Gold Award Recipients McKenna Boegle Art and Baking with the Senior Residents at Sierra Manor I became a Girl Scout when I was seven years old. In Girl Scouts, I enjoyed donating my time to the Food Bank, and participating in book, clothing, and shoe drives. For my Silver award I researched senior living centers and found Sierra Manor Care. I worked with New2U Computers to provide two computers for the residents at Sierra Manor Care, and taught a resident how to use it. While working on my Silver Award Project, I noticed that there were very few residents walking around, so I did some research on senior isolation and found that illnesses and conditions such as chronic lung disease, arthritis, impaired mobility, and depression have been associated with isolation in senior living facilities. As soon as I realized how serious isolation was, I knew that’s what my Gold Award project needed to address. For my project, I lead baking and sketching classes and even coordinated speakers to talk with residents; including a nutritionist, a complete nutrition manager, mental health teacher, and a high school art teacher. I’m currently a Sophomore at Galena High School, am on track to graduate early with an Honors Diploma, and plan on studying Biology at the University of Oregon. I received the News 4 Class Act Award for the month of March in 2017 for my work on my Gold Award.

Madison Evans Camp for Pre-Schoolers I recognized an opportunity in my community where children could not obtain the benefits of a preschool education prior to entering kindergarten due to a lack of financial resources. To fill this gap, I chose to develop a one week educational “Thinking Camp” to help prepare these children for the rigors of elementary school at no cost to program participants. This volunteer-led camp focused on developing recognition and writing of letters and numbers, identification of colors and shapes, and most importantly, social skill development. Participating families observed great improvement in their children’s academic capabilities and social skills at the end of the program. Volunteers, which included high school and Early Childhood Education college students, commented on how the camp helped them to improve their skills in working with young children. I’ve been a Girl Scout for 12 years and I’m so proud of my Gold Award project. The most important skill I feel I developed during my project was confidence in talking to local agencies while promoting this valuable program. I’m pleased that the program will continue this summer. I’m looking forward to my senior year at George Whittell High School and aspire to go into the medical profession.

Grace Griego Community Writes For my Gold Award project, I addressed the lack of creative writing in my community by inviting an author to Bishop to host a creative writing workshop for our local youth. I chose Terri Farley, author of the Phantom Stallion series and her photographer, Melissa Farlow, to host the workshop. They went to Bishop Union High School, Palisades High School, and Round Valley School. Roughly 80 students ended up participating. The project will be carried on by the Creative Writing Club at Bishop Union High School and the students now have a website (broncowriters. com) to utilize what they learned during the workshop. I’m currently a Junior at Bishop Union High School and plan to apply for colleges on the east coast soon in hopes of majoring in theater with a minor in creative writing.

Kelsey Kjer STEM GEMS Slumber Party My Girl Scout Gold Award project aimed at addressing the unequal representation of women in STEM fields through a slumber party for all the girls in my school. It was a huge success and we had a great time. The girls learned a lot about STEM, coding, and women in these fields. After learning about women in STEM, they created presentations on these women and also completed a project in “Scratch,” a website that allows young people to program interactive stories, games, and animations. Locally, the project will become an annual event, hosted by my mentor and computer science teacher, Susan Van Doren, and the senior girls of the AP STEM class. On a global level, I created a website that includes a handbook explaining how others can hold their own event and get involved in addressing the issue and make a difference. It felt really good to take charge and see how this project impacted the girls at my school. I’m currently a freshman in the Honors Program at the University of Nevada, Reno. I’m majoring in biology, and minoring in chemistry and psychology. I plan on attending graduate school in order to obtain my Doctor of Physical Therapy degree. As a physical therapist, I plan on specializing in pediatrics. I’ve been a Girl Scout since kindergarten, and I am now a lifetime member.

Holly Strasser The True Importance of Honey Bees My Gold Award, “The True Importance of Honey Bees,” solidified my belief in the value of honeybees as they relate to agriculture and our everyday lives. Through this project, I can now not only provide plant and animal production knowledge to the people I’m assisting, but also share with them the role honeybees play in making their life-dependent venture successful. I’m currently a Senior at Carson High School this year and will be attending Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in the fall, majoring in Animal Science with an emphasis in genetic engineering and molecular biology. In 10 years, I plan to be working for the U.S. Department of Agriculture as an overseas liaison for agriculturally deficient countries, helping them regain their feet.
