Director’s Welcome The show must go on! This theatrical credo can be dated back to the 19th century, although Shakespeare, in Henry IV, Part 1 (1597), created the line ‘Play out the play’! We are thrilled that our show, Beauty and the Beast, has been able to go on! This has only been possible due to the perseverance, resolve and resilience of cast and crew, as well as the All Saints staff, parents and community. I am deeply grateful for the patience and generous support of so many in our All Saints village. We have been chugging on for almost 12 months, and the rehearsal period has been fragmented and challenging, but there was always the determination to share the fruits of our labour with our nearest and dearest! This “tale as old as time” is loved by young and old and is a magical tale of transformation. It shares the important message of kindness and inner beauty. As always, there are a multitude of people involved in our Junior School productions, and I extend my deepest thanks to each and every one of them. I particularly acknowledge the gifted and devoted, Mr Andrew Lange (Musical Director), Mrs Jane Venter for her creativity and passion as Choreographer, and Mrs Rosie Tucker for her intuitive support and unflappable demeanour. Huge thanks also to Kim Shepherd and Cyndi Missen for being generous and committed members of our team for the past 12 months. To Julianne Mutton, our costume designer, Tanya de Jager, our stage manager, Gavin Jones and Matt Dean in the theatre, Natasha Lindsay and Hayley Herselman on props, Marijke Collins, front of house: we couldn’t do it without you! On behalf of our dynamic cast of 120 and our extraordinary crew, please enjoy the show!

Synopsis
Within the walls of the village castle lives a brooding pacing Beast, his circumstances a result of an Enchantress spell cast many years beforehand. To break it, he needs to learn to love another and have her love in return before a last petal falls from an enchanted rose. Directors note: Keep an eye on the rose animation to the side of the stage. It is the intelligent and beautiful Belle, having just refused the hand of the village brute Gaston, who ends up coming across the castle searching for her missing father Maurice. He got lost sometime ago on the way to an invention fair. Imprisoned for many years within the castle walls by the Beast, Belle offers herself in exchange for his freedom but finds herself in lockdown in a castle bedroom in return. Meanwhile, back in town, the feral Gaston and sidekick Lafou hear of Belle’s imprisonment from her father and hatch a plan to win her back. Not everything is going too well over at the castle, with a moody unpredictable Beast on the loose. The servant’s desperate attempts to teach him the ways of a gentlemen are to no avail, and when he discovers Belle in the forbidden wing of the castle she flees in fright. Belle finds herself cornered by an angry wolf pack in the forest. (Not the best situation for a girl to be in). Things are looking pretty dire, but right on cue, along comes the Beast to rescue her. Returning to the castle together with a little bit of chemistry brewing, Belle dresses the Beast’s wounds and they plan a date night. The friendship develops between the two, and the Beast trusts Belle enough to release her to rescue her father (again). Upon their return to the village they discover that Gaston has arranged a one way trip to the mental asylum for Maurice. But Belle proves her father is not of unsound mind and shows the villagers the Beast in the magic mirror. In a jealous rage Gaston gathers his mob to stage an attack on the castle. He stabs the Beast and then runs away in shame. Belle arrives to declare she loves the Beast and guess what? In true fairytale style, the Beast transforms into the Prince, the servants become human again … and they all live happily ever after!

Thank you “Come to the edge,” he said. “We can’t, we are afraid,” they said. “Come to the edge,” he said. “We can’t, we will fall,” they said. “Come to the edge,” he said. They came, he pushed them, and they flew. Guillaume Apollinaire
The memories, magic and remarkable resolve that have been so beautifully woven into every step of our 2020 Junior School musical journey have finally been breathed into life this week. It has been a year, a musical adventure, like no other and it is hard to find the words that capture the tests of endurance, the courage, conviction and tenacity that have been called upon. Watching on I have been inspired by every member of our cast and crew as they have dug deep and embraced a myriad of challenges with our trademark All Saints ‘can do’ attitude. Apollinaire’s inspirational words capture so perfectly the simultaneous fragility and fortitude of our 2020 journey. There have been moments, many moments, where putting Beauty aside, taking an easier option would have been welcomed. Instead we have taken the road less travelled, clung to our dream of performing in the Nairn theatre and faithfully continued walking forward. I could not be prouder. Beauty and the Beast has become our lighthouse moment of 2020. Through difficult and sometimes doubtful moments we have steadfastly clung to the dream of bringing it to the stage with loved ones present, bearing witness to a glittering triumph. And what a spectacular triumph it has been. Denis Waitley wrote, “There are two gifts we should give our children; one is roots and the other is wings.” In the dynamic, compelling connections made through their diligence, determination and united commitment we have striven to give our children both. It has been a marathon, every twist and turn an opportunity for growth and every dance, word and song filled with the promise of blossoming potential. I am so very grateful to all who have helped bring our Beautyful dream to life. Our Performing Arts team never cease to amaze, their ‘2020’ vision for our children unwavering and their boundless enthusiasm worth bottling. Staff from across the school, student volunteers, theatre techies, parents (special thanks to Dreamweavers and Cakalicious) and tradies – so many amazing people gave so much. Thank you.
