Hallé Orchestra Sir Mark Elder: conductor SIBELIUS: Pohjola’s Daughter, Op. 49 • The Oceanides, Op. 73 • Symphony No. 2 in D, Op. 43 “Arresting … elaborate [and] superbly integrated.” — Sunday Times Following their recording of Symphonies 1& 3, this release marks the second disc of Sibelius works from the award-winning Hallé Orchestra under Sir Mark Elder. The disc includes the long-awaited recording of Elder’s interpretation of the ever-popular Symphony No. 2, a work closely associated with the Hallé, who gave the British premiere in 1905. It is coupled with the dramatic Pohjola’s Daughter, an orchestral showpiece featuring the Hallé at the height of its powers, and the lesser-known but deeply evocative musical portrait of the sea entitled The Oceanides. Together, those performances perfectly illustrate the renaissance that has been achieved at the Hallé under Sir Mark Elder.

Sleeveless Records Lionel Handy: cello Nigel Clayton: piano BAX: Sonatina for cello and piano • Rhapsodic Ballad for solo cello • Folk-Tale for cello and piano • Legend Sonata for cello and piano “This is a superbly planned and no less superbly executed disc … Handy’s tone is exceptionally clean. His use of vibrato, while never obtrusive, instills the notes with life.” — International Record Review “A rewarding listen, the sheer discipline and the interpretive integrity of the performers distinguishing it from much of the competition.” — Classical Music Review Distinguished cellist Lionel Handy presents an astonishingly compelling account of Bax’s complete cello works, accompanied by equally distinguished pianist Nigel Clayton. The recording is supported by the Royal Academy of Music, and its inspiration was the centenary of Handy’s own teacher, Florence Hooton, whose rapport and close work with Bax enabled her to pass on invaluable insights into the interpretation of his works. The disc contains the only available commercial recording of Bax’s Rhapsodic Ballad for solo cello (1939), and is an essential addition to the CD library of any cellist or British music enthusiast, while also marking another step in Handy’s ongoing aim of broadening the solo cello repertoire.

Fedora Barbieri, Gianni Raimondi, Carlo Tagliabue, Giulio Neri: vocal soloists RAI Symphony Orchestra & Chorus, Turin Angelo Questa: conductor DONIZETTI: La Favorita (complete opera) Historic performance, recorded November 23, 1955. The great conductor Arturo Toscanini once said, “the opera La Favorita is all beautiful; the last act — every note a masterpiece.” Perhaps even more impressive, however, was the verdict of Richard Wagner, who dismissed most Italian operas; nevertheless he asserted that in Favorita, “there is greater skill, and a dignity you would seek in vain in the other countless works of the inexhaustible maestro” — referring to Donizetti’s amazing fecundity, often resulting in two or three new operas per year. In La Favorita, a young monk leaves his order to pursue the beautiful Leonora, unaware that she is the secret “favorite” (mistress) of King Alfonso XI of Spain. When he finds out he angrily rejects her, but at the end they are reconciled, and she dies in his arms. “A big advantage is … the presence of Giulio Neri. He was one of the few Italian basses to have a big black sound in the Boris Christoff mould … His fury at the end of Act II, abetted by Questa, is awe-inspiring … Another strong point is Carlo Tagliabue as Alfonso. He was nearing the end of his career (he retired in 1957) but signs of age in the voice, which still retains a firm, golden quality, are used artistically to create a king who has regal dignity but also humanity … [The recording also has] the best Ines … [a tenor] with several points in his favour … [and] a magnificent Leonora. Any dedicated opera fan is going to want to hear it.” — Musicweb-International.com

CABEZÓN: a collection of organ music ROTA: Piano Concerto in E minor • KHACHATURIAN: Piano Concerto This wonderful new release juxtaposes two piano concertos by two very different composers; one a Milanese child prodigy and the other a great Soviet composer.

Five hundred years after his birth, Cabezón’s music continues to cause wonderment due to its sweetness and oddity, determined by three fundamental aspects: the composer’s extensive travels, the instruments at his disposal, and the geographical and temporal diffusion of his works.

The way in which Liszt observed the art of Giuseppe Verdi, a musician who was quite distant from him in manner, is quite significant, particularly if we consider what he chose, among the countless facets of Verdi’s musical and theatrical world, in order to obtain the wonderful fantasies and transcriptions for pianos that are contained in this disc. Here we do not find any trace of the “moral” Verdi — even less of the “patriotic” Verdi — but we do find inexhaustible variations on the deep-rooted theme of Romanticism.

Giulio Piovani: organ PETRALI: complete organ works Vincenzo Antonio Petrali (1830–1889) was indisputably the predominant figure in the world of Italian organists during the second half of the 19th century, and was also acknowledged as the greatest epigone in the felicitous history of the so-called risorgimentale organ, whose taste was embodied in the instruments of the Serassi organ makers and of the various schools that proceeded from them. It is safe to say that with Petrali the theatrical style, which was directly influenced by the invasive influence of the opera’s immense popularity, reached its climax. However, he was also one of the protagonists of the transition from that style to musical canons that referred to the models of the great polyphonic tradition (Palestrina and Bach, to mention the most frequently quoted), in keeping with the opinions of the upholders of the so-called Cecilian Reform. Quartz Records Daniel Tong: piano SCHUBERT: Piano Sonata No. 20 in A, D959 • Six Moments Musicaux, D780 Daniel Tong’s musical life is spent performing as soloist and chamber musician, as well as directing two chamber music festivals and teaching. The magnificent series of instrumental works Schubert produced after Beethoven’s death in March 1827 suggests that the self-effacing former schoolteacher, who never dared approach the master in his lifetime (though he was a pall-bearer at his funeral), was eager to establish himself as his successor as a composer of instrumental music. To reinforce the point, in all three sonatas but especially the C minor, D958 and the A major, D959, he draws directly on Beethovenian precedents. While most of the Moments musicaux seem to date from the summer or autumn of 1827 — the year of Winterreise — two were composed several years earlier.

These are very short works; only two of these miniature masterpieces last for three minutes or more. Their brevity demands concentration and requires a rigorous sense of structure, as Villa-Lobos lets endless inventions collide and overlap in sound saturated with ingenuity. The oldest pieces, dating from 1912, are the Suites Infantis (Children’s Suites).
