Thirty-five years after their Suffolk debut, the revolution lives on for The Adicts. Their place in UK punk history has been solidified by the many anthems of their youth and a long history as a hard-touring band. One of the UK’s most popular ’80s punk bands, they haven’t lost their edge, or their cult following. The albums Songs of Praise (’81), Sound of Music (’82), and Smart Alex (’83) are punk rock standards, spawning three consecutive Top 15 UK Indie hits and a Top 100 UK Pop hit. Still donning white face and bowler hats, original conspirators “Monkey,” Pete, and “Kid”—along with longtime members Shahen, “Fiddle” Dan, and “Scruff”—dive headfirst into their fifth decade. On September 11, punks, droogs and rockers around the world will stand up and celebrate the release of All The Young Droogs, their tenth studio album!

Indiana’s She Does Is Magic have recorded a true time capsule of the current manifestation of a timeless Midwestern sound: the echoes of corn being detassled, the smell of dough frying beneath colored lights, the coolness of the autumn air, and the warmth of your true love’s sweater. If today’s revival of the ’90s revival of the ’70s revival of the ’50s taught us anything, it’s that rock and roll is here to stay. And She Does Is Magic make catchy, driving rock & roll with clean guitars worthwhile, meaningful, and fun again!

It might seem unlikely that Spencer Seim of Hella—known for aggressive, instrument-bending experimental rock—would be collaborating with Aaron Ross, a folk singer-songwriter with a rare ability to compose lyrics from a point of view much larger than his own. After their first collaboration recording Hella’s 2007 album There’s No 666 in Outer Space, Aaron and Spencer continued writing together as Solos. Recorded and produced by Guy Massey (The Beatles, Radiohead, Spiritualized), Solos’ debut album The Beast of Both Worlds showcases the duo’s vivid “classic” sound melded with modern songwriting sensibilities. Think Zeppelin meets MGMT … as ridiculous as that might sound.

The stripped-down, experimental psych of Helvetia (“hel-ve-tzia”) plays out like a series of snapshots: subtle, hazy, and gritty as hell. For their seventh album, the band has signed with Joyful Noise and produced the most focused and inspired tracks of their six-year history. Originating in Seattle and currently residing in Portland, Helvetia began in the aftermath of the group Duster (Up Records). With their new album, Nothing In Rambling, Helvetia’s sound has culminated in a cohesive balance of familiar and experimental. Self-produced by Albertini and recorded on a Teac 1/2 inch reel-to-reel 8-track, Nothing In Rambling will be released September 11th on LP and CD, followed by a US tour with Built To Spill. Genre: Alt Rock “Surprisingly sharp (but sedated) pop chops carefully preserved in amber.” — PITCHFORK “Psych-tinged knockout … a beautiful collage of antique effects, soulful rhythms, and guitars that sigh, squelch, and swirl.” — MAGNET

The Backward Path marks a departure for Dan Melchior in a number of ways. It is his first album to feature other musicians since his time with the Broke Revue, and it also marks a change in his songwriting methods, with more heartfelt sentiments rather than the usual flood of snide non-sequiturs. The vocal pieces are broken up with instrumentals that are nearest in tone to the “songs” on Dan’s acclaimed LP on Kye, Excerpts and Half Speeds, giving some room for the vocal pieces to sink in. The final result has more in common with Sister Lovers than Guitar Wolf, and we hope you will find this decidedly adventurous, emotionally engaging music as satisfying as Dan found it to make. “Dan Melchior only makes worthwhile records … he is our most consistent singer-songwriter among those who’ve been prolific at every stage of their careers, and should at least be as widely known and accepted as guys like Robert Pollard and Nick Saloman.” — DUSTED

This September, New York band Zs celebrates their ten-year anniversary with the release of SCORE, the complete sextet works from 2002–2007. Zs have been described with a dizzying array of adjectives, and performed alongside an equally dizzying complement of colleagues and collaborators ranging from Throbbing Gristle’s Genesis P. Orridge to Roscoe Mitchell and Christian Wolf. Belonging nowhere and everywhere, Zs have absorbed the editorial space of Howard Stern and Alex Ross alike, filling the pages of publications like The Wire and Signal To Noise as often as those of the New York Times and The New Yorker.

This project interprets selections from the vast Duke Ellington songbook and presents new original compositions inspired by the essence of Ellington. The worldwide debut took place in Milan this past February; that performance and recording thereof turned out so tremendously that William and AUM decided it needed to be released as soon as possible. That concert, with more than two hours of transformative exuberance and tenderness, is presented here in its entirety. Highlights include “In a Sentimental Mood,” presented in duet by Dave Burrell & Darius Jones, updating the Ellington & Coltrane classic recording. “Caravan” is introduced with an extended alto solo by Rob Brown; when the full orchestra hits it’s immediately evident that this tune has not been performed better than this, ever. And, of course, each of Parker’s original compositions and performances thereof (there are four of them here).

For more than two decades, De/Vision has been captivating fans of electronic pop music. Where many acts would rest on their laurels, De/Vision has returned with Rockets & Swords, the most beautiful album of their storied career. Steffen and Thomas once again went into the studio with the producer team Schumann and Bach, who worked with the duo on the more recent albums NOOB and Popgefahr. From the echoed notes of “Beauty of Decay” to the haunting “Want To Believe,” Rockets & Swords is an exquisite, shimmering beacon of electronic resplendence.

Velvet Acid Christ is the long-running, innovative brainchild of Bryan Erickson. The acoustic guitars found on previous album The Art of Breaking Apart may not be present on Maldire, but at the beginning of the new album we find VAC exploring slower, spookier, brooding themes. “HyperCurse,” a dark psytrance song, opens the way to the second half of Maldire, featuring VAC at its most aggressive. Maldire exemplifies what VAC is all about, as it finds Erickson both returning to his evil electronic dance roots and pushing his creative boundaries ever further.

Those who followed the meteoric rise of Detroit Diesel, or read the credits of their seminal debut album Terre Humaine, might recall the name of a former member of Clutch who parted company with the band shortly before the release of the album. If you are one of those who wondered, “Whatever happened to that guy?” wonder no longer—wonder only at the sheer adrenaline rush unleashed on his new trio Nitro Noise’s first album, Total Nihilism. Hailing from Montreal, where they recently made their live debut at Kinetik 5, Nitro Noise takes the sound palette of Terre Humaine, adds equal parts Nachtmahr and Combichrist, and throws some guitars into the mix for good measure. With art by Vlad McNeally of KallistiDesign and mastering by Jan L of NOISUF-X/X-FUSION, it would be fair to describe this release as an assured, polished debut that recalls the musical elements that made Terre Humaine great while taking them in a different, rock/industrial direction. Rounded out with exclusive remixes from the mighty Combichrist, the Imperial Austrian style of Nachtmahr, and the German hardstyle of SAM, this is one of the essential new faces in the industrial scene!

Tampa’s Red Room Cinema has been constantly evolving since 2004, when founding members Anthony Maltese and Brian Burleson began to weave shifting time signatures, dynamic atmospherics, and haunting melodies into artfully crafted, sprawling instrumental soundscapes. Following their 2008 EP The Black Friday Session, Red Room Cinema tries their hand at wordless storytelling with the four-part epic “APSIS.” Drawing inspiration from the short stories of Italo Calvino, they sonically navigate the themes of loss, hope, and human connection as the moon begins to collapse and rain down onto the earth. “RRC is both the calm before the storm and the wrecking force of a cyclone.” — REAX

The pieces comprising The Expanding Universe combine slowly evolving textures with the emotional richness of intricate counterpoint, harmony, and complex rhythms, all built from electronic sounds. These works, often grouped with those of Terry Riley, Phil Glass, or Steve Reich, differ in their much shorter, clearer forms. Composed and realized between 1974 and 1977 on the GROOVE system developed by Max Mathews and F.R. Moore at Bell Laboratories, the pieces on this album were far ahead of their time both in musical content and in how they were made. Each work broke new ground, pioneering completely new methods of live interaction with computer-based logic—ways of creating music that are now reaching the heights of their popularity with Ableton Live, Max/MSP, and other interactive music software entering mainstream music production.

The venerated band was a mainstay at Rivers’ Studio RivBea—the most famous venue during the “loft jazz” movement of the 1970s—and was well-known for its marathon fully-improvised concerts. Their powerful rapport gives no hint of the fact that they had not played together in 25 years when this concert took place in 2007.

Klippa och rulla. If you were to translate “rock and roll” into Swedish, that’s what you’d get. Translate it back and things get a little dicey; “mow and wheel”—not quite a literal translation. Strangely, it’s not the worst way to describe Sweden’s Skånska Mord. Fuzzed-out psychedelia, the likes of which hasn’t been heard since the heyday of real rock in the ’70s, oozes from the amps and tears across the landscape like a lawnmower on acid. The world starts to spin. Everything goes black. And then the songs kick in…

Ludovico Technique creates harsh industrial music highlighting the dark aspects of the human experience as well as the depths to which a man’s mind can deteriorate. Some Things Are Beyond Therapy finds principle songwriter Ben V. blending musical influences that range from early industrial to classical music, and everything in between. Seething vocals blend with driving beats and orchestral blasts. While many harsh industrial acts fall into the 4/4 straight-up dance beat trap, Ludovico Technique constantly shifts styles and sounds. The driving aggression of “Dead Inside,” the roiling malice of “Deeper Into You,” the darkly seductive “Potential,” and the dance groove of “Beyond Therapy” all show different facets of this impressive new addition to the Metropolis roster. X Marks the Pedwalk burst onto the electro-industrial scene in the beginning of the 1990s. Their debut full-length recording, 1991’s Freaks, immediately established the act as a major force in the newly-emerging industrial dance genre. Over the next few releases, their sound evolved; slowly, the harshness faded away and the act experimented with blending in more mainstream techno elements, culminating in 1996’s Meshwork, which was met with cries of approval throughout the hard electro scene. The Sun, The Cold and My Underwater Fear is a compelling continuation of that voyage of self-discovery, and this time XMTP takes us on a journey through what haunts us. From vocalist Estefania’s soft pleading on the opening “You Are Gone” and the trance-like “Fallen Angel” to the darker, more rhythmic “Tormented Skin” and “No!,” we find XMTP in top form. Track Listing: You Are Gone • Don’t Lie To Me • The Day I Start To Die • The Side Of The Wrong • Nightfall • The Sun, The Cold, My Underwater Fear • Fallen Angel • Electric Summer • Tormented Skin • No! • Run!
