elphian Records was born 10 years ago out of the hothouse of artistic activity that takes place around Edinburgh’s International Festivals. The catalog, curated by native Scot Paul Baxter, draws on the more intriguing and lesser-known areas of the repertoire, with a special focus on Scottish art music. Relationships are developed with artists, resulting in some interesting series—and sometimes fascinating diversions. Be it the sophisticated song of Ronald Stevenson, the piping strains of Martyn Bennett, or the prose of Alexander McCall Smith, if it’s on Delphian it’s sure to surprise.

Mr McFall’s Chamber Rick Standley: double bass Susan Hamilton: soprano Nicholas Mulroy: tenor BRYARS: Eight Irish Madrigals • Epilogue from Wonderlawn • The Church Closest to the Sea “Written for Mr McFall’s Chamber following a chance meeting with the Scots ensemble’s fellow bass player, The Church Closest to the Sea favours the subterranean tones of double bass, tam-tam, bass drum, and piano to furnish a brooding sensibility, like a relaxed but furtive stroll along the sea bed.” — The Independent “The music of Gavin Bryars falls under no category. It is mongrel, full of sensuality and wit, and is deeply moving.” — Michael Ondaatje The double bass has always been close to Gavin Bryars’ heart. His own instrument, it has also featured strongly in his music for other players—as in The Church Closest to the Sea, written for Mr McFall’s Chamber and their bassist Rick Standley. Bryars’ music straddles worlds: classical and jazz, composition and improvisation, the works on this disc moving between the lushly sensuous and the coolly laid-back as they meditate on geographical and emotional borderlands. Includes two world premiere recordings.

A long-planned collaboration with Mr McFall’s Chamber was never realized during his tragically short lifetime. Sánchez-Verdú: director SÁNCHEZ-VERDÚ: AURA (complete chamber opera) This chamber opera, based on the eponymous novel by Carlos Fuentes, is a piece about reality and fiction, about the strength of the imagination and the power of the past, and about love. The spherical, “auratic” sound is provided by the auraphone, an instrument Sánchez-Verdú developed specifically for this work that consists of three gongs and two tam-tams. Stimulated by the voices of the singers and/or by certain instruments from the ensemble, the gongs are made to resonate by electronic means, causing the sounds to ring out as if from nowhere.

Forza Puccini!” — Astor Piazzolla This is the world premiere recording of Romerías, a suite for solo guitar in nine movements written by Lalo Schifrin, who says, “‘Romerías’ in Spanish means ‘carnivals’ or ‘big parties,’ where there is a display of popular arts, food, and drinks. Romerías for solo guitar is a suite that reflects that feeling of celebration. It explores the different possibilities of this great instrument within the parameters of classical, popular, and folk elements. At the same time, it also brings out the various potentialities of the guitar technique.” The CD also contains other works by various composers, many written specifically for Sergio Puccini.

Ragna Schirmer: piano BRAHMS: Variations on a Theme by Handel, Op. 24 • 16 Waltzes, Op. 39 • Two Rhapsodies, Op. 79 Last year Ragna Schirmer was awarded an ECHO Klassik award for her recording of Handel’s Suites. In her latest recording, she pursues the works that Brahms composed based on the “Aria con variazioni.” She impressively illustrates the fact that Brahms’ homage to Handel was only one of his many musical facets: for instance, Brahms also chose to live in Vienna, a fact that is easily recognizable from his sixteen charming waltzes, played by the pianist here in the solo version. Finally, in the turbulent rhapsodies, Schirmer shows Brahms the expressive, using rhapsodic freedom of form in sweeping waves of passion. also available HANDEL Keyboard Suites Cat # BER 16452 Price Code: 3Q (SRP $47.99)

Born in 1964, Stefan Sanderling became General Music Director of the Brandenburgische Philharmonie and the Potsdam Opera in 1990, making him one of the youngest conductors to be appointed to such a position. Receiving early artistic inspiration from his parents, noted conductor Kurt Sanderling and double-bass player Barbara Sanderling, Stefan studied at the Leipzig Conservatory under the watchful eye of Kurt Masur, going on to assist in Hallé and at the Komische Oper Berlin. His conducting career started with the Tanglewood Music Centre Orchestra at Tanglewood Summer Music Festival, which enabled him to work with such eminent names as Bernstein, Ozawa, Slatkin, and Temirkanov. Since his appointment at Potsdam, he has conducted many fine orchestras, including Dresdener Staatkapelle, Berliner Sinfonie Orhcestra, Royal Philharmonic, Vienna Chamber Orchestra, Rotterdam Orchestra, and the Prague Symphony Orchestra, to name a few.

Ensemble 360 has gained an enviable reputation across the UK, not only for the quality and integrity of their playing, but also for their ability to communicate the music to a range of different audiences. The ensemble is the resident group of Music In The Round, Britain’s leading chamber music festival outside London.
Beethoven’s pupil, friend, and protégé Carl Czerny is almost forgotten today except as the author of a long-influential piano method. But, like his peers among Beethoven’s circle of friends, Czerny carried on the torch of the late-classical style into the early years of the age of Romanticism, and made a distinctive contribution through his own creative work.

All five pieces demonstrate his acute ear for orchestral and instrumental sonority, especially in their imaginative use of percussion; they also serve as a reminder of his love for Baroque forms such as passacaglia and ritornello, and his interest in contemporary procedures such as palindromic and aleatory methods.
