Welcome Fellow Cattlemen,
As the representatives of Dvorak Herefords and the entire Dvorak family, we want to welcome you to the 2023 edition of the Dvorak Herefords annual bull sale. First, we would like to say how humbled we are to have you take time to evaluate our offering. It is because of the long-standing relationships we have cultured with you, our repeat customers, that we have been able to continue to grow this generational enterprise. We greatly value our relationship with each of you. If you are new to Dvorak Herefords, we want to say welcome, and hope that we can meet your expectations. I think our longtime customers would attest that we are never more than a phone call away for any questions, comments, or concerns, and a thank you for taking the time to evaluate us. We feel increasing optimism having seen up swings in the feeder cattle market. The expectation is for that to continue as the world demands a wholesome beef product, and we, the U.S. producers, are posed to produce the safest, highest quality beef protein in the world. The historic levels of premiums being paid for Choice and Prime carcasses do not look to diminish, making this the right time to invest in genetics that will set the stage for your calf crops to capture those premiums for years to come. It is hard not to be optimistic when you evaluate this set of bulls. We believe they fully exemplify the mission and fulfill goals of Dvorak Herefords. The bulls in the sale represent generations of strict selection, emphasizing balanced trait selection for moderate birth weights, rapid growth, fertility, structurally sound udders, and functionality with end product merit. We fully understand that the true value our bulls have is what economic gain they represent in your calf crop. We develop these bulls slowly to maximize their longevity. The dams here are treated just like your cows at home to ensure that these bulls will remain rugged and durable. These bulls are an extremely uniform group that offer a lot to the beef production landscape. We have taken every opportunity to gather every piece of information to provide you with the absolute best data to make your decisions. Every bull selling has had individual performance data, carcass ultrasound, and 50K data collected. With the lab backlog we did not have that information available at catalog time, but expect to have it before sale time. You will notice early in the catalog some yearling bulls, as we feel we can not wait a year to share these genetics with you. These bulls are elite in their phenotypes and genotypes. They are the cutting edge of not only our herd, but of the breed. We believe these yearling bulls can really move the needle. We feel that the females that produced these bulls are some of the best cows out there and that their track records certainly indicate we aren’t wrong. We feel it is our responsibility to mate these high quality females with the very pinnacle of sires available to produce you the absolute best future bulls for your calf crops.
We encourage you to make a visit to look through the bulls anytime. As always, we fully guarantee satisfaction with any sight unseen purchases, or any purchase for that matter. In addition, we feel that we provide the best guarantee in the business along with offering to pay half of a six-month mortality policy.
The Bred Heifers come right out of the heart of the replacement pen. They represent the razor edge of genetics we have to offer, including breed trait leaders, a show heifer, and flush mates to the bulls. The polled females are bred to what we feel like may be the three hottest bulls in the breed, RST Final Print, SR Expedition, and SHF Jesse James. Each of these bulls have been used by some of the industry’s most astute breeders. The horned heifers were bred to HH Advance 7023, you will notice that several of the feature bulls are out of 7023 daughters, that is why we dug back in the semen tank to use him. We feel these are the types of heifers that will be able to make a direct impact on any operation. As they have been selected with the same selection pressures as their bull counterparts.
We look forward to seeing you at the Ranch, Friday, February 3th. Please feel free to contact us anytime to make arrangements for a visit or if you have any questions.
Boyd & Jeff Dvorak Ben Roudabush
why buy a bull?
• Consistent. Rugged. Structurally Correct.
• Our mission is to take all the assumption out of your bull selection. All bulls have been parent verified and genetically enhanced. Our data is intensively collected at critical growth points throughout the bull life cycle to capture vital growth and carcass data.
• We go a beyond just a guarantee, we pay half of the 6-month mortality insurance policy.
CARCASS
• 60 is the average Weaning Weigh EPD (WW) of these bulls. Generating a 6-pound advantage over the average Hereford bull when you sell your calves in the fall. 42 bulls in this offering surpass the breed mean for WW.
• 22 bulls with triple digit Yearling Weight EPDs (YW). 35 bulls that exceed the breed average for YW.
• Dvorak bulls not only gain but are highly efficient with excellent feed conversion, expressed by 23 bulls ahead for average for Dry Matter Intake (DMI).
• Many heifer and cow bull options that have an emphasis on early and explosive growth. Displayed by the Milk and Growth values (MG) with 40 bulls surpassing the mean breed value.
• When it comes to pounds of product, Carcass Weight (CW), 12 more pounds of red meat is the advantage is what the average bull in this group gives you. With 39 bulls better than breed average.
• With our added emphasis on Ribeye Area (REA), we have 40 bulls over breed average, with multiple bulls in elite company.
• With additional pressure and increased premium for higher quality grade carcasses Marbling (IMF) becomes supremely important. 10 bulls are more than double breed average, with the top bull being 4 times that average.
• 35 bulls have earned the prestigious $CHB sticker, with the median bull having a $CHB premium of $6/cwt over the average Hereford bull.
• The average Sustained Cow Fertility (SCF) EPD that is 105% of the breed average, combined with 34 bulls ahead of breed average for Mature Cow Weight (MCW). Confirm that these bulls are raised by and will produce moderate framed, easy fleshing females that will remain fertile.
•As we strive to increase milk production teat (TEAT) and udder (UDDR) scores become superiorly important. Every bull in the sale meets or exceed the breed average. This is critical as 34 of these bulls are better than average for Maternal Milk (MM).
• Maternal Traits are characterized most simply by the Maternal Advantage logo. It is not surprise that we have 32 bulls that have earned that sticker. With a $16 dollar advantage to the average bull.

The American Hereford Association (AHA) has embraced the use of genomics into their genetic evaluation by launching a first of its kind single step analysis that utilizes the marker effects of specific traits. Likewise, AHA is directly estimating accuracy values rather than approximating. The direct estimation of accuracy results in a more conservative value but a more accurate value than previous methodologies. The AHA is producing the most reliable genetic evaluation that is supported by Whole Herd TPR™ and genomics, which will give prospective buyers added confidence in purchasing young and unproven animals.
Buying animals that have a genomic profile incorporated into their Expected Progeny Difference (EPD) offers many advantages that allow for quicker breed and herd improvement. Below is a table showing the average increase in accuracy when buying a young animal with a Genomic Enhanced EPD (GE-EPD) versus an animal without a GE-EPD. Similarly, an effective progeny number increase is listed by trait that shows how many progeny equate to a genomic enhancement of a young animal (e.g. yearling). That’s right, buying a young animal that has been genotyped is like having 2-17 progeny, depending on the trait. The proof gained on young, non-parent animals, through a genomic enhancement is valuable and greatly mitigates the risk and allows for more directed selection.
BUYERS GUIDE
Actual Birth Weight (ACT. BW)
The weight of a calf taken within 24 hours after birth. Heavy births weights tend to be correleated with calving problems along with other factors.
Adjusted Weaning Weight (ADJ. WW)
An unshrunk, off-the-cow calf weight adjusted to 205 days of age and to a mature dam age equivalence.
Weaning Weight Ratio (WW RATIO)
An indication of teh animal’s performance at weaning compared to their contemporary group.
Adjusted Yearling Weight (ADJ. YW)
An unshrunk weight adjusted to either 365, 452, or 550 days of age.
Yearling Weight Ratio (YW RATIO)
An indication of the animal’s perfomrance at one year of age compared to their contemporary group.
Dam Production
This is the dam’s average production over her lifetime, showing her average nursing ratios and yearling ratios for the number fo progeny she ahs produced thus far. Eye Pigment
Expressed as a percentage of pigment surrounding the eye.
Direct Calving Ease (CED)
CE EPD is based on calving ease scores and birth weights and is measured on a percentage. CE EPD indicates the influence of the sire on calving ease in females calving at 2 years of age.
Birth Weight (BW)
BW EPD is an indicator trait for calving ease and is measured in pounds.
Weaning Weight (WW)
WW EPD is an estimate of pre-weaning growth that is measured in pounds.
Yearling Weight (YW)
YW EPD is an estimate of post-weaning growth that is measured in pounds.
Scrotal Circumference (SC)
Measured in centimeters and adjusted to 365 days of age, SC EPD is the best estimate of fertility.
Maternal Milk (M)
The MM EPD of a sire’s daughters is expressed in pounds of calf weaned. It predicts the difference in average weaning weights of sires’ daughters’ progeny due to milking ability.
Maternal Milk & Growth (M&G)
The M&G EPD reflects what the sire is expected to transmit to his daughters for a combination of growth genetics through weaning and genetics for milking ability.
Mature Cow Weight (MCW)
The MCW EPD was designed to help breeders select sires that will either increase or decrease mature size of cows in the herd.
Rib Fat (FAT)
The FAT EPD reflects differences in adjusted 365-day, 12th-rib fat thickness based on carcass measurements of harvested cattle.
Ribeye Area (REA)
REA EPDs reflect differences in an adjusted 365-day ribeye area measurement based on carcass measurements of harvested cattle.
Marbling (MARB)
MARB EPDs reflect differences in an adjusted 365-day marbling score (intramuscular fat, [IMF]) based on carcass measurements of harvested cattle.
Baldy Maternal Index
(BMI$)
The BMI$ is a maternally focused index that is based on a production system that uses Hereford x Angus cross cows. Progeny of these cows are directed towards Certified Hereford Beef. This index has significant weight on Sustained Cow Fertility, which predicts fertility and longevity of females.
Certified Hereford Beef Index (CHB$)
CHB$ is a terminal sire index that is built on a production system where Hereford bulls are mated to mature commercial Angus cows where all progeny will be targeted for Certified Hereford Beef after the finishing phase. This index has significant weight on Carcass Weight and Marbling to ensure profit on the rail.

BENEFITS
•
POLLED/HORNED INHERITANCE
One of the most often conversations we have with bull customers is the polled/horned inheritance. We hope that this table will help explain it better. It is safe to assume that long term straight bred angus cows are homozygous polled. With that assumption, it leads to more opportunities to use heterozygous polled and even horned bulls.
USING A HORNED BULL
Mated to horned cows: 100% of calves are horned
Mated to heterozygous polled cows: 50% of calves are horned, 50% of calves are polled
Mated to Homozygous polled cows: 100% of calves are polled
USING A HETEROZYGOUS POLLED BULL
Mated to horned cows: 50% of calves are horned, 50% of calves are polled
Mated to heterozygous polled cows: 25% of calves are horned, 75% of calves are polled
Mated to homozygous polled cows: 100% of calves are polled
USING A HOMOZYGOUS POLLED BULL
100% of calves are polled, regardless of cow horn genotype.
