After more than a month on the ground, our program officially demobilized on July 5th, having left an immensely positive impact on the Sand Springs community. A huge thank you to the entire team of DART members, staff, and volunteers. Thanks to your incredible devotion and care, we were able to spend an amazing 27 working days assisting families affected by flooding.
Volunteer Voices “All Hands and Hearts is an incredible organization that is easy to volunteer with and does life-changing work in the communities that they show up in. I went to their website and was put in contact with an All Hands representative within 24 hours to help tell me when and where to show up. The entire group of volunteers is a big family that instantly makes you a part of their family as soon as you get there. Organization and planning were phenomenal and we went to work clearing our first house within an hour of showing up at base. The work was demanding but never got overwhelming due to the upbeat and positive attitudes of everyone on the team. I would highly recommend All Hands and Hearts to anyone looking to do volunteer work.” -Samuel Merutka, first time volunteer

Disaster Profile In May 2019, a devastating storm system swept through the central United States that caused rivers to rise dramatically and prompted evacuations in Oklahoma and Arkansas. From May 22nd to May 31st, the western Tulsa suburb Sand Springs received some of the most significant residential flooding along the Arkansas River. As a result, the Meadow Valley and Town and Country communities in Sand Springs were inundated by flood waters. In these two neighborhoods alone, an estimated 200-250 properties were flooded with 1-5 feet of water.
Our Work By strategically positioning ourselves in Missouri, our Disaster Assessment Response Team was able to begin assessments and work within 48 hours of the water receding. With little relief in the communities, we immediately engaged our DART volunteers to support mucking and gutting work as we established a response program. Thanks to the crucial support of our partners, donors, local community and volunteers, we were on the ground running an impactful program in Oklahoma from May 30th through July 5th.
