MEXICO EARTHQUAKE UPDATE - OAXACA (March 2019)
CURRENT ACTIVITIES For the past two months, All Hands and Hearts has been in Oaxaca, Mexico, laying the groundwork to bring resilience to a community shaken by the Central Mexico earthquakes. Here’s what we have underway in Oaxaca: CELSO MUNOZ PRIMARY SCHOOL ● Block walls for the new classrooms have been built and concrete columns have been poured up to the bottom of the beam. ● Formwork from the column concrete pours has been removed and volunteers are preparing the rebar for the beam. ● Compaction is ongoing on all three plots, and preparation for the slabs has started. JARDIN DE NIÑOS 13 DE SEPTIEMBRE PRESCHOOL ● ●
Demolition and excavation are complete in preparation for starting construction on 11th March. Welding works on the playground roof and the main gate are in progress.

One volunteer, Keith (pictured above in centre), initiated a trash pick-up twice a week on the morning walk to site. Community members have said that they are inspired by this, as well as the positive attitude of our volunteers, the fact that females are working on site, and the healthy nutrition of program meals.
Other recent community engagement activities have included a game of football with the local masons, and fortnightly salsa classes for volunteers, led by one of the school teachers. The Principal of Celso Muñoz even attended the first class as the ‘music man’!

DISASTER PROFILE The Central Mexico earthquake struck on September 19, 2017. The 7.1 magnitude earthquake caused severe damage in the state of Morelos and the greater Mexico City area. OUR WORK In partnership with Happy Hearts Fund Mexico and with support from donors, partners, and volunteers from around the world, All Hands and Hearts – Smart Response has run an impactful program in Mexico since February 26, 2018. Initially working in the state of Morelos, we are now able to expand our efforts into Oaxaca, where we are working on Celso Munoz Primary School. Our work on the classrooms, computer room, office, and bathrooms, will give students schools a safe, secure place to go to school everyday.
OUR MISSION To effectively and efficiently address the immediate and long-term needs of communities impacted by natural disasters. By listening to local people, and deploying a unique model of engaging volunteers to enable direct impact, we rebuild safe, resilient schools, homes and other community infrastructure.
