THANK YOU! Natural disasters can destroy everything in a matter of moments. But it takes years for communities to rebuild and as time passes they are often forgotten. All Hands and Hearts - Smart Response not only comes in early to help, but stays for the long run to rebuild homes, schools, and lives. We want to thank everyone who has supported our work in the aftermath of natural disasters across the world. Here is what we have been able to accomplish in the past quarter with your help. Our volunteers are hard at work across our programs; they exemplify how ordinary people can come together to achieve extraordinary results. Thank you for your continued care and stay tuned for news and updates from All Hands and Hearts. We couldn’t have done it without you.
The All Hands and Hearts Team
DOMINICA HURRICANE RECOVERY Our work on the Paix Bouche Primary School in Dominica is well underway and scheduled to be completed by August 2018. Our primary focus is rebuilding a more sustainable roof and structure, remodeling the layout of the ground floor to add one more classroom, and repairing the toilet blocks, stage, canteen and playground areas. Our work has also expanded to include the rebuild of the Paix Bouche Pre-School, which we have already begun demolition on. Watch the video. The Dominica program has an immediate need for volunteers. SOUTH TEXAS FLASH FLOOD RESPONSE On June 20, 2018, intense tropical rains from the Gulf of Mexico hit the Texas coast, triggering severe flash flooding that overran local communities. With water levels reaching shoulder height, homes have been engulfed in water creating significant damage, while many roads are uncrossable making it challenging to reach the families who are affected. Our team set up a response program in Hidalgo County where we are helping communities to restore homes with the support of Team Depot. Our work will be focused on debris removal, mucking and gutting and mold sanitation. Learn how Home Depot has supported our response work in South Texas. The South Texas program has an immediate need for volunteers. Learn how to volunteer.
TEXAS HURRICANE RECOVERY In Texas, our partner, Good360, partnered with Rooms To Go to deliver furniture to survivors of Hurricane Harvey. With their help, we are transforming houses back into homes. Watch how Good360, Rooms To Go and All Hands and Hearts is making a change in Houston.
BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS HURRICANE RESPONSE In Tortola, we have completed debris removal for homes and are continuing our work in restoring education to hundreds of students in the community. Our projects are on schedule at the Wonder Years Day Care & Pre-School and the Rainbow Transitional Home and Autism Centre, and since our last update, we have begun work on the Ivan Dawson Primary School. PUERTO RICO HURRICANE RECOVERY In Puerto Rico, we are continuing to help the community with their greatest need: roof repairs. Our work has helped us developed what we refer to as “Resilient Roofing Standards,” which are a set of standards that we uphold to ensure our roof repair work is sustainable enough to withstand any hurricane with wind speeds up to 150MPH. Watch the video. We still need your help. Donate to our Puerto Rico programs.
U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS HURRICANE RECOVERY Both St. Thomas and St. John programs in the USVI have transitioned over to the Recovery phase, where we are still responding to homes but focused on rebuilding schools for students. Learn more about our work in St. Thomas and St. John.
MEXICO EARTHQUAKE RECOVERY With the help of our affiliate, Happy Hearts Fund Mexico, our work on the Narciso Mendoza Primary School is on target to be completed by August 2018. Meanwhile, at New Vincent Guerrero Primary School, we have expanded our work to reconstruct the entire school and are expected to complete this project by September 2018. NEW YORK TORNADO On May 15, 2018, five tornadoes landed in the New York State and Connecticut State border. With tornado-force winds maxing out at dangerous speeds of 110mph, homes were easily stripped of their bricks and roofs simply peeled away as the twister ripped through the local communities. Hundreds of thousands of local residents lost power and five lives were unfortunately lost from downed trees. In June, we launched a rapid response program to help some of the hardest hit areas – Orange and Putnam Counties in New York state. With help from our partners, The Home Depot and Stihl, we assembled a volunteer team to perform chainsaw work and debris removal. Our New York program has closed, but there are still other programs that need volunteers. Learn how to volunteer with one of our open programs.
