CANADA With all the attention that the new CIVIL WARS record is getting — from NPR, ROLLING STONE, BILLBOARD, and more — it’s high time to remind listeners of JOHN PAUL WHITE’S solo record, available now from Arkam Records. A dark, brooding, and brilliant piece of work originally self-released in 2008, White’s solo album presents a fresh take on the classic Southern Gothic style, presented by the then-undiscovered talent. The wild horse. We romanticize this magnificent creature, and rightly so. We marvel at the horse that dares to run free through mountain streams and mountain shit, forging his own path, blazing his own trails. We know he spends his downtime whinnying in delight that he is never going to spend his life partially encased in leather, trotting slowly with his head hanging down as he carries a field trip of suburban fourth graders who crack themselves up whenever he sports an uncontrollable erection. The wild horse gets hard whenever he wants. And nobody laughs. And he loves that about himself. The American male needs to feel like a wild horse from time to time, and Electric Six is a band from Detroit comprised of six American males. The American male, upon birth, is issued three Wild Horse Cards from the United States Department of Agriculture, and he can play these cards at any point in his life when he needs to feel like a wild horse for a year. This is the year that all six members of Electric Six have elected to play their cards at the same time, and the result is the band’s ninth studio album, Mustang.

Blending elements of electronica, pop, hip-hop, and rock, Kloq are passionate about what they do. From live performance and technology to studio production and attention to every detail, Kloq continues to move forward. One of the most sought-after African albums. A rare slice of psychedelic funk. Original copies now fetch up to $4,000! CD and vinyl reissue features original artwork.

Chapter One was Blo’s debut album, originally released by EMI in 1973. The group was remarkable for a variety of reasons: it was arguably the first rock trio to emerge from Africa, and its members had a pedigree like few others at the time, having worked as part of Ginger Baker’s band Salt in the years leading to their formation. But the album’s enduring appeal and significance resides in the music: eight tracks of infectious afro-rock that took the band’s Afrobeat foundations and melded them with the western psychedelia, rock, and funk of the late sixties. Making the most of the band’s trio format, Chapter One features outstanding guitar work from Jones backed by the funky interplay of Akintobi’s drums and Odumosu’s bass. Many of the album tracks are remarkable in how they balance a clearly rock-inspired drive with an otherworldly, psychedelic vibe. Track Listing: Preacherman • Time to Face the Sun • Beware • We Gonna Have a Party • Don’t • Chant To Mother Earth • We’re Out Together • Miss “Sagitt” (Instrumental)

Originally released in 1975 via Sonny Roberts’ Orbitone label, Miliki Sound highlights talented Nigerian multi-instrumentalist Peter King’s unique blend of Afrobeat, Highlife, jazz, and funk. As King remarked later in life, Miliki Sound was his attempt to escape being tied down to one label by delving into his own Afro-jazz fusion. Although the album made little impact in his homeland, it was particularly well received in America and Europe. And as with his other releases from the same period, Miliki Sound was entirely composed, written, and arranged by King. Upbeat and funky, the album’s six tracks feature plenty of impressive displays of King’s saxophone skills, the instrument for which he was perhaps best known, alongside a talent for arrangement that plays the funk of the groove against the accompanying instruments and Nigerian chants. You only need to listen to see why King’s Afro-jazz approach, a blend of modern jazz with Highlife, has proven so popular and continued to endure for over three decades.

Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach is considered by many to be the foremost Jewish religious songwriter of the 20th century. These performances were recorded July 21–22, 1986 in Johannesburg at The Civic. The show was considered “electrifying” by the Mayor Prof Harold G Rudolph, who sent a letter to the promoter regarding the performance the following day. This is the first release of this performance, a 2013 mastering by the executive musical curator of the estate of Shlomo Carlebach, Mark Ambrosino.

J.B. Beverley has never won a Grammy Award®. He has never toured on a tour bus, had a big management company, or had a big record label behind him. What he has done is survive, both personal hardship and the ever-changing currents in music, without losing himself in the process. He is one of those children of the ’70s who holds both Merle Haggard and Lemmy as heroes. His newest album, Stripped to the Root, combines the Appalachian country-blues-driven roots music of the Wayward Drifters with distinct rock and roll, old-time folk, and Americana elements. It is truly a mixed bag — but don’t worry, you won’t see J.B. conforming to the latest trends or trying to recreate anything he’s done before.

Earlier this year, we introduced North America to the genius that is Mechanical Cabaret. Their greatest hits release, Selective Hearing, covered the band’s illustrious 13-year existence and provided a solid representation of what the band is capable of achieving. In addition, Selective Hearing featured a new track, “Why So Serious?,” included on the album to provide a glimpse of what lay ahead. Picking up where “Why So Serious?” left off, the duo of Roi Robertson and Steve Bellamy continue to explore unknown territories and experiment with sound manipulations. They combine hard electro, pounding beats, and infectious melodies with a heavy dose of British black humor and wit. This sound is none more evident than on the tracks, “I Lost My Friend to a Video Game” and “Well, I Never.”

As the “Masses” amassed, it became clear Amenra was a serious contender within the post/sludge/doom genre. Last year’s Mass V (Neurot, 2012), released to universal acclaim, further highlighted the gravity and sincerity of Amenra’s unique vision. Now, with this reissue of the long out-of-print debut album, we take a step back to celebrate the album that started the procession a decade ago. Mass I, rooted in the (post)-hardcore and noise scene, reveals an ambitious outfit set to preach their distinctive blurring of genres and musical conventions, and the original recording’s brilliance is finally revealed by Billy Anderson’s (Eyehategod, Melvins, Neurosis, Swans) tremendous remastering. The third full-length album from Germany’s Vortex, in a limited edition of 600 copies. During a long trip to India some years ago, the idea grew to compose a whole album focusing on the Dark Age of Hindu mythology, the “Iron Age” or “Kali Yuga.” Marcus S. instinctively felt that this would serve as a great metaphor for the current crises in the world during this time of corruption, decline, and war. The concept also allowed him to dive even deeper into shamanistic ritual sounds, and to create a multi-layered and trans-cultural musical metaphor. This album is more archaic, drum-driven, and spiritual than anything he has done before, a three-year work in progress that aims to go beyond the boundaries of apocalyptic ambience to be seen as modern aural shamanism. The Japanese term “ukiyo,” translated as “the floating world,” was used to describe the pleasure-seeking urban culture of Edo, Japan. When alternately rendered as “sorrowful world,” the term took on Buddhist connotations, indicating the transitory nature of human experience. These two seemingly opposed yet sympathetic concepts have always heavily informed the music of the band The Floating World, and each album has been created with these as central themes. Named for a novel by William Morris, The Wood Beyond the World is The Floating World’s latest album, an attempt to capture the journey from the mundane to the illusory made by the novel’s protagonist — a journey that reflects the hunt for the temporal and intangible the band’s name intimates. New York City is a world of shadows, thieves, and con men; its chilling concrete landscapes are a fitting filmic backdrop for the aural futuristic pleasures of NOIR, a band whose deep electronic rhythms fuel darkened beats that conjure stark cinematic images from yesteryear merged with the cold machinery of the future. Conceptualized by vocalist Athan Maroulis, veteran of the pioneering electronic industrial act Spahn Ranch, NOIR is a sensuous electronic return to form for Maroulis, who also fronts dark cabaret legends Black Tape for a Blue Girl. NOIR combines the bleak irony of Weegee photos, fleshy lyrics, empty subway stations, and the dark sarcasm of Rod Serling into a collection of throbbing dance floor interludes. Surreal and sensual, Darkly Near is a brilliant merger of Maroulis’ past with a contemporary yet moody present. Opium was originally circulated among a group of fellow patrons in the underground scene of Hamburg in 1984 as a home-taped run of cassette tapes. There never existed any actual master tapes, let alone any professional equipment to record the album. In the early ’90s, one of the original cassette tapes, sharing a sealed leaden box with a rotting sausage, was salvaged from a WWII air raid shelter, flooded with sewage during the aftermath of a fire that had ravaged the building above. Opium shows the roots of KMFDM, from the bold experimentation to the dissonant sound effects, but contained within these tracks is the wellspring from which the KMFDM “ultra heavy beat” was born. At first glimpse, KMFDM’s WWIII is an inspired, concussive affair. The junior-Bush-led second Iraq war had given KMFDM plenty of fuel for its fire, and this album finds Sascha & Co. at their aggressive, confrontational best. The album was originally released in 2003, following 2002’s ATTAK, and presented a stance angrier than ever, yet still able to bring KMFDM’s trademark wry sense of humor, as evidenced by the track “Intro” closing out the album by describing the band with the line “a beautiful girl and some dirty old men…” Yet upon its re-release in late 2013, nothing feels dated; it sounds as urgent and angsty as you like your KMFDM to be. With Kontributions from Lucia Cifarelli, William Rieflin, Raymond Watts, Jules Hodgson, Andy Selway, Steve White, and the ever-present Sascha Konietzko, KMFDM declares war on ‘ze vorld!

Trumpeter Amir ElSaffar’s Alchemy continues his investigations of tonal systems of other cultures within a jazz context. A recent recipient of the prestigious Doris Duke Performing Artist Award, Amir has been residing in Egypt, further absorbing the musical language of the Middle East, which is beautifully reflected in his use of Sumerian and Babylonian modes alongside his own microtonal melodic and harmonic language. With Alchemy, his first recording for standard jazz quintet instrumentation, Amir builds on the work of previous recordings to create more forward-looking works; music that continues to open the door to new possibilities for the future of jazz. “Amir ElSaffar is uniquely poised to reconcile jazz and Arabic music without doing either harm.” — THE WIRE “Avoids the sensationalistic and touristic in favor of the sincere and investigatory, searching for a common or at least consonant elements of the vocabularies of jazz and classical Arabic music.” — DOWNBEAT

From the introductory melody of the opener “Reflector of Truth,” William Hooker’s second recording for Engine Studios is tour de force of drumming. Tracked in the Spring 2013 in Roulette’s beautifulsounding new room in downtown Brooklyn, on this album Hooker is joined by trumpeter Roy Campbell and multi- instrumentalist David Soldier. Whereas Hooker’s Engine Studios debut featured the mighty saxophone skronk of Sabir Mateen, Campbell’s extended melodic work on trumpet, pocket trumpet, and flute sweetens Heart of the Sun. The trio’s cup of energy surely does runneth over in many places, but there are long passages throughout where they re more interested in building a structure of rhythm and melody rather than burning the whole thing down.

Shortly after the release of Duane Pitre’s Feel Free CD/LP, the composer set out for a 2012 solo tour in select European cities. To start off the tour he staged an ensemble performance of “Feel Free” at London’s renowned Café OTO. For his ensemble, Pitre chose to utilize only one veteran of a “Feel Free” performance (Jesse Sparhawk), and for the remainder of the group he used English musicians who had not played the composition prior. The resulting performance sees “Feel Free” taking new shapes and producing different energies than the studio recording.

Steve Gunn and Mike Gangloff (Pelt) combine six-and 12-string guitars with gongs, tanpura, singing bowls, shruti box, and banjo for a gorgeous collection of improvised compositions. The two artists took it pretty far off the beaten path for Melodies for a Savage Fix, sequestering themselves for an overnight session in the remote farmhouse/recording studio of noted roots-music engineer Joseph Dejarnette (Carolina Chocolate Drops, Bruce Greene, Curtis Eller) in the countryside of Floyd County, Virginia. There in the tiny community of Topeka, miles from the county’s one traffic light, they set up an assortment of six- and 12-string guitars, gongs and Indian instruments, plus the banjo Gangloff sometimes plays at monthly square dances at a country store just up the road, and settled in for an intense night of improvisation.
