2020 Production Sale

Wednesday, April 8

Selling 44 head

Angus, Gelbvieh, Salers, Simmental, Red angus, & Charolais bulls + 5 Commercial heifers Colby Community College welcomes you to the 2020 Bull Test and Sale! This sale offers more than just quality cattle from a strong genetic base; it also provides valuable information most sales are not able to offer. With persistent drought conditions, raising durable and efficient animals becomes all the more critical. CCC is in a unique position to provide specific efficiency data from the wide scope of breeds represented. This information will help you improve the bottom line during a time when feed availability is somewhat of a struggle, and help to lower your production costs. In addition to providing producers with added efficiency data the test allows students interested in the beef industry to get valuable hands on experience. Our students are responsible for every aspect of the sale, from initially receiving the consignor bulls until they walk into the sale ring. The college mission is to Challenge students to adapt to a diverse society, to Create opportunities for student growth, and to Connect student learning with professional experiences. By communicating with you as producers, they create professional contacts and get a feel for what they will learn in their careers once they graduate. With society drifting further and further away from agriculture, it is even more crucial for technical programs such as beef production to teach the next generation the importance of sustainable agriculture for the future. We look forward to you seeing what we have to offer and to gain new customers and friendships along the way!

Thank you for your support, Jori Steele, Beef program director

Another CCC bull, this clean fronted bull has a low birth weight and high calving ease, making him a great option to use on heifers.

9003 is a three quarter brother to 9001. Be sure not to overlook the carcass merit in this bull and he ranks extremely high in Marbling, Ribeye Area, and $Beef! As well as calving ease and carcass merit with a phenomenal disposition.Â

917- A long bodied son of the ABS featured bull Hickok. He comes from a cow that has proven herself in our herd through many retained daughters.

Balance best describes 9002, a son of the now deceased Spring Cove Reno. Out of our powerhouse donor Lady Identity 02-3114. Eco Reno is a stout hipped, massive topped, soggy made herd sire prospect. A nicely balanced EPD profile and a complementing phenotype make this bull a lot not to overlook.

GrowSafe RFI Quick Facts FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What are the benefits of selecting for low Does selection for low RFI animals, that residual feed intake (RFI) animals*: eat less, result in reduced performance • Reduction of overall feed intake by up to 12% and average daily gain (ADG)? • • •

while maintaining the same level of production Reduction in the maintenance requirements of the herd by 9-10% Improvements in the feed conversion rates of calves of from 9-15% Reduction of manure NPK production by 17% and greenhouse gas emissions such as methane, by 30%

What does this mean for a cow herd?

By selecting for RFI, or introducing several low RFI bulls into your herd, feed-related savings will continue to increase. Several years of genetic selection will improve the baseline feed efficiency of the ranch and savings will continue to transfer to the cow herd as replacement heifers are retained.

What is Residual Feed Intake (RFI)?

Residual feed intake (RFI) is a measure of feed efficiency that is calculated as the difference between an animal’s actual feed intake and it’s expected feed intake. RFI is independent of body weight and size. Differences in the trait cannot be detected by physically looking at an animal, it requires accurate and simultaneous measurement of an animal’s feed intake and body weight. Animals with low RFI values are more efficient than those with high RFI values.

What is the heritability of RFI?

RFI is a moderately heritable trait (26-58%), and when used as a selection tool, will result in progeny that consume less feed for the same level of production. RFI is independent of growth, body size and other performance traits, meaning that selection for animals with low RFI will lead to reduced feed intake and improved feed efficiency without compromising body size or growth. *Residual Feed Intake (Net Feed Efficiency) in Beef Cattle. (2006, July). Retrieved January 3, 2019, from https://www1. agric.gov.ab.ca/$department/deptdocs.nsf/all/agdex10861/$file/420_11-1.pdf?OpenElement © 2019 GrowSafe Systems Ltd. All rights reserved. 04/19 GS190115-NA

No, selection for RFI does not result in cattle with reduced performance and ADG. Efficient and inefficient cattle can have both high and low ADGs. To prevent a decline in performance, it is important to select for low RFI animals with sufficient ADG. GrowSafe does not recommend single trait selection.

How is RFI calculated?

RFI is calculated as the difference between an animal’s actual feed intake and their expected feed intake. An animal’s expected feed intake depends on its body size and growth rate. The calculation for expected feed intake is comprised of data from the entire contemporary group using the animals’ dry matter intake, mid-test metabolic body weight and average daily gain data. The GrowSafe data analysts use the data captured automatically and continuously by the Feed Intake technology to determine each individual animal’s actual feed intake, which is compared to their expected feed intake. Concurrently, the highly accurate partial body weights collected from the GrowSafe Beef® technology are used to determine each individual animal’s average daily gain and body weight. Example: Animal A

Expected Intake

Actual Intake

8.5

10

Animal B 10 9.5 • Animal A: RFI = 10 – 8.5 = 1.5 • Animal B: RFI = 9.5 – 10 = -0.5 Animal B is more efficient because it has a lower RFI value and because it eats less than expected for its size and level of production.
