Rock balladeers Christian Kiefer, Matthew Gerken, and Jefferson Pitcher have performed a remarkable feat. They have composed and recorded 43 songs, one for each of the past and current presidents of these United States. Most songs were written as part of the 2007 RPM “Album in a Month” Challenge, but after the challenge ended they decided to finish the songs and sought out other artists to assist with the endeavor. They also plan on writing a song about our 44th president, available for free download from Standard’s website, once we know who it is going to be.

AIDS WOLF

Press Quotes

CITIES OF GLASS

“AIDS Wolf are easily one of the best bands in the city right now. Discordance still rules their roost, but more prog is rearing its head—that both teases and startles.” — Montreal Mirror

Selling Points • Produced by Weasel Walter (The Flying Luttenbachers, XBXRX, Lake of Dracula). • AIDS Wolf will be touring throughout 2008. • Promotional posters available for display. • International press and radio campaign. • Ads in Signal To Noise, The Wire, Skyscraper, and more.

Overview The Nine Principles of AIDS Wolf: 1. Maintain A Daily Ritual. Music is like breathing, eating, sleeping, pissing, and, with any luck, fucking. Music must be a physical need and a mental compulsion. 2. Live Aesthetic Immersion. There is no reason a sonic composition cannot be inspired by or contribute to a drawing, a tasty curry, or one’s choice of socks. 3. When In Doubt, Bum Them Out. If you can’t convert ‘em, make ‘em run crying and holding their ears. 4. Get In The Van. 5. Seek Strength Through Strength. Gear’s gotta be carried, sleep must be forsaken, and tours have to be survived. 6. Join The Family. Camaraderie with other bands is not only inspiring but also serves as a vital metrics by which to measure one’s own perceived worth. 7. Allow For Sonic Fields Of Nothing. The use of negative space in music creates new dynamics, abstracts the obvious, and challenges both the creator and the audience. 8. Lift Anchor And Set Sail. De-anchoring compositions by dispensing with a bass guitar allows AIDS Wolf to make rhythm the central feature of its performances. 9. Become The Weird Punks. Remember when punk was weird and weird was punk? Destroy genre straitjackets and move out of the comfortable. Now that you have committed these principles to memory, we encourage further study through Cities of Glass, the second album from AIDS Wolf. Once immersed in these tenets, you can be assured of finding failure and misery as you bring them with you into the wider world.

nail welcomes radar recordings to its roster! Radar Recordings is a collective of independent artists founded in Boston by Will Benoit and Mike Repasch-Nieves, who draw from their experience at labels such as TVT Records, Hydra Head Records, Century Media, and Vagrant Records to represent this family. The artists who make up the Radar community can be found all over the map, brought together by common beliefs, goals, and a hope to remind people that something else is out there.

Press Quotes “Adai defies any preconceived notion of a two-piece anything: hellishly loud, terrifically slow, strikingly abrasive, yet wholly and implacably melodic.” — The Onion

Selling Points • A priority artist for Radar Recordings. • Cornerstone Publicity targeting metal, punk, rock, and mainstream sites including Pitchfork for an MP3 world premiere and a Stereogum Band to Watch feature. • Posters and other POP promotional items available upon request. • Over 80,000 plays/downloads courtesy of online music sites. • Ads with Alarm.

Adai I Carry Genre: Metal Label: Radar Recordings CD: RDE 115 Price Code: G (SRP $8.99) Jewel Case; Box Lot 30 NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA

Overview Adai is a textbook example of how to do it right in today’s tumultuous music business. After recording I Carry with one of metal’s most in-demand producers, Kurt Ballou (Converge, Cave In, Genghis Tron), Adai has been hitting the road hard, touring with label mates Caspian, Junius, and Constants. From working with Ballou to tracking down Seldon Hunt (The Melvins, ISIS, High On Fire) to design their album art, this band clearly loves what they do.

Selling Points • Over half a million plays and downloads to date, with an average of 500 plays per day courtesy of online music sites. • This record is being promoted on metal, rock, punk, alternative, indie, and mainstream sites via blogs, A/V links, and reviews.

Overview Following a co-headlining tour in Fall 2007, Boston’s definitive post-rock bands Constants and Caspian decided to commemorate the successful outing by recording two previously unreleased tracks. To show solidarity, Philip Jamieson of Caspian appears on “…Passage” and both songs were recorded by Constants’ guitarist/vocalist Will Benoit. To celebrate the release, both bands, along with label mates Junius, reunited for a spring tour down to SXSW. They performed at the Radar Recordings/Sargent House finale party at Red 7, headlined by Constants and Russian Circles (Suicide Squeeze).

Press Quotes “Bursting with Beatlesque harmonies and chunky ’70s grooves (check out the horn work on ‘Wake Up Irene’), the Don Was-produced Mommyheads is a fab intro to these up-and-comers.” — Entertainment Weekly “Plaintive, genuine pop music featuring superb vocals and great arrangements.” — Babysue “Put simply, it is a sorry shame that this [band] did not receive greater recognition at the time of its release and any fan of power pop, progrock, or indie pop should make every effort to search out this superlative [band].” — All Music Guide

STREET DATE SEPTEMBER 9, 2008

• First album in 10 years from these underground cult pop favorites, featuring the original lineup. • Produced and engineered by Adam Cohen. • Three-month press and radio promotion through Bladen County Media.

Overview First Mommyheads album in 10 years! Last album was the self-titled Geffen release in 1997, produced by Don Was. You’re Not a Dream features the same lineup, and the same great pop music. The Mommyheads released five albums between 1989 and 1997, each on a different label and each marking the upward progression of the band, from inchoate Beefheart-esque odd pop to a solid boom of Beatlesesque grandeur. This new album sees the band in top form and is a perfect complement to the Geffen release. The band will play a string of shows in September, culminating in their appearance at Portland’s MusicFestNW. The Mommyheads were an American indie pop band circa 1987–1998. Starting in New York City as the brainchild of singer Adam Cohen (later changed to Adam Elk), the band produced a string of quirky and highly inventive releases on various independent labels, most notably Simple Machines. Their music has been compared to XTC. They relocated to San Francisco in 1990, released one of the best pop albums of the decade—Bingham’s Hole—in the mid-’90s, and were subsequently signed to Geffen Records in 1997, producing a single album for the label before breaking up in 1998.

Press Quotes “The sound of D+ stumbling on clarity, an emphasis on music-making over the music product: more verb, less noun please. Wit and intellect are rarely wrapped in such sluggish, minimalistic beauty.” — Tiny Mix Tapes “Lunsford, Blau, and Elverum are too creative to let one album sum up the work of D+. Consider On Purpose more of a refresher on what makes D+ infectious as you sit and wait for a sign of new life from the notsupergroup.” — Electronic Voice Phenomenon “These 15 tracks may qualify as ‘shambling’—an irresistibly overused term when it comes to indie rock—but there’s enough charm, sincerity, and insight throughout On Purpose to smooth over the rough patches.” — Seattle Sound

Selling Points • D+ is Karl Blau, Phil Elverum (Mt. Eerie/The Microphones), and Bret Lunsford (Beat Happening). • Blau will release a new solo album, Nature’s Got Away, through K Records in September 2008. • Gorgeous silk-screened and letter-pressed recycled packaging. • Doublescoop PR hired to promote the album to national and independent press. • Ads with Arthur and Yeti.

Overview

D+ What Is Doubt For? Genre: Alt Rock Label: Knw-Yr-Own CD: KNW 84 Price Code: O (SRP $13.99) Arigato Pak; Box Lot 30 NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA

With their sixth proper release (seven if you include the rarities, hits, and live tracks comp On Purpose), D+ continues further down their path of minimalism. Each record strips bare another layer of Bret Lunsford’s musings on the world in which we live in. What Is Doubt For? is perhaps the barest and darkest incarnation of D+ yet. Recorded mostly in Phil Elverum’s living room, the songs were played into one microphone—one track—mono. What Is Doubt For? lives up to its title and asks you to do the same.

• First solo release since Honeycut’s 2006 debut The Day I Turned To Glass (Quannum Projects). • Produced by Bart Davenport and Kelley Stoltz (Sub Pop). • Numerous 2007 festival appearances as frontman of Honeycut, including Bumbershoot, Treasure Island, Virgin, Download, Noise Pop, and SXSW. • Honeycut song “Exodus Honey” was used for a 2007 iMac ad campaign and Apple’s OS X Leopard. • Previous guest appearances on albums by Preston School of Industry, Persephone’s Bees, and Greyboy, the latter including a duet with Sharon Jones. • Print and new media publicity campaign by Press Here PR (Bright Eyes, Rilo Kiley). • Radio promotion by Terrorbird PR (Goldfrapp, Animal Collective). • Ads with Magnet, Vice, Daytrotter, and assorted blogs.

Overview You may have seen West Coast rock institution Bart Davenport fronting Quannum Records electro future-funk trio called Honeycut, or heard their song “Exodus Honey” in a recent iMac ad. Davenport is a singer-songwriter troubadour who wears his passionate love of West Coast pop on his sleeve. His songs have captivated audiences worldwide for years, dating back to his time as a front man for Oakland garage/ blues combo The Loved Ones. On Palaces, his fourth solo album and third for Oakland indie Antenna Farm, Davenport collaborates with kindred spirit Kelley Stoltz to deliver a work befitting an artist who has assimilated the influences of a lifetime’s worth of music-making. The album also features stellar contributions from some of the Bay Area’s top musicians, including Stoltz, Angelina Moysov (Persephone’s Bees), and Tony Sevener & Hervé Salters (Honeycut). Drawing from Brit folk, bossa nova, and even a touch of Philly soul, Davenport’s rich, nuanced vocals capture a cohesive fusion of traditional and indie pop, with lyrics that sparkle with plainspoken poetry and offer telling insights into the minds and hearts of his subjects. Press Quotes “Unambiguously focused on ’80s dance-rock … the Romantics execute this propulsive style as well as, say, Interpol.” — Washington Post “Yes, this is sweet candy … likely to feel either illicit or familiar, a guilty pleasure or a foregone conclusion. The Dark Romantics aren’t without a certain experimental element, but they flaunt some of the best hooks in indie-pop. “ — Alarm “A slithery pop effort that combines the nightlife’s frisson-producing energy, though without any of its smarmy underbelly, with slick modern indie-pop sounds.” — Aversion

Selling Points • Toured with Copeland, Murder By Death, the Mooney Suzuki, New London Fire, Scissors For Lefty, Discover America, and John Ralston. • Features Eric Collins and Dean Lorenz formerly of Denison Marrs (Floodgate Records), The Party People, John Ralston Band, Dashboard Confessional, and Starflyer 59. • Tours scheduled to cover Midwest (September), East Coast (October), and West Coast (November) upon release. • Songs played on MTV’s Next and Pimp My Ride, ABC’s Big Shots, FX’s Dirt, and CBS’s Moonlight. • Dave Clifford at Fanatic Promotion hired for print media PR. • Andy Silva at Fanatic Promotion hired for new media PR. • Dan Yocom at Fanatic Promotion hired for college/non commercial radio PR. • John Warden at Rive Video Promotion hired for video PR. • Extremely active MySpace page with 14,000+fans and 130,000+views. • Ads with Wonka Vision, Under the Radar, Big Takeover, Skyscraper, Paste, indie click banner ads, and more.

Overview The Dark Romantics is the brainchild of Eric Collins (ex-Denison Marrs, The Party People). With help from brother-in-law Dean Lorenz (ex-Denison Marrs, The John Ralston Band, The Party People), Collins combined what he learned from both projects to create The Dark Romantics: a darker, sexier, groovier sound. Heartbreaker is the bands’ highly anticipated sophomore effort—13 tracks of the rollicking guitar rock we’ve come to expect from this Lakeland, FL quintet. Heartbreaker boasts the most impressive vocals we’ve seen from Collins so far, and matches this with epic instrumentation and some crazyas-hell hooks that will absolutely find their way into your indie-rock head. Building on themes of love, pain and—ahem—heartbreak, this new record explores and perfects the very thing that make The Dark Romantics so romantic. Heartbreaker is powerful and bracing—quite possibly the most beautiful record of 2008.

Press Quotes “oRSo is more akin to a motley assemblage of New Orleans players and Appalachian hillbillies given the field-recording treatment by Brian Eno … taking in the whole recording is as fascinating as watching a documentary travelogue of exotic backwaters.” — Magnet “It’s not country, though it was recorded using all of the instruments you might find on a country album. It’s more like an attic barroom lullaby, the kind that evokes images of falling asleep under the stars above the prairie—or upon the wooden floors of a musty bordello.” — Splendid “Confidently but humbly swirls and hops on the periphery of musical pigeonholing, waiting especially and specifically for you.” — PopMatters

“oRSo creates a beguiling sound on their third release, a challenging mix of slippery violin, banjo, and saxophone with a warm folksiness at its center. It’s an open-ended type of music without clear resolutions, more often floating by on pensive clouds with loose, elastic elements of jazz and a painterly sense of sound.” — Stylus

Selling Points • oRSo is the project of Phil Spirito, former principal member of rex as well as a member of Loftus and HiM. • Features members of Califone, Icy Demons, Coast, and Herculaneum. • First Contraphonic album after a series of releases for Califone’s Perishable Records, and first album since 2004’s acclaimed My Dreams are Back and They Are Better Than Ever. • Extensive tours with Califone in US and Italy, resulting in large domestic and international following. • Full three-month national campaign by Skyscraper Media. • Full digital press campaign by Skyscraper Media and Contraphonic. • Extensive tour press to alternative weeklies and local media outlets. • National radio campaign by AAM. • Ads with Signal To Noise, The Wire, and Arthur.

Overview oRSo is the project of ex-rex member and oft-time HiM & Loftus contributor Phil Spirito. After a series of releases for Perishable Records, oRSo has teamed up with Contraphonic in this year of their decennial celebration. Building on the success of their previous release, which earned nearly universal acclaim and saw the band support Califone on extended domestic and Italian tours, oRSo’s hypnotic mix of tenor banjos, soft organs, muted brass, and calm harmonies are in full force on the majestic Ask Your Neighbor—like talking a walk in the woods while music drips off every leaf.

Press Quotes “Souls must have been sold for a performance like this.” — Bucketful of Brains “One of the best albums ever recorded from the post-psychedelic garage scene of the ’80’s.” — Perfect Sound Forever

Selling Points • Vietnam Veterans were one of the main attractions of the Neo-Psych movement and a major event in the psych scene of the mid-’80s. • This is likely the only Vets reissue, now available for the first time in the US and Canada. • The band’s legendary first two LPs were never available on CD. • On the Right Track Now, the band’s first real album, was recorded in 1983 and mixed in just three days. • Crawfish for the Notary, recorded in 1984, was originally released on Lolita Records.

Overview The Vietnam Veterans were the best psychedelic punk band of their time. Some people even said that they were the only real psychedelic group. When the Vets first emerged on the scene at the beginning of the ’80s, they were unlike any other band. To them, psychedelic music meant free human beings playing for free human beings. Eventually, the Vets decided to split after five years of communal life, six albums, and a series of unforgettable gigs. Mark Enbatta was the originator, the voice, the guitar, and the pen of the Veterans. Raised on LSD, he believes in a world of love and freedom. This man is a fighter, an anarchist, and everything the right wing doesn’t like. He gives his life every time he writes or sings, and anyone with a heart and a soul can feel it.

Press Quotes “An extraordinarily rich compositional sensibility—to say nothing of a delicate touch.” — Time Out New York “Without exception, Yamamoto’s compositions are emotionally arresting and appealingly original.” — All About Jazz “Yamamoto’s ensemble work combines buoyancy and brawn, and her solos pivot effortlessly between blues-infused grittiness and lyrical brightness.” — Point of Departure

Selling Points • Eri Yamamoto’s second 2008 release as leader on AUM Fidelity is a rapid follow-up/partner to her exquisite Duolugue released in June 2008. • Redwoods features her immediately compelling and original compositions performed with her fully committed working trio. • When Yamamoto is not touring around the world, she and her trio perform every weekend at Arthur’s Tavern, a historic jazz club in New York’s Greenwich Village. • Service/promotion to national press/e-media, targeted regional press, and college/non-commercial radio by Improvised Communications. • Ads with All About Jazz (New York), Signal To Noise, and Point of Departure.

Overview Eri Yamamoto moved to New York from Kyoto in 1995. After hearing Tommy Flanagan perform in Central Park, the classically trained piano prodigy had a momentous revelation that her future would be with jazz music. She entered the prestigious jazz program at the New School and began playing regularly at the Avenue B Social Club, a popular spot among jazz musicians in the East Village. It was there that she deeply impressed Matthew Shipp (who recorded her last trio album on his Blue Series/ Thirsty Ear) and William Parker (who recently invited her into his Raining on the Moon ensemble). Her growth as a jazz player and composer over the last 10 years is truly phenomenal. AUM Fidelity quickly recorded two albums with her in early 2008, the first of which was the exquisite Duologue, released in June. The second, Redwoods, features her regular working trio of longtime compatriots David Ambrosio and Ikuo Takeuch. Yamamoto’s distinctly invigorating approach to the jazz trio, and her remarkable gift for indelible melodies, reaches yet another track-for-track high.

MIJ Yodeling Astrologer Genre: Folk/Psych Label: ESP-Disk’ CD: ESP 1098 Price Code: M (SRP $14.99) Digipak; Box Lot 30

When Bernard Stollman found MIJ (a.k.a. Jim Holmberg) yodeling by the fountain in Washington Square Park on a hot summer afternoon in 1969, Holmberg explained that an auto accident had impaired his hearing. But it had also altered his perception, enabling him to do things he did not understand, but that worked musically. With Onno Scholtze’s help, he explored multiple reverb to provide a series of echoes for his yodeling.

Overview Early recording (1967) of Eastern European free improvisation, which maintained a strong tension between restraint and the all-out blowing of its Western relatives. Though more traditional postbop inspirations are evident, there is the beautiful sound of struggle and attainment of a very free, individual sound. A must for anyone interested in European jazz and the history of its relationship with the ’60s American New Thing movement.

Callers Fortune Genre: Alt Rock/Folk Label: Western Vinyl CD: WVR 52 Price Code: M (SRP $14.99) Cardboard Wallet; Box Lot 40 NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA

The 11 songs on Fortune channel a temporal sense of place and hope over despair. Throughout the album Sara Lucas’ voice and Ryan Seaton’s guitar are seamlessly interwoven, creating a haunting and soulful kind of magic. With the wounded perseverance of Karen Carpenter and the vulnerable, tough-as-nails courage and acceptance of Heart’s Ann Wilson, Lucas’ voice is rich and unforgettable. Seaton’s guitar work is equally engaging, as he masterfully delivers beautiful and unusual chords, gritty distortion, and even intricate flourishes that call to mind the ever-impressive Tinariwen.

• Fourth album from established, highly respected Portland band. • Compelling back-story is pitch-worthy to mainstream and music outlets. • Superb press history, with positive coverage in nearly every major US music magazine. • Live appearances handled by William Morris Agency. • Excellent tour history including dates and tours with The Shins, The National, Nine Inch Nails, Wire, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks, and more. • Full national press and online campaigns through Indie Outlaw. • National college radio campaign by Fanatic Promotion. • Creation of video assets for mainstream outlets and viral use.

Overview The long-awaited album from one of music’s most uniquely inventive and best kept secrets! Following releases on Touch and Go and Yep Roc Records, and shows with the likes of Wire, Nine Inch Nails, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The National, The Shins, Stephen Malkmus, and Slint, The Standard signed to V2 Records (White Stripes, Grandaddy) in 2007. They worked tirelessly throughout the year to record their fifth full-length effort, Swimmer. In January 2007, V2 Records’ US and Canada branches announced that they were “undergoing restructuring.” Now, The Standard’s much anticipated Swimmer in one of the first releases on Partisan Records. Swimmer reflects the wholly distinctive collaborative songwriting of Jay Clarke, Rob Oberdorfer, Robby Duncan, and Tim Putnam. The album is centered on Putnam’s emotive disarming vocals/guitar, Clarke’s beautiful constructed keyboards/piano, and Oberdorfer and Duncan’s accompanying rhythmic movements, at once minimal and full. Like many of their previous albums, it is a slow burn that, over time, reveals a dark, poetic, innovative body of work that is hard to ignore.

HOLY SONS

Press Quotes

DECLINE OF THE WEST

“Uniquely dark songs.” — Time Out New York “Holy Sons consists only of Emil Amos, and his music is full of gorgeous keening and emotional subtlety—every quiet wail, guitar strum, and tap on the high hat is delicately balanced and perfect.” — Portland Mercury “A musician right at home in a psychedelic maelstrom.” — PopMatters

Selling Points • Features Emil Amos of Om and Grails. • Strong presence via touring and collaboration with well-known artists. • First release of expanded 15-song apocalyptic masterpiece. • Supporting Scout Niblett on tour in Fall 2008. • Full national press and online campaigns through Indie Outlaw. • National college radio campaign by Fanatic Promotion. • Cross-promotion with Sub Pop Records and Important Records via Om and Grails releases, respectively.

Overview Decline of the West represents a vital intersection of style and method in Emil Amos’ (Om, Grails) songwriting and production, combining his genre-hopping tendencies and no-rules mixing methods with the more hook-driven, straight-to-the-jugular phrasing that he has been honing for the last 15 years. Holy Sons’ minimalist avant-folk sound journeys through formats as varied as dub, church-hymn, slow-jam, tape-collage, and hip-hop beats ornamented with obtuse banjo-sitar runs, all performed with an inspired punk spirit. The music is organic, dark, and beautiful, documenting a constantly evolving songwriter who possesses a unique gift for distinctive and prolific artistry. His musical resume reads like a dream wish list for most musicians. Outside of Holy Sons, Amos is the new member in the globally renowned Om (Sub Pop/Southern Lord), and a producer/songwriter of his other band Grails (Important Records/ Temporary Residence/Neurot Recordings). He has performed both on stage and collaboratively with the likes of Daniel Johnston, Will Oldham, Damo Suzuki, Jandek, J Mascis, Smog, Polvo, Quasi, Sir Richard Bishop, Scout Niblett, Six Organs, Devendra Banhart, and Mark Kozelek. Decline of the West is named after and conceptually began with Oswald Spengler’s pessimistic assessment that the Western culture is revealing the classic signs of a societies’ decay and end. The record was recorded at Amos’ home studio in late-night recording sessions that stretched over three years, during which he played every instrument and then mixed and re-mixed each track. Decline of the West is his most stylistically varied effort to date, and a linchpin of Amos’ catalogue.

Press Quotes “Conifer engage in slow-burning, gradually building metallic indie postrock exercises. Somewhere between the creeping epic dirge of Neurosis, Pelican, and ISIS, Seam/Slint-esque post-rock, and the wonky sludge of Harvey Milk and Cable, these guys also bust out some wicked prog dexterity, complex riffs and brontosaurus-stomp stoner pummel, massive monstrous downer gunk à la Khanate and Buried At Sea, bizarre goblin vocals, pretty melodic indie passages, gorgeous celestial electronics, and so much more. It’s fucking earth shaking, that’s for sure.” — Crucial Blast

“Conifer sleepily trawl through the dark recesses of post rock, taking the languorous slow burning churn of bands like Slint or Seam or Bastro, all dark and brooding, simple and insistent, and stretching the riffs and melodies into expansive stretches of moody melancholy, swathed in Pink Floydian swoosh and whirl before dropping the bomb. Massive downtuned guitars explode, splitting post rock atoms into clumps of corrosive riffage, peppered with raspy howls and screeching banshee melodies, sometimes gaining momentum and becoming unstoppable exercises in epic doomy drone-metal à la Neurosis or ISIS, sometimes becoming glacial explorations into slow motion doom à la Khanate, and other times employing distorted ghostly computer vocals and buzzing psychedelia into Butthole Surfers-like sonic freakouts.” — Aquarius Records

Selling Points • LP limited to 500 copies, with 200 on colored vinyl. • Over the last six years Conifer have established a substantial underground buzz. Crown Fire is their first record to receive the substantial attention that the band deserves. • The only vocals on the record are Oxbow’s Eugene Robinson fronting the album’s final 13-minute epic. • Large-scale press campaign. • Ads with The Wire.

Overview Though Conifer has received quite a bit of critical praise, they’ve somehow managed to live off the grid for the past six years. With Crown Fire, the band will finally get the exposure they deserve. Mixing post-rock, kraut-rock, metal, and psychedelia, Conifer has created a relentlessly driving and hypnotic masterpiece. Crown Fire’s only vocals are Oxbow’s Eugene Robinson fronting the album’s final 13-minute epic. Conifer has been writing primarily instrumental music with a lawless take on the styles from which they’ve taken cue. New content is found by way of augmenting brutality and suspense with time. The band seems to reckon with the notions of bands like Enemymine, Mogwai, or Grails while taking an approach that is entirely meditative (as opposed to premeditated). Minimal, ethereal passages are narcotically lengthened and crescendos of distortion are sustained well beyond the boundaries adhered to by many of their peers. Hailing from the capital of the heavy state of Maine, Conifer has an extremely close relationship with fellow travelers Ocean. These two groups have shared a lot over the years, including members, tour transportation, and practice spaces. Though different in sound, they’re quite kindred in spirit and obviously Conifer is essential for anyone who loved Ocean’s Here Where Nothing Grows.

Press Quotes “This is the perfect metallic drifting off music, almost like they’ve discovered some new genre—sludge-ambient, doom-age, whatever you decide to call it, it’s pretty amazing, and fans of all things slow motion, downtuned and yes, heavy will dig this big time.” — Aquarius Records “The sound is sludgy and the pace snail-like but subtle. Within its monochrome scheme of blackness, and yet more blackness as its slow, slow, riffs unfurl, there are small variations in tone. Such is the hermetically sealed inwardly directed feel of Tecumseh’s sound that these tiny variations are like tiny rafts in an otherwise empty sea. And in the end the listening experience isn’t some feat of endurance but strangely calming, it’s blackness like a vast lake of crude oil with only the faintest of ripples disturbing it’s surface.” — The Wire

Selling Points • LP limited to 500 copies, with the first 200 on colored vinyl. • Tecumseh has toured with Thrones, Acre, and Pussygut and shared bills with Yellow Swans, Sixxes, Michael Gondreau, Damion Romero, Andrea Parkins, Wolves in the Throneroom, and many others. • Promotional mailing by Important Records. • Ads with The Wire.

Overview Heavy drone/heavy meditation. Be inside the sounds. Formed in 2004, Tecumseh creates drone metal of the heaviest variety, although with more forward movement than some of their peers and with the addition of cold electronic hiss. Using two basses, electronics, percussion, and guitar Tecumseh wrap themselves and their listeners in a warm sonic meditative slow motion blanket woven from their skilled use of sound and space. Avalanche and Inundation was recorded in Winter 2008 with Jeremy Romagna (Yellow Swans, Trees, Silentist).

Important Records is quite pleased to present this split release consisting of two new drone works from Pauline Oliveros and Eleh. Oliveros, an early American minimalist who has pioneered the technique of Deep Listening, has created a new work exclusively for this release. “Drifting Depths” is a new improvised piece made on a harmonica processed through Oliveros’ Expanded Instrument System. Eleh’s side, also exclusive to this vinylonly release, is a super-slow melodic drone full of stillness, tension, and relief.

Press Quotes “The subterranean ripples of tone and the glacial pace at which they unfold calls to mind Earth and Sunn O)))’s mute explorations of the dark dynamics of depth when extracted from rock’s edges.” — The Wire

Press Quotes “At times the record approaches pop bliss (albeit Sigur Rós style, not Beach Boys), or cinematic soundtrack vibes, but the album also has fully-conceived orchestral underpinnings with recurring themes running throughout. Brimming with pastoral beauty, Float proves 21-year-old Broderick to be one of the most promising modern classical composers on the scene, his emotive soundscapes comparable to the works of Michael Nyman, Max Richter, and Harold Budd. Esteemed company for sure, but he is that good.” — Other Music “Peter Broderick is the embodiment of ‘gifted.’ A true multiinstrumentalist, he can be heard playing everything from piano and violin to saw and theremin on records by everyone from Laura Gibson, Loch Lomond, and Dolorean to Norfolk & Western and his own chamberfolk outfit (with Justin Ringle and sister Heather Broderick), Horse Feathers.” — Willamette Week

Selling Points • Peter Broderick is a prolific rising star, one-third of the Horse Feathers, and the secret multi-instrumental weapon of popular Danish electro-acoustic troupe Efterklang. • Has played with M. Ward, Laura Gibson, Loch Lomond, Norfolk & Western, and Dolorean. • Released several solo instrumental records in the past year on influential labels Type, Kningdisc, and Rumracket. • Upcoming US tour. • Full PR campaign servicing over 100 media outlets. • Full college radio mailing via AAM. • Serviced to a list of over 250 blogs. • Ads with Daytrotter, Under The Radar, Pitchfork, Skyscraper, and more.

Overview Home is a collection of folk songs recorded at the end of 2007 and the beginning of 2008. In late 2007, Peter Broderick toured all around Europe with the Danish ensemble Efterklang, playing violin and opening the shows as a solo act. His recorded work up to this time had been primarily instrumental, but as he began to play live shows, he discovered that he also had a passion for singing. And so, when he had a break from touring at the end of the year, he set out to make an album that was the opposite of his previous piano and string-based recordings. With Home, he has made an album with neither of these instruments. The result is based around layers of vocals and guitars. Recorded in various places in various parts of the world, it is an album about finding a home. Written, performed, recorded, and produced by Broderick himself, and mixed with his good friend and sound wizard from Efterklang, Mads Brauer.

Selling Points • Baltimoroder is a DJ and producer in south Boston holding down residencies at Middlesex Lounge as part of Heartthrob and Make It New. He is also a founding member of Thunderdome, which has hosted guests such as Trouble & Bass, The Bangers, Scottie B, and Flosstradamus. • In addition to six years experience DJing, he has recently remixed Alter Ego + Lil Keke, Big Boi, Crime Mob, Trina & Luda, and Quad City DJs. • DJ Die Young holds down residencies at three prominent Boston events (Basstown, Solid! and Make It New), and is one of the most sought-after DJs in Boston, opening for Robyn, Lifelike, Alan Braxe, Drop The Lime, The Field, and Diplo. • US tour for Fall 2008. • Numerous remixes planned for release in coordination with the record. • Press promotion handled externally. Service to 150+ publications (print and digital). • College radio campaign.

Overview Producing original tracks and tweaking remixes to perfection, Boston’s DJ Die Young (née Jamie Michalski) has come a long way in the last seven years.“I’ve always loved ’80s pop since my mother played it to me to get me to go to sleep when I was a little kid,” he says. And although his DJ name may seem morbid, it actually comes from the ’80s song “Don’t Let Me Die Young” by Duran Duran guitarist Andy Taylor. What usually comes off the 24-year-old’s table today is French touch, house, electro, and minimal—party music. He’s good with a sequencer, a keyboard, midi triggers, and lately, the tambourine. Fans of Low and Slowdive would certainly be proud. Lately, there’s been an eruption of talent in Boston, the city that hovers between the sonic skyscrapers of New York and Montreal—and one in which you’re not considered a “DJ” just for spinning records. Personality and productions skills are a major part, as well as getting involved with local promoters, photographers, and other artists. Being a fundamental part of Basstown and a resident at both Make It New and Solid! with his friend and fellow DJ Baltimoroder, DJ Die Young is the kind of DJ that constantly observes and absorbs with precision. Aiming high and hitting his marks one by one, Die Young is now advancing his efforts to become more than just a hot Boston DJ.

Fellow DJ Baltimoroder was born out of necessity. The story begins in Illinois, where Baltimoroder (a.k.a. Erik Pearson) abused cheap Yamaha keytars and Fisher-Price turntables. In high school, punk shows, record stores, and raw performance spaces filled his time. Then it was off to college, Los Angeles, and the mighty KXLU radio station, where he absorbed avant-garde sounds, ambient music, and experimental artists. The turning point came after a cross-country trek to Boston and a lowkey house party. He took the decks, mixing tracks he had never heard into a swell that kick-started a dance floor. From that night on, the floor never stopped growing. Baltimoroder mixes aggressively and flawlessly in any genre, and a chance meeting with David Day—local promoter and European techno aficionado—took him from the bedrooms to the clubs.

Press Quotes “Fast and furious, the All Girl Summer Fun Band really packs a punch.” — Greil Marcus, Interview Magazine “AGSFB glues the ironic quirkiness of Jonathan Richman and The Modern Lovers to the upfront rock ‘n’ roll rumble of The Ramones, wind it all the way up and set their creation free.” — The Wire “There’s a substantial progression from AGSFB’s first outing; the playing’s more forceful, the harmonies more confident, the lyrics more sophisticated. Truly, in AGSFB’s realm, summer lasts all year.” — Mojo

• Established fan base over the past ten years with previous releases All Girl Summer Fun Band and 2 (K Records) as well as Summer Of ’98 (Magic Marker). • Has toured the US and Europe and played with bands such as Mates of State, Sleater Kinney, The Gossip, The Shins, Modest Mouse, The Thermals, The Softies, Dub Narcotic Sound System, and Puffy Ami Yumi. • CD packaged in a full color digipak (no plastic used). • Photos by Todd Baxter and design/layout by Jen Sbragia. • Will play in the US, Europe, and the UK in support of the album. • Publicity handled by Joan Hiller of Riot Act Media.

Overview For ten years, the All Girl Summer Fun Band has blasted gritty, sunny pop gems out of rainy Portland with a fervor, enthusiasm, and stamina that is quintessentially Pacific Northwestern. Their newest LP, Looking Into It, follows 2003’s 2 (K Records) and is distilled, concentrated AGSFB. Jen Sbragia (The Softies), Kim Baxter (Cherry Ice Cream Smile), and Kathy Foster (The Thermals, Hutch & Kathy) don’t hold back the jams. Looking Into It is not only a stunning pop album filled with the band’s signature crunch-fuzz guitars and dead-on melodic sense, but lyrically, AGSFB bravely confronts issues such as greed, death, getting fired, relationship dynamics, and new love. This is AGSFB at their rawest, brightest, and best—and they know it. The band worked on several of these songs for years, meticulously writing and rewriting until they knew they had accomplished what they set out to do. Recording the album entirely in Baxter’s basement studio gave the band the ability to do without constrictive studio schedules and the monetary demands that come with studio recording, and allowed the band members to push themselves musically, especially in terms of handling songwriting with a new emphasis on total collaboration. The album’s conception, execution, capture, and release embody what is incredible and vital about DIY creation—AGSFB has made a stunning record exactly the way they wanted. Enjoy. ALSO AVAILABLE

Press Quotes “Such songs as ‘Wait a While,’ ‘Miss Me When I’m Gone,’ and ‘Down My Spine’ are simply amazing.” — Rolling Stone (Italy) “Italian duo The Mojomatics blends the sounds of rockabilly, rock & roll, and the darker pop of the fifties with knowingly fuzzy guitars … think Gene Vincent produced by Steve Albini and you’re heading in the right direction.” — Subbacultcha (UK) “Damn best record I’ve heard in a long, long time.” — Maximum Rock ‘n’ Roll

Overview The Mojomatics are a two-man band based in Venice, Italy, formed in 2003 by MojoMatt (vocals, guitar, harmonica) and DavMatic (drums, percussion). Soon after the band formed, they released an EP called Devil Got My Woman on Shake You Ass Records and began to tour Europe relentlessly, opening for such incredible bands as Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, The (International) Noise Conspiracy, and Old Time Relijun. In 2004, The Mojomatics got in touch with German label Alien Snatch, who agreed to release their debut album A Sweet Mama Gonna Hoodoo Me, sixteen swampy, blues-encrusted punk tunes with a lot of rootsy pop harmonies and rambling country edges. Songs For Faraway Lovers was their second full-length, self-produced and released by Alien Snatch in 2006. The Mojomatics poured out even more hooks on this record, revealing their folk and blues roots with some typical American folk ballads. The band also embarked on a great European tour, opening for such bands as Black Lips, Arctic Monkeys, Gogol Bordello, and Radio Birdman. The band’s new record, Don’t Pretend That You Know Me, will be released by Ghost Records in September 2008. The Mojomatics heap together hillbilly blues, old country, folk, and bluegrass; inject it with the melodies of British Invasion pop; and fire it all out with the break-neck energy of the best garage/punk/rock ‘n’ roll.

Overview San Francisco’s The Aimless Never Miss make their debut with a dynamite package of guitar distortion and bittersweet vocals. Led by the enigmatic Jonny Latimer, this guitar-led outfit delivers a heady pop that’s as subtle as a time bomb. Already making big waves on the West Coast, The Aimless Never Miss is ready to spread that success across the nation. What began as a solo project for singer/songwriter Jonny Latimer soon grew into a full-on band with a rotating cast of musicians and songwriters contributing to the mix. After a 2006 relocation to San Francisco, a more consistent lineup emerged, along with a continuing series of successes. Fans of Kevin Shields will not be disappointed; however there is also an accessibility-meets-epic sound reminiscent of Muse, Wolf Parade, and Arcade Fire. Fans of this sound have likely caught the band’s live show, which engages the audience through visuals created by Luke Judd. But despite their live show extras, music is never a secondary thing to the band. Alongside Latimer is a group of seasoned musicians who all make their mark on the distinctive Aimless sound, including artists who have relationships with other Bay Area projects such as Built for the Sea, Ted the Block, Good City Lie Still, and The Rum Diary offshoot Shuteye Unison. The Aimless Never Miss are the first signing to legendary indie label Devil in the Woods since the label re-launched with the establishment of a new co-operative, the Lower Class Revolt. Through free digital compilations, monthly shows, and providing an easy means for bands to produce merchandise, Devil in the Woods and the Lower Class Revolt are seeking to weather the current music industry storm while providing the means for artists to remain innovative and productive.

A founding member of beloved Midwestern hippie jam band Mountain Bus, Stephen Titra left that band in 1968 in order to devote himself to the singular vision of O.W.L. Of Wondrous Legends was recorded at Chicago’s Universal Studios in 1971, but despite interest from a number of major labels, the gem went unreleased. Then, in 2004, a copy of one of the test pressings was unearthed in a Chicago junk shop. Following several years of collaborative efforts, Of Wondrous Legends now sees its first public release after some 35 years of obscurity.

Overview Fall 2008 marks the fifth anniversary of Locust Music’s inaugural Wooden Guitar compilation, an inspired excursion into the creases and folds of modern deltadelica and a thinly veiled homage to the great Takoma compilations of yore in which guitarists could sit back, work those muscles in their fingers, and go the extra musical distance. Four of the great worldwide guitarists—Germany’s Steffen Basho-Junghans, Seattle’s Sir Richard Bishop (Sun City Girls), Japan’s Tetuzi Akiyama, and Virginia’s Jack Rose—give us a fresh look at a very old instrument with gloriously stretched-out solo compositions.

Track Listing Jack Rose: Red Horse • Steffen Basho-Junghans: A North Thuringian Raga • Tetuzi Akiyama: Time Between • Steffen Basho-Junghans: Smiling Penguins • Sir Richard Bishop: Corpuscle

Press Quotes “Their so-retro-it’s-fresh sound is a throwback to the storm of raw and rowdy outlaw country that rolled through Nashville in the early ’70s.” — Detroit Free Press

Selling Points • Constantly on the road, averaging more then 200 dates per year. • Have shared the stage with Dale Watson, Jack Ingram, Shooter Jennings, David Alan Coe, and Hank Williams III. • Mixed by Al Sutton (Sheryl Crow, Five Horse Johnson, Kid Rock). • National press, regional press, and e-media will be handled by Yarrr! PR.

Overview The roots of country music are despair, pain, sorrow, and anguish—feelings found in great abundance in the burnt-out ghost town of Flint, MI. With the classic themes of country music (drinking, prison, loving and leaving women) as the only options for the residents of Flint, Whitey and the boys have distilled the essence of country music into 150 proof melodies to help people forget their problems for a few hours. Look for them on the road this fall and remember: there are no flip-flops in country music, and there is no Margaritaville for outlaws.

Overview Kiss the Anus of a Black Cat has always been utterly fascinated with primitive savagery and heathen tactics. On this third full-length endeavor, they explore and recast their horror-filled doom theme in the light of current debates on modernity and globalization. Minimalist instrumentation and hypnotic ultra-dramatic vocals are wrapped in equal parts doom-ridden heresy, while the percussion is stripped down of hazy emotions and stretched into a pure vessel of magical strength. A divine doom folk/rock cloud that shares apocalyptic interests with such visionaries as Current 93, Woven Hand, Richard Youngs, Comus, and other uplifting pagan psych-folk.

The debut EP from Maninkari features cinematic, mesmerizing music. Dense drumming and frenzied strings wind into tense soundscapes of slow burning shimmer. Like Godspeed plays the Dirty Three, or maybe Angus Maclise jamming with Chris Corsano.

Maninkari’s first full release is a gorgeous, soft cacophony of epic post rock drift and minimal jazzy shuffle. Using light tribal percussion clouds and swirling melodies, songs subtly and dynamically build, flow and spiral.

Fascinating sonic collages marry post-punk dynamics, experimental energy, exorcist ritual music, and an unusual amount of tender soul. Debut full-length album is more outspoken than ever, with the right amount of hooks, subtlety, and youthful energy.

STREET DATE SEPTEMBER 23, 2008

Debut EP brings four beautifully honest songs, where melody seems to be in a constant fight with loud guitars, noise, and vaguely neurotic lyrics. References are varied, but all reviewers agree on one thing: this is a band to keep an eye on.
