Nail welcomes new Granada

pg 4–5

Founded in 1994, Tampa, FL’s New Granada Records is home to several of Central Florida’s most celebrated bands (Candy Bars, King of Spain, Zillionaire, The Dark Romantics) and also includes acts from Austin, TX (New Roman Times) and Seattle, WA (Jen Wood). Releases have garnered praise on a national level from Pitchfork, Magnet, NPR, Under the Radar, Stereogum, and more.

Nail welcomes 500 Records pg 10 Established in 2005, 500 Records began as a music collective with the goal of helping local artists and bands reach more listeners. Over the last three years, the label has promoted and released records in a variety of formats, always striving to bring good music to good people. 500 Records comes to NAIL via Three Ring Records (launching next month).

Nail welcomes tender loving empire pg 28–29 Portland’s Jared & Brianne Mees conceived Tender Loving Empire in 2005, as a sort of DIY melting pot. They needed a means to put out Jared’s eponymous solo project in addition to the books, comics, and t-shirts their friends were making, but had no means of selling. In 2007, after building a successful online following, they opened the Tender Loving Empire store, a tiny brick & mortar operation that has since grown to feature the work of 250 different local crafters, designers, fine artists, and musicians as well as a gallery and a custom silk-screening operation. The record label has continued to sign hard-touring, off-kilter folk and rock acts from all over the US, as well as hosting regular showcases at SXSW and MusicFest NW.

Nail welcomes REV DISTRIBUTION

pg 35–44

Rev Distribution began with the intent to independently distribute Revelation Records titles along with releases from friends’ punk and hardcore labels. Within a few years the roster grew, and in addition to labels in the punk/hardcore scene, Rev Distribution has expanded to carry a wider variety of music, from punk and indie rock to metal. Rev Distribution is proud to team up with NAIL to bring you the best in independent music! For more info on Rev Distro labels, see pg 35.

New Roman Times On the Sleeve

Genre: Alt Rock Label: New Granada Records CD: NGR 17 Price Code: I (SRP $10.99) Number of Discs: 1 Jewel Case; Box Lot 25 Street Date: 7/14/2009 U.S. ORDERS ONLY

With a flair for ’80s-inspired dark-wave, this Austin indie quartet follows up their debut dance/rock LP with the focused, driving, hook-filled On the Sleeve. Few newmillennium acts seem to have gotten the balance of familiar ’80s-club emotional throb and original contemporary energy just right, but this Austin-by-way-of-Orlando quartet is one of ‘em. Songs from On the Sleeve sacrifice neither groove nor heft to their quest for resonant quality songcraft. There’s an earnestness to their tunes that defies the over-it, overly detached posturing of so much danceable rock, which pairs the cool with an engaging humanity. Also, of course, they kill it.

Check out The Tenant, the new band headed by former Summerbirds in the Cellar frontman Brad Register. His new band brings pure melodic strength to the fore with the kind of crisp, ’60s-influenced pop that the French adore (for good reason). The Tenant’s debut is a unique multi-format release, consisting of the six-song CDEP Is Listening (recorded in Athens with friend/musician/producer/contributor Andy LeMaster of Now It’s Overhead) and the two-song 7” Visitors (recorded/produced in Lakeland, FL by Aaron Marsh of Copeland). With a split homebase (Austin & Orlando), the band plans to take advantage of its situation by playing shows in and around each city, as well as a future tour to support this release.

FINDS YOU IN LOVE Selling Points

• RIYL: Cat Power, Ida, Low, Julie Doiron. • Jen Wood’s first full-length in eight years! • Jen sings on the Postal Service singles “Such Great Heights” and “Nothing Better,” as well as contributing vocals to releases by Black Heart Procession, Joan of Arc, and Rosie Thomas. • Previous work includes releases on Tree Records (EP and Post Marked Stamps 7” series). • Team Clermont has been hired to run media campaign to coincide with street date.

Overview

Originally half of the mid-’90s duo Tattle Tale, Jen Wood went on to record and release a string of albums, EPs, and singles as a prolific singer/songwriter in her own right. Known for her delicate and gorgeous voice, she has appeared on some very high-profile releases including the Postal Service’s landmark 2002 album Give Up, singing the duet “Nothing Better” with Ben Gibbard as well as providing the backing harmonies for the single “Such Great Heights.” Additional vocal appearances include records by Jeremy Enigk, Black Heart Procession, Rosie Thomas, and Joan of Arc. Several years in the making, Finds You In Love is the perfect storm that results from a gifted singer-songwriter writing the best songs of her career, a dynamic band, and the right producer working together and trusting one another to create a powerful and special album.

Press Quotes

“For Jen Wood, SXSW is a celebration. The Seattle-based chanteuse’s latest album, Finds You in Love, took three years to write and record … the disc delves into dark places in the human mind and the past, but captures a more mature and optimistic Wood.” — AOL Spinner

Major Organ and the Adding Machine is an Elephant 6 supergroup led by the elusive and possibly fictional Major Organ. The liner notes of Major Organ and the Adding Machine, the band’s debut album, leave it a mystery as to who is officially featured, and when performing live on the Holiday Surprise Tour, the members of the band wore paper masks to maintain anonymity. It is believed that the main contributors are Jeff Mangum, Julian Koster, and Kevin Barnes, whose vocals are most obviously present on the album, but a number of other Elephant 6 musicians are believed to have contributed too, including other members of Olivia Tremor Control, Elf Power, and Of Montreal. This expanded version of the album includes a DVD of the accompanying film packed with new bonus videos, including Neutral Milk Hotel live at the Knitting Factory, a new Apples In Stereo video, live show footage from Hawk and a Hacksaw, and more.

Overview

Elf Power formed in 1994 and, over the last 16 years, has released ten albums, two EPs, and a handful of singles while also touring America, Europe, and Japan. The Athens pioneers have now readied their tenth studio album for release—a self-titled, dozen-song sonic totem that represents the group’s spiritual endurance and continued relevance as the flagship band of the celebrated psych-rock scene they helped forge over a decade and a half ago. The new record conveys a unique synthesis of expansion and space as deft rhythmic interplay, thoughtful instrumental flourishes, and subtle hands at the mixingboard all contribute to the Elves’ lithe, powerful folk-rock and the frank, beautiful lyrical exposition that’s to be expected from head songwriter Andrew Rieger.

Equally unadorned, simple, and honest, the selftitled album is a labor of love that unites these friends and musical kindred spirits. Colleen and Paul are singers, songwriters, and guitarists with unique creative visions. She’s a highly imaginative wordsmith; he’s a musical wizard with an intuitive flair for melody. Genre: Alt Rock/Folk Label: Hush Records CD: HSH 96 Price Code: O (SRP $13.99) Number of Discs: 1 Eco Wallet; Box Lot 30 Street Date: 9/14/10 U.S. ORDERS ONLY

Kele Goodwin has spent his life in three places: in Alaska, on the Navajo Nation, and in the misty Pacific Northwest. His debut album Hymns was produced by Sean Ogilvie of Musée Méchanique and features guest performances from Laura Gibson, Alela Diane, Sean Ogilvie, Douglas Jenkins (Portland Cello Project), and many others. The album is bursting with an undeniable timelessness and beauty. Goodwin’s silvery voice and immaculate fingerpicking give the songs a sturdy spine, while Ogilvie’s tasteful production bathes the tracks in evocative and subtly mysterious atmosphere.

Selling Points

• RIYL: Bon Iver, Andrew Bird, Owen Pallet, Nils Frahm. • Will play dates in Fall 2010 and begin touring with a band in Spring 2011. • Featured in the last season of Grey’s Anatomy. • Has released records on prestigious labels Bella Union, Type, Western Vinyl, and Erased Tapes. • An adopted member of the Danish ensemble Efterklang, Broderick has recorded and/or toured with Horse Feathers, M. Ward, She & Him, Norfolk & Western, and Laura Gibson. • Has received rapturous acclaim from the London Times, NPR, Mojo, and NME. • In-house PR by Hush Records.

Overview

After completing work on the elaborate forthcoming follow-up to his vocal debut, Home, musician/composer Peter Broderick went into the studio with the goal of recording and mixing an album in one day live to 2” tape, with no overdubs or punch-ins—only voice, piano, and guitar. How They Are is this record. Known as a “stop-gap” release in waning industry terms, the album sheds the tossed-off connotation, revealing something altogether sublime in its austerity and candor. This is not lite Broderick. This is essential Broderick.

Selling Points

• RIYL: Happy Apple, Alasnoaxis, The Bad Plus, Quasi, Gruvis Malt. • Third full-length album by the Northwest’s up-andcoming not-jazz/not-not-jazz quintet • Features guitarist Timothy Young (Wayne Horvitz, Thruster!, The Youngs). • West Coast tour in August and December 2010; national tour in Spring 2011. • Fully Altered Media will handle national press, syndicated radio, and national tour press.

Overview

With Observatories, Blue Cranes have weathered growth spurts to become the eloquent ensemble they have strived to be for the past three years. Walking a thin line between prog-jazz improvisation and indie rock catchiness, Blue Cranes have arrived at a unique spot, making exploration seem like the most enjoyable process around. The songs and performances on Observatories are all about the rewards of collective articulation, leveraging exquisite individual playing into a seamless whole sound. Blue Cranes strike a balance between genteel and rambunctious, the latter showing its face in unexpected explosions of sound throughout Observatories. The wide emotional palette of this release is apparent through the intricate pounding intro of “Richie Bros.” and its dreamy, dissonant melody; the bittersweet anthem “Grandpa’s Hands,” which boasts a luminous theme echoing Steve Reich; and the evocative lament “Broken Windmills,” which could easily snuggle up to an Ornette Coleman ballad. The band may be a left-of-center instrumental outfit, but their book has lots of room for old-fashioned beauty.

Press Quotes

“Like some David Lynch-style basement jazz hallucination, Blue Cranes’ music is the type of experimental, sometimes insane, but always invigorating experience that’s hard to shake.” — Willamette Week

WILLIAM PARKER I PLAN TO STAY A BELIEVER: THE INSIDE SONGS OF CURTIS MAYFIELD Selling Points

• RIYL: Curtis Mayfield, Sun Ra Arkestra. • I Plan To Stay A Believer is the definitive document of William Parker’s The Inside Songs of Curtis Mayfield project, comprised of exuberant concert recordings spanning the past decade. • The project features interpolations of the mighty songbook of R&B/soul music legend Curtis Mayfield by an equally mighty eight-piece band, occasionally accompanied by highly inspired choirs. • Service/promotion to national press/e-media, targeted regional press, and college/non-commercial radio by Improvised Communications. • Ads with All About Jazz-New York, Signal To Noise, and Point of Departure.

Overview

Bassist/composer William Parker is among the most active and highly regarded musicians performing today. The Inside Songs of Curtis Mayfield is the first project in his 35-year career devoted to the music of another composer: here interpolating the mighty Mayfield songbook with an equally mighty eight-piece band. Curtis Mayfield was a prophet, a preacher, a revolutionary, a humanist, and a griot—words that all apply to Parker himself. I Plan To Stay A Believer is the definitive document of this project, with fully exuberant performances of each piece drawn from concert recordings spanning the past decade. Included are two pieces from the group’s very first 2001 performance in Paris with a chorus of 90 children, and another pair from New York in 2008 that feature a full gospel choir.

“The Arkestra did use improvisation as their main compositional tool, but Ra’s hand can be glimpsed in the restrained use of such strange sound combinations. The Arkestra is certainly exploring, but they are being guided. COVER STICKER:

Prolific ambient innovator Steve Roach teams with Ph.D. shamanic practitioner/musician Mark Seelig to create a long-form piece of space-opening sound magic. Like many fragrant and beautiful night-blooming plants that are host to mind-altering qualities, this 70-minute environment slowly blooms outwards on a bed of drones and Mark’s vocal harmonic, throat and Tuva-style Overtoning.

A slow-motion magical blend is created in this mist-filled meditative space, with subterranean rhythmic heartbeats swelling up from the harmonic soil, gently urging the Nightbloom to increase its potency and allure. Steve Roach and Mark Seelig are no strangers to exploring the realms of altered musical states together; they have collaborated with shamanic percussionist Byron Metcalf on Mantram, Nada Terma, Disciple, and Wachuma’s Wave. This release settles into the more sustained oceanic qualities of these well-received releases. Slow down, breathe deep, hear, and feel the Nightbloom occur.

This is the first attempt to gather the US history of African-American & Jewish relations into a selective pop musical guide. The historical, political, spiritual, economic, and cultural connections between AfricanAmericans and Jewish-Americans have long been a subject of rigorous attention. Books and articles focusing on the musical landscapes shared by African-Americans and Jews have been equally numerous; indeed, most general histories of American Popular Music even turn on the synergies of African-American & Jewish creativity, influence, and exchange, be it Tin Pan Alley, Klezmer, the Yiddish Theater, jazz, or R&B.

Yet, for all this attention, there has yet to be a one-stop musical source of evidence and exploration, a single CD release that succinctly and selectively gathers together the key songs that speak to the vibrant and often dazzling musical back-and-forth between the two communities. This collection explores the myriad ways Jews and African-Americans have coalesced, clashed, mobilized, and struggled with each other through a century’s worth of extraordinary and fascinating musical performance that finds Jews performing AfricanAmerican music and African-Americans performing Jewish music, and appealing to Jewish audiences. It moves from early performers like Slim Galliard singing about bagels and matzoh balls and Cab Calloway mixing Yiddish into his hepcat dictionary of jive, to Sonny Berman making ’40s bebop he called ‘’Beautiful Jewish Music,” Johnny Mathis singing “Kol Nidre,” and Aretha Franklin doing a ’60s take on “Swanee.” Indeed, while much scholarly and media ink has been devoted to the Jewish attraction to African-American music, this anthology—while surely demonstrating that—will also focus on demonstrating the long history of African-American interest in Jewish musical practice, performance, and composition.

Powerful and cathartic, Arab On Radar is a unique, unprecedented brand of psycho-neurological terrorism. The strain introduced on Soak The Saddle is the most dangerous: more free, alive, and unrooted, with any semblance to daddy’s rock ‘n’ roll long gone. Completing what began in 1998 with the single Tragic Hero—followed by the Fallen Hero EP in 2005—Arising Hero is the third and final part of the trilogy. The Hero saga is a first-person account of an unnamed soldier fighting an unknown war. Part one found him observing the sorrow and destruction around him. The second chapter found him called to arms once again, seemingly resigned to face his fate in the face of an overwhelming enemy. Finally, 12 years after the start of the saga, Funker Vogt tells the final fate of the Hero character. Will he find peace, or redemption? Recorded in drummer Nick Hennies’ spare room by longtime trusted engineer and friend Alex Keller and meticulously mixed by the band, Help Me Name Melody is an album brimming with tunes, noises, intensity, sadness, and humor. A remarkably mature and accomplished band with an unwavering excitement and pioneering spirit, The Weird Weeds present their best album to date. Much like the songs on Help Me Name Melody that mysteriously lack titles, The Weird Weeds’ music continues to be enigmatic and resistant to being conveniently named.

Hailing from the town of Scarborough, on England’s east coast, Failsafe For Tomorrow’s second release features six high-energy, mosh-your-heart-out tracks that expertly weave between catchy sing-along pop-punk, melodic hardcore, and even a slick metal anthem complete with heavy chugging guitars, growling vocals, and a classic metal guitar solo! With combined project sales well into the millions, David Baker has so many accomplishments that they could not all be listed. His long-term relationship with Shirley Horn recording for Verve earned a Grammy, and he traveled the world over in the line of duty. Baker is one of the masters of the art of recording—many people can do it, but very few can do it with the dedication and distinction that he has consistently achieved over the last three decades. The Pitamaha project, recorded on location in various parts of Bali, is an attempt to offer the listener a totally non-scholarly approach to some of the country’s music. Here you will find no explanations of modes, notation, or rhythms. The music contained within is an example of what one might find if he were ambling about the countryside on any given day.

Genre: Punk Label: Latest Flame Records CD: LTF 29 Price Code: N (SRP $12.99) Number of Discs: 1 Digipak; Box Lot 30 Street Date: 9/14/10 U.S. ORDERS ONLY

Sleeper is a taut, staccato blast of punk/rock from Bloomington “power trio” Waxeater. On this, their debut full-length, Waxeater splits the difference between an early ’80s PIL/Birthday Party-influenced sound and the more modern takes of bands like Future of the Left and the defunct Refused. In the twists and turns of Sleeper, Waxeater merges their influences to create a unique sound. “Yeah, Well...” is the album highlight, showcasing the band at their best. The song builds from Jeremy Mill’s snaking bass line and Rob Montage’s equally hypnotic guitars & vocals into a breakdown of drums, bass, and guitar that shatters glass onto the floor and brings the hammer down on what’s left of the pieces.

“Unlike the standard, American Apparel-wearing ironicfacial-hair room of hipsters, the room was full of geeks, nerds, dweebs, and spazzes, and they’re way more fun than hipsters. I felt at home with the less self-conscious, less fashion-conscious group of non-hipsters. They danced, had fun, and never seemed to over think any of their actions. That is exactly the philosophy Peelander-Z teaches—‘don’t think, just have fun.’ And fun was had.” — NY Press “Peelander-Z is known to dive offstage, jump and dangle from balconies, engage in human bowling, encourage mad audience participation, and force their instruments on unsuspecting spectators. Peelander-Z’s costumes—which they claim are not costumes but in fact their alien skin— are of a Power Rangers-meet-Earth Girls Are Easy sort of aesthetic, and their last show at Exit/In was, without a doubt, one of the most fun and novel live-music affairs I’ve attended in my many years of live-music affair attendance.” — Nashville Scene

Overview

Produced by The Decemberists’ Chris Funk, the debut album from Portland’s Y La Bamba blends breathtaking three-part harmonies, reverb-laden guitars, and a songbook written in both English and Spanish by sixfoot tall, tattooed lead songstress Luzelena Mendoza. The result is a rich, fully realized, cutting-edge indie rock record that hearkens back to the days of 78s and Victrola speakers while proudly bearing its Mexican influences.

Press Quotes

Marc Ribot is widely recognized as one of the great guitar originals—his distinctively edgy and impassioned sound can recently be found on albums by such diverse musicians as Robert Plant/Alison Krauss, Norah Jones, Allen Toussaint, McCoy Tyner, Marianne Faithful, John Zorn, and The Black Keys. Silent Movies finds Ribot taking another surprising step in a career filled with unexpected turns. Almost a polar opposite of his last release, Party Intellectuals, Silent Movies is mostly filled with his gorgeously contemplative compositions performed solo, with minimal overdubs. The album reflects Ribot’s fascination with movies and contains pieces intended to function as music for films: some adaptations of music he has written for film, some for movies that he scored that were never released, some for classic silent films that he scored for his own amusement, and some for films of his own imagination.

Apex is a blazing all-star collaboration between alto saxophonists Rudresh Mahanthappa and Bunky Green, along with Jason Moran on piano and the great Jack DeJohnette on drums. Rudresh Mahanthappa is widely considered one of the most important jazz musicians today, perennially at or near the top of the DownBeat Critic’s Poll. At the age of 75, Bunky Green is a significant, though unsung, trendsetter in the history of jazz. A historically important voice on the alto saxophone, Green transformed the hard-bop jazz vocabulary of the 1960s into a modern musical language. Though his influence is vast, his recorded output is slim—most of his albums are either out of print and highly collectible, or difficult-to-find imports, and Apex provides a rare opportunity to actually hear his music.

Overview

Five acclaimed albums, hundreds of headlining shows, four months touring Europe supporting Rammstein (playing to hundreds of thousands of people) … Combichrist is fired up and ready for action! Many acts reach a certain level of success and rest on their reputations. Combichrist’s Andy LaPlegua returned to the studio with a fistful of inspiration and a whole lot of nothing to prove. With the new album, Making Monsters, LaPlegua emerges a more vital beast, stripped of all pretensions. The new album is raw, visceral, and seething with uncompromising urgency. In pushing forward, Combichrist’s playfully sinister facade is torn away. What is exposed underneath is an uncompromising expression of lust, anger, pain, and hate personified.

Making Monsters is laden with hook-heavy choruses, speaker-crushing beats, and dark aggressive vocals. The first single, “Never Surrender,” is bound to rule the dance floors along with other floor stompers “They” and “Throat Full of Glass.” The song “Follow the Trail of Blood” (featuring Brendan Schiepatti of Bleeding Through) is an anthem of aggression, and will immediately become a crowd favorite. The brooding “Reclamation” and “Through These Eyes of Pain” show us another side of Combichrist, that of the man inside the monster. With Making Monsters, Combichrist evolves beyond the demon it was into an unrelenting, malevolent force in music.

This limited edition double disc collection of KMFDM’s best-known tracks is presented by Metropolis Records, the band’s home for the last half decade. Greatest Shit was compiled by KMFDM’s founder and leader, Sascha K. (Käpt’n K, as he is known to his legion of fans). He created this release for new recruits and veterans alike, specially arranging and sequencing the band’s top tracks for maximum impact. Because a true sampling of the best of KMFDM could not be constrained to one disc, Greatest Shit is presented in a two-disc configuration. Thirty-eight tracks in all, this ultimate ultra-heavy beating has a total running time of over 145 minutes and features tracks from every KMFDM studio album, from 1986’s What Do You Know, Deutschland? to last year’s Blitz.

NAIL WELCOMES REV DISTRO TO ITS ROSTER!

Rev Distribution is proud to team up with NAIL to bring you the best in independent music, including…

REVELATION RECORDS

Revelation began in early 1987, started by Ray Cappo (Youth of Today) and Jordan Cooper in New Haven. The original plan was simply to press a 7” by NY hardcore band Warzone, but when that sold through Revelation put together a comp featuring a diverse pack of NY hardcore bands, several of which would later release records on the label. In the following years, Revelation released what many now consider to be classic hardcore records from the likes of Sick Of It All, Gorilla Biscuits, Youth of Today, and many more. With 20 releases under its belt, the label moved to Huntington Beach in 1991, and its sound evolved with the musical landscape of the day to support post-hardcore and melodic punk/hardcore-influenced groups like Farside, Sense Field, Shades Apart, and Texas Is the Reason, while bands like In My Eyes and Ignite helped maintain the label’s hardcore foundation. More recent releases include albums from Shai Hulud, Sinking Ships, Shook Ones, Down To Nothing, and Capital, while upcoming projects include a compilation of current bands covering songs off some of Revelation’s early releases, a new album from Vancouver’s By A Thread, Tony Rettman’s book Why Be Something That You’re Not covering early Detroit hardcore, and a Verbal Assault discography.

NO SLEEP RECORDS

With many years in the music industry, No Sleep president Chris Hansen finally had the chance to do what he had wanted for so long—help bring back the originality that has been missing in today’s music scene for quite some time. No Sleep hopes to show the world that no matter what genre of music you listen to, there is still quality music out there. With no stop in sight, No Sleep is ready to do what is needed and release pieces of art from artists all over the globe that deserve to be heard.

PANIC RECORDS

Panic Records was formed in Fall 2005 by Trial guitarist Timm McIntosh, with the intention to release long out-of-print recordings. When asked to release his friend’s band Barricade, it took off from there and Panic Records continued to release records from friends’ bands. Though predominately a hardcore/punk label, Panic Records plans to release anything that appeals to the ears of Timm & Co., making it quite an eclectic label. Panic Records has released an assortment of incredible bands including Set Your Goals, Make Do And Mend, Another Breath, Trial, The Golden Age, and Final Fight.

SAILOR’S GRAVE RECORDS

This is the label for those who find themselves outcasts even amongst outcasts—where black eyes, bad luck, and worse tattoos are part & parcel to everyday life. Formed in 2006 as a means to evangelize the likes of street punk, Oi!, Psychobilly, and bad ass rock ‘n roll, SGR quickly branded itself a stalwart in the scene, boasting bands such as U.S. Bombs, Roger Miret and The Disasters, The Ducky Boys, The Kings Of Nuthin’, and more. Fast-forward to 2010 and you’ll find the label continuing to expand with such acts as The Business, Burning Streets, Hollowpoints, Stitch Hopeless and the Sea Legs, and many more!

THORP RECORDS

Andy Thorp King formed Thorp Records in 1999. Embracing the theme of “Hard Working Music,” the label has released over 80 titles and has a history of working with a wide variety of genres—hardcore, punk, metal, and related sub-genres. Thorp has released records from hardcore mainstays Blood For Blood, Madball, Slapshot, and Sheer Terror as well as metallic monsters Ramallah, Scars Of Tomorrow, and Fordirelifesake. The label has also released records from punk acts such as The Ducky Boys, Angel City Outcasts, and Mad Sin, while newer acts include My Turn To Win, Ashers, Refuse Resist, and Bulldog Courage.

TWELVE GAUGE RECORDS

Twelve Gauge Records was formed in 2004 in San Jose with the goal of releasing music that has both meaning and good musical content. Within the following two years, Twelve Gauge made a name for itself with releases that range from hardcore/punk to death metal. The diverse group of bands on the label makes up a discography that includes Set It Straight, Sabertooth Zombie, Heavy Heavy Low Low, and Misericordiam.

Overview

From the opening track “Price Of Man(ipulation)” to the shrill end of the closer, The Effort’s most recent offering is a visceral, desperate, and personal attack on the American dream. With lyrics like, “We give ourselves these mindless jobs, so no one else could ever guess or know that we are all full of shit,” it is clear that Effort frontman and lyricist Tony Auger is filled with an anger that is perfectly captured on the poignant and timely sonic assault this Massachusetts quintet delivers.

Hell Within started in 2002 with five musicians whose only concern was making heavy and aggressive metal. It took two years of playing the local Massachusetts circuit and self-financed East Coast tours for Hell Within to get the attention of previous record label Lifeforce Records. The band released their debut album Asylum Of The Human Predator in April 2005 and sophomore effort Shadows of Vanity in 2007, all the while participating in three full US tours and five East Coast tours with such bands as Manntis (Century Media), God Dethroned (Metal Blade), Nightrage (Century Media/Lifeforce Records), Thine Eyes Bleed (The End Records), Byzantine (Prosthetic Records), The Autumn Offering (Victory Records), and The Human Abstract (Hopeless Records). Hell Within is a band that perseveres through anything that is thrown its way. No matter what the obstacle, the band will always continue writing great metal music and touring with the integrity that has become a way of life. Now backed by new label Thorp Records, armed with the release of God Grant Me Vengeance, and with a lot of experience under their belts, Hell Within moves forward.

Press Quotes

“So the big question concerns whether Hell Within … should move to the upper half of your shopping list. After thoroughly enjoying 10 aggressive tracks played with conviction and delivered in a tight package, I’d have to answer in the affirmative.” — Blabbermouth.net “Hell Within has become a band worthy of their new name. Simply put, Asylum Of The Human Predator is an early favorite for metal album of the year.” — Hit The Pit “With influences that vary from straight-edge hardcore to old school thrash and some parts that sound a lot like twisted death metal, brutality is being redefined.” — Lords Of Metal

“ENOUGH SHOVEL LOADS OF SCANDINAVIAN DEATH METAL INFLUENCE TO BURY AN ELEPHANT GRAVEYARD.” — THEPRP.COM

Overview

It is not rare for bands to claim that they blend various styles of hardcore, punk, metal, and rock together into a unique musical stew. Many bands do indeed achieve that blend, but are rarely able to make it sound new. Even more rarely do they make it sound both new and appealing. But Boston’s Ashers are a rare band. Ashers, fronted by vocalist Mark Civitarese (The Unseen), is Boston’s new diamond in the rough. Through working with bands such as The Unseen, A Global Threat, Blood For Blood, and Death Before Dishonor, Mark’s versatile background has made his voice one of the most distinct in the punk and hardcore world today. Ashers formed out of the chemistry between Mark Civitarese and Billy Brown of Crash And Burn and Deadly Sins—two bands that have become synonymous with the creativity of the Boston scene. Mark and Bill were constantly contributing to each other’s projects, so they finally decided to begin a proper full-time band. Ashers scorches listeners with a vortex of blistering hardcore, dirty rock, anthemic punk, and barroom metal that creates a new flavor altogether for fans of aggressive music. Now joining with Thorp Records, the band has begun their onward march towards introducing the world to a new sense of aggression.

Overview The Business Doing The Business

Genre: Punk Label: Sailor’s Grave Records CDEP: SLG 18 Price Code: J (SRP $9.99) Number of Discs: 1 Jewel Case; Box Lot 30 Street Date: 5/11/2010 U.S. ORDERS ONLY

Indisputably synonymous with the original surge of the British Oi! movement, South London’s working class heroes The Business are still here after 30 years. Instrumental in forming a musical aesthetic often referred to as “pub rock,” “street rock,” or “punk ‘n’ roll,” The Business are indelibly marked by tales of European football games, motorbike excursions, working class triumphs, barroom theatrics, factory life blues, and of course, the unavoidable anthems of the ever-scrutinized drinking and driving. Doing The Business is a new four-song studio EP with six additional live tracks, five of which are from the legendary Marquee recordings from 1982. This new installment of the band’s 30-year legacy is a must-have for any fan’s collection!

Sailor’s Grave Records is excited to announce the release of Old Habits Die Hard by The Kings Of Nuthin’, Boston’s favorite fusion of wild ’50s R&B and cacophonous punk rock. The effort was produced by Jim Siegel and recorded at the Outpost (Dropkick Murphys, Blood For Blood, Death Before Dishonor). Liam Crill had this to say: “Restless from hiding out after legal troubles, injuries, and baby makin’ for the last couple of years, we’re proud to partner back up with Sailor’s Grave again for the release of our first full-length all-original record since Fight Songs in 2002. Come cause trouble with us when we show up in your town.”

Overview

Since forming in 2002, Angel City Outcasts have been writing anthems for punk’s newest generation. This young, hard-rocking quintet from the notorious city of Los Angeles has been quickly coming up as one of L.A.’s top street-rock acts. Through constant touring, Angel City Outcasts have acquired a loyal and dedicated following in much of the US, and they receive constant requests to visit other parts of the world. Getting steady radio play on L.A.’s Indie 103.1 FM and touring/playing with such bands as the Dropkick Murphys, Dead Kennedys, U.S. Bombs, Flogging Molly, and Youth Brigade, Angel City Outcasts invaded the scene one blistering show at a time. Now, with the release of their third full length (and their first self-titled record), the band’s unique sound and outlaw aesthetic has come to full fruition.

Overview

Formed in 2001 by childhood friends Matt McKinney and Ben Early, Seattle’s Hollowpoints combine elements of punk and rock ‘n’ roll reminiscent of The Clash, One Man Army, and Swingin’ Utters. They have been pushing their hook-based sing-alongs both domestically and abroad through constant touring, racking up 10 releases in the past five years. Their forthcoming album, and Sailor’s Grave debut, combines textbook Hollowpoints songwriting with a more personal feel and subject matter. The album, recorded at Hyde Street Studios in San Francisco and Orbit Audio in Seattle, represents the first shot at production by the band’s primary songwriters, McKinney and Early.

A crippling economic recession, an endless war, and the mess has only begun. The world is a guarded place. It’s only fitting that a band like Frontier(s) exists at such a critical juncture. Serrating, D.C.-inflected guitars, tightly wound bass, and dime-stop drums are the brick to Higdon’s mortar as he switches between airy tones and bootshaking roar.

Balance And Composure and Tigers Jaw are two bands that have brought uniqueness to today’s growing music scene. They have strayed away from styles that seemed overplayed, and have offered a fresh new sound for listeners. Both have been compared to some of the ’90s most memorable bands, a scene that was a stepping-stone for many of today’s most notable and successful acts. It is not a question of whether these bands will release well-received music, but when it will come.

Overview

With two sonically distinct full-length records under its belt, The Brother Kite was determined to create something as ambitious, yet completely unique. They deconstructed their dense wall-of-sound into contrasting textures while adding synthesizers and sparse drum machine tracks, and the result strips TBK’s sound down into individual elements, allowing each guitar pluck, tambourine clash, and warbling synth line to stand on its own.

Genre: Ambient Label: Conspiracy Records LP: CNS 93 Price Code: 2I (SRP $21.99) Number of Discs: 1 LP Jacket; Box Lot 18 Street Date: 9/28/10 U.S. ORDERS ONLY

The arc of Bryant Clifford Meyer’s musical trajectory is characterized by a penchant for sonic meditations. Over the years, this hypnotic tendency found a footing in the protracted low-end rumble of The Gersch, the monolithic crescendos of post-metal legends ISIS, and the call-to-arms scores of Red Sparowes. But nowhere is this predilection towards the pensive and the brooding more apparent than in Meyer’s recent solo efforts. Under the moniker of Taiga, the multi-instrumentalist sheds the guitar-laden thunder of his collaborative work in favor of reserved melodies and exploratory studies in texture and dynamics.

Thirty-eight years after reinventing the musical wheel, Smegma has recorded a stunning masterpiece. With four of the original members working together again for the first time in many years—together with many new collaborators—they have kept alive their unique brand of old school primitive, avant garage music. Several tracks were recorded live at a house party in September 2009, including a spontaneous jam exclusive to the LP. Overview

These pieces originated in improvised recordings, which were then taken to Snowghost Studios in Montana and overdubbed with additional instruments— synths, drums, bass, and organs. They were edited down over the course of a few months until they cohered into a fully realized studio album of carefully constructed and meticulously composed pieces rooted in music that could only have been performed spontaneously. Simultaneous Quodlibet was created out of the spirit of long-term colleagues and friends using the studio-as-instrument to recreate what they had already created. Warm and complex with a fine rhythmic shuffle, these pieces are both glowing with surprises emanating from enduring collaborations and musical companionship.

Erroneous: A Selection of Errors is the result of the meeting of Italian cult band Larsen and Steven Stapleton’s ubiquitous creature Nurse With Wound. Almost two years of file-swapping and occasional conceptual meetings led to a multiheaded collection of deformed sounds based on one long NWW piece and two Larsen tracks (that both bands wrote specifically for this project), which were then deconstructed and rebuilt into totally brand new opuses. Erroneous also features Neu! and Kraftwerk original member Eberhard Kranemann on additional guitars, synth, sax, and vocals, as well as Larsen collaborator Daniele Pagliero, a.k.a. Lo Dev Alm, on bass. Just like the music, the artwork is also a joint effort sporting works of Stapleton’s alter ego Babs Santini, Larsen’s graphic designer Bellissimo, and E. Kranemann.

Since their last release Seize the Time, Flattbush has spent relentless months honing their skills with Otomatik Attak, and the effort has paid off in spades. Somehow, they have managed to up the ante even further, and the result is nothing short of total assault … BUT WITH HOOKS! Yes, the guitars rain down like guillotines over a battery of highly toxic blastbeats, but any comparison to your typical extreme metal band would be superficial at best. And it all works.

The Ravenna Colt is Johnny Quaid finally realizing and returning to his troubadour roots. Quaid was well immersed in music, from his own songwriting & performing to his work as a recording engineer at Above the Cadillac Studios—chops that would serve the young songwriter well. In 1998 Johnny joined Jim James, a.k.a. Yim Yames, on a project that would change their lives—My Morning Jacket. He departed from the group amicably at the start of 2004, picking up where he left off with Above the Cadillac, and decided it was time to get The Colt running free.

The third release in Karate Body’s Belt Series elevates the party. For the last six years or so, Lucky Pineapple has made our little planet three dimensional with its progressive mix of styles, from Caribbean and gypsy to funk and prog. Now they clobber us with “Kablooey,” an instrumental anthem chock-full of what has made this collective a favorite for years: flashy horns, ass-shaking percussion, and sunny guitar tones. After their sold-out showcase at this year’s SXSW, it’s only a matter of time before LP’s infectious repertoire finds its way into stereos and clubs everywhere. Joining them are Chicago compadres Prizzy Prizzy Please. Also an alum of SXSW 2010, P3 has put the cheek in tongue and cheek for years, bringing you hits like “Shorgasm” and “Ride the Love Bullet.” Now, on the heels of the release of their new album Chroma Cannon (Joyful Noise), comes “Super Volcano,” an explosive jam led by white-hot falsetto, scorching keys, and saxophones. Like “Kablooey,” “Super Volcano” is exclusive to this release.
