Established in 1987, the labels have released over 450 titles and champion the music of Australian composers and artists. The labels both receive wide international acclaim. ABC Classics comes to Allegro Classical via New Arts International.
ALLEGRO WELCOMES Cameo Classics P. 28 Cameo Classics was founded in 1973 by David Kent-Watson, who had built Indigo Sound Studios in Manchester with Bob Auger. Cameo Classics centered on recording unfairly neglected classical music on location, whereas the 24-track Indigo Sound Studios entertained the likes of Marc Bolan, Sad Café, and the Bay City Rollers, to name just a few. Cameo Classics now concentrates on recording the works of neglected British and Jewish German composers. To date, the label has premiered 108 compositions, and new recordings are always in the pipeline. Cameo Classics comes to Allegro Classical via Nimbus/Wyastone.

Paul Grabowsky Sextet The Bitter Suite Pianist, composer, arranger, and conductor Paul Grabowsky is one of Australia’s most distinguished artists. During the late ’70s he became prominent in the music scene in Melbourne, working in various jazz, theater, and cabaret projects. He lived and worked in Europe and the U.S. from 1980–85, performing with many jazz luminaries including Chet Baker, Art Farmer, and Johnny Griffin. Playing with a largely Sydney-based band, he has brought together some of the finest jazz musicians Australia has produced for this recording.

• This new CD presents one of the most concise collections of the actual sounds of politicians, statesmen, and entertainers of the war years, taken from Pathe newsreels, and vividly brings back the events and emotions of the day. • Brian Inglis joined the RAF in 1940, completing two tours of operations and achieving the rank of Squadron Leader. After demobilization he went to work for the Irish Times in Dublin. In 1953 he returned to England to work on The Spectator and was Editor from 1959 to 1962. • Inglis presented “All Our Yesterdays” on Granada Television for 10 years. From 1964 to 1970, the show covered the war years, and enjoyed its highest popularity. After the series ended Brian and the show’s producer, Bill Grundy, collaborated on a book about the years from Munich to the Berlin Air Lift, and from this book stemmed the idea of compiling the sounds that had evoked so many memories for millions of people. • Well-known in Argentina, Rudi Flores has often been called on for recording sessions and tours with Melingo, Gotan Project, and the like. • Flores’ tango music is irreversibly tinged with folk tradition and endowed with a singular, sporadically gypsy-sounding rhythmic base. It brings to mind the rustic, brash tango of early days, which was backed by the “obstinate working guitar” that Borges so liked. • A primal form dating back long before the bandoneon, glitter, and spectacular manifestations came into the scene, this is bare, embodied, blues-like tango. • The blues of the Rio de la Plata recalls everything it has absorbed in less than a century from the once close-by countryside and its numerous minstrels, myths, and folklores.
