FROM THE

DIRECTOR BigTime came into being in Term 4 of 2021, when a dedicated group of students from Years 6 to 8 collaborated in a series of workshops to brainstorm ideas for a brand-new juke-box musical. Their brief: To work out what would happen if a computer game revolved entirely around popular music and musical theatre.

After familiarising themselves with the central themes, tropes, clichés and motifs of all sorts of retro computer games - and deciding which musical theatre shows were most appropriate to our needs - the group quickly focussed on creating a logical story arc that incorporated as many of the hundreds of brainstormed ideas as possible.

We hope that BigTime will be enjoyed on two levels; firstly, as a show packed full of catchy tunes, energetic choreography and visual ‘eye candy’ that will leave you with a smile on your face and a few ‘ear worms’ to take home; secondly, as a thought-provoking foray into existentialism, whereby you empathise with the main characters as they ponder the age-old question, “what’s it all about?” Please enjoy the infectious energy and undeniable talents of our huge cast of Middle School students! Mr Todd Harm Director

GLOSSARY

The Complex: The huge construction of different levels that makes up the game NPC: ’Non Player Character’ - the orphans in Act II are the children of deceased NPCs Re-enactment Level: A level whereby the players need to recite, as accurately as possible, the dialogue or action of a popular movie to score points Refresh: When a player-character dies, the game restarts The Script: The rules and code that controls The Complex

ACT ONE Six familiar computer game avatars named Tee, Bruce, Shiloh, Max, Lizzie and Jordan manifest to start ‘Level 1’ of a brand new game. The rules of play are familiar, and each level requires our six heroes to overcome different retro gaming challenges... but this time around all of the action takes on a distinctly musical flavour.

After successfully re-enacting a scene from The Sound of Music (ABC), they ‘Just Dance’ for their lives (Evolution of Dance), negotiate an Andrew Lloyd-Weber-themed Mario Kart race (Drive It Like You Stole It), avoid being ‘ghosted’ by four teenage Alpha Females hell-bent on eating them alive (Maneater) and take on six of the most dastardly villains in all of Disneydom in a riffoff - all before finally battling the Wicked Witch of the West and an army of Flying Monkeys and Winkies in an explosive castle maze to finish the first half of our story (I Ran).

Having been blasted to the Back of Beyond by the huge water bomb, H2-WHOA, our six heroes wake up completely disorientated and searching for answers (Man in the Mirror). Soon after, they trigger the first of three random challenge levels: the first takes them right into the middle of a climate change debate at the United Nations (Cabinet Battle #1), the second introduces them to a tribe of NPC orphans (Hard Knock Life, Revolting Children, Seize the Day), and the final one is a ‘winner takes all’ music puzzle (Seasons of Love). Whether this triggers the ‘beginning of the end’ or the ‘end of the beginning’ is a question only the mysterious Gate Guardians can answer (Larger Than Life).
