Bearing witness to a miraculously preserved and somewhat mysterious musical world, this precious recording reveals a repertoire at once sober and poetic, which invites us into the gates of those convents that attracted a public enthralled by their angelic voices and animated by a single authentic faith that further increased the powerful appeal and mystery of their singing.

Sir Thomas’s performance of Schubert’s Ninth is fascinating and often gripping, but the highlight of the program is Delius’ In a Summer Garden, which is pure magic from beginning to end.” — Gramophone Editor’s Choice Live recordings from the Royal Festival Hall in December 1956; Usher Hall, Edinburgh Festival in August 1956; and Royal Festival Hall in 1955. Matthews took the cue from Berlioz to use a harp in four of the songs and the result, I think, is wonderfully true to the spirit of the original, weightless and suggestive.” — Gramophone This CD continues SOMM’s close collaboration with the Orchestra of the Swan under its charismatic conductor, David Curtis. This live recording was made during the orchestra’s first concert season as Resident Chamber Orchestra at Birmingham’s prestigious Town Hall. The CD contains the chamber version of Mahler’s 4th Symphony arranged for chamber ensemble by Schoenberg’s pupil Erwin Stein, coupled with a premiere recording of Berlioz’s Les Nuits d’été arranged for voice and chamber ensemble by well-known British composer David Matthews, sung here by distinguished mezzo-soprano Heather Shipp.

In 2005, Joyce Yang became the youngest-ever medalist of the Van Cliburn International Competition, and in 2010 she was awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant. She now makes her recording debut for Avie with a collage of pieces that illuminate each other in arresting ways: Sebastian Currier’s Scarlatti Cadences reflect the repetitious melodic motifs of Scarlatti’s Sonatas, Lowell Liebermann’s Gargoyles echo the esoteric timelessness of Debussy’s Estampes, and Liszt’s transcription of Chopin’s song My Joys opens a window onto Schumann’s Carnaval. Appropriately, the repertoire Joyce chose for this recording is inspired by vivid imagery, and the striking artwork is the result of a collaboration with artist Joan Snyder, whose colorful paintings are featured throughout.

Like the previous releases, these live recordings capture the spirit and freshness of these remarkable, genre-busting works as well as the excitement, atmosphere, and energy of the chamber orchestra under Music Director Douglas Boyd. Manchester Camerata has become one of the finest, most innovative chamber orchestras in the UK, and Douglas Boyd has proven to be an eminent Beethovenian. After he conducted the composer’s Fidelio at the 2009 Garsington Opera Festival, The Times noted “his grasp of Beethovenian idiom” and “pungent underlining of orchestral detail,” praising the musical performance as “sublime and exultant.” This is the penultimate release in the Douglas Boyd-Manchester Camerata Beethoven Symphony cycle.

Pour une Larme

The French Connection

The piano pieces recorded on this CD are an excellent representation of the piano music of Joaquim Cassadó, from the sensual Pour une larme and the typical “Catalan Habanera” Zerka to the waltz Toujour and the elegant salon piece Adieu des Oiseaux au Printemps.

All of the music on this CD was written between 1895 and 1909, the year of Albeniz’s death. It is a remarkable document, for it shows the great variety of styles and colors that composers were using at the time. The sublime music seduces listeners with its sensual and subtle use of color.

Sel. from the Codex la Huelgas Sel. of Moorish poetry & music in medieval Spain Capella de Ministrers offers a magical journey into the Moorish world of poetry and music in Medieval Spain. The rich cultural heritage of the Moors, who invaded Spain in the 700s and brought with them a rich culture of music and poetry, was at its height in the 12th and 13th centuries. These influences are a magical contrast to the music styles so popular in northern Europe at the time.

22

The so-called Codex las Huelgas, named after the famous Cistercian monastery of Burgos where it is kept, is probably the best musical-liturgical book of the Medieval Hispanic era. Compiled in the early 14th century for the daily use of the offices of that religious community, is a truly exceptional piece.

Although he achieved worldwide success, mainly due to his great soundtracks, the composer counts a vast and eclectic output that remains largely unknown. In its usual work in support of great Italian repertoire, Tactus aims to fill part of this void by presenting a series of works for flute and piano. Flute virtuoso Roberto Fabbriciani was a friend and partner to Rota, and here he pays homage to one of the greatest composers of the 20th century.

Shebalin had to endure much hardship; along with friend & colleague Shostakovich he was one of the composers condemned in the infamous 1948 Party congress in Moscow, and in later life he fought to overcome a series of crippling strokes. However, he faced these tribulations with understated but unshakable optimism, as these touching choruses reveal.

Each volume will be placed in the literary context of the time in which it was created through fragments taken from novels, poems, or the correspondence of artists. Eric Le Sage will work on this series together with François Salque, with whom he shares a great musical affinity. Soundman Jean-Marc Laisné (who recorded the integral works of Schumann) will record the pieces in the auditorium of Grenoble, a hall famous for its acoustics. Through the combination of their talents, the men will breathe new life into these well-known pieces.

Fuga Libera Alexander Kniazev: cello Plamena Mangova: piano FRANCK (tr. Delsart): Sonata in A • Nocturne • YSAŸE: Berceuse • Poème élégiaque After years of fruitful cooperation with Evgeni Kissin, Nikolaï Luganski, and Boris Berezovski, Alexander Kniazev has found in Plamena Mangova a worthy partner for this tribute to the Franco-Belgian school, and in particular to the outstanding violinist Eugène Ysaÿe. The composer, to whom the César Franck Sonata was dedicated, enjoyed playing the cello—and did so very competently—when he played music at home with friends. His warm and powerful sound gave the Franck Sonata the feel of a cathedral, and very soon the Sonata was published in a version for cello authorized by the composer and carried out by Jules Delsart. In his turn, Alexander Kniazev proposes his vision of a few other pages by Franck and Ysaÿe, among which the magnificent Poème élégiaque, source of Chausson’s Poème, is a premiere on disc in a beautifully suited new form.

Sir Alexander Gibson was renowned for his work in Scotland, although he spent six years with Sadlers Wells Opera in the fifties, becoming its youngest Music Director. In 1959 he was appointed Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. He was the first Scotsman to hold the post, and under his direction the orchestra’s prestige grew steadily, enhanced by foreign tours, major festival appearances, and many recordings. In 1984, he became Honorary President of the RSNO in recognition of his services to the orchestra and his immense contribution to the musical life of Scotland. Sir Alexander appeared regularly in the US since his debut there in 1969 with the Detroit Symphony, and in 1974 he conducted the first American performance of Monteverdi’s II Ritorno d’Ulisse in Washington DC. He was Principal Guest Conductor of the Houston Symphony from 1981 to 1983, and conducted the orchestras of Philadelphia, Cleveland, San Jose, Indianapolis, New Orleans, Saint Louis, Los Angeles, and Pittsburgh. Two tours of the US and Canada with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra brought acclaim for both orchestra and conductor.

Reinbert de Leeuw studied theory and piano under Jaap Spaanderman at the Vereniging Het Muzieklyceum in Amsterdam, and composition under Kees van Baaren at the Koninklijk Conservatorium in the Hague. He is well known as a pianist and conductor of contemporary music, and was one of the founders of the Dutch Charles Ives Society (1968). He has devoted himself to the performance of music by lesser-known modern composers such as Satie and George Antheil, and to developing alternative ways of performing chamber music.

Antonio Vivaldi is by far the most prolific composer of concertos in musical history; around 475 of his concertos have survived. As a celebrated virtuoso violinist, it is not surprising that he composed mainly for violin, either as soloist or in the concertante group. But Vivaldi also demonstrated a keen interest in other melodic instruments of the period, enriching their repertoire with imaginative and virtuosic compositions. His second choice of solo instrument is, surprisingly, the bassoon. His 39 concertos for bassoon with strings and continuo remain somewhat of an enigma. They are the first such works in history, and there is no indication for whom they are written nor why there are so many. It is possible that they were written for a student virtuoso at the Ospedale della Pietà, where Vivaldi served intermittently throughout his career, and one visitor indeed listed the bassoon among the instruments he heard there, but there are no records of a bassoon teacher nor of the purchase of any such instrument. Furthermore, the instrument is conspicuously absent even among those typical Pietà showcases of rare instruments, such as the oratorio Juditha Triumphans of 1716.

Jan Vermeulen: fortepiano Christine Busch: violin France Springuel: cello Paul de Clerck: viola Jan Buysschaert: double bass SCHUBERT: Arpeggione Sonata in A minor, D. 821 • Piano Quintet in A, D. 667 “Trout” “This series continues to be most impressive. Vermeulen must be the ideal Schubert player, and the instrument, a superbly restored Streicher und Sohn of 1826, has an astonishing range of dynamics from a powerful fortissimo to an especially beautiful pianissimo, and it has a wonderful clarity of articulation.” — Early Music Review In the works recorded here, Schubert reveals himself as a master when it comes to the exploitation of melodic and harmonic possibilities. A particularly fine example of this can be heard in the Adagio of the Arpeggione Sonata; the intense melody is supported by harmonies that are extremely penetrating, and the opening movement of the Trout Quintet also bears witness to Schubert’s taste for unorthodox harmony. Schubert delights in giving his harmony form in inventive accompanying passages; the double bass plays a crucial role in this respect in the Trout Quintet. Schubert’s preference for dance and folk music also trickles through, as we can hear in the final movements of the Arpeggione Sonata and the Trout Quintet.

Tetraktys Kees Boeke: director 9 selections from the Codex Chantilly The Chantilly codex is the most sumptuous of the manuscripts transmitting the fascinating polyphonic songs of the late 14th-century France in a style known as the “ars subtilior,” the “more subtle art.” In the songs of this period, composers exerted themselves to express ever more complex rhythms, inventing new notational symbols to express them. The expression of the musical rhythm through notation was such a hot-button issue that a number of songs in the manuscript actually take it on as a topic, becoming self-referential essays about musical composition. In addition, the composers of this music worked in the great courts of Europe, and politics and political events invariably made their way into the song repertory.

In addition to an extensive career as a soloist and chamber player, Bilson has toured with the English Baroque Soloists with John Eliot Gardiner, the Academy of Ancient Music with Christopher Hogwood, the Philharmonia Baroque under Nicholas McGegan, Tafelmusik of Toronto, Concerto Köln, and other orchestras around the world. Completed on New Year’s Eve of 1949, the piece was a sonata in three movements in F minor. Though it unfortunately does not remain intact, it was the provenance of the earliest work on this disc, the Elegy for cello and piano, Op. 5. Leighton would continue to write for the cello on a regular basis, with a plethora of compositions that include the instrument in various guises: as a solo instrument, with piano, in a concerto role, in various chamber permutations, and within an orchestra. This particular collection focuses on the substantial contribution of solo works (including those with piano) that Leighton made to the cello repertoire.

Treasures of Aránzazu Vol. 1

Gardens of the night

The archive of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Aránzazu at Oñate is one of the most outstanding centers for the study of sacred music from the 16th–19th centuries. A good portion of the works recorded here date from the 18th century, when the chapel reached its maximum splendor under the guidance of such outstanding composers as Fray Agustín de Echeverria, Fray Domingo de Aguirre, and Fray Juan Baustista de Tellería.

José Luis Greco (b. 1953) is one of the notable composers in the current panorama of serious music in this country. His masterly string quartet Trouble was clearly influenced by Schnittke, composed to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Mondriaan Quartet. The two works that complete this program, both for string quartet and mezzo-soprano, are rooted in Spanish texts by Lorca, Machado, and Bécquer.

The Complete Piano Works

The twelve piano pieces on this disc represent all of Manuel de Falla’s output for this instrument alone. They also comprise one of the less-familiar facets of the work of this maestro from Cadiz, perhaps because some were composed during his youth and then consigned to obscurity by the critics of the time—even by the composer himself, who called them “nonsense.” Now, they are considered among the most emotive of Falla’s works.

The first album from young Italian composer and pianist Aureliano Cattaneo, who studied with Gérard Grisey and Mauricio Sotelo, engages with the great Spanish poetry of Cervantes, Góngora, Alcázar, Polo de Medina, Villegas, and Hurtado de Mendoza to offer a varied succession of images in which the dominant theme of love is placed at the service of a game of language based on an eccentric, witty mixture of the banal and the sublime.

Muffat’s Concerti Grossi were first inspired in Italy, in the Roman literary salons in which Corelli and Pasquini used to perform. This CD also includes the Sonata for violin solo, which clearly includes affects of the Italian manner, alternating melodic movements, rhythms, and sections in a stylus phantasticus.

Nods and secret signals between the musicians are often necessary to master the music and reach the finish line together. This time I wanted to try another tack and write a piece that would be simply fun to rehearse. In this piano trio the musicians can steal the march on each other in a rewarding manner, play tag and unconcernedly enjoy their supple ensemble technique. Work becomes fun!”
