic walk on another planet, orbiting the cosmos near Sun Ra’s intergalactic Arkestra. After a short pause, the planetary dragons breathed fire into their free samba, thus creating a juxtaposition of texture, rhythm, and psychedelia. Brazil’s tropicalia had launched full throttle into the new millennia, where melody had morphed into a new medium of expression. Drums and horns collided at a new crossroads, and the new beast never looked back.

Press Quotes “Don’t let the name fool you … there is nothing light about Light FM. Their debut album is loaded with enough catchy hooks to sink a battleship.” — RockInsider.com “Light FM is a huff of cosmic dust from a planet far, far away. Led by Josiah Mazzaschi, the crackpot mastermind behind the legendary Chicago unit Motorhome, this hypnotic array of perky zingers are fueled by maddening keyboards and gooey electro-pop that combines for a sizzling salvo like The Cars crashing a surprise party for Devo. Light FM is the quintessential fuse of ’80s synth-pop, disassembled and rearranged in the 2008 digital age with all of the glamour and celebrity of the smoking hot stars in Los Angeles as its supernatural backdrop.” — TheTripWire.com “Mazzaschi has long been a talent worth watching—a sharp songwriter with memorable melodies and a distinctive guitarist.” — Chicago Sun Times

Overview Light FM is trying to play a trick on you. In fact, there is absolutely nothing light about this band. Buried underneath the hooks that refuse to leave your head and singer Josiah Mazzaschi’s perfect pop songwriting lurks a monster—a dark, amplified, fuzzed-out monster who can sing just as easily about depression and suicide as he can about love and California sunshine. But what sets Light FM’s music apart is that there’s no hipster sarcasm in Mazzaschi’s voice when he sings about death and body bags while surf rock guitar riffs shimmer over three-part Beach Boys harmonies. In fact, if you’re paying attention, it’s so earnest that it’s downright disturbing. And that’s Light FM’s secret weapon: in an era awash with brain-numbing irony and I-don’t-give-a-fuck music personas, here comes a band who is unafraid of sincere emotion, even if it swings back and forth from a chemically imbalanced preoccupation with death to a fragile romantic idealism so tender it makes your heart hurt. Light FM is a band devoid of hipster self-awareness, either by nature or by design; a band that proudly wears its heart on its sleeve. It’s a credit to Mazzaschi’s talent that his combination of dark humor and tenderness blends so effortlessly to evoke bands like The Pixies, The Kinks, and The Cars—bands who wrote pop songs but who never shied away from noise or unconventional instrumentation. Light FM has been playing in and around Los Angeles for the past year, sharing bills with The Spinto Band, Great Northern, Parsons Redheads, Division Day, Earlimart, and Jason Lytle (Grandaddy). They recently completed the much-coveted Monday night residency at the Silver Lake Lounge, and have been featured in Kevin Bronson’s Buzz Bands column in the LA Times.

Press Quotes “Tim Hecker plays with pink-into-white noise, tinkling synths that float between the speakers, the occasional over-the-airwaves voice, and knotty samples of guitar with the Earth-drone pedal pushed to the jet-black metal.” — Pitchfork “Tim Hecker’s deft hand at creating textural masses where melodic beauty, even tenderness, and granular noise coexist in a manner that inevitably invites comparison to Fennesz.” — Stylus “[Aidan Baker creates] an intriguing exploration of worlds of tactile sensualism … and a deeper look at the inner forces and powerful unseen drives that lurk below. • Tim Hecker is one the major figures in the genre of experimental electronica. His last full length, Harmony in Ultraviolet, was voted #14 in the Pitchfork list Top 50 of 2006. • Aidan Baker is the founding member of ambient doom band Nadja. • Extensive promo materials will be sent out to print and electronic media outlets as well as college radio. • Ads with various outlets.

Overview This release sees the pairing of Aidan Baker and Tim Hecker, two of Canada’s brightest musicians currently operating in the world of abstract electronic music. Tim Hecker has been enjoying the rewards of a stellar career and discography, void of filler, due to his incredibly high quality control. His most recent full length, Harmony in Ultraviolet, was viewed as a major release in the genre of experimental-electronic music. Aidan Baker works under very different circumstances, releasing material both as a solo artist and as a member of the duo Nadja—in abundance on par with that of Merzbow or the late Muslimgauze. Thankfully, Baker has the ability to record and write new music quickly without sacrificing the quality of his art. One listen to this release and it is fairly evident how these two artists came to collaborate in the first place. It is immediately apparent that both artists have a penchant for creating an incredibly powerful blend of ambient noise.

Press Quotes “Indian Jewelry’s music is surprisingly coherent. Underneath the rowdy synthesizers and absurdist lyrics, a steady pulse prevails.” — Washington Post “Indian Jewelry have invented their own sonic language through which to pump all their endless paranoia, panache, and aplomb. Overview It may have been a while since you last heard from Indian Jewelry. In 2006, several members of the band’s songwriting and performance team found the bitch of fame licking them on the hand. Blinded by vanity, easy fame, self-love, and the internet, they went into an early retirement. For the last two years, they have holed up between a private compound in Chicago and a private residence in Houston. There, they put a light to the holes in their shoes and set to work on a perfect vision of the future. In this time, many people have attempted to wear their clothes and walk their dogs. Stop! These dogs can walk themselves. Keep your ears open for the dulcet thunder. Free Gold is just a key. A key to a perfect vision of the future. This vision is known by many names. Dog Cult. Many-Headed Persons. Blockhead. Free Gold was made to show you one simple thing: you have the power! It is in your hands, within your reach. You don’t have to walk alone. Indian Jewelry was gone, but now they’re coming back and there’s going to be a bloodbath.

Overview Pas Chic Chic is a band apart, formed in Autumn 2005. After the release of their first 7” single in 2006, they quickly gained the reputation as one of Canada’s brightest new acts and found themselves embraced by the online tastemakers worldwide, despite their lyrics being in French. The Montreal quintet’s lineup features former members of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Set Fire To Flames, Fly Pan Am, and Cursed, and sees the group venturing in new directions previously unexplored in their rich musical past. Debut album Au Contraire was released in Canada on the 50th anniversary of the BBC founding the Radiophonic Workshop that was created for the purpose of experimenting with new ways of using electronics to create new forms of music. Pas Chic Chic now continues where the BBC left off. With echoes of Roxy Music, Neu!, Os Mutantes, Francois de Roubaix, and My Bloody Valentine, the band weaves through their influences while creating a whole new vein of pop. The enigmatic French male vocals evoke a darkened Serge Gainsbourg, only for the ethereal singing of MarieDouce to bring back the Technicolor. Their fractured melodies, cinematic arrangements, driving rhythms, and retro-futuristic synths simultaneously bring to mind psychedelia, shoegaze, and tropicalia. This is pop music with one foot in the past and the other in the distant future.

Press Quotes “Pas Chic Chic’s sound is at once huge and ethereal.” — Eye Weekly

Overview The first single off Pas Chic Chic’s highly anticipated debut album! “Haydée Morcelée” blends avant-garde electronic swirls, ’60s French pop, and shoegaze with an expertise rarely heard in today’s indie music scene. The exclusive non-album track “Blindé D’Attention” is equally as daring, with it’s Krautrock-meets-Sixties pop sensibility. Although sung in French, these two songs validate all the praise the band received and demonstrate their ability to win over English-speaking fans.

nail welcomes SIGNED BY FORCE to its roster! Signed By Force Records is a new Montreal label that caters to the louder side of the indie music scene. Every release pushes the envelope through a different vein of punk and hard rock, and shows that there is still plenty of room for innovation. This is forward-thinking rock ‘n’ roll that rips holes through the ozone layer without even trying.

Press Quotes “This is enlightened, intelligent primitivism without the shtick, and this band sounds ever more like it’s one focused song away from the dreaded breakthrough hit.” — Montreal Gazette “A forceful, no bullshit stomper that comes off like the Strokes fucked up on whiskey and uppers. Loud, brash, and full of fire, Cold Burns is an accomplished record from a band that deserves to be heard.” — Now Magazine “It’s adventurous enough to make the case that the Arcade Fire, Besnard Lakes, and Wolf Parade aren’t the only reasons to move to Montreal. That the disc also rocks like fuck is no accident.” — The Georgia Straight “There’s not nearly enough sex-crazed blues punk in this world, so we’re damn lucky to have Montreal’s Starvin Hungry flying the flag—and with style.” — Toronto Star

Overview “Punk rock” is too small a phrase to contain Starvin Hungry’s second album. The Montreal quartet has consumed influences from every era of rock to cook up something that recalls the highly individualized “thinking man’s punk” of early pioneers like the Voidoids, Wire, and The Wipers, as well as the ferocious sexual splatter of The Stooges and Pussy Galore. Cold Burns brings something new to the table through the use of alternately tuned guitars and unusual chord changes served on a warm plate of classic hooks and danceable punk. Recorded by the infinitely versatile Jace Lasek of Besnard Lakes fame, this is the sound of rock ‘n’ roll moving backward and forward. Originally formed as a two piece by singer/guitarist John Milchem and his twin brother Glen Milchem (drummer of Blue Rodeo), Starvin Hungry gradually expanded the formation to a four-piece that has had members of D.O.A., SNFU, Deadly Snakes, Soft Canyon, and Tricky Woo in its evolving lineup. The band’s current incarnation has cemented their reputation as one of Canada’s hottest live acts, and recently toured the US with the Besnard Lakes.

Press Quotes “They find the previously nonexistent common ground in your CD collection between Big Black and Bis, crafting a perfect radio-ready hook and then burying it in screeching noise that ensures the song will come nowhere near an actual radio, coming off like Fountains of Wayne Kramer. These days, music this fun is usually made by assholes in cheerleader costumes—find it with four guys who look like IT dudes instead.” — Paper Thin Walls “Post-punk fractures and rhythms plus frantic enthusiasm label this music as very ‘modern’ indeed. Layers of fuzz ride out on rapid waves from feedbackheavy guitars, landing in the lap of percussion so violent that they blend with it, softening edges but creating new shapes and suggestions of edge in the spaces between the guitars, the synths, the drums, and the singer’s frantic, feverishly earnest voice.” — Splendid

Selling Points • Mixed by John Congleton (The Paper Chase). • Mastered by Devin Ocampo at Silver Sonya. • US tours throughout Fall 2008. • Multiple videos planned to accompany release. • Publicity by Yarr! PR. • Radio by Fanatic Promotion.

Overview Put Brainiac, Orson Welles, Pere Ubu, Prince, Mick “Cactus Jack” Foley, and Nikola Tesla into a wrestling ring for a battle royale. Who’d win? Well, Mick Foley, because he actually has the training. But the real answer is “the listening public,” because the gigantic universe-defending robot that would rise from the sum of these parts like the vehicle-based Voltron would be IfIHadAHiFi, a wall of noise hiding instantly infectious hooks, dance beats, and broken bones. Things never come easy for an antagonistic lot trying to write pop songs about weird science, roadside Wisconsin, and true crime. But since 2000, HiFi have slowly built a loyal core following via two full-length CDs, a split LP with Modern Machines, five national tours, gobs of college radio play and positive press—including a spot in Alternative Press’ 100 Bands You Need To Hear In 2005—as well as an always-captivating and combustible live show. If IfIHadAHiFi were a recently canceled Joss Whedon TV series, the letter-writing campaign to bring them back on the air would be fervent, long-sustaining, and a bit vulgar. But that’s the HiFi all over—too annoying and stubborn to go away. 2008 brings the release of the band’s third full-length, Fame By Proxy, which ups the pop-noise ante as far as it’s ever been upped in the group’s eight-year history. Recorded by Shane Olivo in Milwaukee, mixed by John Congleton (The Paper Chase) in Texas, and mastered at Silver Sonya in DC, the disc brings more hooks, more obtusely nerdy subject material, and more tinnitus. More touring is in the works, too, and it’s sure to bring more chaos, and more cacophony. Just another year in the life of IfIHadAHiFi.

Press Quotes “[Jaina’s songs] are carved from nostalgia, but with polished, adult themes. His voice is urgent yet ultra-melodic.” — The Oregonian “The blend of clarinets, accordion, violin, keyboards, random percussion, and guitar sounds like the anthems made for the most glorious hobo nation on earth—sort of Tom Waits playing at a kangaroo carnival, with brief interruptions for the funeral of Paul Simon and Elvis Perkins.” — Seattle Weekly

Overview 2008 will have seen the release of two Nick Jaina albums. The first, in the spring, was Wool, an album of piano ballads and lullabies. Now, from Hush Records, comes his second album of the year: A Narrow Way, a full-band album featuring aggressively memorable songs recorded in a unique way in order to capitalize on the energy of the live performance skills of Jaina’s band. This album was played entirely by ten musicians in the same room at the same time, all mixed live to 1/4” analog tape. If one person out of the ten missed a note or played the wrong part, the whole take had to be done over. This lack of a safety net gave the recordings a heightened sense of focus and purpose, similar to the manner in which albums were recorded in the fifties and sixties, before the Beatles inspired everyone to overthink everything. On A Narrow Way, every instrument leaps off the tape with immediacy and humanity. Meanwhile, the lyrics deal with the narrow path that people must take to do right in the world. There is fear all around—fear of being different, fear of being the same—and in the middle is the narrow way, a small path that may be hard to stay on, but that leads to very good things.

• A Narrow Way • Walking Into a Burning House • That’s the Kind of Fruit You Leave on the Vine • Battleground • Eleanor • Winding Sheet • I Forget My Name • That Tired Tired Lie • Singing The Devil’s Tune • Planters Field • I Know I’m Your Man

Overview Nashville-based singer-songwriter collective Blue Eyed Blacks (a name originally derived from The Jesus & Mary Chain lyrics), release their debut album on Chicken Ranch. The band is fronted by Louisiana native Jason Moon Wilkins, a fixture of the Nashville music scene for years in various roles: as an artist (with former Dedicated records band toybean), a bassist (for Josh Rouse, Garrison Starr, and others), a DJ, a tour manager, a festival organizer, and more. After a lengthy hiatus away from the spotlight, Wilkins brings his own songs back to the fore with an amazing debut album produced by Neilson Hubbard (Glen Phillips, Matthew Perryman Jones). Jason Moon Wilkins has certainly seen some ridiculous incidents during his music career. Back in his first band, The Rest, he experienced everything from major label attention to a tour cancellation after the drummer’s girlfriend sold his drum kit for crack and lead singer Kevin Travis’ incarceration as an accomplice to second degree murder (whew...). At the climax of it all, Wilkins decided to make the move to Nashville and made himself a regular fixture in the Nashville music scene. After a long break from the music scene he has finally returned, this time forming his own music project and recruiting many artists he had worked with in the past to help him with his dream. Two years in the marking, this record features special guests that include folk-rock artist Garrison Starr, vocalist Betsy Roo (who co-wrote the Dolly Parton song “Jesus & Gravity”), Justin Townes Earle (Bloodshot Records), Billy Mercer (Ryan Adams), Rollum Haas (The Features, Brendan Benson), John Deaderick (Patty Griffin, Michael McDonald), and a slew of others.

Press Quotes “This baby is a scorcher. Taking a cue from two of my favorite bands—The Misfits and Hagfish—800 Octane don’t skimp on the rock or the whoawhoas.” — Fat City

Selling Points • Fifth national release. Catalog sales history of over 7,000 units. • Produced, engineered, and mixed by Conrad Uno at Egg Studios (Mudhoney, Supersuckers, Nashville Pussy, Zeke). • Constantly tour OR, WA, CA & MT. • Have shared the stage with known punk artists Guttermouth, Face To Face, ALL, Saves the Day, The Deviates, Sum 41, Tiger Army, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, New Found Glory, and more. • Multiple magazine interviews and reviews scheduled for Oct–Dec 2008. • Ads with Alternative Press, Skratch, AMP, Highwire Daze, Punk Planet, Thrasher, Mean Street, Rockpile, East Coast Rocker, Aquarian, and Illinois Entertainer. • Have appeared on numerous compilations with artists like NOFX, Strung Out, Bouncing Souls, Millencolin, No Use for a Name, RX Bandits, Starting Line, New Found Glory, and more. • Full color postcards handed out at all venues played. • Heavy marketing in Portland, OR. Thousands of color postcards and posters distributed to select venues and stores. • Service to college & city radio. • Service to magazines, online sites, and promoters for review.

Overview 800 Octane is probably one of the hardest-working bands you’ve never heard of. Every independent band strives to make that claim, but 800 Octane has been playing nonstop for well over 14 years in a genre that goes in and out of style as often as the tide changes. Respect has been slowly earned by sheer willpower, and in return 800 Octane has been given the chance to play with many of their influences and idols including The Misfits, Tiger Army, The Living End, Guttermouth, UK Subs, H2O, Strike Anywhere, New Found Glory, ALL, Strung Out, TSOL, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Bigwig, Sum 41, Saves The Day, The Loved Ones, Poison Idea, Face To Face, Gwar, and even three appearances on the Warped Tour. Not bad for a DIY punk band that prefers zombies to politics. 800 Octane’s fifth studio album completes a trilogy of CDs recorded with Conrad Uno (of Seattle’s legendary Egg Studios). Although the title may suggest a somber series of songs to honor the dead, it’s ironically their most lively album to date, with more speed, more melody, and more variety than prior albums. With 18 tracks in just under 44 minutes, the songs and hooks come at you fast and furious. Topics range from movies and girls to monsters, and then back again before you realize it. These songs aren’t meant to change the world. They are intended to give anyone with a pulse (or without one) a chance to get their blood flowing a little bit faster.

Overview There has got to be something in the water. That’s the only way to explain the high levels of consistently excellent, sludgy bands to come oozing out of Albany, NY. Born from the ashes of the critically acclaimed Greatdayforup, Ironweed is a veritable supergroup of local veterans. With the demise of GDFU, the core group of Mike Vitali, Brendan Slater, and Jim Feck began the arduous task of putting a band back together. Due to the concurrent demise of Albany favorite Held Under, the boys were able to add Jeff Andrews’exceptional vocal chords. The considerable skills and second guitar of Ryan Rapp (Endicott) filled out the Ironweed sound. Since 2007, Ironweed has earned nationwide recognition on the metal/stoner rock circuit, tearing up stages both big and small. Their anticipated Small Stone debut shows a band at the peak of its game.

ARTHUR RUSSELL LOVE IS OVERTAKING ME

Press Quotes

“Audika’s reissue program is an act of devoted, some might say obsessive, scholarship and curatorship that deserves every bit of acclaim it’s received.” — Pitchfork

Selling Points • Previously unreleased folk, pop, and country material (including demos cut for John Hammond Sr.). • College and NPR radio service. • Blog, e-media, and press service.

Overview Hailed by a two generations of listeners as one of the most important (and overlooked) songwriters of the last 25 years, Arthur Russell’s music remains as contemporary today as when it was first recorded. Over the last four years, Audika Records has diligently mined Russell’s vast archive of previously unreleased music with the critically lauded albums Calling Out of Context, Springfield, World of Echo, and First Thought Best Thought. Now, the label completes the oeuvre, showing Russell’s singer-songwriter side. Love Is Overtaking Me collects the best of the previously unreleased folk, pop, and country stylings from Arthur Russell’s archive. Compiled from over eight hours of material and three years in the making, the album includes some of Russell’s earliest ’70s compositions through to his very last at-home recordings in 1991. Several of these tracks are featured prominently in Matt Wolf ’s film Wild Combination: A Portrait of Arthur Russell, including “Close My Eyes,” “Eli,” The Letter,” and “Love Is Overtaking Me.” The album is compiled from several sources, including the legendary demos made for John Hammond Sr., a demo of a country song written for Randy Travis, and the late ’80s collaboration with Steven Hall recording as Bright & Early. Extensive liner notes from Russell’s longtime companion Tom Lee provide perspective into the intimate nature of Arthur’s process and songwriting.

“Visionary NYC composer and cellist Arthur Russell tied together the strands of classical minimalism, Eastern mysticism, and dreamlike disco pop, leaving behind a legacy of confoundingly beautiful and idiosyncratic recordings.” — Plan B ALSO AVAILABLE

Overview Zak Riles is a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist in the Important band Grails (as well as M. Ward’s band). His creative contributions to the group are immeasurable, and can be heard clearly on this self-titled debut solo outing. In fact, some of the pieces on this record have been reinterpreted into Grails favorites. As in his work with Grails, Riles’ solo work is an elaborate mansion built of inspiration, with so much strength and originality that it stands firmly on its own. On these rocky shores come crashing waves of Sandy Bull, Mogolar, Deuter, Popol Vuh, and the Ventures while Persian breeze drifts by wafting the melodies of Hossein Alizadeh. Essential listening for followers of Important Records who favor the likes of Grails and James Blackshaw.

Press Quotes “Nadja somehow churns out ‘doom metal’ for the post-rock and noise sets … Nadja can be as heavy as the best industrial or doom band you’ve ever heard. Overview Locust is proud to announce the release of Clomeim, the new studio album from New York’s No-Neck Blues Band. Clomeim is an evolution, and a vital document of change in the No-Neck Blues Band’s 15+ years of para-musical activity. This pivotal recording is a creative distillation of the collective at a new and startling saturation point. For three rainy days in March 2007, the seven-headed hydra that is NNCK holed up in Black Dirt Studios, their newly outfitted recording studio in the foothills of upstate New York. With a discipline and a clarity of vision they’ve rarely displayed before, the collective channeled all of their energies into hours of recording live, real-time improvisation. After months spent sculpting and recasting the raw material, Clomeim emerged—a distinct whole, recalling in its parts the communal howl of Algarnas Tradgard, the dead spirit channeling of Geino Yamashiro Gumi, the glacial shadowplay of Heresie-era Univers Zero, and Krautrock zenith Faust at their finest hour. Clomeim is that rare hybrid—a rock exterior with a cryptic, experimental core; a dense groover; and a burning, exploratory psychedelic grimoire for the new dark ages.

Press Quotes “Flynt rethreads the sounds of early rock ’n’ roll—the rude bleat of Big Jay McNeeley’s sax, Chuck Berry’s briar patch guitar riffs, the slapback shuffle of Carl Perkins, and the propulsive piano of Jerry Lewis—and swings it overhead for his own unruly lariat. That an avant-garde thinker created music this glaringly unpretentious and wholly alive in the conceited environs of pre-punk New York is accomplishment enough … one intuits that this is how rock ‘n’ roll felt at the beginning: a sputtering, barely-controllable cyclone of dance floor energy and joyful noise.” — Stop Smiling

Henry Flynt is a seasoned tourist of The World of the Other Ear, and C Tune is his ringing, psychedelic meditation on/from the cosmos. Call it a sonic postcard, or call it late-night head music, or even call it ecstatic minimalism if you have to. On this 47+-minute foray, our man Flynt takes his electrified fiddle and blends droning sonic calisthenics with lonesome swing melodies and high-decibel screech with the somnambulistic playing of his expat mathematician pal Mr/Mrs. C.C. Hennix on Pran Nath Tamboura. Like GBV, they’re chronically catchy, and they have a similarly frayed set of production values, but they don’t leave you with that lingering sense that you’re a sucker and will listen to anything.” — Boston Phoenix “Houseguest is simply the best pop band in the country.” — McSweeney’s “While the abandon of their stage presence is something to behold, what they are capable of committing in the studio is staggeringly beautiful, skewed pop.” — PopMatters “There’s a fine line between sounding intelligent and sounding grating, particularly when lyrics are involved, but Houseguest soft-peddle the jokes and, perhaps more important, the irony. The most obvious precedent is Kurt Wagner’s work in Lambchop—all bemusement and understated intelligence.” — Dusted

Overview Houseguest is an “adventure rock” band from Akron comprised of five awesome cuties who are all Best Friends Forever! People have told them they sound like Big Country crossed with the Minutemen, or Peter Murphy’s solo career crossed with Dire Straits. That probably doesn’t make much sense, but anyway, people seem to like it. And they are pretty funny when they get a few drinks in them. They like to take their shirts off onstage, and sometimes there’s wrestling involved. Oh, and girls really dig them. I know five girls in particular who think these guys are God’s gift to the world of, well, everything. Seriously, you can’t get these broads to shut up about how wonderful and perfect their sons are. Houseguest writes bad-ass songs about bad-ass shit like baseball, oceanography, haunted forests, the migration period, Native Americans, girls that aren’t their moms, and more. All sorts of cool crap. This is their fourth album, titled Welcome, All That’s Difficult. It is very, very good!

Selling Points • Critically acclaimed debut available for the first time on vinyl. Overview LP version of the stunning debut from Portland folk-songwriter duo Horse Feathers! Justin Ringle’s voice fills a room with startling results, carrying a strength that elaborates on the burdens of broken relationships. The album’s stark honesty and open-wound vocal deliveries are as personally effecting as they are orchestrated musically, and for that credit is due to prodigal multi-instrumentalist Peter Broderick, who jumps from instrument to instrument. Influenced by such artists as Nick Drake and Nebraska-era Bruce Springsteen, Horse Feathers evokes the sound of being optimistically broken.
