From PBS News: Latin Music USA is a story about American music—fusions of Latin sounds with jazz, rock, country, rhythm & blues—music with deeper roots and broader reach than most people realize. It’s a fresh take on our musical history, reaching across time and across musical genres to embrace the exciting hybrid sounds of musical fusions that have deeply enriched popular music in the US for over five decades. The multimedia project is anchored by a four-hour documentary series that will premiere in October 2009, during Hispanic Heritage Month, on PBS stations nationwide. Produced by a world-class production team at WGBH and the BBC, Latin Music USA invites the audience into the vibrant musical conversation between Latinos and non-Latinos that has helped shape the history of popular music in the United States. The series features the memorable stories of artists including, among others, salsa greats Willie Colón and Marc Anthony; the Latin-inflected sounds found in sixties rock and roll from The Drifters to Motown to the Rolling Stones; the genius of Texas accordion player Flaco Jiménez; Carlos Santana; Linda Ronstadt; legendary Chicano rock band Los Lobos; megastars Gloria & Emilio Estefan; Ricky Martin and Juanes; Miami rapper Pitbull; Reggaeton performers Daddy Yankee and Tego Calderón; and Lin-Manuel Miranda from the Tony Award winning musical In the Heights. In the spirit and support of this fantastic production, this book features some of Allegro’s top Latin titles on pages 14–22. Stock up now, and ask your account manager for a complete list of Latin-themed titles available through Allegro!

• Classy six-page digipak available for the first time in America! • Includes a brilliant interpretation of Jimi Hendrix’s composition “Cherokee Mist,” never released by Hendrix himself, which was taken from a rehearsal tape made in the studio before he left us. • In Jimi Hendrix’s lifetime his mystique as a supreme improviser and spontaneous, intuitive performer often overshadowed his talents as a songwriter. But as composer/producer Brian Eno has pointed out, “Hendrix was one of the most significant composers of the 20th century, and a far too underappreciated one at that.” • Geri Allen is exceptionally well qualified to challenge the thorny problem of translating rock music played by a fiery lead guitar, bass, and drums into a new music played entirely by three pianos. Allen combines advanced academic methods of technical training with the instrumental ability to realize her musical ideas. She has integrated numerous musical influences and has established an original, many-faceted eclecticism as her style. A superb pianist, she has virtually unlimited capabilities as an improviser in all styles. • Appeals to Hendrix fans as well as lovers of jazz and contemporary music. New Releases

The debut release from a fantastic Korean-born singer & performer features world-famous Swedish artists Ulf Wakenius and Lars Danielsson. • The debut jazz album from the first Korean artist exclusively under contract with ACT! • In 2007, Youn Sun Nah recorded a pop album in Korea entitled Memory Lane. The CD was a best seller in her home country and she was invited to perform across Europe, where she met Swedish guitar virtuoso and ACT recording artist Ulf Wakenius. They decided to record a CD, bringing in producer/bassist Lars Danielsson, Norwegian trumpet player Mathias Eick, and French percussionist Xavier Desandre-Navarre. • This exquisite quartet displays a distinctly Nordic element on Voyage. As Youn Sun Nah’s singing brings together various elements, the repertoire on the album concentrates on diverse predilections including six of her own compositions that range from melancholic ballads to intricate up-tempo tracks. • Features Egberto Gismonti’s “Frevo” as a showpiece for Wakenius; Nat King Cole’s “Calypso Blues,” recommended to Nah by a French friend; and an ethereal version of Tom Waits’ “Jockey Full of Bourbon.” • Received a Korean Music Award. Voyage was named Record of the Month by French publication Jazzman.

Her technique is astonishing, her pitch fantastic. Her very particular timbre makes comparisons difficult. Some jazz fans recognize Jeanne Lee or Susanne Abbuehl, pop fans Björk or Kate Bush, but trust me, Youn Sun Nah is a unique phenomenon.” — 6 Moons Key Markets: New York, Washington DC, San Francisco, Seattle, Boston, Chicago

What a way to go out—roaring, full of life, full of fun, full of music—with a rhythm section he loved in the town where he shaped his career. ‘We haven’t lived in Los Angeles in years,’ he told the Jazz Bakery audience in January 2009, ‘and it’s really good to be home.’” — Doug Ramsey “A charter member of the ‘West Coast’ jazz movement, Shank’s cool but always strongly swinging sound has made him one of a handful of saxophone players with an instantly recognizable and always exciting sound. Bud Shank has more than earned his status as a legend.” — All About Jazz “An alto saxophonist and flutist who helped propel cool-school West Coast jazz to prominence in the 1950s and fostered the melding of American and Brazilian music that created the bossa nova … a versatile player, both as a sideman and bandleader, in a wide variety of musical arenas, from big band swing to symphonic to pop, with a wide variety of collaborators.” — New York Times “Shank’s sound, somewhere between Phil Woods and Lee Konitz, has added so much grit since his early days on the sound stages of Los Angeles.” — JazzTimes Key Markets: Tucson (hometown), Los Angeles, New York, Chicago

New releases

The first live CD release of two living legends playing together! • Hailed as one of the most powerful vocalists and greatest bassists of his time, Jack Bruce’s improvisational skill and unique, free-spirited approach to composition and performance forever changed electric music. His pioneering, full-toned, freewheeling playing on the electric bass revolutionized the way the instrument is used and influenced the playing of countless bassists today, including Sting and Jaco Pastorius. • Bruce’s work with bands such as Cream and the Tony Williams Lifetime, as well as his solo material, unlocked the doors to the pent-up energy of a new approach to the art of sound, breaking the barriers of tradition and creating a kind of music that had never been heard. • Robin Trower, whose career has spanned more than four decades, is one of the finest guitarists in rock history. Throughout his long and winding solo career, he has been called the “White” Hendrix due to his uncanny ability to channel Hendrix’s bluesy/psychedelic, Fender Strat-fueled playing style. • Trower spent the early ’60s playing guitar in various London-based outfits, and received his big break 1967 when he joined Procol Harum. After leaving the band five years later, Trower embarked on his solo career and found the success that has made him a legend today, armed with a fluid and powerful guitar style. • Drummer Gary Husband has a rich pedigree, working with Level 42, Gary Moore, and John Mclaughlin. • Service to national press and radio, as well as late night talk shows. • Ads with Blues Revue and various guitar-focused magazines. • Tour dates on page 39. The duo sounds as if ready to break out, rather than the legendary veterans of more than four decades in the business. Long-time jazz and rock session drummer Gary Husband completes the trio for these live-in-studio sessions, which showcase the genius of Bruce and Trower equally and collaboratively.” — Amazon Editorial Review “A commanding, evocative soloist with a substantial stylistic debt to Jimi Hendrix, Trower … made several powerful blues-infected rock albums.” — Entertainment Weekly Key Markets: New York, Boston, Washington DC, San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago

New Releases • A classic, this record is Jerry Garcia’s first non-Grateful Dead work! • Special digipak reissue never available before in America features stunning art by Mati Klarwein. • Hooteroll? shows early-era Dead influence, yet incorporates the years of experience accrued by Garcia. Some very unique music is created in this session, and lets the listener see how Garcia could branch out to do something different—more experimental, more off-the-cuff, and more spontaneous. • Using a seven-piece band and implementing organs, sax, trumpet, guitars, bass, and drums, kaleidoscopic musical waves and journeys combine to make a very diverse and jam-filled record. Howard Wales: organ, piano Jerry Garcia: guitar John Kahn: bass Curly Cook: rhythm guitar Bill Vitt, Michael Marinelli: drums Ken Balzall: trumpet Martin Fierro: saxophone, flute Track Listing: Morning in Marin • Da Bird Song • South Side Strut • Up from the Desert • DC-502 • One A.M. The Last Poets Made In Amerikkka

Never released on CD, this is original music from the 1979 motion picture Sunnyside—except the track “Together,” which is previously unreleased. Luther Vandross provides lead vocals on several tracks. A true soul-disco-funk gem!

This DVD marks the reunion of The Last Poets, accompanied by veritable musical legends like Ronald Shannon Jackson, Jamaladeen Tacuma, Robert Irving III, and Kenyatte Abdur-Rahman. Nearly 40 years after their separation, the members of this legendary group—the founding fathers of today’s hip-hop, rap, and slam—came together in Paris for a one-time concert at the 2008 Banlieues Blues Festival.

Insightful, poetic lyrics coupled with genre-bending acoustic accompaniment! • D.C. Anderson is a regular schlub with the same problems that everyone has—rent’s due, eats too much fast food, pays too many taxes, and wonders who in their right mind would program an automated voice to say, “I’m sorry but I don’t understand you” and think he wouldn’t yell into the phone, “THAT’S BECAUSE YOU’RE A COMPUTER”—but he doesn’t write songs about all that. He writes about everything ELSE. • Stuff happens in Anderson’s world. Then he thinks about it. Then he writes a song. Like when a friend told him that email is no place for real feelings. Like when he was on a cross-country tour and looked out the window and saw nature tending to all sorts of things in spite of man’s attempts to do it himself. Like when another friend attempted to pass lunacy off as reality. Like when something breaks and you have to pick up the pieces and the pieces just don’t fit back the same... • This album features no electric ANYTHING. • Currently starring in the national tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Broadway smash hit Phantom. • In-depth mailing to radio outlets and major dailies in top 15 markets. D.C. Anderson: vocals Geoff Packard: guitar, vocals Ritt Henn: bass, vocals Deanna Witkowski: piano, vocals David Robison: piano Suzy Perelman: violin • Joe’s Ok • From A Porch Swing • I’m Right • Long Past Blue • God Has Taken Care • One Last Surprise • First To Go • God’s Will • What’s Happened Since • Going, Going, Gone • This Crying • Hope • Miracle “D.C. Anderson has a voice that seems adaptable to every purpose. He has affection for songs filled with offbeat humor and rich irony. Anderson can sing a standard such as ‘Second Time Around’ with storytelling mastery, and he can deliver new material with the sort of musical understanding that is a delight.” — Don Heckman “Live and lively! The ideal soundtrack for chillout and progressive ambiance from the “Voice of Tibet.” • Tara means “The Liberator” and Devi means “Goddess.” Tara Devi is considered one of the most powerful and protective female goddesses in Buddhism, and many people worship her. She is the eldest daughter of a Tibetan Lama, the Venerable Dagsay Tulku. With her beautiful voice and traditional training, her music brings the spirit of Tibetan Buddhism to the western world. • Has performed regularly with his Holiness the Dalai Lama. • Perfect for chanting, devotional practices, yoga, and meditation. Tara Devi is a musically vibrant message of inner peace, universal love, and timeless Dharma wisdom accessible to all, despite religious orientations. This CD is a perfect accompaniment to meditation practices, chanting, and inner work.” — Honey Harris, KBAC Radio “Seldom do I hear singing and music so suffused with gentle beauty and calmness as I did on Compassion. Tibetan vocalist Dechen Shak-Dagsay’s songs and mantras, impeccably accompanied by flute, piano, Tibetan bowls, tambura, and subtle synthesizer textures, wrap around you like a soft blanket, comforting and imbuing you with a sense of inner peace and serenity.
