After many years of anticipation, Ade turns his attention to the touchstone of Vivaldi’s concerto output, The Four Seasons. As one has come to expect, he brings something unique to an interpretation brimming with vitality and originality. Putting this most popular of classical works into context, Ade rounds out the recording with Vivaldi concertos for bassoon, including the famous La Notte, and world premiere recordings of two concertos for the violin in tromba marina, a hitherto obsolete instrument that was used during Vivaldi’s lifetime. Simon Russell Beale: presenter Harry Christophers: conductor The Sixteen SPECIAL EDITION INCLUDES: DVD Documentary Program • 2 CDs features The Sixteen’s 2014 recording of Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610 “The interplay of music, image, and appealingly-elaborated context creates a rich polyphony of its own.” — BBC Music Magazine Broadcast on BBC 2 in April 2015, Monteverdi in Mantua tells the story of a Renaissance duke and the composer who worked for him — and how their volatile relationship would create one of the most revolutionary and beautiful collections of music ever published: the Monteverdi Vespers of 1610. The program is presented by Shakespearean actor and former St. Paul’s Cathedral chorister Simon Russell Beale, whose enthusiasm for choral music is matched by his gift for storytelling. Together with conductor Harry Christophers and his virtuoso choir The Sixteen, Simon explores Monteverdi’s early career in Mantua, where he wrote the Vespers under the slave-like regime of Duke Vincenzo Gonzaga, a man addicted to sex, luxury, and art. Using the remarkable legacy of 127 surviving letters, Monteverdi is revealed as the first of a new breed of dramatic composer: straddling the worlds of the secular and sacred, whose bold experiments would change the way music sounds forever. Besides the positive and most valuable lessons that we have learned regarding instrumentation, articulation, and musical editions, one tends to forget that today’s listener hears within a completely different sphere as those who lived 300 years ago. An authentic listening experience is, despite what we would all like to believe, simply not possible. It is for this reason that I have strived to make a connection with today’s world, by pairing the suites with works by contemporary composers, setting them in an unusual and incisive perspective. This is designed as a modern reflection, with the hope and expectation that we will hear these suites in a different and more genuinely ‘authentic’ manner.”

It is due to ignorance and prejudice that contemporary classical compositions are living an unjustly shadowy existence. This new album offers the opportunity to get acquainted with music around the turn of the millennium. Mauricio Kagel, famous for his visionary sounds, condenses the atmosphere of our times into new sonorities in an enjoyable, humorous, and sometimes satirical way. A form of new romanticism is the keyword for Fumio Yasuda’s work, and Hans Abrahamsen is counted among the representatives of the new simplicity. This album is not made for specialists of new music; rather, it is an invitation to overcome a fear of the unknown!

Jean Roger-Ducasse was born in Bordeaux on April 18, 1873. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire from 1892, and in 1895 — along with Ravel — he joined the composition class of Gabriel Fauré. Roger-Ducasse’s compositions include several songs, two string quartets, numerous orchestral and choral pieces, two stage works, and a sizeable group of piano pieces. Contrary to the music of Ravel and Debussy, Roger-Ducasse’s style is not impressionist but descends from Chopin and more closely aligns with Fauré. The piano music, composed from 1906–1923, is typical of his musical language: complex and chromatic, but perfectly formed. It is now high time to revisit the works of this unjustly forgotten talent!

In January 1824 he took the melody of the eighteenth song, “Trockne Blumen,” and made it the basis of his Introduction and Variations in E minor on “Trockne Blumen” for flute and piano.

CD: NIM 6309 Price Code: Q (SRP $15.99) Number of Discs: 1 Jewel Case, Box Lot 25

Beethoven’s only mature and substantial contribution to the instrument’s repertoire is the Serenade, Op. 25 for flute, violin, and viola, written in 1801. In 1803, the Bohemian composer Franz X. Kleinheinz (1772–1832) arranged this work for flute (or violin) and piano. The arrangement was obviously carried out with Beethoven’s full approval, as he is known to have checked it over and sanctioned it before it was printed in December, 1803. Robert Schumann wrote no original pieces for flute. However, it is but a small leap for flautists to include the 3 Romances, Op. 94 in their repertoire. They were written in 1849, for oboe, but with the composer’s indication that they were suitable for either clarinet or violin.

It is the year 1880. Harry Jordan, a handsome young American biographer, is researching the life and work of the poet Jeffrey Aspern, who died in tragic circumstances in 1822. He has discovered that Juliana Bordereau, Aspern’s last mistress, is living in poverty in Venice with her niece and companion, Miss Tina. Miss Bordereau is said to own certain unpublished manuscripts relating to Aspern. With the help of his friend Mrs. Prest, Jordan hopes to rent rooms in Miss Bordereau’s decaying palazzo and so gain access to the coveted Aspern papers. This disc also includes the chamber opera The Night of the Wedding, based on Frank Witney’s Nuit de Noces.

Ian VENABLES

This EM Records release of British cello music performed by the Jenkinson Frith Duo presents music by Ian Venables alongside world premiere recordings by Cyril Scott and Ivor Gurney. Cyril Scott’s Cello Sonata was composed in 1958, when the composer had just turned 70; despite being a late work it is in no way autumnal, but is instead a dramatic four-movement piece that displays all the composer’s mature fingerprints. Ivor Gurney’s mantle as one of England’s finest composers of art songs is now extending to his orchestral and chamber music, of which this sonata is a fine example. Ian Venables, like Gurney, has not only made song a central part of his output but has also composed chamber works of equal beauty and intensity. As well as the early Elegy and the later Poem, the other three works featured on this disc are transcriptions of two of his most evocative songs and a rhapsodic paraphrase of the song “The Moon Sails Out.”

The principal joy resides in Billy Mayerl’s music — British piano pieces that are syncopated and melodious … Philip Martin (he is joy number two) leaps through the repertoire with clean and infectious élan.” — BBC Music Magazine HHHH The second CD of music by the legendary Billy Mayerl, one of the most successful and brilliantly gifted composer-pianists of his generation! He played the Grieg Piano Concerto at London’s Queen’s Hall when only seven years old, and gave the British premiere of his friend George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue in the composer’s presence. The success of the first volume (SMM 124) has shown that there is a new and growing market for Mayerl’s syncopated music, and Philip Martin is equally charismatic and compelling in this second volume.

The disc explores works written while Britten was a student at London’s Royal College of Music, culminating with the Suite for Violin and Pianoforte, Op. 6 and Britten’s arrangement of There is a Willow Grows Aslant a Brook, composed by his teacher Frank Bridge and heard on disc here for the first time. Further world premieres include the substantial Introduction and Allegro for piano trio, The Moon for violin and piano, and Allegro for solo piano. Britten’s Opus 1, the Sinfonietta — heard here in its rarely-played original version — completes the program, offering a glimpse into the lesser-known early output of this celebrated composer.

Truro Cathedral Choir Christopher Gray: director Luke Bond: organ STANFORD: For lo, I raise up • WALFORD DAVIES: A Short Requiem • PARRY: Songs of Farewell • VAUGHAN WILLIAMS: Lord, thou hast been our refuge “Outstanding performances.” — Gramophone A collection of intense and powerful English choral works all written during, or shortly after the end of, the First World War. Each work reflects its composer’s response to the conflict, from the turbulent start of Stanford’s For lo, I raise up, written shortly after the start of the war, to Vaughan Williams’ paean of thanksgiving Lord, thou hast been our refuge, written for a service at St. Paul’s Cathedral in 1921. This recording, beautifully sung by the choir of boys and men of Truro Cathedral, includes the rarely-recorded A Short Requiem by Walford Davies, written “in sacred memory of all those who have fallen in the war.” Also included are Parry’s six magnificent Songs of Farewell, largely written during 1914–1915, but not performed in their entirety until 1919, a year after Parry’s death.

In all likelihood these sonatas were written by Handel when he was around 11 years old, in 1696. At the time, he readily wrote for the oboe, which was, by his own admission, his favorite instrument; consequently, these sonatas were long considered to be works for two oboes. Yet, the use of double strings in the first movement of the third sonata leads us to believe that the handwritten composition was for oboe and violin, two richly contrasting voices with complementary tones. PLAYABLE IN ALL CD PLAYERS. For optimal sound, use compatible surround sound system. 25
