dubmission re c o rds p. 42 Dubmission Records has blazed a trail of warped woofers since the mid ’90s, when the label launched with a trio of bass-heavy dubwise compilations. After releasing several favorably reviewed compilations—featuring the likes of Doof, Adelphi, Alpha & Omega, Hallucinogen, and Tribal Drift—the Dubmission crew began to concentrate on artist management, event promotion, and tour booking. However, after hearing Pitch Black’s Ape to Angel album, they decided to bring the label out of “retirement.” Since then, Dubmission has only gotten stronger, with several releases from Pitch Black in addition to International Observer’s second album, the critically lauded Heard. Dubmission Records comes to Allegro via Waveform.

Jason Marsalis returns after an eight-year absence with his leading debut on the vibraphone, called “the furthest-reaching and most compelling album of his career” by DownBeat. • It’s been eight years, but Jason Marsalis has a new record out. Called Music Update, it is indeed an update on what he has been up to since his last release, Music in Motion. One thing that has not changed is his love for drums. Translation: the opening track is “Guess Who’s Back?”—and the answer is “Discipline!” • Includes brand new “Discipline” tracks, the drum-overdubbed solos found on Marsalis’ previous CDs. “Discipline Vacations in Asia” is influenced by Japanese taiko drumming, while “Discipline Mellows Out” showcases the more romantic aspect the instrument. And finally, “Discipline Spotted Baby and Zutty at Studio 54” imagines a traditional New Orleans drummer getting down at the famous late ’70s New York nightclub. Musically, it combines New Orleans traditional and second-line drumming with, of all things, disco! • Marsalis is supported by a group of musicians he met at a residency at Florida State University: Austin Johnson on piano, Will Goble on bass, and David Potter on drums. • Press promotion by Two for the Show Media. Jason Marsalis: vibes, drums Austin Johnson: piano Will Goble: bass David Potter: drums • Guess Who’s Back? • Offbeat Personality • Ballet Class • Discipline Returns Once Again • Characters • Blues for the 29%ers (down to 19) • Discipline Vacations in Asia • Midnight Sun • Seven Come Eleven • Discipline Mellows Out • Durango Kid • Western Vacation Ranch • Discipline Spotted Baby and Zutty at Studio 54

“Music Update explodes from its first track, a short but intense drum number marked by a second-line beat-driven call to attention … the disc survives repeated plays, and at just under an hour, its biggest drawback is that it’s over too soon.” — DownBeat [HHHH ½] “The youngest musical Marsalis brother’s ‘update’ consists of his debut recording on vibes after nearly two decades of working and recording as a drummer. But Marsalis hedges his bet a bit, dangling five solo drum kit tracks around the eight quartet tracks on which he’s playing vibes with a formidable trio of young musicians he met at a residency at Florida State University.” — JazzTimes Key Markets: New Orleans (hometown), New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco

An incredible, heartwarming recording composed for Randy Brecker’s “homecoming,” celebrated with this suite composed by renowned Polish jazz pianist and film composer Wlodek Pawlik. • This disc tells an amazing story that began in 1994 when Randy Brecker met Wlodek Pawlik in Germany, when the award-winning Polish pianist played with the Western Jazz Quartet. This meeting would come into sharp focus 11 years later, when Randy’s brother Michael was diagnosed with leukemia and his family immediately started searching for a bone marrow donor. • Making contact with Pawlik, the family traced Brecker’s relatives to an area in Poland called Tykocin. In honor of this discovery, Pawlik wrote an orchestral/jazz suite about Randy’s “homecoming,” and although a donor was not found, the Breckers discovered their roots. The recording has already won several “Best of 2008” awards in Poland, and Brecker’s story was recently featured in Poland’s Newsweek. • Randy Brecker has been shaping the sound of jazz, R&B, and rock for more than four decades. His trumpet and flugelhorn performances have graced hundreds of albums by a wide range of artists. • Wlodek Pawlik has released 16 albums as a leader, and won numerous domestic and international music contests. He was honored as Jazz Musician of the Year by Warsaw’s legendary jazz club Akwarium. • NPR/Marian McPartland feature on Brecker will air in Fall 2009. • Service to over 200 jazz stations including NPR affiliates; to print media including Jazziz, Cadence, and DownBeat; and to various websites. The 32-minute masterpiece put Thomas on the map, and put avant-garde jazz on mainstream FM radio. • Liner notes by veteran rock journalist Gary Graff provide insight to Thomas’ career and how it intersects with Lea’s contemporary expression of “spiritual jazz.” • Lea’s previous releases have collectively scanned over six thousand units. • Long-term promotion plans will extend to Black History Month in February 2010 in conjunction with a historic Motéma release featuring master percussionists Babatunde Lea, Bujo Kevin Jones, Karl Potter, and Marvin Bugaloo Smith. • Comprehensive online and terrestrial PR campaign. “Studio Rivbea has been the scene of many dark, sweaty nights impossible to air condition, yet you could go there at midnight or 1 A.M. and be oblivious to the dense air while you were listening to sounds that you had never heard before. Once there, despite the heat, you usually didn’t want to leave.” — The Soho Weekly News, May 1976 “Recorded over ten days in May 1976 at Sam Rivers’s Studio Rivbea, this set (originally released as five albums) contains an overwhelming amount of truly beautiful jazz performances, by names recognizable to almost anyone with a serious interest in the music … This music’s vitality is timeless; these recordings should be heard by anyone with anything more than a glancing interest in jazz.” — Phil Freeman Key Markets: New York, Chicago, Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Boston, Philadelphia • An ECM Records press release on the Woodstock Jazz Festival said, “All of those players could have just stood up there for the moment to be thrilling. But as an added attraction they actually played together … They put on a show memorable for all time.” • The raw, live quality of these performances is balanced with a clarity of sound that makes the listener feel as though he were sitting at the edge of the stage. The compositions are mere launching pads for free flights of spontaneous, often breathtaking, invention. • One of Douglas Records’ best selling reissues, this set features—among other amazing selections—Anthony Braxton’s unforgettable interpretation of John Coltrane’s classic “Impressions,” an “All Blues” celebration featuring Pat Metheny at his best, and the intimacy and distinctive emotion displayed by duettists Chick Corea and Lee Konitz on “Round Midnight.” Chick Corea: piano Jack De Johnette: drums Miroslav Vitous: bass Lee Konitz: sax Anthony Braxton: sax Pat Metheny: guitar

• This all-time great seller from MJQ’s discography has been absent from American stores for many years. • Special six-page digipak reissue, never available in the US before, features stunning pictures of MJQ live. • Starting out as the rhythm section of Dizzy Gillespie’s 1946 orchestra, the MJQ evolved into one of the most eloquent and long-lived ensembles in the history of jazz. The group’s stability was a key factor in allowing John Lewis to achieve his goal of synthesizing jazz improvisation and formal compositional elements, sometimes drawn from the classical tradition, in a manner that seems totally natural and unforced. • As you will hear in this recording—their fourth appearance at the festical—all four members of the quartet are master musicians and highly skilled improvisers, and they play together with an extraordinary empathy that makes them a truly unified ensemble. • This best seller from Dizzy Gillespie’s discography has been absent from American stores for many years, and this special six-page digipak reissue has never been available in the US before. • Looking back at the 1963 Monterey Jazz Festival more than 45 years later, it’s hard not to see it as a precious moment of harmony cutting through the gathering dissonance that would come to dominate that turbulent decade. • On the closing number, singer Jon Hendricks launched the campaign song for the “Dizzy Gillespie for President” campaign, which started when 200,000 black and white Americans marched on Washington to support civil rights three weeks before Monterey. Gillespie admitted the publicity stunt and humorous value of the idea, but he also felt it could help promote genuine change. “Before his untimely death in March, Canadian blues guitarist Jeff Healey had been quite involved in jazz via band the Jazz Wizards (he played trumpet and clarinet). But he tracked this blues-rock CD in late 2007, and it’s an outstanding farewell … It’s a genuine pleasure to hear Healey’s fluid, incisive lead guitar again, and his bandmates are rock solid.” — Billboard “Originally intended to be a blues/rock tribute to his fans who loved that aspect of Jeff’s music, this CD instead ended up being a posthumous tribute to Jeff Healey himself, as he passed away about a month prior to its scheduled release date … If you’re a fan of Healey’s blues/rock guitar styling from the 1990s you won’t be disappointed by this CD. There’s loads of high-speed, scorching, overdriven, heavy guitar work here, the kind of which made Jeff’s reputation years ago.” — STL Blues Key Markets: Dallas, Houston, New York, Los Angeles, Nashville, Atlanta, Toronto

Luckily for us—and country music—it was a disastrous sojourn. He returned to making music with a stripped down sound that would earn him over 50 gold and platinum record awards! Track Listing: City of New Orleans • If You’ve Got The Money • Always on My Mind • Georgia On My Mind • Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain • Good Hearted Woman • Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground • To All The Girls I’ve Loved Before • Whiskey River • On The Road Again

Patsy Cline Honky Tonk Angel 10 classic hits including “Walkin’ After Midnight” and “A Poor Man’s Roses!” Since her tragic death at age 30, Patsy Cline has attained legendary status as the most popular female singer in the history of country music. No one was quite like her before, and no one has come along since. Her deeply romantic recordings and haunting voice have inspired scores of singers including Loretta Lynn, k.d. lang, Wynonna Judd, and Trisha Yearwood. Track Listing: Walkin’ After Midnight • Never No More • Turn The Cards Slowly • Lovesick Blues • Let The Teardrops Fall • Hungry For Love • A Poor Man’s Roses • Today • Tomorrow And Forever • Crazy Dream • If Only I Could Stay Asleep

The Everly Brothers Heartache & Harmony 10 Top 10 hits including #1s “Cathy’s Clown” and “Wake Up Little Susie!” The Everly Brothers defined the country infused rock and roll duo of the early rock era. The brothers are still the most successful duo on the Hot 100 singles chart. Their style of close, two-part harmonies made them early rock superstars and strongly influenced other rock groups of the era. The Everly Brothers are one of the few acts to be inducted into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Country Music Hall of Fame. Track Listing: Cathy’s Clown • All I Have to Do Is Dream • Wake Up Little Susie • Bye Bye Love • (‘Til) I Kissed You • Let It Be Me • When Will I Be Loved • Walk Right Back • Bird Dog • Crying In The Rain

The slaves came from different parts of Africa and spoke different languages, so their only common means of communication was music. Thus gwo ka came into being, as a form of artistic, intellectual, and spiritual expression. The all-female polyphonic and polyrhythmic choir Kalindi Ka, formed in Guadeloupe by women with musical backgrounds that include jazz and opera, brings a note of originality to the interpretation of the old songs of gwo ka. Ian Melrose & Kerstin Blodig Kelpie Kerstin Blodig and Ian Melrose strike a resonant chord together, teasing out the Celtic threads of Scotland and Scandinavia traditional music to weave a new fabric of sensual vocals, bluesy flute, and rhythm guitar. A Kelpie is a spirit in Scottish mythology that appears at the waterside disguised as a beautiful white horse. As the creature is found in both Celtic and Scandinavian mythology, it is a fitting symbol for the music created by Blodig and Melrose, who combine material from these two cultures with their own musical backgrounds and arrangements. This disc features children’s songs, poems, dances, fairy tales and ballads, as well as songs inspired by Jethro Tull and Dizzy Gillespie.
