Lost in the Stars
A masterful and innovative force in classical music, Dennis Russell Davies is considered among today’s most inventive conductors at the forefront of the orchestral, chamber, and operatic worlds. A modern, articulate, and versatile artist revered for his command of both traditional and contemporary music, Davies is also recognized as an accomplished pianist and an acclaimed collaborator.
Originally written for Broadway, Lost in the Stars is an important work of music theatre—a composition of great depth, deceptively couched in simple settings. The drama has lost none of its desperate urgency in passing years, and the recording sessions for this disc were somewhat akin to a religious experience for all involved.

Danish composer Hans Abrahamsen was born in Copenhagen in 1952, and studied music theory at the Royal Danish Academy of Music. His music is inspired by his mentors Per Norgard and Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen, who were two of his composition teachers. On Schnee, he says: “In the beginning of the ’90s, I arranged some of J.S. Bach’s canons for ensemble—in total seven single standing works from his entire lifespan. I became totally absorbed this music and arranged them with the intention of the music being repeated many, many times, as a kind of minimal music. Obviously, I didn’t know which durations Bach had in mind, but by listening to his canons in this way, a profound new moving world of circular time was opened to me. Schnee, consisting of canon 1 and 2, will form part of the complete work that will consist of a number of canons written for various line-ups within the Ensemble Recherche.”

This multicultural haven gave us troubadour lyrics, canto hondo, flamenco, and the guitar—fashioned by the great Arab musician Ziryab, who added a fifth string to the lute. The critical innovation in song was the strophic (verse-form) song with refrain: the muwashshah written in classical Arabic and the zajal written in Andalusian dialect of Arabic. The texts are reproduced with translations in Arabic, Hebrew, and Spanish in the booklet.

When de Falla wrote “The Three-Cornered Hat” in 1916–1919 (after a story by Pedro Antonio de Alarcón), he was already a well-known composer. The first version, developed as a Pantomime, Diaghilev saw in Madrid and then commissioned de Falla to develop his score into a ballet. The ballet was first performed in 1919 in London, conducted by Ernest Ansermet with set designs and costumes by Pablo Picasso. The final score was a marvelous work, one of de Falla’s most beautiful, and it is presented here in its entirety. Prokofiev’s “Chout” received its first performance in Paris 1921, where it was well received. The score, calling for a large orchestra, is richly melodic and has a typical Russian folkloric quality as well as the burlesque elements that would appear in many of Prokofiev’s most famous works. 5% PREORDER DISCOUNT

The three Christmas cantatas brought together here seem to belong to the same period, notably the first months after J.S. Bach’s assumption of his new duties as Cantor of the Thomaskirche in Leipzig. “Christum wir sollen loben schon” and “Sehet, welch’ ein Liebe” were composed for the second and the third days of Christmas in 1723 respectively, while “Ich freue mich” was composed for third day of Christmas in 1724. This third cantata is stylistically the latest of the three and is clearly separate from the first two, although the three cantatas nevertheless have one thing in common: all three make use of the cornet and the trombone, instruments that Bach rarely employed in his cantatas.

In this brief time span, however, seven books of tablatures were composed and published that, in their excellent artistic quality, place music for the vihuela at the peak of Renaissance musical production. On this CD, ancient guitar music specialist Massimo Lonardi performs this interesting, rare repertory. The result is an exhaustive and fascinating overview of this intriguing music.

GESUALDO: Madrigali Libro VI
The Kassiopeia Quintet has fulfilled an almost impossible task. The ensemble recorded all six books—128 five voice madrigals—by the notorious prince Don Carlo Gesualdo (1566–1613)! Now it’s time for the cycle to be completed, with brand new recordings of books 5 and 6. The only complete recordings on the market!
The Kassiopeia Quintet worked together intensively with masters like Gabriel Garrido and John Potter to come to an interpretation that shows transparency and colors. It’s a challenge not to be taken away by the unbelievable harmonic twists and turns, but to show what the function of each detail is in the whole of the madrigal.

TORRI: Le martyre des Maccabées (complete oratorio)
REGIS: 2 Masses • Motets • 2 Chansons
The Martyrdom of the Maccabees is the birth certificate of French oratorio. Inspired by one of the darkest episodes from the Old Testament, it tackles the question of religious fanatacism through a tragic and moving plot.
Two masses, a handful of motets, and two chansons are all that remains of the oeuvre of a composer regarded by the theorist Johannes Tictoris as one of the most important of his generation. The Clerks’ Group’s expertise in the 15th-century repertoire has received many accolades. Here, the group once again displays its exceptional competence in the service of the outstanding works by one of the period’s most original composers.

In 1934–35 Claudia Muzio recorded a number of arias and songs for the Italian Columbia company. Columbia wouldn’t put up the money, so Lauri Volpi and others did. Although the recordings were made when she was in declining health and past her vocal prime, they came to be regarded as uniquely expressive. Her posthumous reputation rests almost entirely on them, but owing to the record industry’s woes they have become scarce. Here, they are presented in their entirety. Don Licinio Refice, who conducts the four selections written by him, composed Cecilia for Muzio, who sang the world premiere in Rome in 1934.
