From the Editor Summer is typically a time of vacations, family gatherings, and generally, just enjoying the great outdoors. The COVID pandemic has certainly changed these activities for all of us. Given this new state of affairs, we thought it would be especially interesting for this Focus to take a look at unique ways to better cope with stress, with a video on how to utilize vagus nerve stimulation. On the topic of stress, we interviewed Dr. Jillian Finker, who discusses how well her patients have responded to a unique ingredient found in the Blue Ling fish. Given all the stress that people are under these days, we also look at how this stress adversely affects the thyroid gland, and how nutritional precursors can improve thyroid function. Both readers and practitioners over the years have asked us many questions about the use of glandular therapies, so we were fortunate enough to interview Dr. Linda Isaacs, a world expert in the use of glandular therapies, who discusses their use for improving general health and well-being, as well as autoimmunity and immune dysfunction. Lastly, we wanted to discuss some common and not so common uses of botanicals to improve libido for both men and women. The advantage of many of these botanicals is that they are also adaptogens, helping us to cope better in these utmost stressful times.

BIOHACKS FOR A CALMER, HAPPIER, MORE FOCUSED YOU Ways to Make Your Vagus Nerve Your New Best Friend
In this installment of our Nutrition in Focus video series, Dr. Erica Zelfand introduces the vagus nerve – a nerve that plays an important role in balancing the “fight-or-flight and rest-and-digest” branches of the autonomic nervous system. She then introduces the concepts of vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) and polyvagal theory in a fun and easy-to-follow way and offers guidelines on how to use body-based activities like diaphragmatic breathing, laughter, alcohol cessation, and forest bathing to cultivate a calmer, happier, more focused version of yourself.
