THANK YOU! The Girl Scout Promise
On my honor, I will try: To serve God and my country, To help people at all times, And live by the Girl Scout law.
The Girl Scout Law
I will do my best to be honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, couageous and strong, and responsible for what I say and do, and to respect myself and others, respect authority, use resources wisely, make the world a better place, and be a sister to every Girl Scout. 2
Thank you for believing in the power of girls! Because of you, girls in northern Nevada and northeastern California are building courage, confidence and character and making our community and the world a better place. We had a fun-filled, action-packed 2014-2015 with many exciting changes! First, in an effort to ensure that all girls, volunteers and friends of Girl Scouts can easily participate in our program, we made significant investments in new technology. Our new customer-friendly online system makes it a snap to register for Girl Scouts. In addition, we now have an upgraded website and a new staffing structure that will enable us to provide exceptional customer service. Second, our generous donors and community partnerships enabled us to bring new programming to girls, including: the RGJ Water Savers Patch program that taught girls about water conservation and got them outdoors to learn about our precious local water resources; the AT&T Imagine Your STEM Future program that gave at-risk girls the opportunity to learn about STEM fields and the many lucrative careers available for their futures; and thanks to a very generous donor, we were able to build an amazing low ropes challenge course at Camp Wasiu II that promotes self-confidence and teambuilding. Lastly, after a national search to replace our outgoing CEO, Julia Ratti, the Board of Directors appointed me as your new CEO as of June 1, 2015. I have been at our Girl Scout council since October, 2007 and I am so honored to have been selected to support our many wonderful Girl Scout traditions and volunteers, new innovative ways of working, and excellent customer service for those we serve. It’s full-steam ahead here at Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada! We are so excited to bring more diverse and exciting programming to girls in the future as we expand upon and build new relationships in our community. Thank you again for your support! FOCUS AREAS
Science, Technology, Engineering & Math When today’s girls graduate from
Ever wonder how some troops spend their hard-earned cookie money? Troop 1101 of Fernley donated enough money to purchase 32 wreaths for Wreaths Across America. The troop allocated $220 of their cookie money, and donated an additional $100! They also helped to lay the wreaths at the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

college, the U.S. will need three million more scientists and engineers. Girl Scouts is fueling this pipeline with programs that introduce girls to the wide range of possible careers in the science and technology fields and helping them discover the many ways they can make a difference by building these skills. From camp programs to badge work and fun activities, girls learn handson skills that will translate into leadership and success in STEM fields.
Healthy Living Girl Scouting provides a safe
environment where girls are able to develop their own path toward a healthy lifestyle – a key to leadership success. For girls, being healthy is not just eating right and exercising; it is also about feeling good about one’s self, being supported by family, and engaging in safe friendships. Girl Scout curriculum consists of activities and camps that build self-esteem, physical fitness, nutrition, and safety.
Environmental Leadership & Responsibility Girl Scout programs combine environmental education with community action, and give each girl a fun and meaningful way to protect and conserve the resources we all enjoy. Through outdoor experiences, like summer camp and community action projects, girls work toward earning awards on care, conservation, and environmental responsibility.
Financial Literacy Financial Literacy helps girls set fiscal goals and gain the confidence they need to ultimately take control of their own future. By developing money management skills early in life, girls learn how to become responsible consumers, create a budget, build and manage credit, and save and invest for whatever’s next. Girl Scouts offer all girls the opportunity to build their business savvy and financial literacy through age-specific curriculum and the Girl Scout Cookie Program, the largest girl-led business in the world.
Girl Scouts partnered with the RGJ to create the Water Savers Club patch program. Girls tracked their water usage at home, learned about the Truckee River eco-system and contributed to the one million gallons of water saved in our region.
Community Service Girl Scouts are proud to be do-
gooders. It’s not only fun to give back with friends, it’s making a huge difference in our neighborhoods, communities, and the world. Troop 67 gave back to their community by donating hundreds of books from a book drive to the Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows library and Troop 19 toured the SPCA of Northern Nevada, donated supplies, and learned how to care for pets to earn their Daisy Journey.

Low Income Families & Neighborhoods Program With a $61,151 grant from AT&T, we engaged 100 high school girls who were at risk of dropping out of high school with STEM workshops and programming. This program was supported by a number of female STEM mentors in our community, ranging from pilots to physicists. The program ended with a STEM career exploration events at the University of Nevada, Reno.
In 2015, The GSSN Low Income Families and Neighborhoods Program served 763 girls across the Reno/Sparks area with fun, highimpact Girl Scout programming. Thanks to the support of generous donors, our girls spent the year earning badges, exploring Camp Wasiu II, participating in Girl Scout traditions, and going on adventures! This program works closely with community partners like WCSD’s 21st Century Schools TEAM UP program, Boys & Girls Club of the Truckee Meadows, Reno Housing Authority, Reno Family Shelter, and the Food Bank of Northern Nevada to ensure that all girls have the opportunity to be a Girl Scout – regardless of their background or socioeconomic status.
Camp Wasiu II & Day Camp Summer

2015 was full of great outdoor fun. 522 girls attended overnight camp at Wasiu II and 55 girls attended day camp. Thanks to a very generous donor, there are now 15 brand new stand-up paddle boards for our camp program and a low-ropes challenge course where girls build leadership, communication, and teamwork skills as they complete obstacles together. Coming next! More elements will be added to the challenge course, and Camp Wasiu II will have moving targets at the archery range, bringing a whole new level of excitement and challenge.
Travel Travel is an integral part of every Girl Scout's
journey. Travel introduces girls to new things, different cultures, encourages self expression and adaptability. From local field and camping trips to travels throughout the USA and abroad, Girl Scouting encourages exploration, adventure and fun. Girls can raise funds for trips with their troops or set individual goals to travel abroad with fellow Girl Scouts from around the world.
Volunteers Whether they’re exposing girls to the great
outdoors or supporting fellow volunteers through the Girl Scout Cookie Program, our volunteers are sharing their time and talents to build girls of courage, confidence, and character. In 2014-2015, GSSN had 1,964 adult members, 719 of whom served as leaders and co-leaders of troops.
Every day, Girl Scouts in your community are sharing with others the benefits of their Girl Scout experience. They discover, connect, and take action through innovative projects and programs, all while enjoying new friendships, fun troop activities, and sisterhood.
Cookie Share Because of rock star Girl Scouts
across the GSSN council, 16,800 packages of cookies were donated to nine organizations throughout the Reno/Sparks area, including homeless shelters, and the Think Kindness Program who, in turn, used them to create acts of kindness all around the world. In addition, many deserving militarty women and men were sent Girl Scout Cookies overseas as part of this program.

GOLDEN LEADERSHIP A Girl Scout believes she can lead because she has done it.
The Gold Award is the highest and most prestigious award that Girl Scouts earn, it stands for excellence and leadership for girls everywhere. The Gold Award project challenges girls to identify an unmet need or core issue in the community, research and investigate it, recruit volunteers, build a team to create a plan to address the issue/need and to put in place ways to make the project measureable and sustainable.
Congratulations to our 2015 Girl Scout Gold Awardees!

You know it when you meet a Girl Scout. A Girl Scout shines, reflecting the confidence her troop has ignited within her. A Girl Scout sees herself in the stars. A Girl Scout raises her hand to lead the experiment. At Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada, we proudly encourage girls to do anything they set their sights on. And we can’t wait to see how today’s girls will change our world tomorrow.
