RECENT NEWS & REVIEWS “Recordings of Beethoven’s Triple Concerto, Op. 56, by a piano trio rather than by a group of virtuosi (a configuration that almost always misunderstands the work) are not abundant. Still rarer are those like the present release by the Storioni Trio … this performance is especially good at bringing out the work’s playful nature, with the thematic material of the opening movement batted around among the soloists, and between soloists and orchestra, in unpredictable ways.” — All Music Guide HHHH

“Improvisation has a new sound: For most musicians, the words ‘improvised’ and ‘concerto’ are mutually exclusive. For Mark O’Connor, the two make a perfect match … O’Connor considers the project a melding of his two musical passions, having split his professional life between presenting styles in the catch-all ‘American music’ category (his 2011 album An Appalachian Christmas appeared on both the Bluegrass and Classical charts) and composing in classical forms, such as symphonies and string quartets.” — Wall Street Journal

Piano winner of the 2006 BBC Young Musician Award, she was propelled into an international career as one of the outstanding pianists of her generation, and in 2011 was awarded First Prize at the Concours International de Piano in Aix-en-Provence.

Alexander Baillie: cello John Thwaites: piano BRIDGE Cello Sonata in D minor, H125 • DELIUS: Cello Sonata • IRELAND: Cello Sonata in G minor • CLARKE: Cello Sonata (premiere) • KEYS: Cello Sonata (premiere) • RUBBRA: Cello Sonata in G minor, Op. 60 SOMM is well known for its promotion of British music, and its catalog boasts many world premiere recordings. This impressive double disc is no exception, featuring the well-loved Cello Sonatas of Bridge, Delius, Ireland, and Rubbra as well as two world premieres — the Cello Sonatas by Rebecca Clarke (1919), and Ivor Keys (1960). Clarke was Stanford’s first female pupil at RCM and became a professional violist, having taken lessons with Lionel Tertis. Listening to her Sonata, described as sensuous, Bacchanalian, intoxicating, and languid by turns, reminds us that she felt closest to the music of both Debussy and Ravel. Ivor Keys was organ scholar at Christ Church, Oxford, and an accomplished musician who made his career as an academic at the Universities of Belfast. Cellist Alexander Baillie is recognized as one of the finest musicians of his generation; his teachers were Fournier, Rostropovich, du Pré, and William Pleeth.

Among today’s most notable Handel specialists, the all-girl group follows their first two records — the world-premiere chamber version of Handel’s ‘Oxford’ Water Music (Gramophone Editor’s Choice) and their sparkling rendition of the Trio Sonatas, Op. 5 — with the composer’s other great set of Trio Sonatas, Op. 2. An utterly memorable collection of works that features Handel’s imaginative “re-heating” of his own popular tunes, the recording once again brings forth the band’s sheer pleasure in sharing the composer’s wonderful music.

In his latest for AVIE, Made in Germany, he turns to his fellow countrymen in repertoire that ranges from the Baroque to the present day. Any overview of German violin music must include J.S. Bach, as Zack’s previous two releases did, and also turn-of-the20th-century titan Max Reger, who clearly based his solo violin output on that of his 17th-century predecessor. Zack includes a world premiere recording of a work dedicated to him by Klaus Heinrich Stahmer, but the crowning achievement of this recording is the Complete Works for Solo Violin by Hindemith, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the composer’s death.

The Sixteen Harry Christophers: conductor J.S. BACH: Mass in G minor BWV 235 • Cantata 102 – Herr, deine Augen BWV 102 • Mass in F major BWV 233 “[The Sixteen] performs with outstanding virtuosity and dedication.” — Opera Now “As musically intelligent and invigorating as we have come to expect from this ensemble, with first rate solo singing and orchestral playing.” — BBC Music Magazine It is with great delight that CORO announces the release of the first of two new recordings of J.S. Bach’s Lutheran Masses by The Sixteen. The fact that The Sixteen has not performed or recorded such a wealth of Bach’s music in nearly 20 years makes this a uniquely exciting project! Sometimes called “Missa brevis,” the Masses are almost entirely made up of movements borrowed from Bach’s Cantatas but, while they are often overshadowed by the more famous Mass in B minor, the beauty of these short Masses is that they represent Bach’s own choice of his finest Cantata movements. Despite their exquisite beauty, featuring splendid choruses and deeply moving arias, there are relatively few recordings of the Lutheran Masses. Review Copies sent to U.S. press and radio stations. The disc includes a well-contrasted overview of a number of Liszt’s most popular and challenging works by the great Hungarian pianist and composer, including the devilish Mephisto Waltz No. 1 and the wonderfully characterized Rigoletto Paraphrase, set against works such as the Consolation No. 3 and Un Sospiro. Kreisler, Gershwin, and Monti are played here with flair and exuberance; by contrast Massenet, Fauré, Manuel Ponce, and Sibelius are honest and moving. The touching beauty of Annabel Thwaite’s piano playing comes to the fore in solo works by Chopin and Schubert. Uniquely, this disc fuses the familiar with rarely performed masterpieces by Reynaldo Hahn and John Ireland, and two premiere recordings: Caspi’s “La Trenza” and a simple, sublime arrangement of Welsh lullaby “Suo Gan,” well known (if not by its title) from the film Empire of the Sun.

Winter & Winter Calefax Reed Quintet Asko Schönberg Ensemble Reinbert de Leeuw: conductor ABRAHAMSEN: Bei Anbruch (Musique concrète) • Walden • In den Wäldern (Musique concrète) • Wald • Zur Nacht (Musique concrète) On this disc, the music of “Wald” and “Walden” are embedded in field recordings by Stefan Winter. The title was borrowed from American philosopher Henry David Thoreau, who wrote about a life of solitude in the woods, where he spent two years in an attempt to abandon all artificial, society-grown needs and rediscover the oneness of the human being with nature. Similarly, “Walden” was composed in a style of “new simplicity,” in which unnecessary material was peeled back in order to make space for other characteristics such as conciseness and clarity.

Stone Records Robert Costin: organ J.S. BACH: Goldberg Variations “Costin’s playing is honest and stylistically sensitive … The organ is the 1980 Mander instrument (with some pipework dating back to 1708) at Pembroke College, Cambridge; probably the first attempt in the UK to partially reconstruct a lost historic organ. Thirty-plus years later it sounds fresh, engaging, and well-matched to the ringing acoustics of Wren’s chapel.” — Choir and Organ Bach’s 1741 masterpiece played on the organ of Pembroke College, Cambridge (dating from 1708). There are a considerable number of omissions in the Ireland discography, and this complete survey will rectify that, presenting every song with the full texts and detailed notes that have become the trademark of Stone Records’ releases. This first volume includes five premiere recordings: the excellent ballads that Ireland composed under the pseudonym Turlay Royce. These rarities are presented alongside some of his most famous settings of Masefield (Sea fever), Housman (The heart’s desire), and Brooke (Spring sorrow). Ireland’s songs are well loved by singers and listeners alike; hauntingly poignant and beautifully melodious, they are the epitome of English song.

Berlin Classics Claire Huangci: piano TCHAIKOVSKY: Concert Suite (Sleeping Beauty) • Dance of the Sugar-Plum Fairy (The Nutcracker) • PROKOFIEV: Ten Piano Pieces (Romeo and Juliet) A debut full of lust for life and soulful feelings! Russian repertoire suits her very well at the moment, because she has a very personal approach to it, concludes Claire Huangci. Not just because of the virtuosic vigor that the dainty pianist brings to her playing, but because of the wealth of images and emotions. Concertgoers who have seen the young Chinese-American perform live will understand at once. It is simply that she has a special energy, powerful yet flexible, with which she can give intelligent context and nimble form to the smallest detail or fling wonderful arches across time and space. No surprise, then, that she decided on “The Sleeping Beauty” as the title of her CD debut featuring music by Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev: the selections from the ballets Sleeping Beauty and Romeo and Juliet admirably capture the youthful freshness of a pianist in her early twenties.

More, maybe, than one would expect of a world-class clarinetist — unless you know that she has been married for many years to an opera conductor, and so feels quite at home with music drama. Then you will also understand that her new CD Opera! fulfils a long-held dream and, at the same time, adds several interesting pieces to the instrument’s relatively limited concert repertoire. In any case, this recording goes far beyond what one normally expects of arrangements. Together with Andreas Tarkmann, Sharon went through the Italian repertoire, not afraid to veer off the beaten track, and found suitable pieces that the famous arranger could tailor to the artist and her instrument. Music by Romantic opera composers comes across differently here, imaginatively adapted to the potential of clarinet and chamber orchestra.

Quartets, Op. 8

12 Catalan Sonatas

This CD contains Luigi Boccherini’s Quartets, Op. 8 dedicated to enrapture the ears and taste of his future protective Infante Don Luis de Borbón. The lavishly expressive slow movements suggest a musical tribute to the well-known melancholy of the Borbons and distinguish the Op. 8 quartets from the compositions that came before them.

26

The historical trajectory of these sonatas shows us the presence of classical and pre-Romantic styles in Catalonia, with an appreciable output associated with the monastery of Montserrat.

Evil Penguin Records Dietrich Henschel: baritone Boris Berezovsky: piano MAHLER: Wunderhorn Songs Recordings of the Wunderhorn Songs are extremely rare, and even concerts and recordings devoted to Wunderhorn materials are unusual. Mahler translated the clash between the fairytale surface and deeper significance into some of the most exotic, visionary, and uncomfortable music he ever wrote. Acclaimed German baritone Dietrich Henschel presents a rare fusion of the dramatic content and vocal import of these songs, teaming up with Russian piano virtuoso Boris Berezovsky. The unique detail of this new CD is in the fact that Dietrich sings all the songs himself, though they were intended for male and female singers. The album is a special release to mark the future launch of a film project about the War Compromises, titled Wunderhorn.

Between 1709 and 1711 (the dates are uncertain), he was engaged as a double bass player in the celebrated Dresden orchestra, one of the best orchestras in Europe at the time. The date of the composition of the Trio Sonatas is usually placed between 1720 and 1722. We do not know who first performed them, but since the Dresden orchestra included some of the best instrumentalists of the time, there is no lack of candidates: oboe players La Riche and Richter, bassoon players Böhme and Cadet, Pisendel or Volumier for the violin part of Sonata III, Weiss on the theorbo perhaps… Above all, one can imagine Zelenka himself playing the violone part, enjoying making music with friends…

It often exhibits characteristics of impressionism, minimalism, or jazz. Sometimes it suggests certain tones or tonal centers, but above all it wants to be accessible. After the era of complex modernism, in which experiment occupied a central place, Craens believes that returning to a normal relationship with the audience is essential. Music may again be “just beautiful,” without ulterior motives. In this way, the composer strives to build bridges between his own individual expression, and his audience.

He is greatly appreciated by Anglo-Saxon organists, but his music has been long looked down on by French organists. Now, Jean-Baptiste Dupont gives us a taste of Reger’s music with this second volume of the composer’s complete organ works. Fraser • Eight concert pieces from ballets by Dmitri Shostakovich: The Golden Age, The Bolt, The Limpid Stream, trans. Feighin • Reminiscence on Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District, trans. Feighin • Eight Album Pieces: Romance from “The Limpid Stream,” Barrel Organ, The Wound-Up Doll, Small March, Dance Scherzando, Elegy from “La comédie humaine,” Spring Waltz from Michurin, Romance from the music to the film “The Gadfly,” trans. Fortunatov However rewardingly Dmitri Shostakovich endowed pianists with chamber music, Russian violinists felt somewhat neglected by their giant with his only late Sonata, Op. 134 of 1968. So, it seemed obvious to compose arrangements of works for violin and piano. Some of these have established themselves in concert life, but others, although of no lesser quality, have remained largely unknown. David Frühwirth started his training at the Mozarteum in Salzburg with Paul Roczek, Jürgen Geise, and Rugiero Ricci. He continued his studies in Lübeck with renowned pedagogue Zakhar Bron, where he graduated at 20 years old before Pinchas Zukerman invited him to New York to work on additional postgraduate diplomas. His partner on this disc, Ukrainian pianist Milana Chernyavska, has established herself as one of the leading pianists of our time. The legendary Alfred Brendel once commented, “Complete happiness is to listen to Milana Chernyavska perform.”

Paraty Marie Vermeulin: piano MESSIAEN: Eight Préludes • Vingt Regards • Esquisses d’oiseaux Olivier Messiaen contributed veritable monuments to the piano literature, and it is not for nothing that so many young pianists dedicate themselves to these works today. In December 2007 Marie Vermeulin won a magnificent Second Prize at the Olivier Messiaen Competition, following her brilliant studies at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Lyon and further studies with Lazar Berman. However, this was only the first step in her journey to explore all of the challenges of Messiaen’s work, in which Roger Muraro, the preeminent proponent of Messiaen’s works, has encouraged her.

Vie de Famille presents a series of snapshots in sound, inspired by behavior that seems familiar and at first sight, harmless. But suddenly, there are moments of madness; virtuoso explosions of a sort. The composer unrolls his story like a string of beads; thanks to his complete control of the trajectory, he leads us as though hypnotized into the hidden recesses of this composite and paradoxical work.

When Joseph Haydn arrived in London on January 2, 1791 at the age of 58, it was as a composer at the height of his powers who had already left an indelible mark on the piano sonata, string quartet, and symphonic genres. Once liberated by the death of his employer Prince Esterházy, he left for England almost immediately. He knew his stay could bring him international fame, and to achieve this he wrote with incredible frenzy, producing his final masterpieces in genres to which he would not return: symphonies, trios with piano, and the three London sonatas played here. Mathieu Dupouy plays an original fortepiano by Jakob Weimes (Prague, 1807).
