Hallé Orchestra Sir Hamilton Harty: conductor Sir Malcolm Sargent: conductor Leslie Heward: conductor ˇ DVORÁK: Carnival Overture • Symphony No. 9 in E minor, Op. 95 • Nocturne in B major, Op. 40 • BRAHMS: Hungarian Dances 5 & 6 • ELGAR: Enigma Variations • Dream Children • The Dream of Gerontius • The Apostles (excerpt) • Salut d’amour, Op. 12 • BRUCH: Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor, Op. 26 • MENDELSSOHN: Symphony No. 4 in A, Op. 90 • Hebrides Overture, Op. 26 • SCHUBERT: Concerto in A minor • Rosamunde D. 797 • Overture to Rosamunde These recordings offer a fascinating insight into the playing of the Hallé before and during the Second World War, primarily with its Principal Conductor, Hamilton Harty. Harty’s recorded legacy with the Hallé stretches from early acoustic recordings made in 1920, through when he left Manchester in 1933. The Orchestra did not record again until 1941. It is important to remember the circumstances under which these recordings were made; works needed to be divided up into four to five minute sections, and tempos often reflect this fact. There were no “second chances,” no edits, and no opportunity to hear a finished take without destroying it!

These can sit alongside anything written in this genre.” — MusicWeb International Following their critically acclaimed debut recording of the complete string trios of Hans Gál and Hans Krása, which garnered a Gramophone Editor’s Choice, Ensemble Epomeo turns to music by Eastern European and Russian composers written in the latter half of the 20th century. Each work bears a distinct personal compositional stamp, providing for captivating listening and enlightening contrasts: the Polish Penderecki’s dramatic and lyrical String Trio of 1990–91, the Russian compositional giant Schnittke’s String Trio of 1985, the haunting Trio of the increasingly recognized and respected Weinberg from 1950, and the ever-enigmatic Hungarian Kurtág, whose continuously evolving signs, games, and messages represent a collection of highly individual miniatures. Sheva Collection presents the world premiere recording of Arvo Pärt’s cantata “L’Abbé Agathon,” scored for a soprano and eight cellos, written in 2004. The original score bears the dedication “pour Barbara Hendricks et l’Octuor de Violoncellos de Beauvais.” The protagonist of the narration is the Abbé Agathon, one of the “desert fathers,” a congregation of hermits living around the 4th century A.D. noted for their solitary lives and inspired by the teachings of the Gospel. They left numerous writings as a testimony of their ascetic conduct for later generations. Among these teachings is the legend of Agathon meeting the leper, from which Pärt took his text for this Cantata. The full libretto of the Cantata is included in the booklet.

The perfect lyricist, her brief poems each explore a single mood. The composers can therefore dedicate themselves to giving the fullest expression to a single poetic idea, all beautifully captured here.

Mozart’s well-known Piano Concerto K.482 is coupled here with the more unfamiliar Salieri Concerto written in 1773. Although Salieri is essentially known as an opera composer, he did write some fine instrumental and orchestral works. In fact, his only two piano concerti were both written in the same year and dedicated to a “signora nobile” of Vienna (probably an excellent amateur pianist). These concerti were neither intended nor prepared for publication. William Grant Naboré has prepared this beautiful performing edition, and plays Bruno Pietri’s Mozart cadenzas.

Allegro Classic Welcomes ABC Classics Sally Whitwell: piano GLASS: Opening • Metamorphosis I–V • Mad Rush • Dead Things • Wichita Vortex Sutra Philip Glass is that rarest of contemporary classical composers: a musician who has revolutionized the way art music is composed, and found a massive audience in doing so. As much a pop and cult phenomenon as he is a descendant of Beethoven, Glass’s music has been used in classic films like Koyanisqaatsi and The Hours. But it’s in his music for solo piano that the essence of his art is revealed. In this groundbreaking album from Australian pianist Sally Whitwell, the first of its kind ever to be recorded in Australia, all of Glass’s finest solo piano music is represented. The fabulous Australian Stuart & Sons piano has been deployed for this recording, its crystalline tones ideally suited to Glass’s hypnotically beautiful music.

According to Robert Schumann, Brahms was “a player of genius who can make the piano an orchestra,” and though he wrote only two piano concertos, both are masterpieces. Since winning the Gold Medal at the 1970 Chopin International Piano Competition, Garrick Ohlsson has established himself worldwide as a musician of magisterial interpretive and technical prowess. His repertoire ranges over the entire piano literature, and he has come to be noted for his masterly performances of the works of Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert as well as the Romantic repertoire, with more than 80 concertos at his command.

Allegro Classic Welcomes ABC Classics Australian World Orchestra Zubin Mehta: conductor STRAVINSKY: The Rite of Spring • MAHLER: Symphony No. 1 In 2012, conductor Alex Briger brought together Australia’s orchestral diaspora for the first time — musicians born, bred, or trained in Australia, now largely working overseas — and the Australian World Orchestra was born. Based out of Sydney, AWO is now an annual event, and this recording is the result of the orchestra working under Zubin Mehta in 2013. These performances take Briger’s original idea to a whole new level, achieving a quality that unites musical and artistic aspirations. Under Mehta, the AWO produces a richly colored reading of The Rite of Spring, heard here in a revelatory pairing with Mahler’s first symphony in its original five-movement version.

Emma Matthews: soprano Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Benjamin Northey: conductor COPLAND: Eight Poems of Emily Dickinson • Appalachian Spring (version for 13 instruments) Emma Matthews is one of Australia’s most acclaimed sopranos, and Copland’s Eight Poems of Emily Dickinson are the perfect vehicle for her technical brilliance. In this recording there is a wonderful sense of the humane, of vulnerability, and of exquisite tenderness, her expressive genius delivering these one-way conversations most convincingly. The orchestration for the Eight Poems of Emily Dickinson is in a chamber style calling for small orchestral forces, so Copland’s Appalachian Spring for 13 instruments proves the ideal coupling. This is a work that defines the essence of America in music: the wide open skies, the pioneering spirit, and the values of simplicity and directness.

This instrument was reconstructed from original casework and pipework by organ builders Goetze & Gwynn in 2007, and is a rare example of organs from this period in England. This is the first recording of this delightful 18th-century instrument.

Edward Woodall Naylor (1867–1934) was Organist of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, from 1898 until his death. Apart from his well-known anthem Vox dicentis: Clama and a few canticle settings, very little of his music is in the repertoire of choirs today, and this recording presents a wide range of unknown choral works. This is the first recording entirely devoted to his choral works, and, appropriately, is sung by the present-day choir of Emmanuel College, Cambridge directed by Richard Latham, in their first recording on the Regent label. In addition to Vox dicentis, the Morning and Evening canticles in A, and the Benedicte in G, this new recording contains seven first recordings, and forms an ideal introduction to the composer’s sacred choral works.

Thomas Trotter

Thomas Trotter, one of the world’s greatest organists, presents a program of music to mark the 250th anniversary of the organ in St Laurence’s Church, Ludlow — the church where the ashes of A.E. Housman, writer of A Shropshire Lad, are buried. With a specially-tailored program to showcase the historic stops by Snetzler, as well as the more recent additions in the 19th and 20th centuries, the performance includes Elgar’s monumental Sonata in G, Op. 28 and a stunning demonstration of supreme virtuosity in Nyman’s Fourths, Mostly. The DVD features a performance video of the program including footage of the church, Ludlow, and the surrounding countryside, and the music is accompanied by quotations from the works of A.E. Housman. In extra features Thomas Trotter talks about the music he performs on the recording, and Shaun Ward, Director of Music at St Laurence’s Church, gives a tour of the organ.

SCHUMANN: Drei gemischte Chöre nach Gedichten von Emanuel Geibel On January 5, 1848 Robert Schumann founded a mixed choral music society in Dresden. After only writing a cappella compositions for male voices throughout the year, he started writing compositions for mixed chorus from March 1849. The idea of creating a new genre inspired the composer, as well as his wife Clara. The compositions presented here are mostly results of this creative period.

Cello Concerto & Works for Cello & Piano CD: NIM 5916 Price Code: Q (SRP $15.99) Number of Discs: 1 Jewel Case, Box Lot 25

The latest work on this CD is the Cello Concerto in A minor, from 1850. In the worrying years leading to the composer’s death he was having trouble getting works published, but a welcome approach came in 1853 from the publishing house Breitkopf, with a fee of 20 Louis d’or for a few of Schumann’s latest pieces, including the cello concerto, which they particularly liked. The composer tantalizingly offered them a version with string quintet, and a piano reduction along with a full orchestral score, but the last two never materialized. Raphael Wallfisch was inspired by this intriguing concept, and asked distinguished Swiss composer Arthur Lilienthal to adapt the full score for strings. The result, heard on this recording, lends fresh clarity and lightness to the texture, allowing the soloist even more freedom, especially at the low dynamic levels the composer calls for. Raphael has played it with very small orchestras, often without conductor, which emphasizes the pure chamber qualities of this wonderful work.

Bold, passionate, urgent — Augusta Read Thomas writes music that is wholly and completely alive. The first two volumes of this recording series focused on orchestral and chamber/piano music, collecting performances by various ensembles. This third volume is something a bit different: a recording of a live 50th birthday concert presented by the New Haven Symphony Orchestra under the direction of William Boughton. One of the two large-scale works on the recording is also one of Thomas’s most recent (and was premiered on the concert), the dramatic Hemke Concerto “Prisms of Light” (2014). This concerto was commissioned as a retirement gift for legendary saxophonist and pedagogue Frederick L. Hemke by many of his students, past and present. The other large-scale composition is Absolute Ocean (2008), a song-cycle for soprano and orchestra with a significant obbligato harp part.

Eirik the Viking

Without a doubt, Frederic Chopin is the poet of the piano. With Beethoven, the piano already held a dominant position among musical instruments, but with Chopin it achieved poetic status. Chopin explored every possible genre for the piano; his work list includes a wide range of compositions (preludes, waltzes, mazurkas, polonaises, and more), as well as large-scale pieces like his two concertos for piano and orchestra, or complex and highly original pieces such as his four scherzos and his four ballades.

27

“Eirik the Viking” has been the stage name of Eirik Gjerdevik since his student days, and is also the name of his new CD, with a title track composed by Torstein Aagaard-Nilsen, with whom he has collaborated for years.

Holbrooke later adopted the German spelling of his name, and most of his works were published under that appellation, as were many of his articles and other publications. In 1893, when he was fifteen, Holbrooke’s father decided he had nothing more to teach him and entered him as a student at The Royal Academy of Music. There, he won many honors and wrote some fine music, despite finding himself not infrequently at loggerheads with his tutors. In 1900, after Augustus Manns gave the first performance of Holbrooke’s tone poem “The Raven” at one of his Saturday Afternoon Concerts at Crystal Palace, his career began to take off. From 1897 to 1899 pieces for solo piano, or violin and piano, flowed from his pen. However, it is not until we reach Op. 42 that we discover a really important piano work by Holbrooke: the set of Ten Rhapsodie-Etudes. Some of these are reminiscent of the sort of virtuoso studies produced by Henselt or Moscheles in the mid-19th century, but others are more contemporary in style.

William Havergal Brian was virtually self-taught in composition, and in the early 20th century began to make a name for himself. Some of his music was admired by Elgar, works of his were performed by conductors such as Henry Wood and Thomas Beecham, but the musical establishment — with the exception of his good friend Sir Granville Bantock — passed him by and his growing body of mature work remained almost entirely unknown and unperformed. With the death of Bantock in 1946, Brian lost his last advocate for performances of his music. Then, in the early 1950s, his work came to the attention of a young BBC music producer named Robert Simpson, who gradually brought about a growing number of performances (mostly in radio broadcasts), which began to initiate recognition of Brian’s achievement.

It is reported that the island of Sri Lanka, off the coast of India, was sending ambassadors to the Greek and Roman courts as early as the 1st century B.C. Reciprocal influences that scholars have detected between Indian and classical Greek art may lead us to speculate on a time when music of the Orient and the Occident were as one. Whatever their common origins, the respective worlds of Asian and Occidental music moved to opposite poles during the ensuing millennia. Nevertheless, Colonial expansion was bound to bring a cultural awakening in the course of time. From “fairy lands forlorn” to Mallarme’s brise marine, from Rousseau’s “noble savage” to Gauguin — these are but short steps.

Piano 21 Cyprien Katsaris: piano Academy of St. Martin in the Fields Sir Neville Marriner: conductor BEETHOVEN: Piano Concerto No. 5 (original) • Piano Concerto No. 5 for solo piano, arr. Katsaris (premiere)

Ludwig van BEETHOVEN

This CD sees Cyprien Katsaris and Sir Neville Marriner conducting the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields united in a performance of Beethoven’s Concerto No. 5, Op. 73. The title “Emperor” is suggestive of a powerful counter-offensive impulsion on the part of Beethoven — the composer was living in Vienna — in reaction to the depredations of the Napoleonic hordes. He actually started composing it in 1809, just at the time that Austria was preparing to wage war on Napoleon, which does much to explain the military tone of the Concerto. Familiar from a very young age with a vinyl recording of the “Emperor” Concerto by Vladimir Horowitz with the RCA Victor Symphony Orchestra conducted by Fritz Reiner, Cyprien Katsaris had always felt a degree of frustration regarding the orchestral passage. He was appalled not to find them in the piano score, hence his determination, at 55 years of age, to produce this transcription.

It required 70 minutes of music, uninterrupted by anyone talking over it (a composer’s dream). In 1988 I was commissioned by the Gate Theatre, Dublin, to compose and perform music for a production of Oscar Wilde’s play Salomé, directed by Steven Berkoff, which required a piano player onstage throughout the show, playing non-stop for almost two hours in a 1920s banquet-style setting. The track Mansard is a childhood memory room and comes from a five-CD set Babel, where each track corresponds to a room or place in an imagined Tower City.”

Britain witnessed four coronations in the 20th century. The 11 marches recorded here display an excitement and grandeur appropriate to an important state and religious occasion, and highlight some of the finest ceremonial music composed in the 20th century. Many composers were either commissioned or inspired to commemorate these events, ranging from the ever-popular Elgar and Walton to the less familiar Alexander Mackenzie and Percy Godfrey. Bax, Bliss, and Sousa also caught the spirit of the moment with their legendary marches. The newly formed London Symphonic Concert Band consists of seasoned, experienced players who have played for years in British orchestras and relish the chance to record repertoire that they obviously enjoy performing. Upcoming Review on BBC Radio 3. CD of the Week on Classic FM, with a track played each day of the week. Review Copies sent to Gramophone, International Record Review, BBC Music Magazine, and military magazines.

Crossing Waves: British Works for Solo Harp

Keziah Thomas issues her first solo album for Discovery Music and Vision with works by Sir Malcolm Arnold, Sally Beamish, Andy Scott, Huw Watkins, James Young and Benjamin Britten. Arnold’s Fantasy for Harp, Op. 117 was commissioned for harpist Osian Ellis, who was also the inspiration for Britten’s Suite for Harp. Sally Beamish’s inspiration for Awuya is unusual in that it celebrates the medical research into the African Sleeping Sickness undertaken by Professor Keith Vickerman, and was commissioned by him. Beamish took inspiration from African drumming, pentatonic music for Central African harp, and a haunting lullaby sung by the tribe devastated by the disease. Andy Scott composed Crossing Waves as a commission from Keziah, inspired by the epic journey taken by Roz Savage, who rowed solo across the Atlantic Ocean in 2005. Huw Watkins’ Suite was commissioned by the Presteigne Music Festival, and premiered in 2006. Keziah commissioned James Young to write a work to commemorate the year 2012, which not only saw the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee but also the Olympics held in London.

Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Christopher Gunning: conductor GUNNING: Symphony No. 6 • Night Voyage • Symphony No. 7 After his Fifth Symphony, Christopher Gunning felt the need to tackle something on an altogether smaller scale; something simpler, more direct, clearer in its orchestration, and in a way more “classical” than its predecessors. With his Sixth Symphony, he returned to the idea of a single span incorporating several sub-sections, a form which he had already explored in his First, Third, and Fourth Symphonies. As a result, the work feels more like a tone-poem than a conventional symphony. Night Voyage is a sea piece, and was born on a rainy evening standing by the Mersey River. A patch of orange lit the darkening sky and seabirds called mournfully as he watched a large grey freighter slipping majestically out to sea. The result is a tone poem that has obvious parallels with life, depicting a journey through an emotional crisis to a resolution of sorts. The theme of journeying is carried through to his Seventh Symphony. Like the Sixth, the music is continuous but this time falls into six main sections, or “phases,” all founded in various ways on the rising whole-tone scale heard at the very start. This affects the harmonic language, but the Seventh is also the most directly tonal of all of Gunning’s recent pieces.

Incandescent has two meanings: an intense glow, which can generate colors, or “being full of high emotion and passion.” Beethoven described the guitar as “an orchestra at your fingertips” because of the many different colors that can be achieved while playing it. The music on this album displays the guitar’s abundant colors and nuances, and is highly expressive. This new CD is sure to delight listeners with its enchanting mix of well-known guitar works and new compositions.

Choral Works

Symphony No. 1 in D major “Titan”

KODÁLY: St. Gregory’s day • King Ladislaus’ men or Magyars and Germans • Whitsuntide • Ode to Franz Liszt (words by Mihály Vörösmarty) • The Te Deum of Sándor Sík • Jesus and the traders (words by St. John 2.13) • The aged (words by Sándor Weöres) • Transylvanian lament • Mátra pictures On December 1, 1924, Zoltán Kodály’s Psalmus Hungaricus was performed for the first time in a version that also featured a children’s choir. This was a significant turning point in his career; though he had already composed choral works, from 1925 choral music became the central genre of his oeuvre.

MAHLER: Symphony No. 1 in D major “Titan” Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 originally consisted of five movements, but Mahler made many major revisions until the piece reached its definitive four-movement form. However, a subsequent fivemovement version is still in existence. The Blumine movement of this version was inserted as the second movement in the final version, and it is in this form that Zoltán Kocsis conducted the piece on this CD.

Ambrosian Chants for Epiphany

Post-Tridentine Gregorian Chant in Hungary

The city of Milan traces its liturgical music back to the doctor of the church, Saint Ambrose. The Ambrosian liturgy is a sister to the Roman, with many common but many differing traits.

35

In the mid-16th century came a turning point for Gregorian chant in Europe. Although the Synod of Trent dealt with music hardly at all, it established uniform liturgical texts for the continent. These dated back to an old tradition, and were not obligatory for churches, yet they were adopted sooner or later practically everywhere.

Cantare con silenzio

SCELSI: Maknongan • Pwyll • Hyxos • Quays • Tetratkys • Maknongan Roberto Fabbriciani has enjoyed a long musical career, always in search of new instrumental possibilities, new ways of expression, and unusual horizons in sound. His collaboration with Giacinto Scelsi dates from the 1960s, when they met in Rome at the festival Nuova Consonanza. From that time, Roberto has been fascinated by the language and poetics of Scelsi, and has interpreted all his flute works at different international festivals.

SCIARRINO: Cantare con silenzio • Berceuse • Libro notturno delle voci The three works by Salvatore Sciarrino on this CD are from live performances in Rome (2007) and Tokyo (2012). By chance, their date of composition creates a kind of numerical rhyme (1969, 1999, 2009).

Delitiae Testudinis Vol. 2

The New Bach Image

The second part of the most important work by Esaias Reusner, Delitiae Testudinis, a published collection of solo lute suites in Brzeg in 1667. For this recording Paul Beier played a lute by Stephen Gottlieb (1945–2014), a great luthier who recently died.

36

In 1982, an extremely interesting little book appeared, published by Rusconi, entitled La nuova immagine di J.S. Bach (“The New Image of Bach”), written by a brilliant author. Piero Buscaroli honored the tercentenary of Bach’s birth with his powerful biography, which is still considered a cornerstone of Bach literature in Italian.

This new recording of the ever-popular Misa Criolla was made to mark the 50th anniversary of its creation in 1964. It’s a sparkling, genuinely Latino version, reminiscent of the original recordings. In this vibrant new edition Ramirez’s popular mass is embedded in the 17th- and 18th-century vespers, villancicos, and hymns, all examples of spontaneous expressions of popular religion and folk culture. Ramirez’s composition indeed draws upon an ancient tradition of popular devotion and is deeply rooted in Latin America’s folk music. Surprisingly, no new recorded versions of any importance have seen the light since the early nineties!
