Overview

From the shifting fault lines of Hollywood fantasies and the economic and racial tensions of Reagan’s America, Fishbone rose to become one of the most original bands of the last 25 years. With a blistering combination of punk and funk, they demolished genre walls and challenged the racial stereotypes and political order of the music industry and the nation. Formed in 1979 in South Central Los Angeles, Fishbone landed a major label record deal soon after the members graduated from high school. However, after this early success the band struggled for acceptance in a racially stratified music industry while their unabashedly hybrid style kept them proudly out of fashion. When the group emerged in the ’80s, America’s melting pot was being stirred by a mosh pit of disenfranchised youth confronted with lingering racial and economic issues left unresolved by previous generations.

Lock up your women and children, and best put the men in there too—the Santa Hates You barge has been sighted at sea! Sailing the Jolly Roger, the anarchistic electro pirates are aimed directly at you … and this time, mercy is entirely out of the question. Over the last few years, Peter Spilles and Jinxy have worked their way up to become an undefeatable electro fleet, whose appearance recently caused P.A.N.I.C. far and wide. Still, this was only a taste of the missions they have written in their logbook this time. Beautiful, cruel, and superior as the sea; malignant, perfidious, and somber as a giant squid; Jolly Roger makes all the other electro projects look like bloody amateurs. Hoist the colors!

After their wild ride through the continuum, Project Pitchfork dedicates itself to quantum mechanics—and casually discovers time travel on the way! As was the case with 2010’s surprising dark electro smasher Continuum Ride, the band started its engines in utter secrecy to continue its unparalleled history of success. Here, the dark electro titans take the festivities surrounding their 20th anniversary one step further to deliver a massive meltdown that travels through the past, present, and future of dark electronica. From the radical, edgy, and aggressive “Radical Business” to the melancholic title track and the iconic “Freeze In Silence,” Quantum Mechanics is a dark transition into a new era. Superior, visionary, and deeply fascinating—Project Pitchfork gets better every year!

Overview

They say that man is the animal who laughs. But man is also the only animal that is cursed to know that someday … he gonna die. How funny is that? Very funny? Not so funny? Since when is death funny? We have all been to funerals where someone implores on behalf of the recently deceased, “Laugh. He would have wanted it that way.” Why do we care about what a dead guy wants? Not everything has to be funny. I don’t want to die. Do you? Electric Six is pleased to announce the release of its eighth studio album, Heartbeats and Brainwaves, to be released on Metropolis Records October 11, 2011. That’s right: 10-11-11. With it, Electric Six has created a work of art that confronts existential crises head-on while it manages to be so entertaining that you completely forget that your limits of time/space comprehension render you completely unable to answer why you are really here. You’re too busy falling in love with Electric Six to realize that you are being fucked with.

Overview

Since 2004, Angelspit has been one of electronic music’s most prolific acts, thrilling audiences around the world with their concoction of industrial-strength guitar riffs, clever hooks, and pathologically disturbed synths. Hello My Name Is shows that the band has no intention of relenting the glorious pounding brutality that has earned them a reputation as one of the most innovative alternative bands in the current crop. Synthesizers are slain, drum machines burn, and samplers are tortured as viscous guitars and corruptive beats are added to the mix.

Dirk Ivens formed Absolute Body Control in the early 1980s. Achieving an underground cult following, the band took influence from bands such as Suicide, D.A.F, and the UK electronic scene. After a few years, the band members all went their separate ways, with Ivans and Eric Von Wonterghem finding successes in other influential acts such as The Klinik, Dive, Sonar, Monolith, and Insekt. Twenty-two years after splitting up, ABC have re-formed to release Wind[Re]Wind, which contains newly recorded versions of their best tracks. Modern sound recording techniques blend seamlessly with the classic roots of low-fi electro.

Overview

Though only active for a couple of years, Executioner helped pioneer the early ’80s hardcore crossover sound in West Coast punk. The young group floored audiences, sharing the stage with Social Distortion, Bad Brains, Crucifix, Fang, and more. They disbanded in 1983, and sadly the only official release was a handful of demo tracks on the Growing Pains skate cassette. Now, for the first time, this disc presents all of Executioner’s 1982–83 recordings, brilliantly remastered, as well as a re-recorded track and a new rager from 2008!

Overview

In this collection of pieces created between 1983 and 1986, gentle synthesizers mix with flute, electric piano, and nature sounds to envelop the listener in a sustained, delicate, translucent atmosphere. Much of this music began as a series of early-’80s recordings commissioned by healing-arts programs, and later used for everything from personal meditation to birthing music. Today the pieces still stand as a cornerstone in bodywork, yoga, and healing therapies.

Take and See and Do What You Want Selling Points

• Mixed by Roger Moutenot (Yo La Tengo, Rogue Wave) at Haptown Studios in Nashville, TN. • Pitched to tastemaker blogs including Pitchfork, Stereogum, Magnet, and Paste. • RIYL: Low, Yo La Tengo, Arcade Fire.

Overview

Wooden Finger’s music is an eclectic, genre-skipping blend of influences ranging from classical/baroque to indie-rock/folk that creates an amalgam of sound and a unique musical identity. The thematic content takes the listener on a poignant journey through human emotions of loss, hope, and redemption that is ultimately brought together in a cohesive fashion best described as “eerie stories disguised brilliantly as songs.” This band is a mass of contradictions in both process and execution. Formed in 2004, the musical marriage of classically trained vocalist Allison Jenkins and self-taught multi-instrumentalist Matthew Magee began as a loose collection of basement tapes. Together they crafted haunting music rooted deeply in traditional folk and classical themes while continuing to explore contemporary structure and instrumentation. The product of their often cinematic collaboration was 2005’s All This Time....Still We’re Lost, a dark and emotional journey rife with themes of Southern Gothicism in the literary vein of Flannery O’Conner. The band has since expanded in both range and instrumentation, and the end product is an emotional journey founded in rock and baroque pop that leaves the listener both haunted and enthralled.

Press Quotes

“Songs as sad and haunting as ghosts rising from the delta … there is a distinctly Southern sadness in her low, echoing voice that is as hypnotic as a siren’s call … A true Southern gothic sound, their music has elements of old folk songs combined with indie rock.” — Tiger Weekly

Gutter Gaunt Gangster builds on the successes of The Weeks’ debut LP Comeback Cadillac and sophomore EP Rumspringa with six new tracks road-tested throughout the Southeast in 2010. Extensive time spent on the road as a new four-piece, after losing guitarist Chaz Lindsay, has pushed this young band into an expansive new sound that is still strong on hooks. Vocalist Cyle Barnes grows stronger with each release, so look for continued good vibes from The Weeks in 2011 and beyond.

There’s not much to say about punk’s continued existence. Like jazz or sitcoms or party politics, it just carries on eating and breathing and propagating. And this would be relevant if Neptune were a punk band, which we’re not sure is the case. They create a sense of undermining the status quo, which is pretty punk, but then they screw things up by undermining the punk status quo. Recorded at Machines With Magnets, the same studio employed by Battles, The Psychic Paramount, and The Skull Defekts, Silent Partner finds the band continuing to push their electrified, rhythmic sound while staying true to what has always made them evocative. They’re too musical to be a noise band, and yet the noises they make are never quite recognizable.

In 1994 Seattle, Kurt Cobain’s death signified the beginning of the end of the corporate grunge scene. Seattle punks were taking back their city, block by block, and a small but loyal rockabilly scene was growing. Los Gatos Locos blurred the line between rockabilly, punk, and thrash, throwing in the visuals of a good ol’ fashioned drive-in horror flick. Over the last 17 years, the band has worked hard to build and maintain their reputation as Razorcake’s “undisputed kings of American Psychobilly,” carving out their place in the sonic universe and kicking audiences from coast to coast with their exhausting live show. Even Sociopaths Get The Blues captures that brutality on disc … and the wait is finally over.

Eugene Chadbourne is like a banjo-slinging 21st-century incarnation of Mark Twain. He underlines the absurdity of the war on drugs with his classic “Choppin’ Down Weeds,” and of the war on terror with “New New War War.” But he’s far from a one-dimensional songwriter, as he also delivers a melancholic song for his father with “Put Me Back in the River” and an apocalyptic fable of greed and struggle with “Checkers of Blood.”

Bitter folks make bitter music, sad folks the same. During this session Kidd Jordan talked about overcoming health problems as well as coming out of a gig and encountering a Ku Klux Klan rally; Warren Smith talked about going to a sandwich shop in Illinois with some college friends and being told he couldn’t eat inside with the white folks. This is not political music, but there is a defiance to the playing that comes out of those experiences. In addition to waving the freak flag, there is the blues and New Orleans voodoo, and there is a lot of intelligence, humor, and awareness between the players. The record is called On Fire for a reason.

Every David S. Ware solo concert performance is a rare and magisterial happening. This happened twice in 2010, and both concerts are presented here in their entirety. The first took place in March at an intimate, invite-only event in Brooklyn (at the former site of AUM Fidelity HQ); the second took place at the Umbrella Music Festival in Chicago in early November. Further to his tenor, Ware added the sopranino to his arsenal (pitched one full octave above the alto), and these concerts were his public debut on the new horn. As Tim Niland wrote in his Music and More blog: “There is nothing rushed here, the music is patient and distinguished, and Ware’s beautiful golden tone, echoing the masters like Hawkins, Coltrane and Rollins, shines like the light from a powerful star.”

Amir ElSaffar Inana

Selling Points

• Follow-up to Amir ElSaffar’s critically acclaimed Two Rivers (2007), which combined elements of the Iraqi Maqam with jazz. • A virtuoso on his instrument, and one of very few microtonal trumpeters in the world, ElSaffar’s compositions are some of the first in the history of jazz to make use of Arabic modality and its non-western tunings. • Last release, Radif Suite (2010), was named a New York Times Critics’ Pick. • Full press mailing to newspapers, music critics, jazz magazines, and influential blogs. • Full radio servicing to CMJ and JazzWeek panel stations and NPR programming. • RIYL: John Zorn Masada, Dave Douglas.

Overview

Inana is the follow-up to trumpeter Amir ElSaffar’s critically acclaimed 2007 release Two Rivers, which All Music Guide called “as impressive a debut as we’ve had in America in the 21st century.” In the four years since that release, ElSaffar’s compositional voice and palette have only advanced. While Two Rivers was about combining elements found in Iraqi music with the rhythms and aesthetics of modern jazz, Inana expands on that concept to include a microtonal harmonic and melodic language that combines the pitch-flexibility of Middle Eastern modality with the modulating melodic sensibilities of modern jazz.

Overview

Life is full of surprises, and nobody knows this better than Kathryn Calder. After years of performing with indie darlings Immaculate Machine, she found herself unexpectedly asked to record and tour with The New Pornographers and was almost immediately inducted as a full-fledged member of that group. In 2010 she released her first solo album, Are You My Mother?, which garnered glowing reviews and foreshadowed the vast array of sonic experimentation the songwriter was capable of exploring. Now, just one year after the release of her debut (which was dedicated to the memory of her late mother), Calder has returned with another full-length record. Written and recorded in a relatively short amount of time, the appropriately titled Bright and Vivid is a masterfully refined piece of work that illustrates a maturation that can only come from intense growth and change. Backed by a newly minted band consisting of Lane Arndt, Stefan Bozenich, and Marek Tyler, Kathryn also worked with friends & fans including Jon Wurster (Superchunk, Mountain Goats), Dean Tzenos (Odonis Odonis), Barry Mirochnick & Paul Rigby (Neko Case), Jesse Zubot, and Ford Pier.

Formed over a decade ago, Vancouver-based In Medias Res has risen from a fledgling act full of potential to one of the most lauded indie rock bands in the city, and their brand-new release has them poised to reach new heights. Three years ago, after touring extensively, selling out multiple pressings of their Intimacy EP and debut Of What Was, and establishing a passionate fan base across the country, the band went into the studio. Re-teaming with esteemed local producer Jonathan Anderson (Aidan Knight, Stablio), the quartet intended to best their previous effort, which was met with glowing reviews. But then life intervened. Rumors spread of the band’s demise as the album was slow in coming; meanwhile, the band rewrote, re-recorded, and remixed. In the assured hands of Dave Carswell and John Collins the album finally found its form: It Was Warm and Sunny When We First Set Out. Already garnering significant buzz—including ranking as the #1 seller on Bandcamp with over 20,000 total plays to date—the album will be released in 2011, with a national tour to follow in support.

Overview

Legendary producer John Fryer (Depeche Mode, Cocteau Twins) and enchanting vocalist Rebecca Coseboom (Stripmall Architecture, Halou) are DarkDriveClinic. While John spent the better part of three decades helping sculpt the sound of classic albums that defined labels like 4AD and Mute, the seeds for the songs found on Noise In My Head were taking root. Ethereal, emotive, heartbreaking, and powerful, Rebecca’s stunning voice seethes and undulates through the music as the perfect balance of vocals and production creates one of the most accomplished releases we’ve heard in years.

We are Straftanz. We scream freedom, yet we are not free. We are without morale and discipline, yet you adore us. We are the soft concrete that offers good rest for your weary brains. We piss on graves to show you that parables are sometimes parabolic. We know the hand that held the chisel, but that does not mean the words engraved in stone have meaning for us. The elite tremble in fear, even though they have no idea what we hung up above their heads. We are not crazy, not wise, not original, not ironic, and not abstract. But we will drown your hierarchies in sweat. Get ready. Mainstream. Sellout. Overground.

From Buffalo, NY, Pentimento strives to create a sound focused on the raw emotion of the punk scene that birthed them. The band entered the studio earlier this year to record their newest EP, Wrecked. The goal was to bring the most genuine experience possible to the listener, with the hopes that the same experience that is put across in their live show comes out on their recordings. As one of the most honest EPs to come out this year, Wrecked has surpassed that goal.
