Allie: It seems that life exists at a series of moments, as does wine. So, let's talk about you and wine in terms of moments. At what moment in your life did you realize you wanted to make wine?
Bill: My head was in a large redwood wine tank at Italian Swiss Colony in California. I had stuck it in there in youthful exuberance to take in the aromas. I was 8.
Allie: What is one of your most memorable moments with a bottle of wine?
Bill: My late wife, Judith and I had just taken possession on our little vineyard. It was our first overnight sleeping on the floor here. By candle light we toasted with a bottle of Champagne and when the bottle was empty I tossed in into the vineyard where it remains.
Allie: At what moment of the day are you ready to open a bottle of wine and enjoy a glass?
Bill: As I gather dinner ingredients together, the bottle of wine comes to the counter top with them. I open, pour a glass and begin prep.
Allie: What is one of your favorite moments in the vineyard? In the tasting room?
Bill: In the vineyard when a double rainbow appeared as we finished planting Viognier. In the tasting room when a guest is at the counter with radiant eyes and a compelling smile.
Allie: Imagine, for a moment, that you were not a person but a wine instead. Can you describe that wine?
Bill: Make me a 10 year old Syrah. The cork is going to be hard to pull. The wine is deep, reserved, flavorful and complex.
It was an honor and a pleasure to feature Bill Frick in this issue. He is a man and a winemaker of incredible passion. It is his passion for wine that fueled my own. It was in Bill’s Garibaldi Vineyard that My Wine Words began. Please join me in raising a glass to Bill and to the callings he encourages other to fulfill. Cheers, Allie P.S. I invite you all to get to know Bill Frick & Frick Winery. He changed my world and may change yours as well. www.frickwinery.com

HARRY PETERSON-NEDRY | FOUNDER & WINEMAKER @ CHAHALEM
With over 60 wineries from Oregon present and pouring, the Willamette Valley Wineries Association provided an awesome opportunity at City Winery Chicago for wine lovers in the Midwest to please their palates with Pinot Noir and other vibrant varietals as well. With more winemakers in attendance than I could count, the event served as a conduit for conversation with the source of the wines I love to sip.

GRAND CAYNON: Rim to Rim Preparation is required when attempting to cross the Grand Canyon in a hike referred to as ‘Rim to Rim’. In a single day, you hike across the canyon - 21 miles from one side to the other. Tenacity is required. To prep, Peter & I packed our Vasque boots and a bottle of Celani Family Vineyards 2009 Tenacious.
No. We didn’t have wine in our CamelBaks. Just water - straight up.
Halfway there. Only 10 more miles (uphill in ninety degree heat) until we get to sip wine.
“Are we there yet, Papa Smurf?
From one side to the other, we trekked 21 miles in a single day.
ZION NATIONAL PARK: Hat Trick In a hat trick of hikes (Angel’s Landing, Virgin River & Emerald Pools), we made our way in Merrells on three treks and gave ourselves a namesake reward with the Ridge 2009 Three Valleys - a blend of Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Carignane, Grenache and Mataro.
You see that ridge behind us? Yep. We’re climbed that.
Just 1,488 feet down. No big deal.
Rockin’ out amidst the rock. Speaking of which, a drink out the rocks would have been nice.
Against the current, with heavy gear & in a Star Trek looking wetsuit. I need a drink.
