Overview
In the late 1960s, a number of Peruvian guitarists from Lima and the Amazon created a new electric hybrid that mixed cumbia with surf, Cuban guaracha, rock, Peruvian folklore, and psychedelic touches. This new wave of Peruvian cumbia came to be known as chicha. Scorned by the middle-class and the official tastemakers, chicha remained mostly associated with the slums of Lima, where the ever-growing population of Andean migrants embraced the music. Three years ago Barbès released the first volume of The Roots of Chicha, which created converts worldwide—from Franz Ferdinand and Elijah Wood to the New York Times, NPR, Pitchfork, The BBC, and El Comercio. The second volume in the series showcases 11 more bands, with 16 tracks recorded between 1968 and 1981. This album is not exactly a sequel; it’s more an attempt to rectify some of the biases and inaccuracies of the first volume by incorporating some lesser-known bands. This is cumbia at its best—music at once familiar and exotic, rooted in the changing sounds fostered by the worldwide musical revolution that took place in the late ’60s but still remaining oddly timeless.

For this follow-up to 2009’s Colorfield, guitarist Joe Morris brings together Katt Hernandez, Junko Fujiwara Simons, and his longtime collaborator Luther Grey for a dense textural landscape of sliding strings, ripping guitar, and pointillist percussion. Morris explains, “The title comes from a connection I feel to the assembly of tones in film and photography … there is an attraction to the sense of time stopping and to the vagaries of tones in images that are of an ‘instant’ … As improvising musicians we function somewhat like a camera, displaying the moment in sound.”

This 1967 recording by the avant-garde saxophonist—his second for ESP-Disk’—features Tyler on alto sax with accompaniment from David Baker (cello), Brent McKesson (bass), and Kent Brinkley (bass). The album starts out with “Cha-Lacy’s Out East,” which revisits a theme from his first album as leader. The proceedings are heady free-form avant-jazz, reaching into cosmic realms with string-heavy backing providing soaring atmospheres. Tyler cut legendary records as a sideman to Albert Ayler, but as a leader he proves to be one of the most advanced, challenging, and exploratory players of the late ’60s avant-garde.

Overview
The sons of Uterus and Fire spit kerosene on the paper cities of America, eat holes through mirrors, and bury the hatchet deep in the heart of the Great Machine. The Force is strong with this one. Join us, you have nothing to lose but the noose around your neck. Twenty-three tracks of train wrecks and crocodile piss, recorded by Diana Arens at Dub Narcotic in Olympia, Washington. Out of print since 1997, Songbook Vol. I is presented here on CD in digipak format, mastered for the first time.
Press Quotes
“Every fifteen seconds in America, Mississippi Delta and hill country blues are co-opted, mimicked, or re-invented by a bunch of white people with thrift-store guitars. Mercifully, Old Time Relijun, Olympia’s mostly-bearded noise-blues quartet, have dismantled the form so thoroughly and recklessly that they’ve become less an homage than a passing nod. Their records may steal bits and pieces from classic American idioms, but their clamor is all their own.” — Pitchfork “Arrington de Dionyso is that type of front man who stirs your loins. He possesses a demonic delivery that makes me go a little weak in the knees.” — Tiny Mix Tapes

Imagine you are a guitar player, and you have amassed a collection of 40+ pedals. You have octave pedals, phase shifters, delays, phrase samplers, synthesizers, and even the classic wah wah pedal. What might you do with this armada of electronics? You might want a bass groove so you write a line on your guitar, drop it down an octave, sample it, loop it, and send it out for the drummer. You might want to vamp over that so you have some rhythm guitar. After you’ve built the rhythmic foundation, you might noodle, you might shred, you might drop another loop, or you might feedback. And this is Matta Gawa: cinematic chunks of post-hardcore improvised sound. As “ba” is an ancient Egyptian word for spirit, let’s just call Matta Gawa’s “ba” soul music.

Uncle Joe’s Spirit House is a very special project that William Parker produced for his own Centering Records imprint to honor his Uncle Joe and Aunt Lee, who are both in their early 90s and going strong, living in the Bronx enjoying their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. They will celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary in 2010. This is an organ quartet recording date that hearkens back to mid-’60s Blue Note soul jazz, made fresh by Parker’s original compositions and the contributions of the impeccable musicians involved: Cooper-Moore on organ, Darryl Foster on tenor sax, and Gerald Cleaver on drums.

Overview
Mike Pride’s From Bacteria To Boys features four of the most startling and beautiful new voices in modern jazz, blurring the lines between forward-looking groove-based modern jazz, chant works, R&B, and 20th /21st century classical music with a singular intensity and center of focus. This is avant-garde soul music—the credo of AUM Fidelity—and the label is very proud to present this major work. Betweenwhile is the flagship document of what these four musicians, led by drummer/composer Pride, have summoned and made animate over a highly concentrated period of tireless live performance and group refinement. Its title, semi-quoted from a line in the expository intermediary Chapter 12.5 of R. Kelly’s Trapped in the Closet epic, alludes to the many-layered accruement between human beings operating together and towards collective goals in time/space.

RIYL: Los Lobos, Cannibal & The Headhunters, The Premiers, Don & Dewey. Vinyl issue is an exact reproduction of the rare 1962 live Linda Records LP. Recorded live at the Rainbow Gardens by a young Wally Heider. Band is introduced by The Newlywed Game host Bob Eubanks. 180-gram vinyl limited to 1,000 copies includes a download certificate for the extra tracks from the CD. CD also includes all six singles (A and B sides) from The Complete Mixtures. Publicist will be engaged to service radio & other media.
Overview
It all happened at the Rainbow Gardens in 1960s Pomona as The Mixtures, mighty kings of the West Coast’s Eastside dance hall scene, rocked and ruled the house. As the movement for integration that began in Mississippi and Alabama was taking shape nationwide, it was not only the South that was segregated. In the Southern California of the ’50s, non-white races were more allied, though it was rare you’d find them mixed in a band. As the dawn broke on rock ‘n’ roll, this six-man party band—at different times comprised of African-Americans, Hispanics, Asians, Caucasians, and a Native American—made history.

Overview
Great Lakes formed in Athens, Georgia in 1996. Founded around the songwriting partnership of Ben Crum and lyricist Dan Donahue with multi-instrumentalist Jamey Huggins, they released an eponymous debut in 2000. Over time, Huggins switched his focus to other projects, and Crum and Donahue relocated to Brooklyn, releasing The Distance Between in 2002 and Diamond Times in 2006. In 2009, Donahue moved back to Athens, leaving Crum to carry on in New York. 2010’s Ways of Escape is the first Great Lakes record to feature Crum as the primary songwriter. With its frank and personal folk- and country-influenced songs, the record has a bare emotional style that’s far from the innocent optimism and lighthearted psychedelia of the band’s early records.

Callers’ first collection of songs written and recorded in New York started with the idea of covering Wire’s “Heartbeat.” The goal was to create something simple yet cathartic—soulful and true to the sound of the busted gear you’d find in a Midwest high school gospel choir performance, and the breathtaking result brims with the feeling of R&B, the melodies of pop, and the structures found in jazz and post-punk while employing the suspense of space and unexpected resolutions.

Overview
J. Tillman’s seventh full-length record was recorded in three days, February 2010, by Steve Albini at Electrical Audio in Chicago. Bob Weston mastered the album. Very few of the songs feature accompaniment, though a few include mellotron and drum machine (“Three Sisters”), and there is something of a drum explosion at the conclusion of “A Seat at the Table.” The lyrics are predominately third-person narratives, save for a few stock-in-trade existential musings.

Overview
Traveling in a tripped-out converted school bus, The Growlers have crisscrossed the country with their unique blend of woozy, reverb-drenched gypsy surf. With a live show that falls somewhere between carnival sideshow and psychedelic beach party, the rambunctious California sextet has made a name for itself touring with Dr. Dog, Devendra Banhart, Julian Casablancas, Nobunny, and Vampire Weekend. They have appeared on Fuel TV’s The Daily Habit, and were noted by the LA Times as a Band To Watch. But we think Los Angeles radio powerhouse KROQ stated it best: “The Growlers will rule the universe!” We agree.

Overview
Classical viola major Dina Maccabee is the go-to string player for all kinds of creative and popular musicians in the San Francisco Bay Area. Free-jazz guitarist Tobin Summerfield is a staple of Chicago’s indie-rock and free-form jazz movements. The two often joked about the pop record they would make someday, and now that day has arrived in the form of nine timeless tracks that intertwine disparate influences and musical nuance with a contemporary stylishness, intelligent lyrics, and a direct, unaffected singing style.

Overview
Here it is. The fifth full-length by Austin’s Sunset. This is the culmination of the past two years worth of LPs by the prolific Bill Baird. As noted by Ned Raggett of All Music Guide, Sunset’s music is “somehow perfectly suited for a time when fidelity itself can range from Surround Sound 5.1 precision to the tinniest of MP3 bit rates.” A perfect blend of lo-fi aesthetics and heavy hi-fidelity pop, with a high integrity of songwriting, Sunset’s Loveshines But The Moon Is Shining Too is a densely layered and gorgeous work of brooding pop-folk beauty that rewards multiple listens.
Press Quotes
“Austin’s Sunset recently sent over their latest timeless pop gem, the gorgeous ‘Late Night Dawning.’ The sweeping, elegiac duet—which was written and arranged by Bill Baird, and features vocals from the lovely Crystal Fulbright and the elusive Red Hunter—is a much-welcomed next step for the band, and will appear on Sunset’s as-yet-untitled new LP.” — Gorilla vs. Bear

In a dark room, through a haze induced by fog machines, an infectious sound floods your brain-space, a driving synth rock voyage guided by a female voice that commands attention in its come-hither breathiness. This transcendent experience is called Reporter, and now, the songs that have set countless dance floors ablaze have been laid to tape in top form. The band is certainly conscious of the past, employing their vast personal collection of ’70s/’80s equipment to create a sound influenced by Italo Disco and French House of previous decades. Simultaneously, though, they are obsessed with the future—the possibility of rising above the blasé indie rock aesthetic and onto a grand planet of light, movement, and pure energy, where a rock band can be an ecstatic phenomenon.

It’s a typical indie rock story: band starts label to release its own records, label starts releasing records by others, band gets distracted by the reality of running its own business and before you know it, years have gone by. Salteens founded Vancouver’s Boompa Records in 2003, but up until this year’s EP Moths, they had remained relatively silent (there was, of course, the group’s appearance on Yo Gabba Gabba to tide us over, but that was aimed squarely at the toddler set rather than those who’d grown up with Salteens on their mix-tapes and college radios). A lot happens in seven years, and change comes in waves. Salteens’ indie-pop heart is still in place but this time around, Walker has put down his guitar in favor of a conductor’s baton, and is decked out in Fillipa K suits instead of ironic t-shirts. Built upon meticulous arrangements, the exuberant horns and harmonies confirm a new songwriting maturity; the music of Grey Eyes is truly the fulfillment of the Salteens’ early promise. And, it’s been worth the wait.

Here to invigorate the now stagnant modern folk scene, El Boy Die unearths an organic psychedelia both ancient and new with his second full-length album. The minstrel vagabond from France re-imagines sonic archetypes into a cinematic soundscape, drawing from medieval ambience, angelic harmonies, and ethereal instrumentation that billows forth a shadowy cloud of arcane beauty. Simultaneously eerie and comforting, mysterious and whimsical, El Boy Die defies predictability with potentiality.

After the release of their first 7” single in 2006, Pas Chic Chic quickly gained a reputation as one of Canada’s brightest new acts. Debut album Au Contraire was released in Canada on the 50th anniversary of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, created for the purpose of experimenting with electronics to create new forms of music. Pas Chic Chic continues the legacy where the BBC left off with their latest offering in the form of a two-song, 12” EP. The eight-minute “Allez vous faire influencer” and its motorik rhythm is a gracious nod to Neu!, while the 16-minute epic “Premier Souffle” explores the confines of electronic rock, building on the legacy of 1970s underground German and French artists such as Harmonia, Tangerine Dream, Kraftwerk, Heldon, and Lard Free. This is pop music with one foot in the past and the other way in the distant future.

Overview
Agent Ribbons is a Sacramento trio whose music has been described as “Victorian punk” or “The White Stripes lost in Alice’s Wonderland.” With an old-timey aesthetic that is nonetheless thoroughly modern, they miraculously reconcile seemingly unrelated genres, sounding something like Girls in the Garage doing the Three Penny Opera. And with almost constant touring since 2007, the band has cemented a deeply devoted fan base across the US and Europe. Agent Ribbons’ forthcoming album, Chateau Crone, is a tremendous step forward. With delicate violin arrangements, noisy dissonant tangents, Spector-esque vocal harmonies, and clever melodic phrasing, the album cannot commit to a genre but always manages to sound like the same brand of baroque pop. Each copy of Chateau Crone comes with a 24-page full color booklet as well as a temporay tattoo for aspiring Chateau Cronies.

“Sounding not unlike the wide-eyed retro-pop of Glasgow’s Camera Obscura or even the mournful folk of Zach Condon’s Beirut, there’s a definite sense of throwback about this pair of wayward Judy Garlands, and you could easily picture them soundtracking a golden summer’s day in 1940s America. With an innate sense of the theatrical, Agent Ribbons’ vintage serenades, with lyrics about old circuses and nickels and dimes, are a rare case of the old outshining the new.” — Metro.co.uk

• RIYL: Danny Elfman, They Might Be Giants. • Contains two songs from the Cartoon Network show The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, heard on-air by millions of people in a dozen countries. • Contains five songs from AdventureQuest Worlds, a popular online role-playing game where Voltaire (in animated form) is a recurring character. AQ Worlds boasts over 35 million unique subscribers worldwide. • Contains “When You’re Evil,” Voltaire’s best selling song that also serves as the soundtrack for the popular viral DEADY mini-game on the internet. • Includes a never-before-heard Twilight parody version of Voltaire’s popular “The Vampire Club.” • Tours extensively in North America, including anime, sci-fi/fantasy, and horror conventions. • Mailing to press, radio, and blogs.
Overview
Just in time for Halloween! With his devilish goatee, turn of the century garb, and rakish looks, one might assume Voltaire sings murder ballads on the Bowery—and to a fair degree one would be right. However, those people who don’t wear black on a daily basis know Voltaire as the Evil Meteor Creature on Cartoon Network’s The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy. If you’ve ever seen the episode where a tentacled, extraterrestrial rock tries to convince Billy to bring him the townsfolk so he can eat their “BRAINS!” then you’ve already heard one of Voltaire’s songs, and he also sings “Land of the Dead,” the title track of the Billy and Mandy one-hour film Big Boogie Adventure.
Now, all of Voltaire’s age-appropriate songs are available on one CD! This collection is sure to please fans and non-fans of Twilight—especially the never-before-heard version of his popular song “The Vampire Club,” in which Voltaire simultaneously embraces and skewers Twilight in the way that only he can. Recommended for tweens ages 12 and up, this collection contains fantasy violence, references to monsters, and liberal use of the word “hell.”

No stranger to animation, Voltaire is also a recurring character in the popular online game AdventureQuest Worlds. Every Friday the 13th, Voltaire leads players (a server-crashing average of 35,000 at a time) on a live adventure in which he sings his songs with lyrics changed to match the monster-infested battles in the game. Voltaire says, “I have fans who now have kids, and they tell me that their kids love my songs, but they have to skip over the ones that are not appropriate for the wee ones. Also, through my work with Cartoon Network and AdventureQuest I have a growing horde of 12-year-old fans, so I really felt it was time to make a record that was right for them.”

Overview
Jack Dangers, the mastermind behind Meat Beat Manifesto, has already established his reputation as a legendary figure in electronic music. With classic albums such as Storm the Studio, Armed Audio Warfare, Satyricon, In Dub, and 2008’s Autoimmune, MBM has never stopped evolving and influencing the musical landscape. Over the course of its existence, MBM has been labeled industrial, techno, breakbeat, IDM, acid house, drum n’ bass, dubstep, and more. No label seems to stick, as the music evolves with every release. With the new album, Answers Come In Dreams, Mr. Dangers once again expands on the Meat Beat Manifesto sound. Hypnotically beautiful, the album pulses with life.

Overview
Watchmen, the five-man group composed of South Florida natives, has 20 years of combined experience in the hip-hop industry. Wu symbolism is found throughout this album, to any Wu fan’s pleasure: the group name (not coincidentally) starts with a W, 18 tracks on each disc give us 36 chambers to explore, kung fu samples are rife throughout, there is a Wu-Mama intro on disc two, and of course, Wu and Killa Bee references all over. Official approval is given by Cappadonna himself on the first track. BlackMask, The Cipher, 7th 7ign, PRO, and Prox are focused on superstardom and ready to show the world that South Florida is a breeding ground for raw talent!

Heimataerde burst onto the dark electro scene with the club-smashing single Ich Hab die Nacht Getraeumet and the debut album Gotteskrieger. With its sinister blend of massive electro and unusual instruments like bagpipes and cymbals, Heimataerde garnered attention from fans and reviewers alike. At a loss for a fitting description of Heimataerde’s music, the press invented the term “medieval-electro.” Ashlar von Megalon is the narrator that leads us through this hellish scenario, having assigned himself the role of eternal wanderer on a quest for answers and a hidden truth. The new album, Unwesen, will raise a dark world of the forgotten avenger, following the trail of suppressed guilt and half-forgotten crimes rising to the surface with a vengeance. Unwesen is a further step of musical development for Heimataerde, expanding the atmosphere of its self-created genre.

Overview
This Brings Us To, Volumes I & II are the result of an eight-year gestation period during which Threadgill and his band Zooid have fine-tuned his unique system of improvisation in a group setting. The compositions provide the construct for open dialogue within the group while encouraging the musicians to seek a new way to improvise, away from a reliance on chords or scales or any of the timeworn clichés of certain “free” jazz. In the music, Threadgill creates structures in his compositions that provide platforms for the musicians to interact in a way that is constantly challenging, and allows for personal exploration. Despite its intricacy, his music always maintains a grooving, funky vibe, one of the reasons why Threadgill has remained one of the most popular of the cutting-edge jazz musicians of the last 40 years.

Named after a rare TV comedy skit reference, King of Spain is Matt Slate, former guitarist for ’90s emo darlings Pohgoh and The Maccabees (both out of Tampa). After a five-year hiatus from music, in 2006 Slate decided to take matters into his own hands and purchased a Zoom MRS-1680 self-contained studio. What was originally intended as lo-fi handouts for friends slowly began to evolve into Entropy, Slate’s solo debut for New Granada Records. With its warm combination of layered vocals, guitar effects, loops, household items as percussion, and other subtle (and not so subtle) nuances, Entropy is a pensive yet eclectic collection of songs.
Press Quotes
“Entropy is an artful collection of intricately crafted electro-folk songs, built with pulsating guitars, strange ambient sounds and looped vocal parts that showcase Slate’s distinctively raspy voice.” — NPR

In 2004, Heath Dupras stepped from behind the drums of The Washdown (Lookout! Records) to front his own band with ex-Pohgoh drummer Keith Ulrey. The two originally envisioned the project as a guitar-and-drums duo, but the layered, dynamic nature of the material quickly revealed a need to bring others into the fold. Enter longtime friends and fellow ex-Washdown band mates Michael Waksman (guitar, vocals) and Bryan Bates (bass). With the lineup complete, the goal of the band became apparent … to make music on its own terms and at its own pace. Drawing influences from such mid-’90s indie-rock acts as Versus, Seam, Polvo and Codeine, Zillionaire took their time (a year and a half to be exact) on this well-crafted debut.
Press Quotes

Meet Your New Love features 10 songs of intimate, give-and-take vocals—Garrett’s immediate, John’s hushed. The album is a study of layered guitar work and pensive melodies ranging in influence from Fleet Foxes and Beach House to Washed Out and The Smiths.
PRESS QUOTES
“Garrett Klahn has perfect vocal delivery throughout the entire album, as you can hear the raw emotion in every song … His vocals are flawed, but the fact that they are flawed is what makes them great.” — Absolute Punk “Mellow, acoustic, and very satisfying.” — A Week at the Most blog

Crabe is a raw, lo-fi guitar/drum duo that has little in common with the pile of duo-based rockers consisting of Williamsburg hipsters, nerdy punks, and color coordinated bluesmen. These country bumpkins deliver the young, loud, snotty punk rock that will instantly bring vintage Electric Eels and Crime to mind alongside the insanity of Fantomas, John Zorn’s Naked City, and the Melvins. Their real signature, however, is wrapping up the whole juggernaut in glorious noise, sonic vertigo, stopon-a-dime time signatures, and squealing glee that will blindside and pummel. And despite the song titles being en francais, the band sings the majority of the album in their adopted (and slightly garbled) tongue of English.
