Lars Vogt: piano LISZT: Piano Sonata in B minor • SCHUMANN: Fantasy in C, Op. 17 “Modern pianism at full throttle.” — New York Times (performance review) “Fascinating and gutsy … the pianist’s unorthodox phrasing, never mannered or willful, made Grieg sound consistently fresh.” — Los Angeles Times (performance review) Robert Schumann’s Fantasy in C major & Franz Liszt’s Sonata in B flat minor: two singular musical creations, virtually unrivalled in the piano literature, by two very different composers who nevertheless dedicated the two works to each other. The link between the 200th anniversaries of their births, in 2010 und 2011 respectively, is only a superficial framework for the much closer connections that were key to the decision to make this new recording. A pianist of Lars Vogt’s caliber, with his emphatic and transparent style of playing, reveals the composers’ multi-faceted emotional lives, explaining the works without making a meal of the task and leading the listener through the unique heights and depths of Romantic style.

Audiomax BeethovenQuartett BEETHOVEN: String Quartet, Op. 135 • SCHUMANN: String Quartets, Op. 41, Nos. 1 & 2 (first version) Four measures on this new recording will strike string quartet fans as odd. It was with these measures that Schumann, in June 1842, linked the quartets known today as his Opus 41, Nos. 1 and 2, in the version originally intended to form one single immense work of almost Beethovian dimensions. The effect of this originally intended version of the Quartets Op. 41 is enormous—one can hear connections between the two individual quartets, and their symmetrical design is astonishing. A well-known work by Schumann becomes an entirely new experience through the addition of only four measures!

During the first quarter of the 18th century, Bononcini’s cantatas represented the principal trend of this genre. In these works, a fluent and effective technique is combined with a real gift for the composition of melodies. These lamenti are the central element of Bononcini’s dramatic works; his genius is perfectly adapted to tender and pathetic emotions. Another important aspect of his music is the magnificent use of the text. In 1789, Charles Burney called Bononcini “the most prolific cantatas composer” and claimed that Bononcini’s recitatives were universally perceived as the best of their time. Now, Cyril Auvity and his ensemble L’Yriade offer an enthusiastic and totally committed interpretation of some of Bononcini’s cantatas, revealing the extreme force of those magical works.

Dmitry Badiarov: cello J.S. BACH: Cellos Suites Nos. 1–6, BWV 1007–1012 This recording suggests a fascinating and convincing interpretation of the Bach’s Cello Suites on violoncello da spalla by one of the leading figures in the reconstruction of this instrument, and one of its most promising players! For which instrument did Bach actually write his six suites for unaccompanied violoncello? Pictures, writings, and surviving instruments show that early violoncellos were made in different sizes, ranging from the size of a large viola to the modern full-sized cello. Bach possessed several violoncello piccolos, with both four and five strings, made by Johann Christian Hoffmann. Historical evidence suggests that the appropriate type of violoncello for Bach’s suites is that made by Hoffmann, and that, when played on the arm like a violin, the number of unavoidable shifts is no more than average for baroque music.

From Brahms to Fauré, from Saint-Saëns and Lalo to Borodin, nobody could escape from his emotional power or his formal model. Of Schumann’s works for piano & strings, posterity seems to have operated a firm rating: the Quintet is at the top, followed by the Trios and the Quartet. If we follow this logic, the Quintet for Piano & Strings would be one of the summits of the chamber music repertoire. Its little brother, the Quartet for Piano & Strings, would be a lesser replica. In this, we think that history’s judgment should be open to question!

Release Date: October 12, 2010 Nicolau de Figueiredo: harpsichord J.C. BACH: Sonata in C minor, Op. 17, No. 2 • Sonata in G, Op. 5, No. 3 • Sonata in B-flat, Op. 17, No. 6 • Sonata in D, Op. 5, No. 2 • Sonata in E, Op. 5, No. 5 After several successful recordings of harpsichord music by Scarlatti, Soler, and Haydn, Nicolau de Figueiredo turns his musical attention to Johan Christian Bach. The London Bach was such an inspiration to the young Mozart that he actually used some of the sonatas recorded here and transformed them into concertos. With this recording, Figueiredo proves that Johan Christian is all but a secondary composer. Too often he is regarded as a passing stage leading to Mozart, but performed in this way—by one of the best harpsichordists of our times—this music reveals itself as a real masterpiece. As in all Passacaille recordings, Nicolau de Figeuiredo uses a splendid harpsichord made by Emile Jobin.

In the twilight of his life, at age 85, Saint-Saëns came back to wind sonatas. Although being very classical, the three 1921 sonatas announce the “Groupe des Six” neo-classicism, and particularly Poulenc. In that respect, even at the very end of his life, Saint-Saëns stands as an innovator.

Alexander AGRICOLA Missa in myne zyn
Capilla Flamenca/Dirk Snellings: director AGRICOLA: Missa in myne zyn Alexander Agricola, born in Ghent, was not only a contemporary of Josquin Desprez but also one of the most exciting composers of his period. Of his eight Masses that have survived, the Missa in myne zyn is the most demanding to perform and the most elaborate, making use of every possible technique to include the thematic material of Agricola’s own three-part song In myne zyn. The secular pieces recorded here lend themselves particularly well to the techniques of ornamentation and improvisation that the composer himself suggests. The Capilla Flamenca has long advocated the use of a group of soloists for the performance of polyphonic music; Agricola’s compositions suit the ensemble to perfection.

The successes that he booked after his first opéra comique Le Huron (1769) won him the high esteem and personal friendship of the Dauphine, after which the Court opened its doors to him and several of his works were performed there in succession. Official confirmation of his status came in 1773, when Louis XV commissioned him to write a large-scale work for a special occasion: this was to be Céphale et Procris.
