Haraya 2016
An Annual Exposition of the UP College of Architecture Year: 2016 | Collaborator: Alanis Avenilla As Creatives Co-Head of Haraya 2016 – the annual exposition of the UP College of Architecture (UPCA), Alanis Avenilla and I decided to take a direction that is quite different but is of the same “feel” of creative direction of Haraya celebrations of past years. The 2D and 3D flat design which was used in recent Haraya iterations were used as an inspiration for the design. We also wanted to showcase something that has never been done before. This led us to the use of sketch models as the main focal point of the design. The sketch model showcases three materials; balsa wood, sintra board and acrylic which stand for a few meaning: three eagles of the UPCA icon: faculty, staff and students; three distinct building materials: wood, concrete and glass; and three periods of architecture: past, present and future.

All the campaign materials highlighted a unique sketch model painstakingly done by our team. Aside from this, each event was assigned colors derived from the four main colors of the Haraya logo – yellow, green, cyan and magenta. The colors were toned down and reflect the material design-style colors popularized by Google. Added with very simple typography, the resulting series of campaign materials was a coherent and eye-catching.

The models were made to become focal point and the over-all creative direction of Haraya 2016. The use of simple volumes and entourage gave the models interest without being too distracting. While I conceptualized and led the creation of the models, Alanis took and processed the photos and assigned background colors.
Online publicity was also maximized. At the planning stage of the project, Alanis and I highly prioritized the online campaign for the event. This means attracting activities in the Haraya original through original and visually-interesting posts. Video teasers and creative use of photo album previews were used. In the end, the page gained an additional 1000+ likes and the page activity soared. An example of a facebook page post taking advantage of the four-window album preview.

LigaYakal 2016
Yakal Residence Hall Sports Festival 2016 In line with Yakal Residence Hall’s semestral theme of “Barangay Yakal,” Yakal House Council decided to push for a Liga-themed Sportfest, hence the name “LigaYakal.” As the creative director for the event, I crafted the logo, conceptualized the over-all creative direction ad produced all the necessary campaign materials. The logo design was fun, youthful and active and intentionally designed not to follow typical sports-themed publicity materials. This was also the case for the over-all creative direction. The design was colorful, vibrant and fluid, bearing minimal semblance to typical sports related events. Furthermore, the design was influenced by the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics.

Part of the campaign was to design two sets of icons. First was the team emblems and second was the sports iconography. Since we didn’t want to give animal mascots for each team (typical of any sports event), the concept for the emblems was simple: give an emblem for each “Purok” using only each of their assigned numbers – Purok Uno is Team One, Purok Dos is Team Two and so on. This led me to the design of fluid “stick figures” which body movements form the teams’ numbers. The design for the event icons likewise follow this concept.

Dormers Cup 2017
The Alliance of Concerned Dormitories Sportsfest 2017 It’s typical for inter-dormitory wide events inside the University to have unflattering publicity campaigns. I wanted to change that with this project. As the Vice Chairperson for External Affairs of the Alliance of Concerned Dormitories (ACD), I took the helm of Publicity Head for the annual Dormers Cup, a sportsfest of all university-managed residence halls. I wanted the direction for this campaign to have the same approach as LigaYakal – a design that’s atypical of sporting events.
This project marked the first time I tried digital illustration using a Wacom Intuos tablet, and for me, the result was satisfying. While monochromatic and flat, the illustrations and typography have the elements of movement and texture, making it eye-catching, both in print (official tarpaulin design, topmost) and online.

Inspired by the recent branding and visual identity design of Dan Matutina for the UP Fighting Maroons, I conceptualized a design that is simple yet dynamic and striking. The highlights for the design were the texturized illustration and the typography.

Better Cities, Better Lives 2030 YFPH, Inc.s’ Talk on Sustainable Cities
As the SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities Ambassador of the 2030 Youth Force in the Philippines Inc (2030 YFPH), I spearheaded the event “Better Cities, Better Lives: A Talk on Sustainable Cities.” With the help of the 2030 YFPH working team this involved planning, reaching prospect speakers, and organizing the event proper. Aside from these, I also designed and produced all the event publicity materials for the event. The direction for the design is to focus on and emphasize the message. This led to a very simple design with minimal graphic elements, emphasizing the title. An interesting gradient palette was used alluding to a “clean, green and sustainable city.” Combined with an overlay of road network map of Quezon City, the finished product was given texture and graphical uniqueness.

The series of event campaign kicked off with a statement post on the celebration of the World Cities Day 2017. The design for this Facebook page post acted as some sort of an event teaser, directing the look of campaign materials that followed. Again, the same direction for the design was followed – emphasizing on the message with very minimal design elements.

I believe that the key to a good event campaign is cohesion. This was why the design direction was also implemented in all event-related materials. These included name tags for the volunteers, certificates for the speakers, event primer and so on. This was also the same for the online campaign materials – from daily event updates and the post-event publicity.

Kahandaan ay Kaligtasan: Maging Disaster-Ready! A Manual on Disaster Preparedness
Last year, I was commissioned to remaster a disaster-preparedness manual entitles “Disaster Proof Tayo for its third edition. The client, DanRio Enterprise asked me to improve on the existing layout and to add timely contents. These involved the redesign of the cover, adjustment of each page layouts, creating necessary illustrations, researching pertinent information and writing pages of additional contents. As requested by the client, most of the illustrations from the past edition were retained.
Portfolio | Allen John Guanzon
Part of the assignment was to create additional content. This required both additional writeups and illustrations. For the content, I tried to include all pertinent information without sacrificing the layout. For the illustrations, on the other hand, the style used in the previous editions were implemented to retain the over-all design of the book.

To give new life to the book for its remastered edition, all pages were relay-outed to improve legibility and design. This involved using new open-source typeface for the headings and texts and the reordering of the page contents. Also, the redesign called for the improvement of the design of the book’s main character.

Custom Cover Designs
As part of my continuing involvement with the Disaster-Ready book series, I was commissioned by the clients to make custom cover designs for prospect LGU (local government unit) clients. This involved creating cartoon illustrations of key political figure of the locality, and adding design elements that reflect the LGUs own visual identity.

Uncovering Addiction:
What You Need to Know About Drugs A Book on Drug Addiction for Young Readers
I was tapped by veteran psychologist Cristina Rosello to design and illustrate for the book she had written for DanRio Enterprise. The book, entitled “Uncovering Addiction: What You Should Know About Drugs, is book about Drug Addiction geared towards young readership especially in elementary and high school. Instead of instilling further fear and taboo on the issue of drug addiction, Ms. Rosello aimed to encourage the readers to be equipped with the basic knowledge on drugs and their effects to the individual, families, communities and the nation.
Portfolio | Allen John Guanzon
This approach for the book guided the over-all design I implemented in the book. I designed visually-appealing and vibrant illustrations for the pages and the cover to attract readers. In lay-outing the pages, I needed to make a compromise between the lengthy text and the illustrations. Therefore, the graphical illustrations included were made to assist the readers in understanding the text. A bright palette and highly legible open-source typeface were used as well.

Aside from designing the book, I was tasked by the publisher to create additional material related to the book such as the layout design for a teacher’s guide and a presentation material for interested clients. Other materials will be produced following this design direction such as a shortened Filipino version and educational posters.

ABDUL: KEBAB & CURRY Project Year: 2018
Abdul: Kebab & Curry, “Abdul” for short, is a food concept that serves as a playground for Middle Eastern and Indian flavors, and aims to be a household name for Persian-Indian fast casual dining. Abdul shall offer Middle Eastern and Indian classic dishes that are traditionally cooked and “tweaked” to have a distinct taste with modern sensibility. Abdul shall start off as a “kanto” style food stall and then eventually grow to a stand-alone operation.
LOGO DESIGN The logo design for the new Abdul brand is a play on the old logo of Abdul The Cool. By going with an actual “Abdul” character as an icon, the brand stays true to its hip and fun roots while taking into consideration clarity and familiarity. The new Abdul logo is funky yet sleek packaged in only clean lines and simple curves. The minimal design and subtle details establish an over-all look that is not too intimidating, but not too shabby - perfect for the modern “kanto”-style vibe.

I also designed a series of food icons highlighting the special items on Abdul’s menu. I veered away from the geometric line icons typical of contemporary branding style; instead I drew the items to give it a natural, comical and “kantostyle” look. These icons guided the design of the stall mural and will be used as patterns for future packaging materials.

I was also tasked to lead the design for the brand’s facebook page. The online materials made use of the special hand-written type and the menu item icons. The finished materials were clean and simple yet youthful and funky, much like the over-all branding.
Business Card Design
During the conceptualization of the brand identity, the client and I agreed on incorporating a streetstyle mural to the stall design. This led to our collaboration with street artist Auggie Fontanilla who designed and created a mural that very much became the focal point of the stall. I later digitized his design and incorporated it to the design of the menu cards.

To complete the brand package, I designed the staff uniform for Abdul as well. This three-piece set included a cap, a ringer shirt and an apron. The color scheme was a simple monochromatic red over white which fitted perfectly to the stall’s design. Incorporated in the uniform was the brand elements such as the logo, wordmark and food icons. The set was coherent to the over-all direction of simplicity with a case of youthful funkiness.

LAS PIÑAS-PARAÑAQUE CRITICAL HABITAT AND ECOTOURISM AREA
Project Year: 2017
The concept for logo design proposal for the Las PiñasParañaque Critical Habitat and Ecotourism Area is “Experiencing LPPCHEA.” Using the studies done on the Ramsar site, the mission of LPPCHEA and the architecture of the proposed Wetland Center Complex, the logo was designed to be classic yet fresh and vibrant. It holds the professional semblance with the DENR’s logo while having a youthful look typical of contemporary logo designs. I aimed for the logo to establish familiarity of LPPCHEA and what it offers, and to highlight the endemic Philippine Duck that found its home in the area.
LOGO ELEMENTS Several graphic elements were included. Several points of interest in LPPCHEA such as the mangroves and the marsh were included in the logo. The architecture of the Wetland Center Wave was symbolized with a V-shaped grass. An image of a hand was incorporated to signify “participation” and “experience.” Interlinking all these elements create a silhouette of the Philippine Duck.

Project Year: 2018
I was commissioned to design a simple brand study for Drip Coffee Shop, a soon-to-open coffee shop in Makati. When I entered the scene, the client already has some brand collaterals done – shop signage, shop design, etc. This set great limitations for the design. Through a close relation with the client, I was able to make a compromise between what was already given with what I think would be great for the brand. The resulting design was a simple take on “artisan” style branding, yet youthful and fun.
BRANDING & VISUAL IDENTITY
DRIP COFFEE SHOP
The brief called for the design of a logo, menu boards, packaging and promo cards. With this, I designed an icon set which featured all the menu items of the shop and directed the over-all look of the brand. A two-colored palette was used composed of dark gray and grayish blue. A simple combination of serif and san serif typefaces were used to complement the contemporary simplicity of the brand.

LIBROWSE: THE ILIB SYSTEM APP
Project Year: 2018
LiBrowse
The design for the app was simple and streamlines to help usability and legibility. The visual identity for the app was derived from the existing visuals of the UP Main Library to improve user familiarity. The landing page of the app showed the app’s 4 basic functions: as an OPAC search engine, as an e-library account, as an informational resource and as a helpdesk for any library needs. A logo for the app was also created, the design of which was derived from UP Main Lib’s logo as well.
Librowse is a “conceptual” supplement app to the current iLib system, the app collates every essential data about the UP Diliman Library System. Developed as a free mobile extension of the iLib system. The app enables users to not only search for materials through the integrated OPAC system but the users can also search for available library services as well as information on specific libraries within the UP Diliman campus. Through the integrated system, the users are able to easily get information regarding the UP Diliman library networks in a one-stop app without having to search for separate websites for information on the existing library services.
Portfolio | Allen John Guanzon
Aside from the app design, I was tasked to design a publicity poster to advertise the launch of the app. This conceptual poster would be posted in UP bulletin boards, websites and social media sites.

Revitalizing the City-Freeport Connection Project Year: 2018 This Comprehensive Design Project explores the urban cultural landscape of Olongapo City and Subic Bay Freeport Zone, a former American Naval Base turned freeport, as a product of their unique and shared historical context, starting from the Spanish Navy Era up to the present. Through the analysis of the sites’ people, places, and traditions, issues of identity, movement and development arose – issues which revolve around the remnants of the past, needs of the present and direction towards the future.
43
Isometric Aerial from Freeport CBD
PROJECT AGENDA The analysis of the context and the identification of its issues led to establishing the proposal’s 3-point agenda, namely Past, Present, and Future. The three agenda aims to generalize several project objectives under the premise of the site’s shared history and hopefully, shared growth in the future. Past involves emphasizing contextual elements through design and highlighting the remnants of the sites’ colorful history. Present deals into addressing several issues of the present context like economy but more importantly movement. Future delves further into establishing a shared city-freeport urban district scheme, under a theme of heritage-urban lifestyle, that is deemed beneficial to the growth of both sites as autonomous bodies.
Conceptual Revitalization Plan
DESIGN PROBLEM How can the design forward the creation of an integrated city-freeport development in the future which addresses some of the pressing needs of the present population, while highlighting the storied relationship of Olongapo City and Subic Bay Freeport Zone in the past?
As an intervention in the macro level, a conceptual revitalization plan is proposed. The main feature of the plan is to connect the two main axis of the Olongapo CBD Triangle - Magsaysay Avenue and Rizal Avenue; to the SBFZ CBD’s Aguinaldo Street, Dewey Avenue and Manila Avenue to create the CityFreeport Triangle Link, a new urban core shared by the city and freeport.

Isometric Aerial from Olongapo CBD The micro-intervention is a reimagining of the Magsaysay Bridge as an urban park and the Freeport Main Gate lot as a mixed-use urban facility which would act as a both a transition and a linkage between the city and the freeport. In creating the architecture, aspects of context, scale, movement, and transition were considered. The product was a structure that fosters movement to and from the site, and a building that has a character derived from the unique built enviornment inside the freeport and along Magsaysay Drive.
