Sarah Tynan: soprano Jeremy Ovenden: tenor Matthew Brook: bass-baritone Handel and Haydn Society Harry Christophers: conductor HAYDN: The Creation Inspired by Haydn’s trips to England, where he first heard Handel’s oratorios, The Creation is widely considered the composer’s crowning masterpiece. Set for three vocal soloists, four-part chorus, and large orchestra, there seems little doubt that Haydn wanted a big sound (by the standard of his day). Based on both the biblical Genesis and Milton’s Paradise Lost, the oratorio was premiered in the U.S. by the Handel and Haydn Society in 1819. One of America’s oldest continuously performing arts organizations, Handel and Haydn Society celebrated its bicentennial season in 2014/15. Harry Christophers has been Artistic Director since 2008. CuGate Classics Label Feature
DJANSUG KAKHIDZE My Father, My Mentor, My Friend My father Djansug was quite a rigid person, concerning both musical and human rules. He followed his own criteria and had no problems to give voice to it. When he once told some singers they were bad they were upset. And then, after many years, they confessed he was right and were grateful for this lesson. Same strict ethics he kept in private life, with a very plain concept, of what was wrong or right. Betrayal? Very evil. Debts? Unimaginable. Speaking ill behind somebody’s back? Unforgivable. His agenda was unmistakably clear.
Knowing this it was obvious that he was my biggest critic. He was honest but always constructive and it helped me as it had helped the singers he criticized. As he had an excellent sense of taste I mostly followed his advice. Maybe he could not always recommend how to orchestrate or which harmony to chose, but when it was about structure and form – he was in his element. And his proposals how to bring musical ideas on to paper became indispensable to me. My father sang, he danced and played instruments – he was like a mosaic consisting of many facets. His way of composing was polyphonic – this was why he could compose songs with such an ease. And just like Bernstein he did not differ between serious and light music, provided there was true content in it. This was his credo. My father left the Georgian State Symphony Orchestra, as he and the new power did no longer pull together. Exactly at that time, father’s close German friend Memo Rhein made a contact with SONY. The two men just had realized their mutual vision of a state-of-the-art concert hall, which resulted in the new Music Center, and Memo kept on helping to make it a success story. He negotiated an agreement with SONY which guaranteed a significant number of recordings for the years to come. As a result Djansug collected the best musicians that were available and founded the Tbilisi Symphony Orchestra.

It was during this time when he began to ruin his health, regardless and without any compromise. In summer 1997 he had to undergo a bypass operation. His doctors there warned him that his remaining life time might be limited if he would proceed with the old pattern. Their forecast did not expand more than five years since his life by travelling on tour, plus the tight schedule of concerts and rehearsals would take a toll on him. But who could stop a workaholic? He was firmly determined to fulfill what he would call his mission. It is true – my father was never ever a man for the armchair. He was a candle burning on both sides instead and he was very clear about the consequences. So he did it his way. For all of us he left behind, it is some consolation that he will survive in his art. The Djansug Kakhidze Legacy therefore is to honour the amount of his artistry and I am proud to assume the patronage for all releases still to come. By Vakhtang Kakhidze

Simon Johnson: organ of St. Paul’s Cathedral, London HOLST: The Planets • The St. Paul’s Suite “Fantastic performance … the playing sparkles.” — International Record Review “Spine-tinglingly sublime.” — Gramophone One of the most staggering organ recordings ever made! Simon Johnson was originally skeptical when Priory’s Callum Ross suggested that The Planets would make an ideal recording in the vast acoustics of St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. The discovery of Peter Sykes’ brilliant arrangement answered all doubts, and so he set about learning this incredible score. The organ was, of course, a willing partner and the notorious acoustic — so often the cause of debate in relation to musical performances — seems to help project the scale and metaphysical properties of Holst’s original conception in a positive and dramatic way. An organ recording not to be missed!

This CD is the first recording of the new William Drake organ in the OBE Chapel (2012), his last complete new instrument. The integrity of the new organ stems from Drake’s own cosmopolitan eclecticism: a recipient of the German Certificate of Master Organ Builder, his opus list owes as much to Teutonic rigor as to English organs of the 18th and early 19th centuries. At the time of the recording, Timothy Wakerell was Assistant Organist at St. Paul’s but is now Assistant Organist at New College, Oxford, and is considered one of the finest organists of his generation.

Cyprien Katsaris Presents Katrin Hagen CD: P21 53 Price Code: S (SRP $18.99) Number of Discs: 1 Digipak, Box Lot 30 d
On this recording, Cyprien Katsaris presents young German-Luxembourg clarinetist Katrin Hagen. In 1891, Johannes Brahms was so moved at hearing clarinetist Richard Mühlfeld play the Mozart and Weber concertos that he decided to compose a trio and a quintet with strings for the instrument, followed in 1894 by his two Sonatas for Clarinet (or Viola) and Piano, Op. 120; they were to be his last instrumental works. Like Brahms, Camille Saint-Saëns wrote his Sonata for Clarinet, Op. 167 just a few months prior to his death. This Sonata, dedicated to Auguste Périer — professor at the Conservatoire and soloist in the Opéra Comique Orchestra — makes wondrous use of every last resource of the clarinet. A virtuoso musician who helped popularize the works of Mozart and Beethoven, Finnish clarinetist Bernhard Henrik Crusell composed a host of chamber works chiefly for the clarinet. His seven concertante works include three clarinet concertos. Concerto No. 3 in B flat major, Op. 11 (1807?) starts with two movements similar in style to Weber and Mozart, while the third movement Alla Polacca is a distinct nod towards the finale Rondo alla Polacca of Beethoven’s Triple Concerto.

This verdict may serve to explain the neglect Roothan’s music suffered during his lifetime. However, the general indifference it has encountered subsequently is unfathomable. It is to be hoped that this Lyrita release, which echoes the enterprise of the same label’s pioneering 1976 studio recording of the First Symphony, will reawaken interest in this key figure of early 20th century British music.

Nimbus Alliance Vladimir Feltsman: piano SCHUBERT: Sonata in A major, D. 664 • 12 Grätzer Walzer, D. 924 • Sonata in B flat major, D. 960 After charting four albums simultaneously on Billboard’s Traditional Classical Albums chart last year, eminent pianist Vladimir Feltsman returns with a disc dedicated to Schubert. He has been described as the last “classical” and first “romantic” composer, but it is really impossible to pin a meaningful label on Schubert. He was and still is a very special case: a lonely figure in musical history and a dreamer who brought into music a degree of intimacy, despair, hope, and disappointment previously unknown. Schubert was a sincere, shy, and vulnerable man (though he did not lack confidence in himself as an artist), and his personality is clearly reflected in his music.

The Sonatas
Niek de Groot is a leading classical double-bassist. In 2010 he found the supreme instrument to give his style a voice: the Amati double bass made in Cremona, 1680. Niek has been given the lifelong privilege to play this famous — and only remaining! — double bass from that era.

This casts new light on old masters in a way that is constantly entertaining, and a wonder to behold. Born in Australia, Frederick Septimus Kelly attended Eton College from the age of 12, where his talents both as an oarsman and as a musician were first recognized. The new release from EM Records features the world premiere recording of his Sonata in G major, alongside two other works composed in 1915. The Second Sonata by Arnold Bax was written as a direct response to the First World War, and the influence of contemporary events can be heard in the work’s overall dark coloration and the intensity of its textures. By contrast, Arthur Somervell’s Two Conversations about Bach displays a lighter aspect: although short, the pieces display a beauty of craftsmanship and elegance of construction that makes them most compelling.

With a well-established reputation in orchestral writing, following his recent opera Charlotte, Marc-André Dalbavie further demonstrates his great talent for vocal writing with three works written for countertenor. The piece Sonnets was inspired by the poetry of Louise Labbé, Sextine-Cyclus is based on texts by 13th-century French troubadours, and Three Popular Songs is a tribute to HERMESensemble Claude Debussy’s Images pour orchestre. Young Ukrainian countertenor Yuriy Henderickx: composer, conductor Mynenko, in his first recitalWim recording, performs the works with full orchestra, while celebrated French countertenor Jean-Paul Fouchécourt interprets HENDERICKX: Nada Brahma • On the Road • Atlantic Wall Sextine-Cyclus, which he had premiered in France.
HERMESensemble
In Sanskrit, “Nada Brahma” literally means “God is Sound.” It is also the name of the third part of the Tantric Cycle, a composition series based on Eastern philosophy and Buddhism, written by Wim Henderickx between 2004 and 2010. In this work the instruments represent the earthly dimension, whereas the electronics refer to the cosmos. “On the Road” was inspired by Jack Kerouac’s autobiographical novel from 1957. The electronics embroider a smooth carpet of sound, above which the bass flute evokes an Asian melody. “Atlantic Wall” is a lyrical poem about the freedom of the elements, observed from a concrete prison. The electronics merge with the sounds of acoustic instruments, exploring the concepts of sound, resonance, and voice as well as the underlying natural forces of water and fire. The work looks back on war in an introspective manner.

Through the lens of the post-modern era, he embraces many of the modal and tonal techniques of Western music to inform his own artistry. Performers and audiences alike favorably regard his compositional style for its idiomatic expression and freshness of voice. This is the first recoding entirely devoted to Davison’s choral music, and is sung by the renowned choir of Wells Cathedral conducted by Matthew Owens. A natural question arises from the rich iconography of stringed, wind, or percussion ensembles and chant in the Middle Ages: how did a lute performer behave when facing a medieval piece on its own, given that this music was not written for any particular instrument? It is almost impossible to assert that the medieval musician did not face this repertoire as a soloist, but all the iconographic evidence seems to indicate that both collective and soloist interpretation were possible.
