WELCOME to the nail family NEW RAG RECORDS pg 3

New Rag Records specializes in artists that bring something new to the classic sounds of jazz, blues, and country. While the label has a deep appreciation for musical tradition, they also acknowledge the importance of progress. These genres, which we refer to as “classic,” were at one time revolutionary. New Rag Records looks for the modern-day revolutionaries of roots music, who pay homage to the past while advancing the way music is played, performed, and recorded. New Rag Records seeks echoes of the past to record them in stereo.

POP CULTURE PRESS RECORDS pg 7

Pop Culture Press Records is a new Austin-based indie label from the founders of the long-running music magazine of the same name. The label will reflect its owners’ tastes, which lean toward indie and psychedelic music; they’re also big fans of Flying Nun Records and Kiwi and British pop.

Blair Crimmins & The Hookers Sing-a-Longs

Selling Points • • • •

Extensive touring for Fall 2013 & Spring 2014. #1 requested band on WRAS Atlanta! Previous releases tested very well at college radio. RIYL: Andrew Bird, Tom Waits, Mumford and Sons.

Media & Marketing

• Regular radio and in-store performances on tour. • Full service/promotion to press and radio by Team Clermont and Pete Knapp & Co. • Ad campaigns on Google, Facebook, and Twitter. • Targeted email marketing campaign. • Video campaigns through YouTube and Vevo.

The humorously tongue-in-cheek Sing-a-Longs is Blair Crimmins’ slightly sarcastic yet charming sophomore release, an upbeat companion to his more sultry previous works that still keeps a sinister smile behind the colorful facade. Blair Crimmins and his band The Hookers breathe new life into the sounds of the 1920s with a supercharged mix of Ragtime, Dixieland, and Gypsy Jazz. This batch of original songs speaks to the listeners of today while harkening back to the sounds of the past to create a soundtrack that could just as easily be found in your grandfather’s record collection as a college dance party!

“The very first note immediately sends the listener back to a 1920s Vaudeville theatre, where Blair Crimmins intoxicates an audience with his smooth voice and the band supports him with flawlessly appropriate musical accompaniment.” — PERFORMER MAGAZINE

I Draw Slow’s latest project, and Pinecastle Records debut, Redhills prominently features the songwriting talents of Dave & Louise Holden. Their artfully crafted melodies support the poetic verse in each song; all but two tracks on the album were written by the pair. Redhills is a whole new songbook of stories and melodies, featuring dark tales of debauchery and trouble swinging from the kind of well-crafted melodies that survive. Redhills was released in Ireland in 2011, where it caught the attention of the bluegrass crowd, and Pinecastle Records is pleased to re-release the project in the United States.

“An interesting mix of American and Irish folk styles, blending the traditional music of both cultures with a contemporary Americana/Celtic sensibility.” — BLUEGRASS TODAY “Engaging, beautiful, and consistent from start to finish. Believe it or not, though they sound like they’re from North Carolina, they are from Ireland.” — FOLK ALLEY, BEST OF 2012

Holding It Down: The Veterans’ Dreams Project is the result of a three-year collaboration between Grammy® nominee Vijay Iyer and poet/librettist Mike Ladd, with veterans of color from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. It is also the culmination of a trilogy of works spanning more than a decade of American life, including the critically acclaimed In What Language? and Still Life with Commentator. For Holding It Down, Iyer and Ladd explore the experiences of veterans of these wars, in particular their post-traumatic-stress-disorder-induced nightmares. They interviewed scores of veterans about their dreams, many of which are retold here. Iyer and Ladd also enlisted the help of Maurice Decaul, a poet who served with the Marines in Iraq, and Lynn Hill, who served in the Air Force. Their harrowing poetry and performances serve as the heart and soul of this project. With seething power, Holding It Down explores how post-9/11 war veterans go about their irreversibly altered lives.

Los Angeles band the black watch has released 17 records since 1988 and is, according to the equally venerable Trouser Press, “a national treasure of fuzzy-jangly-catchy super literate indie pop.” Joined since 2008 by ex-The Chills lead guitarist and singer Steven Schayer, the band has a live sound that the Austin Chronicle has called “VU meets Soft Boys madness.” Interestingly, founder John Andrew Fredrick has just published his second work of fiction, a novel about an indie rock band; it’s called The King of Good Intentions (Verse Chorus Press) and pre-orders and early Amazon sales have been nothing less than astonishing — the best VCP have enjoyed in 20 years in the business! Fredrick has been giving readings accompanied by solo acoustic shows in order to promote the novel, and a full-band tour is in the works for Fall 2013.

“John Andrew Fredrick, after a zillion albums, always has an uncanny knack for finding melody in the dissonance, chaos in the calm.” — AUSTIN CHRONICLE “With its sweet melodies and dreamy distortion, this LP is chock-full of wonderful tunes and harmonies that put one in mind of The Go-Betweens x My Bloody Valentine.” — DETROIT METRO TIMES “With a vocal prowess that rivals Robert Smith’s, John Andrew Fredrick writes the dreamiest pop songs this side of Kevin Shields.” — POPMATTERS Key Markets: Hometown: Los Angeles. With 2011’s Modern Ruin still a fresh memory, Covenant is already back with a brilliant follow-up, entitled Leaving Babylon. Following a brief stint as The Resistors, Luton-based UK Decay was formed in Winter 1978. From there, the band became renowned in the late ’70s/early ’80s UK punk and underground scene, and was one of the first to blur the lines from punk to “Gothic.” After lying dormant for three decades, the winter of 2012/13 saw UK Decay enter the studio with renowned rock producer Chris Tsangarides to record the long awaited follow-up to the 1981 underground classic For Madmen Only. The resulting album, New Hope for the Dead, is a heavy sonic assault built upon the politics of dissent, with contents that cover big issues such as the twin evils of extremism and bigotry, the fracturing nature of society, and attraction to things that ultimately harm us. Never driven by aspirations of commercial success, the band would rather be active and outspoken on issues such as racism and imperialism. He’s released 15 albums and collaborated with an impressive list of people, including members of Can, Faust, Throbbing Gristle, Swans, cEvin Key, and others. Bundle 1995–2013 stands as a career-spanning primer into the challenging and innovative musical world of Dead Voices On Air. Spybey began working as DVOA in 1992 in the wake of relocating from his native Britain to Canada. Employing processed sounds generated by primitive instruments and childrens’ toys, and eschewing the standard sequencers and samplers, he began sculpting experimental soundscapes. Reissue of 1999 release, predecessor to Lost In Love. Two tracks featured in the 1995 film Habit. Led by solo recording artist Tom Laverack and filmmaker Larry Fessenden. Features famed NYC engineer Wharton Tiers on drums and percussion. Contains “Almost Shook You Up,” a 1990 single released on Bar/None. RIYL: Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, Paul Westerberg.

Just Desserts returns a decade after their debut release to hang out at the old haunts, show their scars, and sadly realize that however grandiose the plans, when all is said and done you should be happy with the fact that you are still breathing … although that will come to end too. The length of time to it took to record (over six years) indicates the struggle inherent in being afforded the luxury to be in the studio. Two songs, “Save You From Yourself” and “Mystery,” were featured in Larry Fessenden’s 1995 film Habit. Larry, too busy with making films, penned only the one anthem, “Road to Ruin,” with a message that unfortunately only became truer and truer as the new millennium dawned.

“They say revenge is sweet, but Just Desserts is absolutely delicious.” — ROCKPOOL Track Listing: Last Rock n Roll Band • Almost Shook You Up • Maybe I’m The One • Save You From Yourself • Lightningrod • Beautiful Life • Can’t Come In From The Cold • Alcohol • Road To Ruin • Where I Belong • Ragdoll • Longshot • Mystery Key Markets: Hometown: Brooklyn

• Lo-fi recordings of acclaimed solo artist/Just Desserts frontman Tom Laverack. • Mixed by Wharton Tiers. • RIYL: John Prine, Bon Iver, Neil Young.

This collaboration between old friends Daniel Egger (producer) and Just Desserts frontman Tom Laverack was created circa 1993–1996. The initial goal was an anthology that would span from teenage years to present. Though the material was collected, the “best-of collection” remains the only release from 1999. Laverack has been writing and performing music since age 16, living a majority of his adult life in New York City.

John Lemke is a Glasgow-based composer and sound designer, originally from Berlin. Working across a great variety of media, he explores all things sonic through collaborations, live performance, film sound design, and especially his work as a documentary film composer for the BBC and Channel 4. Motivated by fusing elements of his more emotive film compositions with rhythm and space, John creates a distinctive sound blend on his debut solo album, where percussive, prepared piano collides with abstracted guitar landscapes and disembodied vocal textures to form a danceable, electro-acoustic whole. With a process drawing on techniques of musique concrète, sound design concepts, and the use of homemade field recordings from around Europe, the album is filled with depth and a real sense of journey.

Fiction is the highly anticipated debut recording from Matt Mitchell, one of the most in-demand pianists in jazz. Recently named one of “Four Young Pianists on the Rise” by the New York Times, Mitchell is a member of the Dave Douglas Quintet, John Hollenbeck’s Claudia Quintet & Large Ensemble, and most prominently with Tim Berne’s Snakeoil, whose eponymous album garnered accolades as one of the best releases of 2012. The music on Fiction completely re-imagines the notion of piano jazz. Mitchell originally conceived each piece as an etude that tested the technical limits of his pianistic abilities. Packed with wild gyrations of rhythm and counterpoint, the pieces on Fiction are like some warped amalgam of Thelonious Monk, Chopin, and Autechre. Accompanying Mitchell is drummer Ches Smith (Mr. Bungle, Marc Ribot’s Ceramic Dog, Secret Chiefs 3), who brings a punk and indie-rock aesthetic. The music pushes and pulls against form, a perpetual motion machine of variations on a theme, but with hiccups. Seeming not wholly of this world, Fiction is a figment of Mitchell’s febrile imagination and another outpost in the possibilities of jazz improvisation.

“His piano creates the space it lives in; he’s a master of evaporating tones, and every chord he plays is broken crystal — sharp and translucent.” — GIOVANNI RUSSONELLO, CAPITAL BOP “A pianist of classical touch and methodical temperament, he fell in with coolly instigative composer-improvisers like John Hollenbeck and Tim Berne, his reputation accruing as a byproduct of his work ethic.” — NEW YORK TIMES

From the electronica shimmer of “Attack Everything” and the disco-tinged swagger of “Everybody Loves a Star” to the more sedate guitar nuances of “Dark Side of the Room” and the surprisingly introspective lyrics of “Kate Moss,” Neurotic Exotic shows Moving Units at its most diverse while maintaining the signature sound for which the band has always been known.

“Miraculously, even with all these ’80s references, Moving Units never sound dated. Instead, they’ve got enough going on in their novel electronics and within the music’s subtext to come off as fresh and modern.” — SENTIMENTALIST

• Sasquatch have been around for 10 years, and have a very large following in the underground rock community. • Will tour the U.S. and Europe in support of this release. • Music has been tapped to soundtrack everything from movies (Jersey Girl), to television shows (FX’s “Sons of Anarchy,” A&E’s “Dog The Bounty Hunter,” The CW’s “Supernatural,” and MTV’s “Viva La Bam), to video games (NHL 2005, American Chopper, Monster Garage). • Press & radio campaign via Small Stone, No Other PR (UK), and Gordeon Music (Germany). • Video promotion via Rive Video Marketing. • Rick Kosick (“Jackass”) has been tapped to make a video for the album. • RIYL: Clutch, Orange Goblin, Fu Manchu, The Sword, Dixie Witch.

After bursting onto the stoner rock scene with two closely packed studio albums (conveniently named I and II), this power trio went subterranean until 2010, resurfacing with a new lineup and propulsive third opus (III). Now the time has finally come for Sasquatch to deliver a brand-new album, whose title was as inevitable as the urgent need shared by discerning fans of superior, song-oriented rock to HEAR IT! This is arguably the trio’s most mature, inspired, and diverse set to date, rife with compositional twists, thundering power chords, sizzling solos, shrewd melodic flights, and super-trippy moments — all of it heavy on the heavy. Astute observers will recognize Alexander von Wieding’s name as the artist behind album covers for the likes of Monster Magnet, Karma To Burn, Wo-Fat, and countless others. Over the last several years, the German illustrator has contributed art to Small Stone releases from Freedom Hawk, Tia Carrera, Infernal Overdrive, Sun Gods In Exile, Sasquatch, Gozu, and many more. Now, as the label releases a new album from von Wieding’s musical solo project Larman Clamor, that relationship grows even deeper.

Per Jacob Faurholt: “A good friend of mine from Berlin, the Canadian musician Soren Little Brothers a.k.a. Man Meets Bear, had made a bunch of albums that were more or less hidden away (or at least only available at live shows on CD-R with homemade covers). This got me thinking about making an album that was not meant for anybody but myself, that lyrically would be embarrassingly direct and describe certain episodes in my life that for some reason had burned themselves into my mind. I would only record when I felt inspired, mostly by other artist’s music. As an example, listening to Jay Z’s ‘Empire State of Mind’ inspired me to write ‘The Horror Of It All.’ The album, which took over two years to finish, contains stories about struggles with anxiety, the death of a dear family member, teenage insecurity, panic attacks, and much more.”

DELAYED FROM JANUARY 2013

Alessandro Cortini (Nine Inch Nails, How To Destroy Angels) recorded Forse 2 using a Buchla Music Easel, of which only 13 are known to exist. Forse, meaning “maybe” in Italian, is a series of double-LP releases in editions of 500 copies each. Cortini says: “All pieces were written and performed live on a Buchla Music Easel, in the span of one month. Of all the years with Nine Inch Nails, the period spent writing and recording the instrumental record Ghosts I–IV is probably the one that changed my approach to music-making the most. After that record I started getting more into instrumental composition, although I tried to approach it in a different way. While we had a vast array of tools and instruments at our disposal then, I decided to approach my pieces limiting myself to one instrument only, as I found myself being more decisive when faced with a limited creative environment.” Track Listing: scappa • scotta • matta • macchia • ritorna Key Markets: Hometown: Los Angeles. Born into a musical family in Argentina, Sebastian Plano is a classically trained contemporary composer and multi-instrumentalist. Exploring his strong roots in folk music and tango, and enchanted by the resonance of electronic music, he began to interpret his imagination in sound at the age of 12. With the release of his debut album Arrhythmical Part of Hearts, Plano gained international acclaim, placing him as one of the pioneering artists combining classical and electronic elements. In comparison to his debut, Impetus comprises a larger acoustic instrumentation and a nurtured way of handling sounds. “Reminiscent of John Adams in a mellow mood … in the postMinimalist, neo-neo-Romantic vein, with a dash of trance music.” — SAN FRANCISCO CLASSICAL VOICE Track Listing: Impetus • The World We Live In • Blue Loving Serotonin • In Between Worlds II • Emotions (Part II) • Angels • All Given To Machinery • Inside Eyes Key Markets: Hometown: San Francisco. A hint of cool ’50s jazz, a truckload of noise and melodies, tiny references to the “Twin Peaks” soundtrack, and some ghostly tone voices: the Dale Cooper Quartet pushes the dark jazz genre to another space! Quatorze Pièces de Menace is as striking, deep, fascinating, and beautiful as a storm in the middle of the Atlantic. Halfway between their debut Parole de Navarre’s drone-driven soundscapes and the more orchestrated Métamanoir, this new collection of tracks follows the band’s quest for dreamy and mysterious places.
