Herbal Approaches to Stress Adaptogens are a class of herbs known as stress-response modifiers, or metabolic regulators which increase the ability of an organism to adapt to environmental stressors without damage.58 While the mechanisms of action may differ for different adaptogenic herbs, a number of studies suggest that adaptogens have a global effect on cortisol and other mediators of the stress response.59 Some examples of popular adaptogens include:

Ashwagandha

Rhodiola

A well-known adaptogen that helps to tone the nervous system. It has been shown to reduce the rise in cortisol that we see in states of chronic stress.60

An energizing adaptogen that has been shown to reduce anxiety levels and improve energy levels in patients with fatigue syndromes. It has neuroprotective properties and has been shown to enhance cognition and memory.61

Holy basil An Ayurvedic herb with a long history of supporting a balanced mood in times of stress. It has been shown to support proper neurotransmitter and corticosteroid responses in stressful conditions.62
