Our vision

We are Rugby League On 19 April 1952, Workington Town captain Gus Risman lifted the Rugby League Challenge Trophy at Wembley in front of 72,000 fans. This was a remarkable achievement for a team formed just 12 years earlier. Since then there have been other memorable occasions that are embedded in the consciousness of West Cumbrians and their passion for Rugby League remains. But we are looking to the future. We’re tapping into the community’s love and enthusiasm for Rugby League. And we want to engage and inspire the next generation with lasting memories and superb facilities. This is at the heart of our Rugby League World Cup England 2021 bid.

A powerful consortia

Wide-ranging support Our bid will be a consortium effort that brings together a wide range of partners. The consortium, led by Allerdale Borough Council and Workington Town, will be finalised over the coming months as discussions progress with international businesses, institutions and other relevant bodies to secure a long lasting legacy for Cumbria. The bid will demonstrate wide ranging support and confirm that the financial resources required of a host are in place.

It’s in our DNA

At the heart of community Rugby League is at the heart of community life in Allerdale. It’s a generational thing: from grandparents, to parents, to kids, the love of the sport is passed down the ages. The memories lasting forever. With professional clubs, Workington Town in Allerdale and Whitehaven in neighbouring Copeland, and scores of local clubs, the sport is in good health with great scope to grow its reach and participation levels. That’s why we’re bidding.

Better facilities for all

Fit for a world cup We want fans to have the very best pre- and post-match experience at the 2021 Rugby League World Cup. And we want a lasting and sustainable legacy for all to enjoy. That’s why new and improved community facilities are at the heart of our plans. Our new leisure centre in Workington has set the bar high for quality sporting facilities. It’s been responsible for more people getting into sport, especially hard to reach groups. We want to build on this. Our bid includes the ambition to build new facilities that will be an attraction themselves and will drive ticket sales for the competition. And leave a lasting legacy for the sport and the area.

Scotland during the Four Nations Tournament in 2016. And this was after the Rugby League World Cup had visited Workington in 2013. Combining this with the Tour of Britain cycling race, where thousands watched the riders suffer 20% gradients in the rain, the award-winning Lakesman Triathlon attracting 400 competitors to the area, and world rally champions M-Sport based in Dovenby – you can see why we really are the home of sporting excellence.

On and off the pitch

Stunning performances During the 2013 Rugby League World Cup our cultural programme brought Workington alive. To mark the Italy match, we saw the award-winning OperaUpClose company bring their production of Puccini’s La Bohème from London to a sell-out audience at the town’s Carnegie Theatre – proving that new audiences could be attracted to Rugby League and cultural events. The programme also included the creation of a new community choir that entertained spectators at the World Cup. And the march to the match, a visually stunning public performance by Compagnie des Quidam of Herbert’s Dream set against a backdrop of burning torches carried by fans, was an unforgettable experience.

We will be even more ambitious for 2021.

An important legacy

Inspiring local residents As in 2013, hosting the 2021 Rugby League World Cup will inspire our local residents to take up sport – boosting our plans to improve their health and wellbeing. We work to help people live healthy and active lives and reduce health inequalities. We will encourage participation in the run up to the competition with a number of community initiatives, including a tag or touch festival with the finalists playing a curtain raiser before a World Cup game. Working with Rugby League partners and others, we will target all sections of the community, including women and girls and people with disabilities to take part in the sport.
